Capitals-Blue Jackets: Postgame Quotes

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on the competitiveness of tonight’s game…

"That’s a playoff game. It just happens to be now, but we need these points, and you have to put yourself into position. Hockey is getting that way every night. We’ve been talking about that for two weeks. Every night it’s a grind."

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on the recent play of defenseman John Carlson…

"For the last little bit he’s been playing great. Him and [Karl Alzner] have been solid. They’ve been a rock. They’ve started every penalty kill, which has been very solid for us. [They’ve played] a lot of minutes and [Carlson scored] a big goal. He’s playing great hockey."

Washington Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner on the resiliency of the Capitals…

"Tonight was one of those games that we know we should have won this game. The fact that we went down like that I think really upset us and lit enough of a fire for us to get back and build the confidence knowing that we were going to win it."

Washington Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner on coming home after two tough losses on the road…

"It’s huge. Those were pretty deflating losses for us. We were riding such a high and then the one in Phoenix really hurt, and the Colorado, I don’t think the score was a good indicator. But those were pretty deflating, so the fact that we won tonight is good for our moral."

Washington Capitals forward on Alex Ovechkin on the resiliency of the Capitals…

"They [Columbus Blue Jackets] play like that. They put four guys in front of the net to protect their goalie; it’s their system. We have to be patient and we were a little bit patient. They scored a shorthand goal, was a tough moment for us, but we bounced and scored a shorthand goal as well. Kind of 50/50 game, they score another and we score a third one. We just feel good about ourselves and we won in OT [overtime]."

Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin on his overtime goal…

"JoJo [Marcus Johansson] did a great job. Fight through it. And after that I have to go to the net and find a rebound. I get a lucky puck, bounce right to my stick, and we go. It’s always nice to score, and [with an] overtime goal you can feel your best."

Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Todd Richards on his team making progress off their win Saturday night…

"I think there were some good things in the game. I think we had some players that, from the first drop of the puck, were involved. Again, our first period was ok. We needed more out of certain guys, and I think as the game went on those guys started to give a little more."

Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Todd Richards on his team making the most out of opportunities…

"We’re making the most out of opportunities. We had opportunities on the power play, and our power play was slow. I don’t think it was dangerous at all. We had one chance where I think Ryan [Ryan Murray] shot it off the post, and I think that they ended up scoring right after that. We had a chance to get a lead with our power play, and again we’re going out and were not playing fast enough or quick enough to really execute and give ourselves opportunities to score."

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Brandon Dubinsky on his team’s work ethic tonight…

"We battled pretty hard. Tough bounce there on their shorthanded goal. In the third period we found a way to get back and actually get the lead. Like I said, we just need to find a way to lock the door and not give them an opportunity to tie it up."

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Brandon Dubinsky on his shorthanded goal…

"Mark [Mark Letestu] just dumped it down. I just tried to get on the forecheck because with that team they are so good when they are set up in their zone. As much as we can try to disrupt them up the ice, the better off we are going to be. I was able to fortunately make a steal there and bring it out."

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Jared Boll on the play leading up to his goal…

"I think our line was going pretty good all night. Just getting pucks deep and pressuring their D. I think Collie [Sean Collins] got it and threw it out to Wiz [James Wisniewski]. Wiz just threw it on net. I wasn’t really even looking, just trying to get traffic in front of the net, and it hit me and went in."

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Jared Boll on the team’s work ethic following their win Saturday night…

"I think we worked pretty hard. Like I said before, those are games that you’ve got to close out. We’ve had the lead with a couple of minutes to play, and we didn’t get the job done. So we’ve got to be better."
