He’s probably “Interim Executive Director” while they think up a more awesome permanent title, like “College Hockey’s Swinging’ D.” Y’know, something that really pops on a business card.

Thank you guys. I plan to reach out to Bruce for advice on handling the “interim” tag.
Meanwhile, great Caps-related story this group might appreciate: I had to take the dog to the ER here in Mass. last night. (Most importantly, she’ll be ok, though she had to stay overnight.)

In a perverse way it is the difference between this year’s Caps and last year’s. Specifically, the inability of this team to drag things into the bonus round. After 59 games this year, the Caps have 29 wins. Last year, they had 30. The difference is the split between losses in regulation and losses in the bonus round. Last year, split was 19-10 (regulation/extra time). This year, it is 25-5. That’s five Bettman Points that the Caps don’t have this year that they had last year.

The difference is, Karlsson’s breakout year is when he’s 21. Green’s was at 23. Karlsson’s at a point per game (or close) — 57 in 60 — when at 21, Green went 2/10/12.

This was the argument for Crosby to win the Calder in 2006. Ovechkin was 23 months older and hence was a more mature player, thus accounting for his superior production. Was that a valid argument?

Ovechkin’s season was better than Crosby’s, so I think he should’ve won the Calder. However, I was more impressed with Crosby’s season because of his age, and I thought that Crosby would have a better overall career. His injuries have obviously changed that.
Ovechkin lost out on a season because of the lockout (and has an unfortunate birthday). I don’t see how it’s fair to hold that against him.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$1328.52!
When Green was nominated for the first time for the Norris, he had played 242 regular season and seven playoff games (he would play 14 more playoff games after that 2009 regular season ended). Assuming Karlsson plays in the rest of his team’s games, his totals will be 217 and six (I assume he will play more when this regular season is over). Are they that different?

Right, but I was responding to the Green-lite comment, noting that his breakout year was two years earlier than Green.
It’s been said before, but that ’08 draft may turn out to be the best positional draft ever (for defensemen).
Doughty, Bogosian, Pietrangelo, Schenn, Myers, Karlsson, Sbisa, Del Zotto, and Carlson all went in the first round.
(Teubert, Gardiner, and Cuma were the other defensemen picked in the first round. Teubert and Gardiner are in the NHL finally, while Cuma is the only one who hasn’t made it yet.)
But at least Cuma was mentioned in a Culture Club song.

It’s only because the other teams in the Southeast are similarly faulted that the Caps still harbor any hopes of making the playoffs. Shockingly, if they win Wednesday night in Ottawa they’ll still be tied for first in the division.
How can you give up on that?
To this I raise my mug of unadulterated coffee. I thought it was a well done article that gently dissects McPhee’s haplessness in finding a complementary center for this team. I’m still stuck on McPhee being more in love with his own prospects than all but two or three suckers GM’s in the lig, who surely by now know better.
Cross check and all call.
Considering Toronto in 8th and Florida atop our division (although Toronto has played 2 more games) both have 65 points, seems stupid to say winning our division is the only way for us to make the playoffs.

Not really (though I don’t like asking people not to discuss valid topics).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
From Vogs:
In their 30 road games this season, the Capitals have owned a lead after the first period four times. They’ve been outscored by a combined 33-14 in the first 20 minutes of those 30 road games.
Essentially, they’re trying to win 40-minute road games while spotting their hosts nearly two-thirds of a goal each time out. Tough hill to climb, that.
We could go back and forth all day about whether it’s the coaches’ responsibility to have his team mentally prepared to play or its wholly on they players themselves, but the bottom line is that, on the road, they haven’t been ready from opening puck-drop.
If this team misses the playoffs, there will be any number of things you can point to as the reasons why, but “slow starts on the road” will certainly make the list.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
No question. And if they play .500 on the road from here on out, they’re in.
Problem is, there’s no reason to believe they can or will.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
They have not had consecutive road wins since winning two in a row, eight days apart, December 7/15 against Ottawa and Winnipeg. Since they they are 4-9-3 on the road.
If you've read this far...seek help.
On January 23, Ted wrote:
Three games and three points on the road. This is an acceptable pace. Play 500 on the road and play well at home from here on out will help us dramatically in the standings.
We agreed, adding, “it would be more than acceptable. It’d be great.”
Since then, they’ve gone 2-4-1 away from home. That’s .357 (which is actually below where they were on January 23), not .500. And not acceptable.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Incidentally, if they were .500 since then, they’d have two more points and be tied (in points) with FLA, TOR and WPG.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
But haven’t they played road games against those teams? Or are we just assuming they won the road games that weren’t against them?

