Capitals-Lightning: Postgame Quotes

Via the team, quotes from tonight's win over the Lightning:

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on the energy level of the Caps on the second day of a back to back…

"I was really encouraged with the energy we had. Obviously we got home very late. First period was a little sluggish as you would expect but then we had great energy. They came with a lot of speed, but we handled it."

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on how well the Caps have learned his system…

"For the last month, we don’t even talk about it. It’s just the way we play. It’s not my system or anything – it’s just the way we play hockey. Guys know it and when we make mistakes, it’s just a team making mistakes. We don’t talk about it like that, every guy knows it. We’re playing hockey."

Washington Capitals defenseman Jack Hillen on the play of goaltender Michal Neuvirth

"I can’t say enough about Neuvy [Michal Neuvirth]. He did a great job tonight. That’s what you need him to do. He made big saves for us to keep us in the game early there. He was excellent. He was definitely our number one star today, for sure."

Washington Capitals defenseman Jack Hillen on the play of the Capitals in the third…

"Well you know that they are going to come and you just have to try and focus on the details, stick positions, playing the body and keeping it simple. You know that they are going to push, that’s just the nature of the game. When you have a lead in the third period, it’s tough to keep it going. It’s natural to back off, but I thought we did a pretty good job."

Washington Capitals goaltender Michal Neuvirth on the play of the Capitals…

"I thought we played great in the second period and we stuck to our plan in the third. Obviously, it’s a huge two points for us."

Washington Capitals goaltender Michal Neuvirth on starting tonight…

"I felt nervous before the game and in the first few minutes, I felt like it was my first game of the year. I haven’t played in so long, especially in the building, and I missed playing here. We’ve got, I think, the best fans in the league and such a great crowd."

Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper on taking a difficult loss…

"That’s a tough one, first of all, we put ourselves in this situation so that makes it tough to begin with. I think our guys battled hard, I thought we had every chance to win that game. The boys are battling hard….there’s a lot of good to take out of this but ultimately it’s a loss."

Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper on tonight being a bit of a back-breaker to their playoff chances…

"The reality is the fact we’re eight points out of the division and probably more than that out of the eight seed. We’re getting better as a team, there’s so many things that are getting better. The problem is we’re just running out of time and I guess ultimately, you see what these guys have character wise because they have every right to throw in the towel and say ‘ah well, we’re too far out’ or they can rally up the troops and get ready for Ottawa. Until we get that little mark that says we’re out, we keep going."

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Vincent Lecavalier on tonight’s game and how the second period was the difference…

"I thought we played a really good game. We had our opportunities, we came out of our zone very good [but] we had a couple mistakes in the second [period]. I thought overall we played a pretty solid game."

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Vincent Lecavalier on how missed opportunities early cost them…

"[The Capitals] gained a little momentum in the second [period], we gained it back in the third [period]but they scored on their few opportunities that they had. We had a lot of chances in the first period but we couldn’t bury them. We go up a few goals [in the first period], it might be a different game. It was a good hockey game."

Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop on being disappointed with the loss after giving such a good effort…

"It’s very disappointing, we can’t lose by a goal and say it was good enough because it’s a loss. We still have 11 games left so we’re not going to throw the towel in until we’re out of it. We’re not thinking we’re out of it so we’re not going to quit."

Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop on how the bounces didn’t go their way tonight…

"You can’t get mad at yourself, there’s nothing you can do when you take a slap shot and it goes off sticks and [Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin] makes a good tip off the bar and in. It’s going to happen, it’s part of the game. Sometimes they’re going to go your way, sometimes they’re going to go their way, and tonight, they went their way."
