Second Period Open Thread

Flash has a goal, Theo looks pretty good, Vokoun a little shaky... good stuff, if this was 2010. Another late goal has the Caps in a 1-0 hole after twenty, second period ahead.

Pick your comment/hyperbole:

  • These are two most important periods in the Capitals’ season.
  • These two periods will decide if we are buyers or sellers at the trade deadline.
  • Outscore the Cats over the next 40 or break up this team.
  • The season comes down to these two periods.
  • We’ll really see what this team is made of.
  • Can’t give up the next goal or season is over.
  • We have to score in the first five minutes to give ourselves a chance.
  • Hunter clearly can’t motivate this team. I mean, if you can’t get up for this game . . .
  • Late goals are a killer. The Caps are doomed. No focus.

Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

What should be called as an illegal pick (but isn’t) is stepping in front of a player who is attempting to guard another player in order to obstruct them.

Failure is always an option.

by timmyv38 on Feb 17, 2012 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

So interference of a sort, then?

It is supposed to be called as interference, according to the rules. Refs just generally let it go.

Thanks. Maybe I’ll remember next time it’s mentioned.

by gfcaps fan on Feb 17, 2012 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

Here is what the rulebook actually says – and it’s under “Interference”.

Pick: A "pick" is the action of a player or goalkeeper who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. A player who is aware of an impending hit, not deemed to be a legal "battle for the puck," may not be interfered with by a player delivering a "pick." A player delivering a "pick" is one who moves into an opponent’s path without initially having body position, thereby taking him out of the play. When this is done, an interference penalty shall be assessed.

Failure is always an option.

Flash had dropped back because Campbell rushed up with the play. By the time everyone had gotten in the zone, Mackan probably should have taken Campbell who was rushing up, and AO should cover Flash who was staying at the point/sneaking into the high slot.

If only that were the more important stat. Caps are weird. Get outshot badly and win, or outshoot badly and lose. It does not make sense. Why would an 8 foot tall wookie live on a planet with 2 foot tall ewoks? It does not make sense. If it doesn’t make sense, you must acquit.

We are only 4 points out of the 3 seed and should be getting our #1 Dman back, who has been out almost all of the season. And once the playoffs come around it really doesn’t matter what any of the stats say as Caps fans should be well aware of right now. I don’t say sell now but we are on a 4 game road trip and if we don’t start winning some on the road then I would say at the deadline it is time to sell. See if anyone is interested in Semin and if we aren’t going to resign Wideman do the same with him.

Only the Caps…

The NHL is so FUCKed up on this…thanks Shanny for putting out the memo to focus on this recently…asshole

Whoever the fuck wrote goalie interference into the rulebook needs to be fucking skinned alive and then dismembered, leaving their vital organs for last. IT is complete. Fucking. Bullshit and I’m sick and fuckign t ired of having goals waived off because of it. BULL. FUCKING. SHIT.

Golaie interference is good – when it’s called right. That was just a terrible call.

Failure is always an option.

by timmyv38 on Feb 17, 2012 9:06 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve never fucking seen it called right when the Caps are involved.

by Murshawursha on Feb 17, 2012 9:06 PM EST up reply actions

It gets called wrong more often then right around the league which is the #1 reason why it should be reviewable. So little goals in the NHL these days no good reason to not review something that could be a goal.

by icehammer97 on Feb 17, 2012 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

They only do that since they no giving the caps make up calls will never come back to hurt the home team.

NHL refs are to worst because they have no review system in place to evaluate them and make sure only the best get games.

by icehammer97 on Feb 17, 2012 9:05 PM EST reply actions

INEXCUSABLE.

but just the usualy fuckign bullshit by NHL refs.

Memories of Game 7 vs Montreal with Knuble creating traffic and a goal being disallowed.

Bright spot: if they are getting close enough to JT60 to get those kind of calls, they are getting close enough to rattle him.

Dingos are involved. Best not to ask.

by alex_k on Feb 17, 2012 9:06 PM EST reply actions

Who needs to get rattled when even the goals you let in are going to be washed off???
