Boston is looking pretty ordinary lately: 4-4-1 in their last nine, and it looks as if Claude Julien has taken to alternating goalies. If Thomas gets the Penguins on Saturday, that probably means Rask again on Sunday.

In Game 6 the Caps had 54 shots on goal, 17 that missed the net and another 23 that were blocked. That’s 94 shot attempts in 60 minutes, or one every 38 seconds.

They had 18 PP SOGs.

And one goal.

Mario Lemieux actually had an 8-point game in the playoffs more recently. He had five goals and three assists in a 10-7 win over the Flyers in Game 5 of the second round of the 1989 Stanley Cup playoffs. That would be the last game the Penguins would win that season. The Flyers won Games 6 and 7 to close out the series. And Lemieux was not even the first player to accompish that feat. It was first done the year before by New Jersey’s Patrik Sundstrom, who had three goals and five assists in Game 3 of the second round of the playoffs…

Here’s another question though.

Is MSL a HOFer? I would say, just by looking at his raw numbers, borderline"yes". Man’s got 5 straight 80+ point seasons, all after turning 30, which is crazy, along with a Ross, Pearson, a Hart, and a Cup. Gives a couple more really “good” years, and it becomes a “most definitely”.

33/35/68 in 63 playoff games too.

AO had five elite years – his first five, in which he ran away with the league goal-scoring lead for that period and accumulated two Harts, a Ross, two Rockets, and three Pearsons. I think he’s got one or two more elite years in him when the pucks bounce his way or he figures out how to change, so call it a push, or slightly better for AO if you’re optimistic.

And as JP points out, AOs elite years were better than MSL’s elite years, which counts for something, I think.

At least three seasons in which he was in the three best players in the league, a Ross, a half a season that saw him finish in the top 15-ish in goal scoring and on a pace to beat even AO’s 65g season, his performance in the playoffs, the whole bit. Sid has five-and-a-half elite years, some of which are at an absurdly high level.

After Frank Boucher of the New York Rangers won the award seven times within eight years, Lady Byng was so impressed that she gave him the original trophy to keep. Lady Byng then donated a second trophy in 1935–36. When Lady Byng died in 1949 the NHL presented another trophy and changed the official name to the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy.3 In 1962, the original trophy was destroyed in a fire at Boucher’s home.6

A dad and his kid (maybe eight or nine years old) are doing similarly, and he’s telling his boy what each trophy is for. “That’s the Norris Trophy, for the best defenseman… That’s the Hart for Most Valuable Player” and so on. Then the kid points to the Lady Byng and asks, “What’s that one for?”

“That one’s for the biggest pussy in the League.”

After a recent embarrassing loss to Atlanta, Caps’ bench boss Bruce Boudreau heaped praise upon a single player, dimunitive pivot Keith Aucoin.

“Here’s a 5-foot-7 guy, there’s a reason he’s leading the American league in scoring.” Boudreau said. “He’s160 pounds soaking wet and he’s finishing checks and winning battles against big guys. There’s no reason that our other guys can’t do that.”

For that effort, Aucoin was rewarded with a healthy scratch the next game when Sergei Fedorov returned to the lineup and a subsequent demotion before seeing another NHL game, which was an interesting message to send to a team whose energy level has left a lot to be desired for a while now.

breed16’s comment: “this speaks to one of the (very few) frustrating aspects of Boudreau’s coaching style: a meritless rewards system.”

Ha. Old school, pre-accountability Bruce.

Lines tomorrow afternoon?

8-85-90
26-21-28
25-15-22
54-20-42

I put 26 on 2nd line based on DH’s latest line incarnation and the assumption that 54 and 20 are here to play. IMO, better would be:

8-85-90
22-21-28
25-15-42
54-20-26

You could twist my arm to swap 26 for 42, sit 42, and add 83 to fourth line.

I sure as hell hope Recker isn’t in the line up on Saturday. Yes it sucks that Nick is out and Bourque is playing but putting an AHL goon into the lineup to go after Bourque is silliness.

But… giving the Habs something extra to worry/think about can’t hurt. If they get obsessed with wondering where 54 is and he’s stapled to the bench, not the worst thing.

I admit I’ve got a bad case of fan-love for Aucoin, but I do think a serious case can be made to try him at 1c, especially if 22 is on the wing opposite 8. 22 and 8 would help make up for Aucoin’s lack of muscle, while having a pure shooter and a net-crasher is about the ideal set-up for a pure passer like Aucoin.

(The problem of course is draws. Aucoin has become a lot better with them at the A level, but it remains to be seen whether his veteran guile can offset the freak-of-nature centermen on the N level.)

And why even list a 4th line with Hunter behind the bench? (I say that as criticism of Hunter.)

