Was it just me, or were the Caps, and namely Sasha as one who sticks out big-time in my mind, trying to be way too cute and fancy in the offensive zone? I like what the line of Semin-Laich-Hendricks did on Hendricks’ goal, though. Get it to the net and good things happen. Who’d have thunk it?
I need 100% of you guys to give 110% 100% of the time.
What went wrong? Montreal (possibly) broke the nose of a Russian on our roster. That shit never works.

Still not impressed with their breakouts or the way they clear the zone. When they are hemmed in, they just clear it out like a PK instead of a controlled play. Thats not going to work over the long haul.
I thought it was a problem, but not as much as it could have been. After all, MTL isn’t that good.
Caps had some good time in MTL zone in the short time I saw it too.
Caps looked to be in slow motion now and again as well, but I only saw the last period.

Why is it, only D-Wides pic seems like he’s happy to be there.

*Ovechkin’s return seemed to spark…well, nothing really. Same old song and dance. A good start followed by a gradual loss of steam and then long stretches in the D zone.
*Ultimately the above culminated in the second period, where the Caps managed 3 shots total.
*They got lucky to get out of that period without conceding a goal.
*Can’t remember the last time I’ve heard Bell Centre so dead. The bore-’em-to-death approach worked in the end, although as noted above, it came courtesy of a large dose of luck,
*Happily, it’s better to be lucky than good, and Wideman’s eephus ball, some timely blocks and the fact that the Habs aren’t very good allowed the Caps to take a lead that had to feel entirely insurmountable to the Habs and their fans.
*Alex Semin showed all sides of his game today. Turnovers, desultory play with the puck, overly-cute passing, inexplicable falls…and a sinful finish on the penalty shot. Budaj had no chance on that shot.
*Nice of the Habs to forgo cashing in on the (many) D-zone turnovers the Caps handed them.
*Carlson, for a change, was not the most egregious offender in this regard, as many of his teammates joined the happy throng. Wideman, Aucoin, Hamrlik, Hendricks and Halpern all coughed it up in bad fashion. A better offensive team will make the Caps pay for that habit.
*Even the normally reliable Alzner had some shaky moments with clears.
*Did anyone miss Joel Rechlisz? Me neither.

As far as substance goes, that post sucks. I had to torque a bunch of stuff around to make it fit in the acrostic.
Anyway, yes, I agree, the whole team, including Alzner, looked pretty damned bad when it came to clearing the zone. And it started early. Right off the opening draw Wideman (I think it was him) fumbled the puck right to a forechecking Hab. I call that the Erskine Special, but the whole team was prey to it today.

I tuned in for the last ten minutes of the second, most of which was spent in the Caps’ zone culminating in the lazy behind the net passing between Alzner and Carlson that ended with a horrible turnover in the high slot. Against another team that turnover would have ended in the Caps’ net. So for the third I returned to cleaning my house. I’m happy they won, but that ten minutes was emblematic of how miserable it is to watch the Caps right now. I preferred to clean.

A truly sad commentary — if you’d rather clean than watch the game. I initially thought I wouldn’t watch the game, figuring I’d go ice skating or go upstairs and read a book but decided to watch anyway. The second period did have me nervous. I still continued to watch anyhow but relaxed a bit after their 2nd goal.
Still, helps that they were playing lousy Montreal who were letting their frustration getting ahead of them.

I’m almost positive the Habs use a trap style, similar to that of the caps, that leaves a winger free in the zone to exclusively dive into passing lanes. montreal builds off of those turnovers with very fast transition and a very fast team in general. definitely coulda seen the caps turning the puck over quite a few times. ..impressed that the team didnt let any in the net tho.
Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!

Caps back in 8th. Until at least tonight. Root for Ottawa in regulation.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
In other stats, for as bad as everyone says the East is, Caps have 58 points. 8th place team in the West is Minnesota – with 57 points (same number of games played).
The bottom three teams in the league are in the West.
Think the SE is bad? Boston is feeding on the NE. So are the Caps.

Alright guys, I have a legitimate question… In regards to this Fenwick/Corsi graph, how does one get a complete read or gauge on this? I read the post that JP made in 2009 and what I got from it is that it kind of relates to the regular +/-… But in terms of this game Carlson had a -11 and Vokoun had a -23, now I would assume thats some shit stats but they won the game. All I’m really asking here is for someone to tell me that I’m reading it right, or at least kind of, and if I’m not can someone give me the complete layman’s terms as to how to read this? Sorry if this is ridiculous but I’m a little mind-fucked at the moment.

You’re reading it right. Make sure to also look at the zone starts and head to head. It’s harder to have a good Corsi when you face good players, start in your own zone, and when your team leads the entire game.

