Third Period Open Thread
Jason Chimera scores his easiest goal since that one that Marian Gaborik assisted on, and believe it or not the Caps have their first 4-goal lead of the season. Lots of hockey to go, though...third period ahead.

I just looked it up.
Last time the Caps had a 4-0 regular season lead was April 6, 2011 against the Panthers. Caps won 5-2. Goals from Knuble, Chimera, Hendricks, Collins, and Ovechkin (EN) in a 5-2 victory.
Goal #2 in Sean Collins career. Varlamov with the win.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

Holy smokes. First 4 goal lead.
Unbelievable.
My affection for Clemmensen is growing by leaps and bounds.

I tend to see this game as generally in the same vein as the others, just with more goals due to some defensive breakdowns and iffy goaltending.

I think Peerless would agree.

Shot attempts: FLA 47 – WSH 29…Faceoffs: 7 in Caps’ O-zone, 13 in D-zone…same problems
Failure is always an option.
Well, score effects play in here, too.
But, yeah, in general, the Caps have benefited from Clemensen doing his finest sieve impression and perhaps the slowest=developing shortie in history.

It’s tough rooting for this team. Even when they are beating a team 4-0 there’s plenty to criticize.
Once you take the fisting element out, it's not romantic anymore.

Just by watching I would say the Caps are not giving FlA many good chances and have more time in FLA zone; that is, more time in the OZ than is usual for the last few months.
I didn’t see the first period so much though.

They had to have had a 4 goal lead before considering they beat Detroit 7-1 but it is sure is nice to see again.
Nope. 3-0 before Detroit scored. See my post above.

What I saw on Twitter was that this was their first 4-0 lead of the season – I think that’s what f_d meant.

This is what I was referring to.
But I had forgotten about Detroit, too.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
We had at least two 4+ goal leads this season. One in our 1st game against Philly and once again Detroit.
We’ve clarified. 1st 4-0 lead this season.

Is it just me or has Ward actually been playing like we might have expected him too? Strong on the boards, great forechecking, creating dirty scoring opportunities. I love it

I know it’s not Caps, but MTL was having a great, and lucky PK against PIT. Price was out of the net and another player lays the body down. Price was near the leftt circle.

Laich with 6:15 TOI, including 0:51 on the PK. Hope it’s Dale just limiting his minutes due to the big lead.
I’m pretty sure it is. He had 3:03 in the 1st, and I bet he’ll have something around 3 in the 3rd. He’s had some nice shifts out there though.
Failure is always an option.
Surfing on Hockey Reference between periods. I never knew that Luongo was drafted by the Islanders with Toronto’s 1st round draft pick.
Islanders traded Wendell Clark, Matthieu Schneider and DJ Smith to the Leafs for Darby Hendrickson, Sean Haggerty, Kenny Jonnsson and the 1st rounder.

If we don’t get a center at the trade deadline, this is the 2nd line I want to see the rest of the year.

I’m sure this was talked about at length earlier but since I just arrived, any official diagnosis for Laich? I see he’s in there.

Havent been watching all game but it looks like most of the shots are perimeter shots with nobody in front. Exactly what JJ wants

He’s also been walked multiple times and taken some penalties that should never have had to happen. Matthias made him look like a pylon thrice during the first period alone.

I don’t really know what that means, but it sounds gross. Please don’t say it anymore. Twice was enough. :)
They’re all going to hate him and poop in his shoes. And then he’s going to put them on and realize too late.

And yeah the loser points bug us too. a majority of those were games we let teams come back from that should have been wins

AO has had a really strong game tonight, even if you ignore the two goals.
Once you take the fisting element out, it's not romantic anymore.
I’m skeptical of its merits on a single player basis; but on a team basis it does a pretty good job of showing the general trend of possession. Though the extremes in either direction (if a player is noticeably higher or lower than the rest of the team) can show if a player is driving play in a particular direction.

Hello everyone, watched the 2nd period at Mama Lucias in Olney, 2 boburbons on the rocks after a long 12 hour shift and some rum shooter when Ovi scored number 2. Love the fact that Brooksie is in the line up. Lets go Caps, hopefully I can stay up for the rest of the game :)

He started out Shaky but he’s been improving as the season goes on.. once he stops holding back (trying too hard not to make a mistake) and plays the game he was drafted for he’ll be a stud.

Yes, #Caps got outshot, but that’s mostly due to score effects. They were up 16-12 in chances, 14-9 at even-str. It is a good win.

So if this is Dale Hunter hockey sign me up. I’ll happily forget the first 30 games if the finish out the season playing this way every night
I can’t see other teams being as bad as FLA was tonight, but I’m with you. Play hard all night. Play to the buzzer.

The Caps have hit the 7 games above 0.500 barrier for the seventh time. Next game will be their 7th chance to break through. Here’s hoping that number 8 can pull them through to eight games above in the next game.
