Thursday Caps Clips

Not for sale. - Mark L. Baer-US PRESSWIRE

Daily Washington Capitals news and notes: The silly season is upon us, the Bears make some moves, and catch Ovi owning in the Russian Super League.

Your savory breakfast links:

  • The clock is ticking down to Draft Day and free agency. Let the posturing and positioning begin!
    • First up - If you're thinking of offersheeting Karl Alzner or Marcus Johansson, you can forget about it. Not gonna happen. No way, no how. Nyet. You offer, we match, no doubt about it. [WaPo, CSNW]
    • If contract talks with Mike Ribeiro continue to falter, could he be a piece for a trade? [CSNW]
    • Compliance buyout options for the Caps - all the cool kids are doing it! [NBC4]
    • Could one of these prospective prospects hear their name called at #23? [RMNB]
    • From the NHL vaults, here are the best and worst picks in Caps' history by draft position, naturally bookended by two Russians named Alex. [NHL.com]
    • Augurers form up to the left, alchemists to the right. The NHL Entry Draft is more art than science. [Ted's Take]
    • The Hunger Games (Salary Cap Armageddon edition). May the odds be ever in your favo(u)r. [Backhand Shelf]
  • How video coach Blaine Forsythe saved the Caps' power play and earned himself a promotion. [Dump 'n' Chase]
  • Two (but really three) more Games That Mattered in 2013. [Peerless, and again]
  • In which Alex Ovechkin is once again thwarted by obviously biased authorities. [RMNB]
  • Number two on the prospect countdown: Tom Wilson. [CSNW]
  • The Hershey Bears are making some moves:
    • GM Doug Yingst is wasting no time in reshaping his new roster (though these re-signings look a lot like his old roster.) Welcome back, Joel Rechlicz and Dane Byers. Gritty is making a comeback in Chocolatetown, along with its cousin, Hard To Play Against. [Patriot-News, SHoE, ABC27, PHT (with video]
    • In the meantime, we bid a fond farewell to Dany Sabourin, who will need to acquire some umlauts and a spare vowel or two at duty-free on his way to Finland. [@TimLeone]
    • Track your free-agent Bears with this handy link. [Patriot-News]
  • Where were you on March 28, 2005? If you said Luzhniki Arena in Moscow, count yourself lucky because you just witnessed a whale of a hockey beatdown. Background: 2005 was the Year of No Hockey, and newly-drafted Alex Ovechkin was sharpening his skills with Dynamo in the Super League. Avangard Omsk came to visit, and was thoroughly thrashed eleven-goals-to-none by a Dynamo squad jam-packed with locked out "enhaelovskihs." Ovechkin, Datsyuk, Afinogenov, Markov, Frolov squared off against Jagr and a very traumatized Omsk goaltender. The man behind the Avangard bench that night was Valery Belousov, who is now coaching up Evgeny Kuznetsov in Chelyabinsk (including a heartbreaking loss to Dynamo!). And here we are able to share the entire game. If you rinse the link through GoogleTrans, the video poster made a lot of interesting notes. Awesome OviCelly at approx the 21 minute mark (of the video, not the game clock.) Enjoy! [SuperAjax69 via YouTube]
  • Finally, happy 29th birthday to D.J. King.
