Wow…. no one here yet?

Morning Timmy.

I’m moving kind of slow today. Major sniffles and cold symptoms yesterday, and Dog deciding to not sleep last night. I finally had to kick him out of my room and shut the door around 2 amish. I’ve got an industrial-sized cup of coffee, but it isn’t helping much.

There's always more to learn about Hockey.

I had an interesting run-in with Mennonites once, at least I think they were Mennonites.

I was working a convention thing up at Antietam, and I had to travel a ways off the battlefield to find this Mennonite guy named Rufus so I could borrow some hay bales. He had a yard full of scary chickens that looked like they wanted to chase me, and it took me forever to find the front door (I kept waiting for someone to blast me with a hunting rifle or something).

They were pretty interesting people. Looked like something right out of early 20th century, even though they drove cars and such. It has to be difficult to keep that kind of heritage in this day and age.

Football’s taken a dive the last few years. They also greatly overextended themselves with renovating Byrd stadium, and they also built an entire new basketball arena in the last 10 years. Budget got too big for what revenue was being generated.

The bowl system is a nightmare. Schools lose money all the time on those things, but the BCS payouts are pretty lucrative, even though you have to share those among your entire conference.

exactly. All the non-BCS conferences, and I-AA? Bleeding money. D2? Hemorrhaging cash. And D3? ha ha ha ha ha.

Northeastern cut football a couple years ago. There was a huge outcry. Their stance was, we spend $3 million on football and nothing to show for it. If we want to be competitive within our own conference, it’s going tor require about $8 million a year. And that’s a non-BCS conference. That $3 million can be put to use in other places.

Incidentally, yesterday, when I listed Ke$ha in that music discussion, I was NOT saying she was good. I was making the point of going from the ridiculous (her) to the sublime (Mumford & Sons) in response to J’s upset question about what his generation thought was good music.

Pandora has had a huge influence on my music selections. When my mom was a kid, this sort of thing didn’t exist. It was all the radio, American Bandstand and what her friends were listening to.

Pandora takes my preferences into account, and exposes me to all sorts of songs I don’t think I’d ever have found on my own. And it often crosses cultural/age/‘era’ lines.

I’ve found new stuff through the music section of OnDemand. Also, if I’m in a store like F.Y.E. where they have scanning/listening stations, I’ll grab something that looks interesting, scan it, and give it a listen. If I’ve heard through word-of-mouth and haven’t had a chance to go to F.Y.E. or I can’t find it OnDemand, I’ll youtube a couple/few songs.

Trying to get a job that I’m actually already doing, as odd as that sounds. I’ve been doing a job that’s beyond my pay grade for a year or two (and not getting paid for it). It’s the wonders of the Civil Service System. We can’t hire or fire at any level. Everything has to go through OPM.

I blame that nutcase Charles Guiteau for shooting President Garfield and hastening Civil Service Reform under President Arthur, but it had to happen. It really wasn’t feasible to keep up the whole patronage system, and it was too corrupt.

I just wish there was a common sense element to the whole thing. I know jobs have to be competitive, but if you have people ALREADY WORKING IN THE JOB, and you can’t just bump them up from within, it kinda blows.

However, Virginia has now ruined this song for me. I never liked the line “I want a doctor/to take a picture/ so I can see you from the inside as well.”

And now, I actively am disgusted by it because of the vaj probe thing Virginia wants to force on women who need to abort a pregnancy.

Was it an unfair division placement or it just happened to be really tough?

by bathwithtoaster on Feb 22, 2012 2:11 PM EST up reply actions

Totally unfair, pretty awful actually, I dont vent here much I prefer posting pics of monkeys blowing themselves….but I have really struggled with this season. My son who is Mite aged tried out for squirts since the CBHL had a rule change making mites cross ice, after a year of my son playing full ice with Refs, I did not want him to go backwards. So we had 16 kids at try-outs, 3 of them still mites and only 2 2nd year squirts and we took 15. They placed us in the A division of the CBHL….Not only have we lost every game, but we have only finished a couple (due to 10 goal mercy rule)…we have 12 GF and 127 GA….Clearly should have been a B team. My kid who LOVES hockey has gotten very frustrated and often questions why are we even going to a game. Now they lack confidence from getting murdered so much so that doesnt help….So we entered this tourney as a B team and won it playing 5 tough tight games….hopefully that helps the confidence

hahaha….thanks. Winning this weekend really helped things out. Unfortunately with all of the losing came alot of Adult issues around the rink. So we will probably try out at a few different programs in the area…ones that have a much larger tryout. Former ‘Seinfeld’ actor shoots himself in the head, survives

