Wednesday Caps Clips: Game Over Green Returns

Your savory breakfast links:

  • Recaps and other assorted musings on last night’s overtime win from us (and relive the night in GIFs), Vogs, Monumental video (Oates, Ovechkin, Green, Holtby, Backstrom, Brouwer), NHL.com, AP, PHT, WaPo, CSNW, Frankovic, Peerless, DSP, RMNB, and the Buffalo News.
    • Congratulations to Mike Green, who scored his 100th career goal last night in impressive fashion before ending the game in Game Over Green fashion. [Rink, Monumental, RMNB]
    • From Elias: Defenseman Mike Green scored two goals, including the overtime winner, in the Capitals’ 5-4 victory at Buffalo. Green’s goals were the 100th and 101st of his NHL career. Green reached the century-goal mark in his 483rd regular-season game, second-quickest among active defensemen, behind Sergei Gonchar (461 games). The only other active defenseman to do so in fewer than 500 games is Shea Weber (495).
    • Not to be outdone, Alex Ovechkin added two goals of his own (as well as a pretty slick assist on the overtime winner). [Monumental, PHT, RMNB]
    • Not cool, Mike Weber. Not. Cool. [WaPo, RMNB]
  • News and notes from yesterday’s morning skate:
    • In general. [Monumental video (Oates, Ovechkin, Holtby, Rinkside Update/Laich)]
    • Injuries and some line-shuffling have opened up some opportunities for a few of the forwards, like Jay Beagle and Tom Wilson. [WaPo, NBC4]
    • One of the team’s issues during their recent slump has been their special teams, which have been anything but special. [Rink, CSNW]
    • After taking Monday off for “maintenance”, Brooks Laich was questionable for (although ultimately ended up playing in) last night’s game… [WaPo, PHT]
    • …which resulted in yet another AHL call-up, this time bringing center Ryan Stoa into the fold. [WaPo, Patriot-News]
    • Not playing in last night’s game? Ryan Miller, aka the guy who beat the Caps the last time these two teams faced off. And the time before that. [CSNW]
  • Speaking of Miller, the latest gossip making the rounds yesterday had the Caps kicking the tires on the soon-to-be unrestricted superstar goalie. Is it a good fit? [FanPost, RMNB]
  • Philipp Grubauer is just the latest in a growing list of goaltenders cutting their teeth in the Hershey Bears’ net. [AHL]
  • The upcoming Olympic break has all kinds of rules, complications and potential downsides. [Globe and Mail]
  • Alex Ovechkin: One darn good 28-year-old (and some other guys who are the class of their age group). [ESPN ($)]
  • … who happens to be the hardest-working man in hockey right now, torching his opponents by night and repping Russia by day. Good thing his shoulders are so broad. [Buffalo News]
  • A snapshot of the week that was in the Metropolitan Division. [In Lou We Trust]
  • Welcome to the fold, new Capitals Intern! [Capitals Overtime]
  • Finally, happy 28th birthday to Chris Smith Bourque, happy 37th to Jason Doig, happy 50th to Ed Kastelic, happy 33rd to Roman Tvrdon – and here’s to the late Wayne Stephenson, who would have been 69 today.
