yeah. BG simply doesn’t have the same donor base for athletics as the big schools. I have a soft spot for them as BG is just down the road from where Mr. B grew up. Plus that program has so much history, I would hate to see it disappear. The loss of any program, D-1, D-3, or the complete destruction of D-2 a few years back, is a huge blow.

I don’t know. There are a lot of D-1 hockey schools that are otherwise big sports schools (Denver, Lake Superior State, North Dakota all spring to mind).

When Pegula funded the arena, there was talk that the Big Ten Conference would start sponsoring hockey for it’s schools (Penn State, OSU, MSU, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin). That conference, with it’s TV network and large alumni funding base, would become the #1 draw for premier hockey players looking to go the NCAA route, effectively downgrading the smaller schools. Money rules in sports.

Caps are right in the low end of injuries. But missing Tom Poti. Still doing pretty well.

The Bruins however have insane injury luck. Only 30 games missed to injury (I’m removing Savard from the equation; if Poti’s out, he’s out). That is ridiculous.

Actually the trainer could examine is knee to test for a torn ACL. It’s a very simple test (Lachman test or anterior drawer test), they have you bend your knee while laying flat and they grab it a certain way and yank it forward to test it. All it takes is 20 seconds for them to diagnose a torn ACL. This test can be seen frequently performed on football fields after a player lays on the ground in agony after a leg injury, they bend the leg and yank the knee forward. I’ve had an orthopedist perform this test just to check the strength of a reconstructed ACL as well.

Some ACL tears can’t be detected with that simple test because of the strength of the surrounding muscles in the leg, but that is rare from my understanding. An MRI would be required in that situation.

This is awesome and it’s (vaguely) hockey-related

My Wingette disguise worked perhaps too well. One of the dignitaries in our group was Bernie Parent, the 66-year-old former NHL goalkeeper who won the Stanley Cup with the Flyers in 1974 and ’75. A white-haired man with a tan face and squashed nose, Bernie walked up to me before our entrance, chuckled, and wordlessly began to rub me like a shiny trinket.

“You see this ring?” he said, waving a Flyer’s ring before my face and applying friction to my torso. “I got it for winning the Stanley Cup.” He rubbed me from my ears to my elbows. “What, not a hockey fan?”

He pulled out his phone and showed me a picture of his boat.

A bit OT tho’ hockey related. But for his February writing project for school (sixth grade) my son wants to write on an African American hockey player. He’s not interested in Ward or Iggy and we steered him away from Big Buf.

We suggested Willie O’Ree. He did the straightforward google search last night for basic facts, but I wondered if folks around here had any suggestions for interesting and harder-to-find information on him. I know that O’Ree has been to Fort Dupont for some charity work, but that’s about it for local information.

I believe he was at CBC specifically to push to increase support, including financially, for hockey programs for underprivileged kids, who are overwhelmingly minorities.

Steer him towards Herb Carnegie

While racism in the NHL has more or less been swept under the rug very successfully, Toronto Maple Leaf’s boss Conn Smythe was once allegedly quoted saying “I will gladly give $10,000 to anyone who can turn Herb Carnegie white.” Although there is no written evidence that Smythe ever actually said that, the quote, mythical or not, shattered Carnegie, who at the time was a junior player still unaware of the destiny he faced.

The hockey world knew that Herbie Carnegie was a good player, but suspiciously he never had a chance to play in the NHL, not even during World War II when NHL teams were desperately looking for replacements lost to the armed forces.

Hall of Fame referee Red Storey suggests there was only one reason Carnegie never got a chance.

“It’s very simple. He’s black. Don’t say we don’t have any rednecks in Canada. But I’m not saying Conn Smythe was bigoted either. I think he said the quote, but I think he meant that with Herbie being black, he wouldn’t be able to put him in the same hotels with the rest of the team and have him eat the same restaurants and there could be problems if he took him to the States to play against the NHL teams there.”

Also some love for Mike Marson too.

I’m pleased that Verizon was noted as having great atmosphere. I think this is due to the fans being wonderful and rocking the red each game; just like you glorious folks here. I can’t say I like the food or prices in the arena itself, but my overall experience is always pleasant.
If only Ted could guarantee a win and make it not so cold in there; then my experience would be perfect.

Since when has the NBA come back to Verizon? Sure the NBA is out of their lockout and they’re playing basketball, but what those guys running around on the court impersonating the Wizards are doing could hardly be described as playing basketball.

Looking ahead

Looks like the next 11 games will be interesting and while the boys should make hay, anything can happen:
FLA, WPG, NYR, SJS, FLA, TBL, CAR, OTT, MON, TOR, NYI. 5 home games, 6 roadies. They have a good shot at acquitting themselves well on the road with that FLA, TBL, CAR, OTT stretch.
I’m calling anything short of 6-4-1 unacceptable – thoughts?

"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro"

by Steve-R on Feb 7, 2012 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

Look at it like this

That is 13 of 22 possible points, or 59 % of available points. That’s the equivalent of a 97 points season pace. Granted, they have to accumulate greater % of points than the contenders above them, but if they get 60% of their remaining points, they will have 94 points, which should get them into the playoffs.

by S h a g g y on Feb 7, 2012 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

I can’t see them winning half those games – not with how bad they’ve been on the road and how poorly they’ve been performing in important games. They should be able to win most of them, but I’m just losing my faith in this team.

Failure is always an option.

by timmyv38 on Feb 7, 2012 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

I still have faith, but the games have been more difficult to watch. Even when we’re winning recently, it just looks plodding.
