Analysis of Impending Free Agents

With the assumption that the Caps are looking for offensive help during the off season, I figured they will look at the players who are becoming Unrestricted Free Agents this summer as a way to possibly fill any vacancies. I have compiled a list of UFA forwards, which includes the player's name, age, current team, goals, assists, and points over the last two years, and current salary. I did not include any of the Free Agents that are currently on the Capitals (Knuble, Semin, etc). Statistics are up-to-date through the weekend.

Below is a discussion of the more notable names on the free agent list since discussing every name on this list would be prohibitive.

The leading Free Agent is, of course, Zach Parise. He's having a good season this year, having bounced back from his injury plagued season of 2010-2011, even if he has not reached his career highs. While Parise would be a good addition to any team, he would come with an expensive price tag and likely be signed for more than his current pay and likely more than $7,000,000. By paying Parise, the Caps would be faced with their current dilemma of using 25% of their Cap space to pay for wingers (both Ovi and Parise).

Teemu Selanne has had a very productive career. While he has not scored at the prodigious rate he has in the past, he still topped 20 goals, even at age 40+. He still has not decided whether he’ll return for another season or retire. Most likely, if he continues his career, he would remain with the Ducks.

Shane Doan and Ray Whitney have both had productive careers and are both scoring 20 goals per year despite their relatively advanced ages.

Olli Jokinen bounced back this season to score more than he did last year even though he has not approached his career high.

Jiri Hudler has a pretty productive season, topping 20 goals thus far, during his first full season since returning from the KHL. He is relatively young (Age 28) and his current contract is a relative bargain at $2.800,000. Although he would require a raise in pay, he could be a cost effective addition to the team.

While Ryan Smith is still a productive player at Age 35, his current salary is high. He would most likely return to Edmonton for any reasonable offer as he’s from that region and wanted the LA Kings to trade him there.

It is doubtful that the Caps would sign Jaromir Jagr given his past history with the team and his advanced age.

David Jones had a fine season during 2010-2011 when he was finally healthy. While he has not done quite as well this season, he still has been productive. His current salary is at $2.500,000. Although he would require a raise in pay, he could be a cost effective addition to the team.

Chris Kelly has scored 17 goals as a center for the Bruins and is a center. His goal total is generally in the teens. He is also 31 years old. Salary at just over $2,000,000 is a relative bargain. He could probably center either the 2nd or 3rd line for the Caps. He is currently making only $1,250,000 per year and, while he would require a raise, could be a cost effective addition to the team.

While Andrei Kostitsyn’s goal total has decreased from last year, he is still a productive offensive player.

Pierre-Alexander Parenteau, a Caps killer throughout his career, has averaged close to 20 goals over the last two seasons.

Conclusion: When analyzing the list for cost effective additions to the team, the best targets as wing would probably be Jiri Hudler, David Jones, or Pierre Parenteau. The center market this summer is dry, as a general rule, but Chris Kelly could be a possible target.
