Worthless.
I’m glad I missed the second period.
SOG is just play dumb and I don’t think it has anything to do with the amazing play of the Hurricanes.
Caps need a real coach, but it’s not happening this year.
I’d like to say I’ve given up, but that would be a lie. I still want to win some fucking games.

To add insult to injury- I just got the Caps text that the score is 4-0. Appreciate the reminder…

I agree, sellers
Sorry to say and I hoped that I was wrong but we need a change in personnel. Time to sell high and get a different mojo here. I’m OK with a partial rebuild.
Not sure if I’ve seen us play much worse than this. Brutal to watch. If GMGM needed to have his mind changed about buying or selling 7 days from now…this isn’t making him think anything but Sell.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.
We are only a few pieces away from a Stanley Cup, though.

Aside from Vokoun, Knube, Wides … Think anyone would bite on Semin? GMGM is pretty much getting to the point where the Caps’ situation with him needs to be addressed. I’ll be pissed if he walks away, come the offseason, without the Caps’ getting anything in return.

There’s a few playoff teams who could use Semin, especially as a rental. He’s still a skilled goalscorer, and probably could be dangerous in the right system.

Any more comments re: selling?
I like the core of our Caps but a change needs to be made and I would appreciate the comments of my more learned brethren of what changes could be made for our future?
I dont think you have to trade Semin. He’s been the only dangerous player out there lately. What can you possibly get back for him? He needs the right system. Ovechkin has been the much bigger concern, seeing how he is making way more money and earning exactly none of it and will continue to do so for a whole lot longer.
Semin is tradeable, and shouldn’t be here after this season. It makes sense to trade him. Ovie is untradeable, for a number of reasons.
Failure is always an option.
would you mind naming a few, please?? I hear this statement often to the point that it’s become cliche. I’d love to hear a sincere explanation…
I assume you mean reasons why Ovie is untradeable? His contract; he is the face of the franchise; and currently the team is built around him. I’m not saying those reasons are good ideas, but they’re the simple facts.
Failure is always an option.
he has 9 years left, yes? How many years did Jeff Carter have left?? It’s not impossible. Face of the franchise?? Gretzky?? The team has been built around him, yet the postseason success rate has been…
I just object to the absolutism here. Maybe there is a way. I just don’t think GMGM has ever considered it, that’s all.
1. The length of his contract.
2. The cap hit.
3. The commonly held view that he is uncoachable.
Shall I continue?
Dingos are involved. Best not to ask.
Seriously, the only kind of team that would sign up for Ovi’s contract is desperate for revenue/increased profile. The combined effects of points 1 through 3 is pretty overwhelmingly negative for a team picking him up.
Dingos are involved. Best not to ask.
fair enough. I was reading more into the sentiment that the Caps can’t trade away their face because of what they would lose. Your reasons seam much more sound to me; as is, what team could possibly would want him and at what cost?
Funny how a few years ago we were elated that we would never have to worry about OV leaving. Now (at least on some nights) we’re feeling that we’re saddled with him forever
You know what? I’m delighted we have Ovi forever. I hope they never trade him. He is the Caps, and the Caps are him.
What I hope is that he—and the Caps—figure it out. I never, ever want to see Ovi in a different sweater.

Well … true, but that was more towards the latter part of his career. Also that was a completely different era, what with the salary cap making it very difficult for dynasties to occur with the parity these days. Closest thing to a dynasty, if there ever was one, lately was/is Detroit.