The website has posted audio of a 911 call von Bargen made from his Ohio home Monday morning. During the call, he tells a dispatcher: “I was supposed to go to the hospital and I didn’t want to. They were supposed to amputate at least a few toes.”
Von Bargen, 61, says in the call that he shot himself in the temple with a .38 Colt and that he can’t open his eyes. He tells the operator that he has already had one leg amputated and was “tired,” referring to the procedure slated for his other leg.
The call ends with police entering von Bargen’s apartment and they can be heard telling him to not move his hands and asking whether he has any other guns around.

Hi kids!

I would have joined you earlier, but for the past 5 days, Comcast has decided we really don’t need TV or Internet for several hours of the day in prime job-hunting/OTOT-playing time. I’d love to see this credited somehow, but I’m not going to hold my breath. Blue isn’t my best color.

by Aliceanna on Feb 22, 2012 3:22 PM EST reply actions

Hi Alice! I’d definitely press for the credit. I have in the past, and gotten it without too much trouble.

Yes I’m at work, still feeling icky, but I can’t really afford the time off right now.

There's always more to learn about Hockey.

by WordsOnIce on Feb 22, 2012 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

I’m sorry to hear you’re not feeling well, still. I hope it doesn’t hang around too long.

I guess I probably will try to set the credit from them. They have actually credited things in the past. I’m just not a big fan of Comcast in general these days, as their tentacles seem to be all over everthing. Plus, they employ Chuck Gormley.

Question for you all…

About how much do you pay for cable/internet? My combined bill is currently 185 a month for my cable internet and pretty basic cable package (no movie channels, and not even all the standard “cable” channels people tend to get). This seems INSANELY high, but my room mate won’t let me cancel and switch to a different service because he doesn’t want to deal with cox.

Well, it’s probably $100 bucks here, Comcast “preferred basic, no-HD” and DSL. Verizon is digging for FIOS in the development though… I expect to pay much more soon.

We were at 100…but then our 2 year promotional deal ran out. What I want to do, is have him cancel, and restart in my name…so to start a deal over.

we just call and threaten to switch. Then comcast gives us the promo rate for 2 more years.

Our cable TV/Internet service in DC from Comcast is about $125 a month. That’s with 3 tv boxes (2 of which are HD, for which they charge us). We have Digital Preferred (the lowest tier at which one can get NHLN included), and I’m on a 9-month promo of free HBO & Showtime. We also have the “slowest” home Internet speed, but that means about a max speed of 2Mbps (a good-quality Caps game cap, about 2GB, DLs in 15-20 mins).

I would call and haggle with the cable company, and see what they can do for you. They would usually rather make you a deal than have you (threaten to) take your business elsewhere.

by Aliceanna on Feb 22, 2012 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

I pay 160 …have 3 HD boxes…multiple room DVR and ALL channels ,…Fios

Yeah, we have the option for FIOS..which is a faster internet speed…I am thinking of trying to convince him to switch. Plus, his Dad paid for center ice for us, and Cox does not transmit it in HD…seems like such a waste..the quality is just horrible. Worse than typical standard definition.

by RockinRed4Life on Feb 22, 2012 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

If you have the FIOS option, definitely recommend going that way. It is generally cheaper than cable, from everyone I know who has it. Also, work them for package deals, too. Call up and say you’re considering switching from Cox, what kind of specials is FIOS running for new subscribers. You might be able to get a higher-level package for a lower intro price, or a few months of free premiums. Mention that you have the Center Ice thing to them, too, as it might make a difference and you’ll want to make sure there’s no problems transferring it).

I’m paying about $171 after it’s all said and done in Comcast.

I have Preferred Basic, HD, DVR, and the sports package with NFL Redzone. One box, one cable modem.

Sounds like I’m paying too much, but I’m waiting for FIOS to finally make it here.

