Capitals-Hurricanes: Postgame Quotes

Via the team:

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on mixing up his lines…

“Good, I thought we had good chemistry [on] all the lines. We had a good flow going. They’ve [Carolina Hurricanes] got a couple of good lines themselves. I thought we did a better job of it tonight.”

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on how he thought the team reacted to Carolina’s style of play…

“We had 40 shots. We did a lot of good things; we outshot them 10-0 at the start of the game. Then we get a too-many-men penalty and then they get a 5-on-3 and score. We only had one power-play in the game which I was surprised at but we did a lot of good things in the game.”

Washington Capitals defenseman Steve Oleksy on Washington’s three game slide…

“It’s one of those things. I think everyone in this dressing room, everyone that is a part of this team and this organization all know that we have to play better hockey. We are not playing our best hockey, but we are finding a way to get some points in the mix. Obviously, we have had some games that we probably should have had two points, but you are still getting some valuable points. At the end of the day, we know that we have a lot more to give, and we are going to figure it out and we are going to turn it around here.”

Washington Capitals defenseman Steve Oleksy on better defense after scoring a goal…

“We need to work on a couple of things and see what we need to do to fix this. So, towards the end of the season we know what we have to do. We know how to respond when we do score. We can’t let that continue to happen. That’s a problem that we have to fix.”

Washington Capitals forward Brooks Laich on how he felt tonight…

“I actually felt really good, really good. Especially in the third, really good.”

Washington Capitals forward Brooke Laich on giving up quick goals after scoring…

“I don’t know how you explain it. You go on the ice after a goal, your responsibility is to keep that momentum for us – that’s every line, that’s the defensemen – we’re aware of it, [and] it’s talked about on the bench. For whatever reason we are not executing it. It’s something that is causing us to lose hockey games; costing us wins.”

Carolina Hurricanes head coach Kirk Muller on how it wasn’t pretty, but his team got the win…

“It wasn’t the prettiest game for us tonight, but we’ve had some games lately that we said we thought we deserved to win and we didn’t, and tonight we slugged it out and grinded, and you know it wasn’t pretty but we found a way to win a hockey game, an important game on the road.”

Carolina Hurricanes head coach Kirk Muller on forward Jeff Skinner

“Goal scorers can go on streaks and he’s certainly on a nice streak. You give him the opportunity and he’s certainly going to capitalize. [Carolina defenseman Ryan Murphy] made that great play at the end [on the game-winner]. He’s an opportunist. He’s finding the holes now, and it’s great because not only is he scoring but he’s scoring big goals for us.”

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Andrej Sekera on coming into this game with some confidence…

“We wanted to build on that win, and we got a huge win today that was divisional points. They’re a good team, and I think that everybody played well. [Carolina goaltender Anton Khudobin] played extremely well, and a bunch of guys stepped up and we got the W.”

Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Anton Khudobin on the barrage of goals early in the second period…

“Sometimes it happens, it was, what, five goals in three and a half minutes? I don’t want to say bad words, but sometimes it happens. It’s nothing that anybody can do, you just have to regroup, refocus and keep playing because the game [can be] 60 plus minutes, and if you’re just going to give up after three goals against then it’s not going to work at all.”

Carolina Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner on this being a big win because of its divisional nature…

“It’s a big win. Obviously, they’re ahead of us in the standings and we’re trying to catch them, so we’re always trying to pick up points against them. It’s a big win for us, especially coming off that sort of emotional win last game.”

Carolina Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner on his game-winning goal…

“Ah, it’s a great pass. It bounces up to [Carolina defenseman Ryan Murphy], we’ve got a three-on-one and he sort of threads it through the guy’s legs, and I just had to sort of put my stick there, and it bounced off my stick and in. It’s a heck of a pass. It’s a great play by him.”
