Been having a 4 day long facebook battle with a panthers fan who keeps saying Ovi sucks and someone else that Malkin is better than Ovechkin.

The Panthers fan is easy to handle. I just have to bring up which president was in office the last time the cats made the playoffs. Hint: He didn’t inhale.

I was ready to leave after SJ’s fifth goal. Only problem was that my husband had disappeared somewhere; it turned out he was on the damn phone with a damn client. Wait, you mean it’s not a 24/7 profession? We sure don’t get paid like it.

By the time he came back, Caps had scored twice. I figured once Schultz scored, they just might pull it out.

it’s a sad sad sad day in Capslandia when I stop believing. I want to believe sooooooo bad, but……I see a GM who is making some crazy decisions (really, calling up Recker?), a coach who can’t coach for shit in the NHL, a team that can barely score, a 1C sitting at home most nights because of an elbow to the head that should have resulted in a season-long suspension……..baseball season can’t start soon enough. At least then I know what I’m getting with the Nationals.

I was expecting him to shoot back with “Actually, she says you’re a narcissistic fuckwit!” Apparently I’ve not said anything to this brother, thank god, because all he said was “Um, okay, nice to meet you.” but for 10 seconds, my heart came to a screeching halt.

Please tell me if this makes any sense. We decide on a new camera for work. apparently Nikon has stopped making this camera, despite the excellent reviews. I say, “I know where I can get my hands on one if that’s what we want.” And I get told: “No, the warranty will be out of date.”

say WHA?

“It’s an old camera, there will hardly be any warranty on it.”

Oh. My. God. that’s not how warranties work. What the hell? Despite repeatedly trying to explain that, no, the warranty takes effect the day of purchase, even if they no longer manufacture that model, she refuses to listen to reason.

In today’s edition of you can’t make this shit up: Today is the 1 year anniversary of my old rental house catching fire. I got home after the game last night, and noticed a breaker was thrown. Flipped it on, and was greeted by shower of snaps, crackles, pops, and sparks from a power-strip behind my TV. After the panic subsided, I threw that damn thing in the trash, moved everything to a different socket, and proceeded to not really sleep at all. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Santorum Quest II: Michigan’s Revenge

Χαίρε στους νικητές

by Big Boutros on Feb 14, 2012 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

Kind of moot — no one has the money to compete with Romney. He wasn’t going to win Michigan*, so any of the ground Santorum gains will immediately be won back when Romney starts attacking Santorum.

*He had a big op-ed in NYT about the GM/Chrysler bailout and how it would destroy Michigan, so he’s rather hated there. Plus Santorum is from the rust belt, which plays well in Michigan.

I’d give the Santorum surge as the not-Romney another few weeks — by March 6th after Romney has outspent Santorum 30:1, Santorum will be a foot note.

I think everyone is sort of boned. After Florida, it went from “whoever has the most money wins 95% of the time” to “whoever has the most money, wins all the time” and while Obama probably won’t meet his $1bn goal, between SuperPACs and such he’ll be able to outspend 1.5 or 2:1 to whoever challenges. Barring something crazy like the Kochs throwing in a massive amount of money, of course. Since they threw their lot in with Cain and have seem hesitant to bet on anyone at the national level it looks like they’re just going to pay lipservice to whoever the GOP nominee is leaving the field somewhat less than level at the highest echelon with Soros being a major, major backet of the Democrats.

interesting.

our Washtenaw County neighbors Eastern Michigan have been breaking NCAA attendance rules for the past ten years to stay at the Division I-A level. You need a weekly minimum of 7,000 in paid attendance — or, using the language that Eastern exploits, 7,000 sold tickets. They sell most of the tickets to Pepsi and get maybe 2,000-2,500 actual butts in seats.

I usually went to 2 or 3 Eastern games a season because it was so cheap and the experience was so surreal. Watching a real, meaningful, competitive football game with no one else around you. Fun stuff

Not allowing O’Brien to go to Vanderbilt seems like the most spiteful thing that Edsall can do.

by Joran on Feb 14, 2012 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

The whole thing of issuing stipulations as part of letting players out of their scholarships is nothing new, almost every coach does it, but it’s pretty rare that they include a team that isn’t on their schedule.

That being said, it doesn’t bother me at all. I could care less about Vanderbilt or Franklin.

To me, it’s a small thing to do. It’s natural to stop someone from transferring to a rival school or a school on the schedule. Vanderbilt isn’t in the same conference so it doesn’t seem like it should adversely affect Maryland at all.

But this just smacks of spite and malice. O’Brien was a good soldier here, who said all the right things when he was benched. I’d like to think Maryland was better than this and I want to see O’Brien succeed, even if it couldn’t be here.

as you know I’m not a Terp but O’Brien is a very talented QB. I know why Edsall won’t let him go to Vanderbilt. It’s because James Franklin is an awesome coach and will turn O’Brien into 10 wins and a high draft choice thereby making Edsall look like the shitheaded ass he is.

