Capitals-Jets: Postgame Quote Sheet

From the team:

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on the win tonight…

“It was a good game, a hard fought game, the building was electric. They played very well I thought, and you know, it kind of had a playoff atmosphere to it. We’ll talk about that tomorrow and move on.”

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on Alex Ovechkin

“He’s played great the last couple months, as we’ve talked about his willingness to change positions for the team and for what I think will make him a better player. He’s had a two months and he’s pulled us along and all 20 guys have gotten better because of it. He’s given us a lot of confidence, but like he’s said, he’s one piece of it – it’s 20 guys.”

Washington Capitals forward Matt Hendricks on playing against a desperate team…

“They had some injuries, they played last night, and they’ve been battling hard for the last month, as have we. It was definitely our number one point tonight – to get down on them, get gritty, get pucks deep, wear their defensemen out. We were able to do what we did. But give them a lot of credit. They battled back tonight. They were a desperate, tough hockey team to play.”

Washington Capitals forward Matt Hendricks on the coach rolling all four lines and his line getting more ice time…

“It was great. Some games we get those chances, some games we don’t. I’m glad we got to play a little bit more tonight. Credit to both [Aaron] Volpatti and [Jay] Beagle. They were outstanding on the forecheck. They were getting pucks out of our zone which the coach likes, so we got to play a little bit more.”

Washington Capitals defenseman John Erskine on making the save on the goal line against Winnipeg’s Blake Wheeler

“He [Blake Wheeler] must have thought it went in already, but keep going until the whistle blows, I guess.”

Washington Capitals defenseman John Erskine on the play of the Capitals…

“It felt great. Everybody contributed tonight. We had a lot of guys step up to the plate and we got the big win.”

Washington Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom on the play of the Capitals…

“We just had to stick with the game plan. They tied the game in the second period, but we came back, we worked harder and we scored two really big goals in the second period.”

Washington Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom on the play of the third and fourth lines…

“All four lines did a good job, especially those two lines. They’re working hard, creating chances, hitting. They were doing everything. It was good for us to see that. Big game for them.”

Winnipeg Jets head coach Claude Noel on why his team had a difficult night other than a short period…

“[The Capitals] played better than us, they scored, they put more pucks to the net, they’re more skilled than us, they have good speed [but] we matched their speed, they can make plays and they do make plays. We stuck in the game, we got a chance to get back in it and we let it get away. The shift after the 2-2 [tie] was disheartening. That’s a shift you’ve got to have…that’s just a play that you can’t make, or a situation that you can’t have.”

Winnipeg Jets head coach Claude Noel on why his team wasn’t able to get the job done tonight…

“We played too cute, there was no way we were going to be able to match their skill level and to play the way that they played. We had to do some things that to me that we didn’t do. We tried to get it back between periods to get it to go but never got it done.”

Winnipeg Jets forward Andrew Ladd on still being able to make the playoffs…

“We obviously made it a lot tougher on ourselves and we’re going to need some help [to get into the playoffs] so yeah, that’s pretty much it. We have to show up and make sure we’re ready for Montreal and give ourselves a chance to at least put ourselves in a situation where if those other teams lose, we can get in.”

Winnipeg Jets forward Andrew Ladd on the Caps scoring less than a minute after the Jets had tied it up…

“Those things happen over the course of the game. I thought we battled hard to even put ourselves back in a position to get to 4-3, we just couldn’t find a way. We had those two chances in the first [period] where pucks are sitting on the goal line and you know, maybe those go in it’s totally different. We battled hard and I thought a few defensive lapses ended up in our net and that’s the game.”

Winnipeg Jets forward Nik Antropov on the feeling losing such an important game…

“No emotions, it’s frustrating to lose a game like that. It was basically our game seven in the playoffs and it’s frustrating to lose that way.”

Winnipeg Jets forward Nik Antropov on what the team didn’t do in the first part of the game…

“I don’t think we drove the net good in the second [period], but especially the first period. That could have been another couple of goals. We missed opportunities to score. Like I said, it’s frustrating, we lost the game. We just have to wait and see what’s going to happen [with the other games in the Eastern playoff chase].”
