Capitals-Oilers: Postgame Quotes

Via the team…

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on the power play tonight…

“[They were] good goals. Wardo’s [Joel Ward] was huge…teams are trying to figure out ways to cover guys and we made the right reads. That’s what we talk about all the time, is just making the reads, execution. Sometimes it’s not going to work, they’re going to make saves, the puck bobbles, the ice is tough, but at the end of the day it’s still the reads.”

Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates on the play of Steve Oleksy, Brooks Laich and Nate Schmidt…

“I thought they played great. Stevie’s [Oleksy] pass to Brooksie [Laich] was huge for us – great play, great vision and great poise on the blue line.”

Washington Capitals forward Joel Ward on his first goal of the season during the power play…

“I just had to put my stick down and take a crack at it. Nicky [Nicklas Backstrom] gave me a pass that almost felt like one of those drills at the end of practice with a wide open cage.”

Washington Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom on the importance of three forwards getting their first goals of the season…

“I think it’s important for our confidence for the future, and we can take a step in the right direction. It was a great game tonight and we still have a lot of games to play, but hopefully we can get our confidence going and put pucks away a little more.”

Washington Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom on Brooks Laich’s goal and how it turned the team around…

“It was a good pass by [Steve] Oleksy and Brooks [Laich] turned around and shot. It was a big goal for us and exactly what we needed.”

Washington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby on the play of the Capitals…

“It’s been a struggle to get wins to start this year, and we played a very good game today and we deserved to win.”

Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green on the Caps recovering from a poor first period…

“They [Edmonton] came out hard, played a solid first period and shut us down in the neutral zone. We didn’t have much. It was just a matter of regrouping after the first and making sure we do the simple things to get pucks to the net, and we ended up doing that and they were going in.”

Edmonton Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins on following up a good first period with a subpar second…

“[The Capitals] had hardly any chances on our net [in the first period]. We were keeping the shots against down…our group should have all been feeling good after the first. Even going into the second, we were playing a good, vertical game, getting those pucks up, and then we suddenly decided we were going to take one back in our zone. We ended up back in our zone and that turned the momentum for like a three or four minute span and that’s all it took.”

Edmonton Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins on the team needing to play the full 60 minutes…

“I thought for the other minutes we played well enough to be even or better, but the game isn’t 57 minutes long, it’s 60. What we did so good in the Toronto game was play that vertical game. We weren’t taking pucks back into our zone, we were going with it. We were doing that again tonight and everything was working and it took just one moment of an old habit and bang, that’s when you pay the price and we paid a dear one.”

Edmonton Oilers forward Will Acton on getting his first NHL goal…

“Obviously it felt pretty nice, but it was a rough game for us. It was a tough loss. It might be a little bit of happiness for me, personally, but it’s definitely overclouded by the big loss.”

Edmonton Oilers forward Will Acton on how he felt the team played tonight…

“We weren’t our best. It was a tough loss for us. We’re on a tough streak right now. We really came in desperately needing this game, and when you don’t get it, it hurts.”

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Andrew Ference on the team needing to focus on getting points…

“You want to focus on the good but eventually you have to get points out of it as well. Concentrate on the good and fix the breakdowns because there were some big breakdowns.”

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Andrew Ference on the team being in a bad place mentally currently…

“You can’t carry baggage around. It’s a lot of adversity. It’s easy to be a good teammate and do the right things when you’re winning and have a good attitude, but it’s a real test when things aren’t going your way.
