Second Period Open Thread
Flash has a goal, Theo looks pretty good, Vokoun a little shaky... good stuff, if this was 2010. Another late goal has the Caps in a 1-0 hole after twenty, second period ahead.

I’m feeling pessimistic.

Pick your comment/hyperbole:
- These are two most important periods in the Capitals’ season.
- These two periods will decide if we are buyers or sellers at the trade deadline.
- Outscore the Cats over the next 40 or break up this team.
- The season comes down to these two periods.
- We’ll really see what this team is made of.
- Can’t give up the next goal or season is over.
- We have to score in the first five minutes to give ourselves a chance.
- Hunter clearly can’t motivate this team. I mean, if you can’t get up for this game . . .
- Late goals are a killer. The Caps are doomed. No focus.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

I know we’ve been through this before, but can someone explain an illegal pick?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
What should be called as an illegal pick (but isn’t) is stepping in front of a player who is attempting to guard another player in order to obstruct them.
Failure is always an option.
So interference of a sort, then?
And thanks for a real answer.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
It is supposed to be called as interference, according to the rules. Refs just generally let it go.
Failure is always an option.
Thanks. Maybe I’ll remember next time it’s mentioned.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Here is what the rulebook actually says – and it’s under “Interference”.
Pick: A "pick" is the action of a player or goalkeeper who checks an opponent who is not in possession of the puck and is unaware of the impending check/hit. A player who is aware of an impending hit, not deemed to be a legal "battle for the puck," may not be interfered with by a player delivering a "pick." A player delivering a "pick" is one who moves into an opponent’s path without initially having body position, thereby taking him out of the play. When this is done, an interference penalty shall be assessed.
Failure is always an option.

Flash had dropped back because Campbell rushed up with the play. By the time everyone had gotten in the zone, Mackan probably should have taken Campbell who was rushing up, and AO should cover Flash who was staying at the point/sneaking into the high slot.

Folks, JP, Rob, Neil, etc. have been posting Corsi/Fenwick for a month or so now. The caps are playing exactly to those stats. There should be no false expectation that this team is anything other than what the stats have shown over the past 3 months. We all love the Caps but they are what they are….. Sell GMGMG
So why are you watching?

If the whole story was told by stats ahead of time, I wouldn’t bother to watch the game. So, you know, stuff it! :)
That’s not nice. I love the Caps as much as you and will watch EVERY game until the end of the season. I want them to squeak into the playoffs, and maybe they will. The point is to think of the long run and not expect that every game is THE most important in Caps history.
Exactly. There was nothing un-nice about what I posted in response to your post, especially since my smiley was sincerely meant. I love everyone tonight. Especially the Caps. To me, every Caps game is the most important game in Caps history, because the Caps are playing right now. I choose, tonight, especially, to make that a positive experience. I’d love for you to be able to join me in that!

We are only 4 points out of the 3 seed and should be getting our #1 Dman back, who has been out almost all of the season. And once the playoffs come around it really doesn’t matter what any of the stats say as Caps fans should be well aware of right now. I don’t say sell now but we are on a 4 game road trip and if we don’t start winning some on the road then I would say at the deadline it is time to sell. See if anyone is interested in Semin and if we aren’t going to resign Wideman do the same with him.
all I want are some caps goals. GOALS. GOOOOOOOOOOOOALS.
