With all due respect to Mr. and Mrs. Hyperbole: This is the biggest game of the year so far.

  • Playing the team tied with us in points and games played.
  • Only 20 games left after tonight.
  • Need momentum heading into a five game home stand and six of the next seven at home.
  • Need to prove that last night was about the team and just about the patheticness of the opponent.
  • The Jets have already played and only got one point. A non-SO victory puts the Caps ahead of the Jets in ROW.

Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

Actually, the Caps are already 3 ahead of the Jets in ROW. Also 3 ahead of Toronto and 5 ahead of Florida. In the end, that could be the difference.

Reimer’s 1-4 in his last 5 games with a GAA over 4.00 and a SV% around.890. So, in other words, he’ll probably throw a shutout tonight.

hahaha, the way this season is going I wouldn’t be surprised if you are bang on.

on another note, as much as I hate Mike Green, I really like his quote before tonights game where he says that the team realizes Neuvy is standing on his melon and they want to play hard for him.

"Must Win"

these are not must wins, the term should be used with about 5 games left in the season if the Caps are trailing a playoff spot or the division by 2 or 3 points.

all we have to do is keep pace. that means a point tonight will go a long way. this is gonna be a dog fight to the end.

i mean, come on… this is the SE Division. the Florida Wolski’s and the Winnipeg Byfuglien’s are going to stumble down the stretch along with us. every body just relax, leave OV, GMGM and the rest of the guys alone. we’ll be in the 3 spot, playing the Senators or Penguins. then we can worry and criticize everybody in the Caps organization.

I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude.

by tahgs on Feb 25, 2012 5:25 PM EST reply actions

There is a huge difference between a mathematical “must-win” and a psychological “must-win.” If the Caps lose tonight they are far from out of the playoffs. However, per my post above, there are a lot of reasons why the Capitals really must win tonight.

Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

good point. makes sense, i just think it is early to call these games “must wins” of any sort (psychological – mathematical)… puts to much pressure on the team.

there is 2 months of hockey to be played, that’s a long time with a lot of games.

Food for thought:

By my math, the Caps are 23-4-1 when getting League-avg. or better SV%, 24-6-4 when getting League avg. or better S%, 20-0-0 when getting both. In other words, too many nights when one or the other (O or D) has completely abandoned them. When both are average, it’s been good enough.

Then, we’ve also had some nights this year where our offense has completely abandoned us as well.

by CapsFan75 on Feb 25, 2012 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

Those records are decidedly above average…so I find it weird that we only seem to require average results for those stats to achieve those records with the advanced stats this team has.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

by Davethecapsfan on Feb 25, 2012 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

Well, those don’t really reflect “average.” Take last night for example – both above average and a win. But the S% was 16.7% (League-avg. 8.9%) and the SV% was .968 (League-avg. around .911).

There haven’t been many games where they’ve been at or around average in both metrics.

Our friend, Gormley, is being his usual provocative self and is even more provocative than usual, as in proposing the trade of Ovechkin for Rick Nash. No kidding!

If the Caps were to make that trade, I’d say have Columbus throw in their 1st rounder as well. (Okay, that would not be smart of Columbus to do.)

Does anyone have a link to one of the graphs that show puck possession from last nights game? I’m not sure which stat it is officially, but it has two lines that indicate possession of each team marching across from left to right, with goals from each team indicated, from the beginning to end of the game . I just wanted to see if last nights game graphic looked like what I perceived when watching the game…

Meh I can understand that. He’s much more of a legend. I watched a bunch of Ovi’s highlights from a few years ago though, and its astounding how much more jump he had as opposed to now. Watching him play back then was much more fun too, so that’s where the “nostalgia” comes from.

Nothing could be tackier than stars everywhere, but I concede the weagle might not work as a crest. However, i hate wordmarks, and vastly prefer graphics.

The only non-wordmark crest that could work is the diving eagle. I don’t like blue, too entrained in red, but I am in boyhood love with the throwbacks. If we need a third, I would like a red with diving eagle.

Their D is horrible at gap management. Disjointing them with things like Chimera speed or passing the puck up and down in their zone should create some solid scoring chances

Don’t like how slow he is especially once he goes down. Also hate that he seems to have a problem not playing a few games. I know he signed with us over Detroit because he wanted to play but we have a young goalie who needs some games as well and it isn’t like he is playing at a level that makes us noticeably better with him in net and of late having him in makes us much worse.
