A quick housecleaning note:

To clear up a misconception, the OTOT thread is here for discussion amongst community regulars about non hockey-related topics of the day, on their minds. It is not an “anything goes” thread to post content that may include objectionable content. Many of the guidelines found here can (should?) be observed when posting in OTOT, as do the consequences.

Thanks for reading, tell your friends, go sports.

by Beakers Lab on Feb 3, 2012 8:03 AM EST up reply actions

No. It’s not worth trying to get the insurance company involved. It’s not directly in the line of sight so I’ll probably just just one of those repair kits that basically inject some sealant so that at least it won’t get bigger.

Karl Alzner was about 3 inches from me, so that was cool.

I didn’t wait in line to tell Brooksie that we should leave our respective others for each other. That line was INSANELY long. Lots of little kids at the show in Ovechkin jerseys!

More seriously: we drooled over the classics that were for sale (or already sold. bummer). There’s actually a Fiat course, and you get into the Fiat and ride around in it and they show you how well in corners and stuff. Did really like the new Corvette model body—that’s one mean, sexy looking car. Was a little surprised to see that cars seem bigger this year than the past few years.

I’m still waiting for sysadmins to add a printer so we can test the USB printing at a remote site >_<

by Joran on Feb 3, 2012 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

here’s my territorial behavior coming out. Don’t confuse the Sys Admins with the Helpdesk staff. Helpdesk is more typically an entry level position and usually Sys Admin positions require 3-5years IT exp just to qualify.

Helpdesk technicians – Tier 1 answering phone calls
Desktop technicians -Tier 2 working on users machines
Systems Admin – Tier 3 work on servers, usually several years as a tech first then moved up.
Sr. Systems Admin – Tier 3/4 more experienced, typically 5+ years SA experience

Obviously every place is different but it just irks me to be lumped in with helpdesk when I’ve been doing this 14 years and am responsible for millions of dollars in server hardware and a team of Admins. Yes this is petty to some extent but it really does annoy me when everyone assumes IT is all the same and doesn’t recognize the amount of work I’ve put in to get where I’m at and assumes I’m the same level as a tech with 6 months experience.

nope, because there are reasons those things aren’t always automatically updated. the Java and Flash updates are notorious for breaking legacy applications and it’s easier to do an update after it’s been verified than it is to fix a problem with the user down.

We also automate all the patches so it doesn’t require someone at the computer but we are also a big shop. 900 workstations and 250 servers. I’ve worked in smaller places though and done the sneakernet updates.

Yes, I know, chocolate is toxic to dogs. They both are acting totally fine, however. Of course, now I get to worry the rest of the day. Fortunately, the tub was two thirds empty, but still. That’s maybe a cup or so of those things.

by What Is Narf? on Feb 3, 2012 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

The purer it is (less sugar, less milk) and the smaller the dog, the more danger there is. With medium to large dogs, eating the little bit of chocolate around the fruit is probably not going to cause harm.

It’s a good thing they were chocolate-covered cranberries and not chocolate-covered raisins, though. Raisins even in small quantities can be very poisonous to dogs.

I’ve had hit or miss issues with dogs and chocolate. The biggest “hit” occurred when my dog ate one of those chocolate kiss cookies. He had a seizure about 5 minutes after eating it. But another dog scarfed down a whole pan of brownies and nothing happened. Here’s hoping your guys fall into the “nothing happened” category!

I should receive hazard pay

Just got back from looking for magazines for work. The only one I could find (and because it’s for work, I had to pay money for it—luckily I have the receipt for it so work can pay me back) was Seventeen. I suppose it’s better than the alternative (though not by much) of Cosmo Girl (which I almost wrote here as “Cosmic Hurl”).

At least I picked up a couple of older CDs from The National while I was at it. (Boxer and Alligator, in case anyone was wondering.)

At this point, they’ve tarnished the brand. While I don’t think I’ve ever donated, I’ve certain bought a product or two with a pink ribbon on it (food, not a blender or anything). I’ve never been a fan of how they operate, too much in the way of promotion. I don’t like walk-a-thons, telethons, etc. I’d rather see the sponsorship money go directly to the cause.

BIG ASS series this weekend for Michigan as we host Miami (OH) for two. Our remaining schedule is weak and ready to be demolished — home series vs. Bowling Green to close the regular season, for example — so a pair of wins this weekend would go a long way towards ensuring a CCHA regular season title and a 1 seed in the NCAAs.

I am never going to complain I don't have anything to do at work again.

Two hours ago, I was grumbling to myself about not having anything to do.

The Universe said, “Oh yeah? Here you go.” and a researcher from across the hall, who I know to say hi to, broke down in my office because he found out this morning a good friend of his committed suicide yesterday.

I’ve been talking him through tears, gave him a hug, and distracted him with nonsense until he could pull himself together.
