very pleased with that start, go caps go!

hopefully it’s the start of a nice streak of strongly played games.

Nice start, but the game seems to have evened up since then. Go for the kill, Caps!!

It seems to me the Leafs are getting very good positioning in the Caps zone, but Neuvy is locked in pretty well, and a lot of passes are just missing. But if the Leafs keep it up, I think that this game could be tied sooner rather than later.

Fairly typical of these Caps. Get a lead, sit back and play to protect. I much prefer to see them try and score more goals.

Same. When they get the lead, they seem to play not to give it up, rather than building on it. That’s one of the things I loved about the ‘09-’10 Caps.

Goalie Guild just put out an interesting series of tweets on things he sees Neuvy doing differently this game than in late January.

Neuvirth: Crouch more pronounced w/ better bend at the waist. Sets his shoulders a little lower but more powerful moving in and out of bfly

Looks like his center of gravity is a bit lower as a result. Might see him be a bit more centered, controlled, & bit more balanced overall.

Not easy to tell since Neuvirth is already a fairly quiet and calm bfly goalie. Just my thoughts. Seems like he’s been watching some video!

He does seem to be playing better the last few games than previously – Goalie Guild might have a point.

Failure is always an option.

It makes sense for the Oilers, due to all the ELC’s they have. They need to stay above the cap floor somehow, right?

Failure is always an option.

by timmyv38 on Feb 25, 2012 8:17 PM EST up reply actions

It’s more than ELCs; I do think a veteran player willing to stay in Edmonton is a big factor and Hemsky (when healthy) still contributes. It’s high, but I think the Edmonton-factor combined with it only being a 2 year contract are big factors in why it’s 5M per year.

by sk84fun_dc on Feb 25, 2012 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

I was a bit surprised at first, but then I looked at their situation and when the contract ends, and it makes sense. It should be ending right around when all those ELC’s do, which makes sense for Edmonton. It might be more than Hemsky deserves, but I can’t see it hurting Edmonton. If Hemsky plays up to his potential, it could be a steal.

Failure is always an option.

by timmyv38 on Feb 25, 2012 8:38 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, that aspect of the ELCs is true; agree, the 2 years is a big factor, he’s only 28yo. Some of the talking heads on twitter last night were amusing debating this contract. If Edmonton has to overpay to get most UFAs to go there, makes more sense to keep the known player who wants to stay.

It’s also Hemsky’s salary for this season even if his cap hit is a little lower on this contract.

by sk84fun_dc on Feb 25, 2012 8:41 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, i agree. it’s really not a bad deal. players don’t seem to give injury discounts (which sucks for the green contract). hemsky’s a legit top liner, so 5 mill isn’t a bad contract.
