Tuesday Caps Clips: Cats @ Caps Game Day
Your savory breakfast links:
- Previews of tonight's rather large game against the Kitties from Vogs, NHL.com, WaPo (and more), SB Nation DC, Peerless, RMNB and CRtC, and be sure to check out our SB Nation partner Litter Box Cats for more coverage from the other side of tonight's match-up.
- Notes and assorted whatnot from yesterday out at Kettler:
- In general. [Caps365 video (Hunter, Halpern, Aucoin, Schultz, Ovechkin), WaPo, WashTimes, 106.7 The Fan]
- Readying for a Laich-less life. [Dump 'n Chase, NHL.com, WashTimes, WaPo]
- Mike Green has gone three days without skating, which could indicate a setback in his recovery... or not. [WashTimes]
- Dmitry Orlov is ok, though, so there's that little bit o' good news. [WashTimes]
- That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Of course, that which does kill you, kills you... [NHL.com, CSNW, Sick Unbelievable]
- ... and that which makes you stronger likely doesn't make you strong enough. [WaPo]
- A little secondary scoring would be nice. Oh, and so would a little primary scoring. [CSNW]
- Buy or sell: by the sell/buy-by deadline, the Caps will bid bye-bye and sell rather than buy? [We Love DC]
- Ruminatin' with a cold one. [Peerless]
- "It seemed like [the Bruins] knew every single thing that the Caps were going to do before the Caps knew what they were going to do." Alan May had his weekly chat with the Sports Reporters. [ESPN 980 (audio)]
- John Carlson and Karl Alzner give you a glimpse of what life is like for a couple of roomies on a roadie. [Caps365 (video)]
- The Verizon Center tops a list of NHL arenas in overall fan experience (but it sure would be nice to see what that experience is like in, say, late-May). [Stadium Journey]
- Ovi and a red dragon? Ovi and a red dragon. [Alex Ovetjkin]
- Time for the captain to captain... [Sick, Unbelievable]
- ... and for the fans to support the boys. [Capital Spirit, RMNB]
- The NHL chapter of Tomas Vokoun's NHL career started some 15 years ago. Pull up a chair and read the tale. [WTOP]
- Czech, please! (Groan.) [CSNW (video)]
- Really sweet tool from our good friend Nate Ewell and company over at College Hockey Inc. that will remind you, for example, that two of tonight's combatants, Mike Knuble and John Madden, were once teammates. [Backhand Shelf]
- Finally, happy 40th birthday to John Slaney and a very happy 44th to the franchise's all-time leader in goals and points (among other things), Peter Bondra (and for a tribute to Bonzai, check out this FanPost from last year).

I worry about the small school programs, like Bowling Green, now that Penn State is in the mix.

yeah. BG simply doesn’t have the same donor base for athletics as the big schools. I have a soft spot for them as BG is just down the road from where Mr. B grew up. Plus that program has so much history, I would hate to see it disappear. The loss of any program, D-1, D-3, or the complete destruction of D-2 a few years back, is a huge blow.

Maryland is a whole special problem, since they require athletics to be self-supporting, unlike almost all other schools.

And the fact that the athletics department dreadfully miscalculated what they would make over the last ten years and expanded to gargantuan size(thank you Ms. Yow), some things just had to go.

I don’t know. There are a lot of D-1 hockey schools that are otherwise big sports schools (Denver, Lake Superior State, North Dakota all spring to mind).
When Pegula funded the arena, there was talk that the Big Ten Conference would start sponsoring hockey for it’s schools (Penn State, OSU, MSU, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin). That conference, with it’s TV network and large alumni funding base, would become the #1 draw for premier hockey players looking to go the NCAA route, effectively downgrading the smaller schools. Money rules in sports.

One year ago today, the Caps were three points out of first place in the Southeast Division. Today, they’re one point out.
Of course, one year ago today, they were in 4th in the Conference, 10 points ahead of the 8th-place team. And were relatively healthy.

Caps are right in the low end of injuries. But missing Tom Poti. Still doing pretty well.
The Bruins however have insane injury luck. Only 30 games missed to injury (I’m removing Savard from the equation; if Poti’s out, he’s out). That is ridiculous.

DGB, FTW (on players who could be on the move before the trade deadline):
Alexander Semin, Washington Capitals – The enigmatic forward is in the final year of his contract and would make an ideal rental for an underachieving team that was struggling desperately to make the playoffs, so look for him to be traded to the Capitals.

