I have an extra ticket available for tomorrow night. Husband is a pain in you-know-what to take to a weeknight game, so e-mail me if you’re interested.

Good morning, folks.

Continuing fun with the new phone.

I have managed to successfully get some of my music over, thanks to Beaker’s suggestion. Double Twist worked far better than Songbird. I haven’t totally figured it out yet, or all my music would be moved, but I at least managed to get my playlists on it.

I’ve also managed to track down some of my vital apps that I use all the time, but I have not yet managed to get Words With Friends back. The android market keeps trying to only show me the free version and I don’t want the ads.

I love my interactive wallpaper. :-D It’s touchable glitter.

Haha! Touchable glitter, nice. Happy Mid-week to ya. Did you decide to move away from the iPhone? Which Android did you get?

by bathwithtoaster on Feb 8, 2012 8:16 AM EST up reply actions

Morning Bath! Yeah, I jumped the Apple ship. I wasn’t going to, but I learned that the iPhone 4s are still on the 3g network, which I didn’t understand. Also, they only had the 8 gb model left. Anything larger had to be a 4s, which I REALLY didn’t want. So I ended up getting a Droid Razr 4G LTE. It’s GAWGEOUS.

If you got the 4s, be careful. Siri is a data hog. That’s why I didn’t get a new iPhone, though I had gone to the store fully intending to do so. That, and I learned that the iPhone 4s is STILL a 3G phone. Far slower than the 4Gs. I didn’t understand that prior to going.

The airport that was closest to my college had one gate, accessed by actually walking onto the tarmac and up the steps of the plane. I loved it. But they did bother to list every one of the day’s flights on the departures board: Flight 82…Gate 1. Flight 170…Gate 1.

Silly.

Pandora uses 128Kbps to stream, which alone isn’t much, about 56MB of data transferred per hour. However if you have 25 people streaming you are up to 3.2Mbps and 1.4GB of data transferred. Depending on your corporate pipe that could be a large percent of the traffic.

The lady at the AT&T store was trying to sell me a higher data plan and gave me the strangest look when I said that I don’t really use facebook or twitter. I might have had to give in and get the 2GB plan if I used em.

by Aliceanna on Feb 8, 2012 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

I thought I was making sense. Either I’m a terrible teach, people have their heads in the sand and refuse to acknowledge reality, or I work with dunces. Basically:

Elite accommodation means the political elite class makes the changes for their own self-interested reasons. Great example is post-Franco Spain, where the change to a constitutional monarchy was driven almost entirely by the elite class. Since the American elite class is either apathetic or outright hostile to the issue of DC democracy, this option is a no-go.

Civil society is the rest of us. Pressure from civil society forced changes such as the Civil Rights Act. Except for a small but passionate minority, people inside and outside of DC are rather apathetic, but not outright hostile, and thus we lack the requisite critical mass to push for change. BUT, we can at the very least make a legitimate attempt at educating, organizing, and mobilizing civil society.

all of that gets followed up with “So, we should ask the DC government to hold a hearing on thsi legislation, right?” HEADDESK!

I’m just sick and tired of wasting our time with the DC government, which has ZERO sway with the political elite that runs the country. And then to have the DC government insist that we engage in this massive protest campaigns—well, we simply don’t have the numbers to pull it off. There are two ways to get change (that don’t involve armed insurrection), and right now, neither option is really available and option 1 is completely off the table. And until we get that, we’re just banging our heads against the wall oevr and over and over again.

trying to get people to understand that is challenging.

Yeah, I don’t know how anyone could imagine that the answer to getting DC rights goes through the DC government.

One thing that stands out to me about the issue, and this is just me ruminating, I’m sure you all have been over this and over this, is how few people in the rest of the country even know that DC residents don’t have voting representation in Congress. I have informed countless people about it. It seems to me that some wider education effort nationwide might help (though that doesn’t help with the elite accommodation aspect). I know! Convince them that you need to start wooing big-time celebrities to your cause! ;)

by Aliceanna on Feb 8, 2012 5:25 PM EST up reply actions

the need for a well-run deep-pocket nation-wide education campaign is always a hot topic. Unfortunately, no one had yet been willing to put up that sort of money :)

We’re always talking about how we need a “celebrity champion.” That conversation always causes issues, because one group wants someone like a civil rights veteran, one group is thinking too much about local celebrities (look, Jim Vance seems like a nice guy, but he’s nobody outside of DC), and I’m going “it could be Kim Kardashian for all I care, as long as it’s someone EVERYONE knows!” People want a “serious” celebrity, not Kim Kardashian. I think they’re wrong, but that’s because I’m always right :)