I wonder, if 9 years later when the Caps had never advanced further than the 2nd round, would you still say that?
Seriously? How about you acknowledge that you have no idea what the future holds, and recognize that, as he changed over the past 5 years, so it is possible that he can change again in almost double that time.
However, since that doesn’t serve your particular narrative that he sucks for all time and evermore, that’s probably not too likely.
i’ve acknowledged that already by using the word IF. It was a hypothetical designed to test your faith
Dude. I’ve been a Redskins fan my whole life. The only way they managed to dent my loyalty was by the complete and utter tone-deafness of their owner. But even then, it is only dented, and not broken.
I have been loving actual losers for a really long time, and the Caps of the past several years don’t even come close to the heartache the Skins and O’s have brought me. In fact, they have been a bright spot in the midst of all my other sports-related pain. And most of that has come because of Ovi.
So, no. I don’t think he’s done by a long shot. And it would hurt me far more to see him skating for someone else than it would to keep my hope alive, even if it doesn’t come to fruition.
Honestly, the way hockey fans are so anxious for trades bothers the hell out of me. I have no stomach for it. I’ll hang around and see what happens at the deadline, and root for my team to do well up to and after that.
Dudette. I’ve been an O’s fan my whole life. Sister Sledge records make me physically ill.
Thank you for your honesty, though. I really do appreciate this post!! As for me, if trading OV somehow makes the Caps better then I would not only be happier than I am now, but I would also, very honestly, be happy for an OV resurrection no matter what team he plays for
Well. I don’t really know how to take this. You were baiting and borderline trolling with your other comments, but this one is kinda nice. So I don’t know whether to hate your guts or salute a fierce combatant.
I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, for now. On the basis of all we have suffered as O’s fans. ::clink::
if trading OV somehow makes the Caps better then I would not only be happier than I am now, but I would also, very honestly, be happy for an OV resurrection no matter what team he plays forI love watching him. I think he's great for the sport. And if a trade is what is needed to make both things happen, than I will take it and I will root for him...except when he plays Washington. I will always love the team MORE than any one player. But I will never abandon a player I love because of the team he plays on.

while you have faith that he can do better, in the present it is also entirely plausible that he may never again be what he once was. You’re the one who said he “sucks”. I never said that.
What I wouldn’t want for the next 9 years is a horribly overpaid captain (and perhaps uncoachable, as alex had mentioned) who collapses under the pressures of being a savior, and in turn, becomes a withdrawn, sullen, and perhaps selfish player. I don’t feel that I’m incorrect in stating that we’ve seen a glimpse of this already.
I feel that you are entirely incorrect in saying that. I have no idea what’s going on with him. But I am confident that he cares a hell of a lot more about what is causing him to play poorly than I do.
I didn’t say he sucks. I said that’s your representation.
Alex was quoting a meme regarding what makes him seemingly untradeable. None of us knows whether he is, in fact, “uncoachable.”
I return to my primary points. I don’t want Ovi traded. I have hope for this team. That’s it.
As for everything else, I have no interest in it, because neither of us has any clue what’s actually going on.

See, you have to judge the Bruce firing independent of the Hunter hire. One was a good personnel move, the other was not.
by Murshawursha on Feb 20, 2012 10:00 PM EST up reply actions
i think that’s wrong. GMGM said, very publicly, (as has nearly every other GM and paid analyst that I know of) you don’t fire a coach till you have already picked his replacement. GMGM also said, that he’d been talking about Hunter coaching the caps for years, and had several meetings with him since training camp when he “saw some things we didn’t like.” This was immediately followed by “…and then we went on a 7 & 0 run.”
Country Gentlemen's Pig Fertilizer Gazette