28-85-90 seem to be developing some chemistry, and I’d like to see if that continues to develop.

Still plenty of time between now and then for Hershey to make moves and for Washington to make moves which impact Hershey.

Yes, AHL CDR lists usually due a week after NHL trade deadline.

I noted last night, I don’t expect Aucoin to stay up that long, but if it was closer to the trade deadline and CDR than that would be a topic of discussion, like it was with Beagle staying up last season.

Vokes left FLA to play for a contender. His current team is fighting to get in the playoffs, DET is #1 in the West. Think he’d go ahead and drop it for a few months in the Spring.

Curious, has anyone ever seen that confirmed by a local reporter?

I don’t recall anyone reporting an NMC at the time of the contract, but there was a lot going on at the time, especially with focus on the cap hit on a one year deal. Even with McPhee’s view of NMCs, as noted, this is the type of contract where it’s less risky to hand out and makes sense Vokoun would have wanted one, but looking for a source other than capgeek to confirm.

Even if he has one, I don’t think he would necessarily use it to prevent a trade. He wants to play in the playoffs, and it’s not like he’s established any roots or brought his family to DC.

I was thinking that if the Caps do in fact make the playoffs, that their chances of a play-off run might be better than in year’s past. Their current style of play may be more conducive to playoff success as it may frustrate opponents.

I just think it would be funny if the Caps beat out FLA for the three seed and then went on to win the Cup or come out of the East. I honestly would have no words.

Yep, that’s been an ongoing problem and a byproduct of a no-possession/passive system.

The Caps spend less time 5v4 per game than any team in the League other than COL. Now, part of that is obviously “good” in that everyone would rather a PP end before the two-minutes are up as the result of a goal-scored, but they’re opps/game are near the bottom as well.

It’s been going on since yesterday, multiple people; cumulative effect type thing.

The last was a tweet stating there was a risk in bringing Aucoin up implying that waivers was a concern right away, which it isn’t. Aucoin is not subject to waivers again (he cleared at the beginning of the season) unless/until he plays in 10 NHL GP or is on the NHL roster for 30 days (cumulative).

by sk84fun_dc on Feb 3, 2012 11:10 AM EST up reply actions

Waivers question:
If waivers are required, is the player’s cap hit calculated from the day they are called up or the day they clear?

"You do that, you go to the box, you know. Two minutes, by yourself, you know and you feel shame" -Denis Lemieux

by leacha on Feb 3, 2012 11:44 AM EST up reply actions

Coming up, recall day counts as a day on the active roster, going down does not, if the club notifies the player early in day. I think being on the active roster counts toward the cap.

"Money talks. I listen."

by apk3000 on Feb 3, 2012 11:50 AM EST up reply actions

To be clear, waivers and re-entry waivers (coming back up, if required) are two different things and the most recent two cases with Aucoin and Eakin did not require waivers.

paraphrasing…see 50.9 in the CBA for exact wording on some of this as it relates to the cap and days on the roster

5pm (NY time) is a key time in the day unless the player practiced or there was a day game.

Aucoin should start counting today; called up late, not on roster as of 5pm, eysterday; didn’t practice with the NHL team and no game last night. FWIW, I’m assuming the Caps had planned to announce Aucoin’s recall today not last night before the twitter news, but doesn’t matter, he shouldn’t count against the cap and in terms of days on the NHL roster should start counting today.

Eakin should count for yesterday since he practiced with the team before being sent down.

Those examples don’t involve waivers. As it relates to re-entry waivers, a player on re-entry waivers cannot be placed on the NHL team’s active roster until they clear re-entry so they would start counting once they cleared, that is my understanding, but I will confirm.

by sk84fun_dc on Feb 3, 2012 11:56 AM EST up reply actions   2 recs

Can you imagine all of the hullabaloo if Potulny had outed the call-up in some way in which the cap was devalued? Lulz all around.

I’m 98.5% sure the answer is yes. On the roster until noon tomorrow.

Note, it’s an issue when trades are made, etc., teams want the flexibility to be able to send a player down if bringing in a player.

by sk84fun_dc on Feb 3, 2012 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

In spurts, Wellman has played well for the Wild. IIRC, he hurt his wrist/hand last time he was up. Going to be interesting to see how he does in the NYR organization.

Note, Hershey plays Connecticut (NYR AHL affiliate) Saturday night in Hershey so I’d expect Wellman will play against Hershey this weekend, along with Bouchard’s return to Hershey.

Okay….here’s one from Bleacher Report (lulz)

Here’s one from TheHockeyWriters

Another one here from SBNation Pittsburgh in 2011 that concludes the trade was “worth it” because Dupuis was re-signed.