CORSI source
This site here should give you a solid overview of the CORSI-ish side of things: http://www.behindthenet.ca/nhl_statistics.php?ds=30&f1=2011_s&f2=5v5&f5=WSH&f7=20-&c=3+4+7+8+10+13+15+17+18+19+29+30+31+34+45+46+63+67#
> all Corsi represents is the relative shots for team vs shots against while a player is on the ice, so it’s got more information going into it than just the +/, which imho has too much of an element of luck to it
→ with the stats on that page, what I find most useful is the result of: (Corsi Relative) – (Corsi Rel QoT) + (Corsi Rel QoC), which in my mind feels like a measure of “relative individual Corsi contribution”. The stronger your teammates, the less of your relative Corsi is your own; the stronger your competition, the more you had to overcome to get your Corsi value.
→ from this you can get some facts like:
* Schultz and Erskine are INCREDIBLY TERRIBLE defenders, though Erskine has been getting a little better recently
* Alzner has fallen very fast over the last month or so
* age is catching up with K-Nubs: he might be our worst even strength player
* Halpern was amazing, by far the best on the team… until about a month ago and has been dropping fast
* MoJo had been 2nd worst on the team until 2 months ago and has been slowly climbing since
* Ovi is having a WAY worse season than it looks, which is saying something
* when Roman Hamrlik isn’t making awful turnovers in our zone, he’s by far our best defenseman
Everything comes down to shots on goal – it’s always somewhere around a 10% shot percentage overall through the league year after year, so the more a player can change the for-against balance the better: +10 rel-corsi is like being worth a goal-for-per-game (or preventing one goal-against), -10 is like being worth a goal-against-per-game (or taking away one goal-for).
Of course, this all goes out the window with special teams, so make of it what you will…

Chimera
Agree totally.
I’d like to add Chimera to your list of notes. He has played some of the toughest minutes on the team and played to an even Corsi Rel. That’s pretty impressive.
What’s also interesting is that if you use Greenberg’s SC% to evaluate, you get very different results. Weirdly so. I think SC% is more important than any form of Corsi/Fenwick. And by SC%, Semin is the best on the team and Erskine is our best defender. So, Erkine gives up a lot of shots but weak ones. On the SC% list, Knuble and MoJo are still lousy and Brouwer is still very good.
For the life of me, I don’t understand why MoJo stays in the top 6. I don’t think we can win like that. Eakin and Perreault are actually better than MoJo by Corsi and SC% (granted MoJo plays tougher minutes but not enough to explain the chasm of difference). Yet MoJo stays in top 6 and Eakin can’t even stay in DC. Drives me nuts. I would rather scratch MoJo and play Eakin or Perreault.
Finally, we REALLY need Backstrom back.

Looks like the B’s got beat up on more than just the scoreboard today. Seidenberg and Marchand might be questionable for tomorrow.
Oh, and Orpik boarded Marchand quite nicely. Anyone want to lay odds on him not getting a call from Shanny?

They said Marchand looked woozy, I didn’t catch, but I assume that means he didn’t finish the game.

Pretty sure that Seidenberg got stitches and returned to the game. Sure he could be a mess tomorrow, but he did return to the game.
For the afternoon?

Greetings from Montreal!
We had an awesome time at the game today. The fans were very nice. They are quite frustrated, obviously, with the current state of the team. It’s funny/sad that they cheer on Gomez every time he has the puck. Smoked meat is excellent.

What was the name of that Italian restaurant? I missed out on eating at that one when I went to Montreal last spring. This is a note for the next time I ever return there.

Don’t recall, it’s been a few years. And it may have been around that tourist-like area if not by the stadium.
No, I’m pretty sure the stadium, we were walking to the game… I think.
I just remember thinking we shd be having French if anything, why eat italian in montreal?
But very good stuff, upper scale.

There’s a reason for the Gomez cheering, and it’s going to be even louder for tomorrow’s game:
Because we are totally dedicated to helping Scott score his next goal, we will cheer for him each time he gets the puck. We hope that will give him wings.

Is it my imagination or did the Caps sellout streak end in December? We’ve heard no more announcing of sellouts at VC. And there sound to be more tickets available, as of late, even against the Bruins.

You’re right that there are a lot more tickets on the market, though.
Don’t care for Subban’s checking with his back. Suppose one could consider it his calling card. Is it a good check? Probably. It just seems less than sportsmanlike.

What happened was we found a team that’s decidedly worse than us in all phases. There are a few of them out there, thankfully
To me it looks like Ovie got a little “oomph” in his step after Semin’s goal, but nothing really came of it. Story of his season, really. Hopefully it doesn’t take him as long to turn things around as it did for the Brian Campbell hit.

Every (line) Brooks Laich touches, turns to gold.
And I’d argue Wideman’s goal was more good play than luck. Budaj didn’t see it until it was past him. Multiple players in the way, good screening.

Ugly game
I know we won. But we got dominated by a lousy team in the 2nd with the game close. Vokoun was excellent, the Habs are struggling and we dodged the bullet. Play like that against the Ranger, Flyers or Bruins in the playoffs and we lose 3-1 or worse. This team is in trouble. If we don’t get the offense going, we will miss the playoffs or lose badly in 1st round.