Doesn’t change the fact that firing Bruce was the right call, even if replacing him with hunter wasn’t.
by Murshawursha on Feb 20, 2012 10:07 PM EST up reply actions
then I was being unclear. because my argument is exactly that firing BB was wrong because the replacement choice was wrong. GMGM either couldn’t secure Hitchcock or didn’t consider him. And right from that moment there wasn’t an obviously good alternative.
And when the team thinks of itself as a stanley cup contender, than replacing the winningest coach in the NHL (in the past 4 years) with an OHL coach is irresponsible. If the only elusive coaching goal is reaching conference finals or better then hiring anybody without some evidence of that specific ability is wrong.
I can’t, nor would I enjoy trying to, defend Gabby’s playoff record. And I’m not confident enough in my knowledge of Hockey to say that a coaching change wasn’t needed to go farther or win a cup. But I am saying that unless you have reasonable expectation that the new coach will do better than the guy he’s replacing, then making the change is wrong.
Country Gentlemen's Pig Fertilizer Gazette
Dunny-on-the-World
Years of playoff losses that can at least partially be attributed to Bruce’s utter inability to change tactics on the fly. Lines that were never the same two games in a row. Bruce flat-out admitting he didn’t know how to teach mental fortitude. The fact that the team shit the bed just as many times under him as it has under Hunter. The fact that even the 7-game winning streak to start the season was full of signs that there were underlying problems that made winning like that unsustainable.
by Murshawursha on Feb 20, 2012 9:54 PM EST up reply actions
I’m pretty sure BB had the highest winning percentage of any coach in the league from the time he joined the caps till the time he left. That’s a metric.

this is pretty freaking hilarious. You can only hope that this is finally the game that wakes them up. Not likely tho.
I fully expect 2-4 out of these 6 “winnable” games.

I am actually going to keep watching. I know we cant win, but we cannot get shutout by the 15th place team’s back up goalie. I want to see us put one in, although I have no idea why I still care

I see one problem they keep doing over and over again…the Caps stop skating once they hit the blue line.
They are just following OV’s leadership. And they say he doesn’t lead.

So, after tonight’s loss, the Caps will be…in exactly the same place as they were before tonight’s loss.
Caps still play another game before Florida plays again. Should the Caps beat OTT on Wednesday, they would be tied with FLA, though FLA would have 2 games in hand.
What could suck is if Winnipeg beats Philly tomorrow and Toronto beats NJ tomorrow. Then, they would pull 3 points ahead of the Caps before the Ottawa game.
So, while the play tonight is alarming, the position still isn’t really as dire as all that. Is it likely the Caps magically pull it together, probably not. Is there massively less hope than there was yesterday? Also, probably not.

You cannot throw games away like we’re doing. Just because we’re not mathematically eliminated that does not make this performance acceptable. The other teams have to play each other, so someone WILL win. Scoreboard watching and wishing is for losers, which is sadly what we’re seemingly left to do. Count me out of that approach; too depressing and destined to fail. Sorry.

Your prerogative. I choose to actually enjoy watching my team and go into each game with hope. Because it’s sports. It’s where I choose to invest my entertainment time and money. But it actually has no bearing on my life in the long run.
So I’m going to keep hoping, wishing, and believing that they can do something, until there is no way possible that they can do anything anymore.

I would hope so…going to the movies is investing entertainment time & money. Rooting for a sports franchise is soooo much more to sooooo many people.
Not really sure what you’re meaning is. For many people I know, who toil in all levels of the movie business, the movies are soooooo much more than just entertainment.
However, the people who actually rely on the standings of hockey games for their living, such as the players, coaches, management, etc.? They’re the ones who have work to do. As a fan? All I can do is hope. Which is what I said above.
Well, it is in a sense, to me quite honestly. I can’t help it. Isn’t that what being a fanatic is about? … especially since I can remember with hockey being the first sport I was and still am passionate about. Still … an attempt to look at things with hope and some humor at least gets me through the rough times. I’m not even an optimist in general amongst those part of Caps’ nation.

Im pretty confident that even if I was in net for Carolina, and I don’t even know how to skate, that this game would still be tied. I could have stopped ten, I think. They would have shot them right to my chest anyways.

I admit I don’t know a ton about hockey, but I have a question for which I can’t find a very good answer.
Why would GMGM hire a coach whose system didn’t fit the players he spent several years acquiring?
I mean, when the Caps fired Bruce, it was because the team had given up on him, not because his system wasn’t any good. Heck, both his systems got the team into the playoffs in pretty good shape. I had assumed that the front office believed the players they had gotten over the past four years, and the ones they picked up in the offseason to push the team over that playoff hump, would make the squad that could contend for the Cup.
So what happened?
