A couple of defensive mistakes wind up in the back of the Caps' net while the twine behind Tim Thomas remains undented. Second period ahead...

Hey guyz. It’s been a while.
Ovi’s getting one today. I sense it.

I love that the Chara vignette shows him boarding Claude Giroux. I hate that gigantic a-hole.

Did anyone else catch that awkward exchange where Pierre McGuire cut off Milbury and they stared at each other for a full five seconds before it cut to commercial break?

You could hear them arguing faintly over the cutaway sequence to commercial break. It kind of took the edge off that period a little bit.

8-90-28 & 21-26-20 looking pretty good. Other two lines so-so. Don’t quite understand why Matty, however, doesn’t get more ice time. The fact that Ward and Matty are getting equal minutes indicates to me that ….well…what in the hell does it indicate??
Matty & Ward’s line had one really good shift that I recall. Ward didn’t see the puck, but he had a wide-open net in front of him.
I think Ward actually moved in slow motion.

You and most Caps fans I know. Which is fine. I hate Philly more than Pittsburgh, but as long as it’s not a 3 point game, I think I’ll be almost equally angry about the winner.

Well both Ward & Ovi missed golden chances. Does that mean Ward’s getting better or Ovi’s pressing? And thanks refs for the failure to call anything while Chara’s slashing Semin; I guess his stick (or body part) had to snap.
Caps got away with a couple crosschecks in the defensive zone. It goes both ways.

Of the three Caps goal scorers from last game, Cody has been shipped down to Hershey, Matty P has been shipped down to the fourth line, and All-Star D-Wides is babysitting coach Hunter’s Least Trusted Defenseman™ on the third D pair.
Huh.

When was the last time the Caps took a shot that had a chance of getting tipped by traffic in front of the net?
It’s something that annoys me, and Mike O’Meara and his show touched up on it (Though talking about the NFL). What happens is they prepare so much copy, and they try to sneak it all in, and it isn’t always applicable. There’s WAY too much. Just come on the game, not the damn copy.
And if that’s intentional offside, lick it. He lost control of the puck.

Was hoping the Caps might come out a little more aggressive to loose pucks and in the corners…oh well.

Trying to make sense of this Swedish feed, but haven’t been too impressed with MP just now.
Um, are we that as bad as the boxscore, or is Thomas just on today?
A little bit of both. And Calle Johansson is doing color on the Swedish feed, so it’s still better than NBC.

Stop guys. It wasn’t a dirty hit. Laich turned his body as he went to the wall. It wasn’t even that hard. The reason Seidenberg’s knee was on Laich’s knee is that they are the same height.
Nothing overtly wrong with that contact. Tough luck.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

No, that was in the back in the numbers. Seidenberg isn’t coming in hard, but Laich’s trying to turn away. Seidenberg can just ride him into the boards, but he doesn’t. It’s checking from behind, don’t mask it.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Laich is turning and Seidenberg doesn’t go full on against him. If he really wanted to he could have planted him but he didn’t. It sucks that he is hurt but that was not a bad hit and if it was then Ovechkin should be suspended about every game because he makes about one or two of those hits each game.
He hit him from behind. I don’t care about the force involved.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
If you weren’t allowed to even touch guys from behind then guys would skate around the wall with their back to the play and would not be allowed to be touched. You can have contact to the back as long as you hold up especially if the player is turning as Brooks did.
Yeah, you can ride them into the boards. He didn’t. I’m usually really quick to defend a hit if I think it’s clean, regardless of team, and you guys should know that. That looked dirty to me. He made contact into the back, and followed through rather than riding.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
I just watched it again. They are both going for the puck. As they near the boards, Laich slows down, and looks behind him. Laich turns. Seidenberg hits Laich on his side. Never on the back. Seidenberg’s skates do not come off the ice. Good hit. Bad contact.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

His arm is between Laich’s numbers, and he follows through there. It’s in the back.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Rewind it dude. It is not a hit from behind. No way. Laich’s right shoulder and elbow go into the boards. I’ve watched it ten times now.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

Contact was made between the numbers on the back of Laich’s uniform. I wasn’t talking about where he hit the board, I’m talking about where Seidenberg hit Laich. I don’t have your fancy schmancy rewind technology, so please post it when it hits youtube. I’ve looked at it in the three-four looks they gave us, and I saw the same thing every time.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Fair enough. When you get a chance to see the replay again, you’ll see that Seidenberg doesn’t hit Laich in the back. He doesn’t contact him square from behind between the numbers.

no guts no glory
Im sorry, I am a rabbid fan of 30 years, but I believe the attitude of “who cares” country club no pride and everyone relying on Ovie ONLY for offence, NO ONE IN FRONT OF the GOALIE is making this a hard to support team. That comment from Alzner after the Florida game saying “its hard to get up for a game in Florida” when 1st place is on the line tells volumes about the mindset of this team. This TEAM sucks! Top to bottom and that hurts to say. We need to blow it up , I mean the whole thing. WTF IM FRUSRRATED
This is what happens when you think you can take a playoff off and you think Aw we can get it next year. Yeah right . They wont ever get that chance again! START OVER
So you can get a nice core of 3-4 players and then yell more when 2-3 of them get hurt/suspended again?
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
you obviously dont know what blowing up a team is
We got the team of 3 years ago blowing up the team. Start with a new core and change the team attitude. It will be contageous and give us a chance at a cup. I dont see this team in ANY final.DO YOU ?

I Know its hard
Where do you go with this team? How long have you watched hockey? How consistantly do we have a winger posted in the slot? Why do we not take shots until the d is allowed to set it up for it ? How often do you find yourself screaming SHOOT THE PUCK way before its done? Why doesnt this team understand when you shoot the puck from the left point you need to seek rebounds to the RIGHT of the net. Why do we shoot the hard around and theres no one right side blue line. These are simple things but we dont consistantly do the things to put us in a position to get a scoring shot with a chance to get twine.

I’m not mad at you guys, in fact, I really do hope I’m wrong. I don’t like seeing dirty plays. Taking a step back, the look I saw that really cemented it was zoomed in, and it looked like Laich was turning to his left from the get go, and Seidenberg made the decision to hit him while his back was facing him. Laich tried to turn to push the puck to the left, and looked like while he was at about 60 degrees to the wall, Seidenberg’s left arm makes contact with the space between the 2 and the nameplate on Laich’s back (admittedly, didn’t get a good look at the right side of him), and then he followed through with the shoulder into his back. Because of the angle Laich had to the boards, I can see why his right side hit the boards first.
And now that I see it again from the low boards view, it looks like it was leg on leg, and his arm was just on his back after the fact and Laich keeled over immediately. Not a dirty hit.

Is having a PP really a good thing?
I noticed this in the last game, and I’ve already noticed it in this one. I’m ok with playing an umbrella with Ovechkin on one of the high walls/rotating points. But if he refuses to skate into the zone and just calls for passes → one-timers back there, he needs to get put down low. A huge issue I have with this power play is that only four of the fixtures on it move, at best, and it’s the Captain who doesn’t unless he has the puck.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Ovi should float into space as needed.
by ShootTheBullets on Feb 5, 2012 2:13 PM EST up reply actions
But he doesn’t. And he’s not a good player with how he’s used on our power play. Floating into space is fine, but he doesn’t float in space, he stands in the corner and doesn’t move unless he can get a one timer off into the pack of defensemen standing in front of the goalie.
