Good morning all.

Does anyone watch “The Voice”? I saw it for the first time last night (my husband likes it) and found it intriguing. Actually, I saw about half of it, I went to bed during it.

My wife watches it, we recorded last night since the wife had to be at work early this morning. It’s an interesting show and I do like the initial selection of teams.

Weekend round-up

So, how was everyone’s weekend?

Mine was great in the sense that my mom is FINALLY back from California, and I got to sleep in my own bed for the first time since Dec. 23 rd. Also, I only had one dog to care for, and one that does not eat his own poop. HUGE improvement.

My daughters decided they would fight all weekend so that was fun. they would go from playing nicely to fighting to playing nicely with no apparent triggers for when to flip the switch. Drove me nuts.

Mr. B’s great-grandmother passed away about 4 am Sunday. Caps got their tails kicked. Super Bowl was AWFUL and the commercials were, too (Madonna’s Vogue dancers, on the other hand, were to die for. Such wonderful classical training!). Then Mr. B got sick for the chili cheese dogs.

Saturday was awesome. Sunday was apparently cosmic punishment.

My morning sucks.

First, my cold has decided that it’s done with me and is expelling itself in the form of goop. Buy stock in Kleenex.

Second, my car battery died on Saturday night (in the rain of course). We jumped it to get it home. I had to jump it this morning to get it to the dealer.

Third, I jumped the car from my son’s car. However, when I closed the hood, I put the little support stick down wrong. Now his hood won’t close and won’t open. He’s pissed, and his mom won’t let him drive to work.

Other than that, all is well.

cell phones

So, I’m going to pull the trigger and jump to Verizon next Saturday. Mom and I are going in together because we’re dumping AT&T, she’s the one who set up the family plan we have on AT&T now, and Verizon won’t try to get my current phone number for me from AT&T unless she’s there to sign off on it, even though I’ll be handling the Verizon plan by myself.

On the upside, I’m hoping for better connectivity, I can dump my phone through Comcast, and I’ll be upgrading to an iPhone 4.

I love that thing.

“James while John had had had had had had had had had had had a better effect on the teacher” is an English sentence used to demonstrate lexical ambiguity and the necessity of punctuation,1 which serves as a substitute for the intonation,2 stress, and pauses found in human speech.3 In human information processing research, the sentence has been used to show how readers depend on punctuation to give sentences meaning, especially in the context of scanning across lines of text.4

The Lloyd’s Bank Coprolite

The Lloyds Bank coprolite is a large paleofeces, or desiccated human dung specimen, recovered by archaeologists excavating the Viking settlement of Jórvík (now York) in England.

HA!

The specimen was put on display at the city’s Archaeological Resource Centre (now known as DIG), the outreach and education institution run by the York Archaeological Trust, where it delighted generations of awestruck schoolchildren.2 In 2003, it broke into three pieces after being dropped whilst on exhibition to a party of visitors. As of 2003, efforts were underway to reconstruct it. 2
In 2008 it was on display at the JORVIK Viking Centre.

So – I’m on the Board of Directors of a charity here in St. Louis and have been for seven years. There is a new head of the local chapter of the organization. It’s a very prominent, well-known, nationwide charity. This new head has never called me directly to introduce herself to me, find out what I know, and how I might help. A few weeks back, I told one of the staffers there that I thought this was wrong, that I thought the chapter president should be reaching out to all members of the Board directly. Now, I’m getting phone calls from this woman’s assistant to set up time.

Am I being stubborn in not calling this woman back, because I believe she should be calling me directly?

Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

Yeah, I think so. Go ahead and set it up and meet her in person. She may be one of those people who isn’t comfortable talking directly to someone she hasn’t met in person yet. Or maybe she is really super busy and isn’t stopping to think how her use of her assistant in this instance could be perceived.

If it’s any consolation I don’t totally agree with WOI. I don’t think this woman is uncomfortable calling you directly. She has an assistant, so she uses her to do assistant things….make appointments, coffee, and assist because she’s the Pres. of the chapter….just like you are a Boardmember…a little power thing here. Yep, just call, but try not to ruffle any feathers…including your own darling…:-)

I don’t think it’s uncommon to have the chapter president’s assistant do the leg-work for finding a mutually convenient time to chat.

As someone who ends up having to do the leg work of contacting board members, some are really responsive when I have to schedule a meeting on shorter notice (which we try not to do, but sometimes events force our hand), and some I have to devote hours to stalking to get any sort of answer out of.

shit, hit “post” too soon. Anyways, there’s about a billion other things—like massaging the egos of donors, trying to get the mayor’s people to listen (ha!), doing TV interviews, whatever—my executive director can be and needs to be doing instead of having to play “hunt down unresponsive board members.” Not saying you’re unresponsive, but trying to contact board members can be really time-intensive.

That is really cool. The other thing I like is when spider webs get covered in smoke and turn black.

A few years ago, my little brother lit the garage on fire, and while the smoke just kinda greyed the white walls, it turned the spider webs in the corners DARK black. So it was these jet-black spider webs against light colored walls. It was really cool….except for the whole house-on-fire part.

guhhhhhh

a number of shitty things happened this weekend
first off I made a questionable decision on friday regarding a female.
second everybody and I mean everybody lost.
third my phone decided to stop recieving texts or calls so I need to make another 20 min trip to the store today to see if I can get it fixed. I got a new sim card yesterday but that didn’t fix it.
fourth (not really shitty) on saturday I went to a jersey party, finished a keg in less than 4 hours with only 20 or so people, and found an underage girl in the fetal position inside a dryer.

Anybody want to unload a pair (or three) tickets for any of the remaining home games? I’ve got a friend who wants to go, and her price range is as cheap as possible. She said $50 a ticket is her absolute limit.

I decided to start up the p90x program again yesterday. so for everyone’s amusement (and my own motivation) I will be posting updates here, whether you guys like it or not =P. Nothing like some accountability and the fear of merciless mocking to keep me on track.

I’m doing the lean program this time because I’m not worried about muscle mass this time as I am about improving cardiovascular health and flexibility, plus my wife will work out to the lean workouts when she doesn’t have a planned workout. Starting off at 207 and ~19% body fat. My goal is to get my body fat % in the 13-15 range. Based on when I was in shape that should put me between 195-200.

It’s so easy to slip up and have a setback. All it takes is 1 missed day then you think “wow I don’t hurt and I’m not tired” then that turns to 2 missed days and before you know it bam you’ve missed a week then two weeks. not that I’m speaking from experience or anything.

by Beakers Lab on Feb 6, 2012 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

I’ll be interested in your updates, BL. Lots of discussion here at work about the program but I don’t know anyone who has actually tried it. I attend a “boot camp” style class 3X week. I’m guessing it might be similar.

I did the full p90x 90 day program about 4 years ago and I’ll tell you it definitely works but it sucks big time. It’s 6 times a week for an hour each time. It’s like any other program in that you get out what you put into it.

Holy Cow...
Fifth-Grade Scientist of the Day: Kansas City, MO fifth-grader Clara Lazen, age 10, has been published in Computational and Theoretical Chemistry after discovering a new molecule during a class exercise.

Her teacher took a photo of the model she built and sent it to his friend Robert Zoellner, a Humboldt State University professor, who created a computer model of the molecule and wrote up a paper on it.

The molecule’s unique structure makes it well-suited to store energy, so it could have many useful applications. Further research will determine whether it can actually be synthesized.