Definitely unnecessary. As for the trade itself, I think it was a win for all teams involved. Detroit gets a D who’s leading the Avs in ice time and is RFA at the end of the year (with Detroit having a real risk of losing Stuart UFA); Stevie Y gets another 1st round pick in a supposedly deep draft and now has I believe 5 picks in the 1st two rounds; and the Avs have plenty of youth and supposedly needed the Downie element, and if Troy Brouwer is worth a late 1st I think Downie has similar value (depending on what you believe about the quality of last year’s draft versus this year’s I guess.

From 97-06, picks 26-30 produced 2 2d line F, 3 1st line F, 5 2d pair D, 1 1st pair D, 1G. That’s 12 giving surplus value out of 50 picks.

COL got hosed. D are a very, very valuable commodity. Gritty, even psychopathic, F are considerably easier to find.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Frankly, I think Yzerman will have a hard time finding someone as good as Quincey with that pick (and he needs D). I’d have stopped right there.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Interesting. He certainly won’t get a D that can contribute right now like Quincey.
Perhaps this is a sign that Stevie Y is going for the full blow up and rebuild in hopes of competing in 3 years. Which would be weird, given they made the ECF last year.
But it’s the only way I can make sense of them parting with such a valuable asset for a pick.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Other theory: they need several picks on hand to go after Schneider (or Bernier etc.) this summer. Easier for them to sign good/decent D than it is for them to sign a goalie, so having assets to trade is hard to pass up.
Can’t see them needing firsts for that, but would definitely think of him as a fallback option. Are there enough games left for them to keep him from being a UFA if they act now though?
I think the number was 17 games or around that number (less than 20) so yes, but not many more. Agree that isn’t likely but the theory about TBL turning around and using the pick(s) in a trade is a good one.
CBA says 28 games played of 30 minutes or more, and Bishop has that much TOI in 11 out of his 13 career games – so 17 is correct, if I’m not missing anything.
If Tampa Bay was to acquire him and get him that 17+ games, would he go to regular RFA status?
Failure is always an option.

He’s a UFA, correct? Would be an interesting guy for them to target but to me he’s another fallback.
What makes it all tougher is the timing. Schneider, Bernier, etc. seem to me like guys you target at the draft. But Bishop you’d need to move on now, and who knows for someone like Harding.
Yes, UFA this summer, IIRC.
So many risks with Bishop in the considering him RFA not UFA at this point, even if a team acquired him and planned to start him every game, there’s the risk of injury and the impact on games played.
Bob McK just tweeted Harding has a minor injury, day to day, not trade related.

I suppose that could be the case. I think the premise, if that is indeed their premise, is wrong: it’s easier to find a competent goalie than it is to find competent D.
I also think it’s much harder to find an elite goalie than anything else, but the odds of Schneider or Bernier or Quick or Harding turning out to be Roy or Brodeur are much, much, much longer than of them turning out to be, say, Fleury.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Even with the late pick, Yzerman still gains flexibility though, no? It’s a risky move, but I think he’s plus-EV on this. I hope it blows up in his face, and the odds are good that it does, but I think he made the right move, especially if TBL has an internal budget.
Also, if Pronman is right and the quality tiers in the draft are at 1, 3, 6 and 10, Stevie will want to stay in the lottery for sure. Adding Quincey might push him from 6 → 10ish.