Part of why Shero pulled the trigger on the deal was that he felt the Penguins could re-sign Hossa in the offseason. However, when Hossa ended up signing with Detroit, the question quickly became (almost to the point of meme status on message boards), “Was the trade worth it?”

Three years later, I can now definitively say, “Yes, it was worth it.”

I haven’t heard of any work ethic issues, and he is skating, but missing that much development time probably doesn’t help his overall ceiling. If he’s still available and the Caps are picking at 10-15, then by all means, select the guy with 1C upside and a strong two-way game. Just be aware that there’s significant projection risk and he may not ever reach that upside.

It’s good reasoning. The Wild are playing a pretty low-event brand of hockey, if I recall correctly, which means that they’d likely see more ties and hence more shootouts. A guy that converts ~50% of the time versus ~33% of the time might mean an extra two or three points in the standings.

So while this season has thus far shown why such a sentiment is NOT faultless, now is as good a time as any to cling to it as an iron-clad truism. Caps’ fans should not boast to see the team’s future, to predict their imminent successes or failures. It is foolhardy and a road to "I-told-you-so’s" and red ears.

What they should do is keep the faith, knowing full well that the season still holds for the Caps 30 games, a trade deadline, and two of the team’s best players’ endeavors to return to the ice.

Ok, more waiver info. Rechlicz is on waivers because up until now he has not cleared waivers this season. Because he just signed his NHL contract for this season and this is the first time he has been assigned to Hershey this season while on an NHL contract.

Rechlicz’ contract status and years of pro hockey; this is his 5th season as a pro, IIRC (and his ELC was a previous contract with the NYI so it’s not his first NHL contract year.)

They are only allowed a certain number of contracts. Adding him, means they is one less.

by RCheli on Feb 3, 2012 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

It is the former. See the more helpful sk8 post below.

by RCheli on Feb 3, 2012 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

In simple terms, they lost a contract slot.

NHL teams are allowed to have 50 players under contract for a season.

They weren’t at 50, so it’s not as big of an issue as it has been some years, but that’s the biggest issue.

by sk84fun_dc on Feb 3, 2012 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

There was a minimum cash (cap hit) output. Only issue is number of pro contracts. GMGM probably figured he wasn’t going to add many contracts between now and July when his contract is up.

Joel Rechlicz on waivers because he signed entry-level deal with Islanders in 2008. Also would’ve needed it because he signed mid-year.

No, it has nothing to do with signing mid-year. If this was his first NHL contract and he was waiver exempt, a mid-year signing wouldn’t impact waivers, because he was playing in North America in the minors. The mid-season waiver rule relates to players playing overseas after the NHL regular season starts.

I’d let the ELC comment slide, plenty of people make that mistake; the mid-year comment I just don’t understand.

FWIW, if he required waivers due to that rule, it would have been in order to play for the Caps, not in order to be sent to the minors.

by sk84fun_dc on Feb 3, 2012 1:04 PM EST up reply actions

You are correct, I’ve said the same in the past.

And he wasn’t referring to the rule I was thinking he was; he was noting what I noted earlier here that he requires waivers because he was just signed now and needs waivers to be sent down since he hasn’t cleared before this season.

by sk84fun_dc on Feb 3, 2012 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

I figured he was attempting (ATTEMPTING) to explain that Rechlicz was on waivers because he was being assigned to Hershey for the first time this season, just like all the other non-ELC guys with NHL contracts have to pass through waivers to go to Hershey at the start of the season. Rechlicz’s situation being he didn’t sign an NHL contract until mid-season. But, obviously, that’s a lot of info to cram into a tweet.

watch, I’m sure I mucked something up in attempting to explain why Rechlicz was on waivers today :)

Sad, if true. As discussed the previous two days, I wish our management team were focused more on puck possession, the power play, Fenwick, etc. etc. which is where our real issues are. Maybe Brouwer or Ersk (i.e. not Karl or Hendy) can rearrange Bourque’s nose but, if not, let’s just hustle and win.

Was that worth burning a contract on? Especially for a team that probably wants to make at least one move towards the deadline? I’m just so confused by this, the handling of Schultz, the handling of Kundratek, Erskine, Eakin, Aucoin, etc.

Why is a developing player like Eakin playing five shifts a night in WSH instead of sowing his oats in HER? Why was Kundratek getting NHL minutes instead of guys that can actually play in the NHL, like Schultz, or Erskine in spells? Why was the team burning a contract and salary cap dollars to do that?

Why is a guy like Joel Ward not playing on the PK? His entire value is on the defensive side of the puck and eating harder minutes so that your skill guys can take advantage of the scrubs. I don’t get it.

by Knee high to a duck on Feb 3, 2012 2:08 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

They’re only at 47 contracts right now. Very unlikely the 50-K limit is going to prevent them from doing anything.