Yeah, apparently McDonnell has his eyes on the VP slot under Romney, and I think Romney’s camp made clear to him that this bill was fucking nuts.

Some great stuff on The Daily Show with McDonnell and other VA Republicans throwing around the term “rape” for all sorts of things from TSA patdowns to the Obama healthcare plan’s mandatory insurance, yet scoffing at women using the term “rape” for “objects inserted into a woman’s vagina against her will.”

Oh, I didn’t realize that’s what you were asking. No, the reason for the ultrasound in general, is part of an “Informed Consent” bill. There is no medical reason for any of it. It is done in the hopes that seeing the sonogram image and hearing the heartbeat will so traumatize the poor woman that it will dissuade her from the choice she has already made.

Ok so just a blood test determines the pregnancy … then the abortion is done…honestly I dont even know how an abortion is administered nowadays, is it a pill?

Not even a blood test. Usually just a piss test and a pelvic.

Pretty sure the abortion pill is not used in most places (even though it’s safer and cheaper than the surgical procedure—which is still fairly safe and cheap). Vacuum aspiration has been the most common method. Takes about 10-15 minutes. Recovery is akin to a bad period, typically.

Checking my info, it appears the Medication Abortion is becoming more common.

by Aliceanna on Feb 22, 2012 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

The Planned Parenthood site is a good resource. I went to take a look at that when I realized I didn’t know about what an abortion entailed.

I’m happy that I haven’t had cause to know outside of curiosity.

by Joran on Feb 22, 2012 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

Planned Parenthood is an amazing organization in all facets of its work, which I strongly urge everyone to support. Their mission is a noble one, and it was founded by one of my all-time heroes, Margaret Sanger.

by Aliceanna on Feb 22, 2012 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

Medication abortion can only be performed very early in the pregnancy…no later than 9 weeks. It’s a pill, a vaginal suppository and … that’s it…a very heavy period type of bleeding.

After doing some googling, it seems that at such early stages of pregnancy when most abortions are done (around 8 weeks), an abdominal ultrasound doesn’t really pick up anything. Because the fetus isn’t developed enough yet to even show up. So, you know, it should totally have more rights than a BORN, independent, female person.

by Aliceanna on Feb 22, 2012 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

I didnt see that….I could however see why in some cases you may want it as your own decision to make….but I guess it would be important to know that there was a living fetus before you abort it?

I can’t think of a single woman who has made her decision to the point that she’s lying on a doctor’s table, who would say, hmm, pretty sure I’m going to terminate this pregnancy, but, what the hell, lemme take a look at the little bugger first!

The notion that women don’t make these decisions from an informed perspective is what really chaps my ass. Do they think people are getting abortions with less thought than getting manicures? Honestly, I’ll wager that every single woman choosing an abortion is FAR more informed about what her choice means to both the fetus and herself than the bulk of teenagers who “choose” to become mothers are informed about what their choice means to their child and themselves.

I’m not disparaging anyone’s choice to have a baby vs. terminating a pregnancy, just pointing out the absurdity of anti-choice people passing these sorts of bills on such bullshit reasoning.

by Aliceanna on Feb 22, 2012 4:33 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

My wife was 16 and was pressured by her parents to have the abortion. There is not a day goes by that she doesnt think about and question it. She carries it with a heavy heart.

To say that every woman makes an informed decision is simply not true. I have zero opinion on abortion. It is not my business.

She did not make her decision, in that case, and I am terribly sorry she had to go through that. Her case is just as clear an argument for why the choice belongs to the pregnant woman and no one else.

by Aliceanna on Feb 22, 2012 4:40 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Well technically she did decide to do it. Out of fear tho. She is at peace with it because she believes you have gone where you went to get where you are. But it is still part of her person.

And my 2nd point was not referring to her. More along the lines of the severely uneducated folks out there who prolly shouldnt have babies anyway.

Also, I didn’t say every woman makes an informed decision. I was making a comparative statement about teenagers who choose to have kids in their teens, often for some very messed up reasons, without being fully informed what it will mean for their lives and their children’s lives.

I believe for very early term pregnancies (i.e. the ones for which most people have abortions), you need to do a transvaginal ultrasound to even pick up the fetus.

When my wife was pregnant with our kid, her first ultrasound was a transvaginal one.