Just a terrible joke of a trade.
Colorado had a surplus of defensemen, so moving one of them – even Quincey specifically – made sense. But to get Downie as the only return smacks of a team trying to dump salary without the blatant appearance of dumping salary.
Downie is being touted as a “20-goal scorer” because one year he posted a 19% shooting percentage playing alongside Stamkos and St. Louis and getting lots of PP TOI (7 of his 22 goals were PPGs).
Sherman has the fatal flaw of being unable to put himself in the position of his trading partner and think about why they might be willing to make certain deals. Tampa and Yzerman are, at present, in a similar situation to the Avalanche. They have an interesting core of players, but they’re not quite good enough to be a solid playoff team. The Avs lack scoring depth and defensive consistency, while the Bolts lack any semblance of defense or goaltending. Overall though, both teams are in similar positions.
Sherman should ask himself: “Why would Yzerman want to trade me Downie?” All the reasons that the Avs and Dater cite in support of Downie’s acquisition (grit, toughness, hustle, some scoring ability, cost-controlled) are in demand by both teams. Instead, he just went for it.
I tried to imagine Yzerman calling up GMs around the league and offering them Downie straight-up for a 1st round pick. Even in my imagination, their laughter was deafening.
Unleash the Apathy.
“Why would Y want to trade me Downie?” Maybe because he didn’t have the surplus of D and you need to give value to get value. COL traded from a position of depth to gain a position of weakness. Devil’s advocate.
And given how craptastic Stewart has been this season, maybe Downie isn’t a terrible replacement for that role.
Please, call me F&B.

Quality Dater trolling, but Denver’s a nice city and I enjoyed the Avs game I saw there a few years ago. It’s not really a bad hockey market; it just needs a management change.
But yeah, feminizing Dater’s first name and saying he writes “like a scorned woman” detracts from it. I like bloggers to troll intelligently.

The Hanson injury isn’t good, hopefully the surgery goes well. I do like that they are waiting to announce a recovery/return timeline for after he has the surgery.
I think the HBH managements and coaches knew it was likely someone could get called up given Ovechkin and Laich’s situations during the last game.
I’m a little surprised that it is Aucoin again and that they aren’t recalling someone like Potulny, nothing against Aucoin, just think Potulny has been playing well and has earned a look although if it is a recall for a player likely to be a scratch (they know more than we do) then doesn’t matter much.
Potulny would have to clear waivers, right?
"You do that, you go to the box, you know. Two minutes, by yourself, and you... feel shame" -Denis Lemieux
Potulny does not require re-entry waivers this season (he’s on a two-way contract and not making more than $105,000 in the minors (if CapGeek is correct about his AHL salary.) Same as Aucoin, he wouldn’t require waivers again until he plays in 10 NHL games or is on an NHL roster for 30 days (cumulative), whichever happens first.
Why is Coiner the only go-to guy?

Guesses: Vet, understands his role, so won’t mope, etc., if he doesn’t play; coaches are familiar with him now, low cap hit (true for a few players). Can play C and play on the PP.

I get all that, but at this point I’d call up someone new (as you mention above).

Speaking of Columbus, I watched the Sharks-Jackets game last night. Carter’s hatty got all the attention, but Derick Brassard caught my eye. I would love for the Caps to bag Carter but assuming they don’t, I think Brassard might be worth a look. He is younger, cheaper, a good playmaker, and can fly. His numbers aren’t that great and his +/- is pretty bad, but he is young. He might be MarJo lite (or vice versa) in that the gamble is on offensive upside, but I think would be an upgrade for a 3C and possibly a 2C. Any thoughts?

Say Hey, Patrick Wey
Wey has been a monster since his return from the severed tendon in his right foot.
BC was just 7-5 after he left after starting 5-1 with him anchoring the defense. Team had dropped from #1 to as low as #10 while he was out. since his return team has been 9-4-1 and won their last 7 in a row.
Hockey Futures just identified him as one of the top ten NHL prospects playing in college this year, no small accomplishment for a #4 draft pick, which was the lowest drafted player identified in the group.
My question to this group is, can Wey help the Capitols down the road?
It has been an awesome couple of Hockey weeks….Just got back from Charlotte for a tourney in which my sons winless team (due to division placement) won the tournament and played some awesome hockey on the weekend.