Actually the trainer could examine is knee to test for a torn ACL. It’s a very simple test (Lachman test or anterior drawer test), they have you bend your knee while laying flat and they grab it a certain way and yank it forward to test it. All it takes is 20 seconds for them to diagnose a torn ACL. This test can be seen frequently performed on football fields after a player lays on the ground in agony after a leg injury, they bend the leg and yank the knee forward. I’ve had an orthopedist perform this test just to check the strength of a reconstructed ACL as well.
Some ACL tears can’t be detected with that simple test because of the strength of the surrounding muscles in the leg, but that is rare from my understanding. An MRI would be required in that situation.
What can't all those people who have friends who see Green out at bars...
have friends who work in doctor’s offices that treat Caps? That would be much more useful

This is awesome and it’s (vaguely) hockey-related
My Wingette disguise worked perhaps too well. One of the dignitaries in our group was Bernie Parent, the 66-year-old former NHL goalkeeper who won the Stanley Cup with the Flyers in 1974 and ’75. A white-haired man with a tan face and squashed nose, Bernie walked up to me before our entrance, chuckled, and wordlessly began to rub me like a shiny trinket.
“You see this ring?” he said, waving a Flyer’s ring before my face and applying friction to my torso. “I got it for winning the Stanley Cup.” He rubbed me from my ears to my elbows. “What, not a hockey fan?”
He pulled out his phone and showed me a picture of his boat.

A bit OT tho’ hockey related. But for his February writing project for school (sixth grade) my son wants to write on an African American hockey player. He’s not interested in Ward or Iggy and we steered him away from Big Buf.
We suggested Willie O’Ree. He did the straightforward google search last night for basic facts, but I wondered if folks around here had any suggestions for interesting and harder-to-find information on him. I know that O’Ree has been to Fort Dupont for some charity work, but that’s about it for local information.

I don’t have any insight on O’Ree, but you might also consider Grant Fuhr.

don’t want to expose him to “boating while intoxicated”?
I don’t have much. Willie O’Ree was here for the Congressional Black Caucus in October (along with Kevin Weeks). He’s involved in the Hockey is for Everyone program. I believe he was at CBC specifically to push to increase support, including financially, for hockey programs for underprivileged kids, who are overwhelmingly minorities.

Steer him towards Herb Carnegie
While racism in the NHL has more or less been swept under the rug very successfully, Toronto Maple Leaf’s boss Conn Smythe was once allegedly quoted saying “I will gladly give $10,000 to anyone who can turn Herb Carnegie white.” Although there is no written evidence that Smythe ever actually said that, the quote, mythical or not, shattered Carnegie, who at the time was a junior player still unaware of the destiny he faced.
The hockey world knew that Herbie Carnegie was a good player, but suspiciously he never had a chance to play in the NHL, not even during World War II when NHL teams were desperately looking for replacements lost to the armed forces.
Hall of Fame referee Red Storey suggests there was only one reason Carnegie never got a chance.
“It’s very simple. He’s black. Don’t say we don’t have any rednecks in Canada. But I’m not saying Conn Smythe was bigoted either. I think he said the quote, but I think he meant that with Herbie being black, he wouldn’t be able to put him in the same hotels with the rest of the team and have him eat the same restaurants and there could be problems if he took him to the States to play against the NHL teams there.”
Also some love for Mike Marson too.

Well shit. I should have said black. Now I’m confused….! I have until after school to get my clear-eyed directives in order for my son.
I think he can get away with a Canadian. The point of the project is that the subject has to be black and someone of importance and influence. And my son makes all of his school projects hockey related, therefore a preponderance of Canadians.

I’m pleased that Verizon was noted as having great atmosphere. I think this is due to the fans being wonderful and rocking the red each game; just like you glorious folks here. I can’t say I like the food or prices in the arena itself, but my overall experience is always pleasant.
If only Ted could guarantee a win and make it not so cold in there; then my experience would be perfect.

Not so long ago basketball fans said the same thing about the Caps. Basketball may not be your cup of tea, but there are tons of basketball fans in DC who enjoy the game and want the Wiz to do well.

Looking ahead
Looks like the next 11 games will be interesting and while the boys should make hay, anything can happen:
FLA, WPG, NYR, SJS, FLA, TBL, CAR, OTT, MON, TOR, NYI. 5 home games, 6 roadies. They have a good shot at acquitting themselves well on the road with that FLA, TBL, CAR, OTT stretch.
I’m calling anything short of 6-4-1 unacceptable – thoughts?
13 points in 11 games? Have to agree, but our expectations sure have lowered.
"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro"
Look at it like this
That is 13 of 22 possible points, or 59 % of available points. That’s the equivalent of a 97 points season pace. Granted, they have to accumulate greater % of points than the contenders above them, but if they get 60% of their remaining points, they will have 94 points, which should get them into the playoffs.
I can’t see them winning half those games – not with how bad they’ve been on the road and how poorly they’ve been performing in important games. They should be able to win most of them, but I’m just losing my faith in this team.
Failure is always an option.
I still have faith, but the games have been more difficult to watch. Even when we’re winning recently, it just looks plodding.
Except when MP85 scored that hat trick. That was fun.