Agreed on all the rest, though, you know that (though the cap dollars don’t matter, since the team has been well into LTIR all year).

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

by J.P. on Feb 3, 2012 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

Adding extra contracts now might not hurt this year (at 47 it probably won’t), but it might hurt next year, or the year after.

Good call on the LTIR stuff, but I still don’t like burning actual dollars when the team isn’t swimming in cash, a la the Maple Leafs or the Habs. Not that a half-dozen game checks for Kundratek and two for Rechlicz is going to break the bank, but it’s the principle. Just like Steckel and Erskine and Poti didn’t look like terrible overpays at the time, but cumulatively, they’re the difference between having Matt Hendricks on your 4th line and Marcel Goc.

by Knee high to a duck on Feb 3, 2012 2:16 PM EST up reply actions

Marcel Goc isn’t a 4th liner on any team I can think of, which is my point. Goc would push someone else down to the 4th line and you’d end up with two stronger lines.

Let’s do a thought exercise: How about we assume that there’s a shutdown line that’s going to get hard-matched to the other teams’ first lines.

The current, healthy (humor me), roster looks something like

8/19/20
42/21/25
90/15/28
26/(83/85/50)/22

Let’s say that you get Goc and you want him as your hard minutes C.

The lines look more like:

8/19/20
42/Goc/21
90/15/28
25/(85/26/83/50)/(22/26/50).

Those lines look a lot better to me, and I think those lines are a move or two away from looking a lot better than that. The current lines, even with a healthy roster, are hard to envision a winning roster with.

by Knee high to a duck on Feb 3, 2012 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

But the Rechlicz contract is off the books July 1.

Obviously the cumulative effects point is well-taken, generally, but I don’t think the Recker deal fits this point. It’s just a fucking embarrassment, that’s all.

Ditto on the confused part here.

I agree with you on all the points you raise.

Just pointing out why I thought Rechlisz spent a few days on the roster. As for whether it was worth burning a roster spot, it comes down to whether his presence averted another Downie/Alzner fight. If it did, then it was worth it. If not, then probably not. Pretty hard to prove a negative, so we’ll likely never know.

I think about death every day.

I’ll tell you. I want to live now more than I’ve ever wanted to live before, because I’ve struggled with depression most of my life, and sometimes death looked better than living. And now, where I’m at, I want to live. And it always scares me because sometimes you—it’s like when you go, be careful what you ask for, be careful what you pray for. It’s like sometimes in life, when you’ve finally got things figured out, things change. And I’m kind of afraid of that. I’m kind of figuring things out now. I’m getting everything under control, and that scares me because as soon as you do that, God’s going to say, OK, come on [laughs]. But then I always think, no, God, you had me here. I’m walking around with a bullet in my head and a scar on my neck. There’s a reason. I think you want me to grow old and help people and be a wise old man.

Poor Jouds. Played in that awful “extra time” loss to the Kings and shipped right back down.

saw that earlier, not surprising, he was recalled because of illness/injuries; did fine in his debut, could be recalled again if they need a bottom 6 center.

Yeah, wasn’t this supposed to be a really deep draft class not long ago?

That’s why my eyebrows were raised. I wonder if any of it has to do with the rash of injuries among the top draft stock? Or if someone’s just trying to mess with everyone’s heads.

wasn’t it being compared to the 2003 draft class recently?

Honestly, that’s what i had been hearing for months now. I just dont really know what defines a “deep” draft class. # of kids from the OHL? # of kids on WJC rosters? How well there going to do in the NHL?

In the end, i feel like a lot of these predictions are irrelevant due to the complex, unknown nature of the development of any one hockey player.

Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!

Lot of injuries, and I think overall the draft-eligibles at the WJCs were underwhelming.

I think that’s really it. The draft is deep, but a lot of the guys on the medium-high end carry more injury risk than perhaps GMs would like.

I don’t think that’s it so much as the projected lot from where playoff teams will pick—16 to 30—isn’t particularly highly regarded. The top 10-15 or so is. Beyond that I don’t think there’s been as much separation or huge jumps in development as many would hope. Still some key months ahead for that to change, of course.

Per Aucoin…“with Patick McNeill who is one of the better offensive defensive in the league who can move the puck around..”

Look, I realize this is an old topic (but for me one without a real conclusion…or me being dismissive).

Just curios why has P. McNeill never been given a shot in Wsh (and I do not count his call up when I saw on the precap ice in ANA in Feb 11…ahh..those were the days with Bruce).

I know Vogs is a proponent of Patty and I also question why has the kid never been given a shot (is Kundrátek THAT much ahead of the dude?)
