So I am sitting here reading different articles, about ovi not having what it takes anymore. We all knew that Alex was not the biggest fan of Dale Hunter’s system. There was also the incident in the Anaheim game last season where he called Gabby a Fat F###. Gone are those days, when Adam Oates came back to Washington we knew that it was going to be a work in progress, just like it was with the Hershey Bears. In a recent interview with Tomas Kundrtratek, he said that when he was in Hershey under Oates’ direction it took a few weeks for the system to click, and when it did it was great. The thing is this year time is not of the essence, as we are already a quarter of the way into the season as of our game against NYR, in which Holtby was phenomenal, we just could not crack the code which is known as Lundqvist.
Now as for the Great 8, this also is a project that is also in the works. When Oates came in he said that he wanted to make Ovechkin more dynamic as he did with Kovy (Kovalchuk). The problem is that Ovechkin has played left wing for 20+ years. The problem also as many fans and critics can see he has become way to predictable on the left hand side. He comes through the neutral zone wheeling, and makes a move to the slot which is snuffed out all the time due to a great forecheck or good spacing. In recent games Ovi has started to get used to coming off the right wing which once again has defenseman and goalies perplexed once again. I think it was brilliant the way that Oatesy convinced Ovechkin to go back to right wing. He put him on a line with Crabb and Hendricks, a grinder line, after a few games with rarely any touches or shots he asked to go back on the right wing. This is a work in progress, and all I can see coming of this decision is success, even if it is not instant or even this year, thanks to the lockout.