Randy Edsall is arguably the worst person in college athletics today.

Χαίρε στους νικητές

by Big Boutros on Feb 14, 2012 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

I just don’t get all the Edsall hate. Why? I’m genuinely curious.

Everyone goes on about the 9-4 team that became 2-10, but that team was never that good in the first place. They never beat anyone that was good (and if you really want to stretch it, NC State was 23 when the Terps beat them). And I think the blame for the anemic performance of the offense and defense can be placed more on the shoulders of the since-departed coordinators (and injuries). And the YEAR BEFORE that they were 2-10, and Ralph barely survived.

That whole paragraph is about the season record and competition on the field.

Most people’s antipathy towards Edsall (mine included) has little, if anything, to do with the quality or scheme of football that his teams play.

Since arriving in College Park he’s proven himself to be a cruel and self-centered man who piles every available ounce of blame on the 18 year olds that committed to Maryland, not to Randy Edsall.

I was a varsity athlete at the University of Michigan from 2006 to 2010 and I saw what happens when a program legend is replaced by a vain, self-pitying jerk. I’m frustrated that it’s happening again.

Denying O’Brien’s transfer is one of his more innocuous moves.

Your vomit-inducing quote below about the Patriots is just one of several.

I’m not a fan of the stipulation that the school has to offer a graduate program that the player can’t get at their previous school. Stupid.

It’s dumb. Coaches are free to leave whenever they want to without penalty, but a player pretty much has to cross hell and highwater if he wants to change programs.

I can see why they do it from a practical sense (the chaos of faux-free agency would blow up the sport), but there has to be a happy medium somewhere.

Randy Edsall has managed to alienate everybody in College Park. He never took any responsibility for the failure of this year, instead pinning it on his players. He makes every excuse in the book for why the team failed but takes none on himself. His players genuinely seem to hate him and a whole lot of them have left so far. When he left Connecticut, he didn’t even bother to tell his players in person.

He seems completely in over his head and seems like a spiteful, self-absorbed person. For example, he says he watched a documentary on the Patriots and said to the media WITH A STRAIGHT FACE: “You know what, I must be doing something the right way because here is a guy, one of the most successful franchises in the NFL, basically saying the same things that I am saying and trying to instill here in this program.”

And the reason why this matters is because Maryland athletics needs the Terps to be good and raise money, otherwise they’ll be in even worse dire straits that they are now.

His players genuinely seem to hate him and a whole lot of them have left so far

There’s always turmoil when a program changes. Which is why most coaches get 4-5 years.

When he left Connecticut, he didn’t even bother to tell his players in person.

Which makes him at least like 85% of other coaches in America.

Bottom line is, I could care less about whether/if/is the guy a prick or not or if he treats his players like shit. He probably is and does. What I want is to win football games. If the guy’s a saint and his teams are terrible, that’s not different to me than if he’s a dick and his team sucks to me. It’s not a morality contest or a popularity contest. Everyone loved Ralph, but Ralph was 31-8 his first three years (with Mike Locksley’s kids), and he was 44-42 over his next seven. If anything, he should have been gone after the FIRST 2-10 season.

And you know what? I give the guy a ton of credit for actually changing shit around and not standing pat. Bradley and Crowton are gone. Locksley and his recruiting valve are back (there is no way we are even in the conversation for Stefon Diggs and Albert Reid and Zach Dancel if he’s not here). They brought in a new defensive coordinator from Houston. I can see progress in that regard.

Now, in a few years, if we’re still having this conversation, he’s probably got to go. But now? I’m more than willing to give the guy time. There’s literally nowhere to go but up.

Indeed. In the end, a football coach is going to be judged by his win/loss record. Being a good guy buys you some slack. Being an absolute prick and asshat buys you none.

Randy Edsall is 2-10 with a team that went 9-4 (yes with caveats etc, but a winning, bowl team). This is why he is hated. His demeanor with his players and the media does not give me warm fuzzies about his ability to turn it around.

He better start winning and he better start doing it soon before Maryland’s forced to make a move just to save whatever fans of the program are still left.

YLM is entitled to his opinion, of course.

I just don’t share it. In fact it’s the antithesis of my opinion. And worst of all I don’t think he’s going to get what he wants. I’ve seen what havoc an Edsall-style coach wreaks on an athletic department.

This is the best recruiting class they’ve had in a very long time. I know that doesn’t mean much now (see Weis, Charlie at Notre Dame), but it’s a pretty big ray of light for a program that hasn’t had many the last 10 years.

Alaeze has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, armed robbery, car theft and use of a hand gun in the commission of a violent crime, according to Baltimore County court records.

He was arrested Jan. 13 in connection with the Christmas Eve incident at an apartment complex. The charges against Alaeze carry sentences ranging from life for attempted murder to five years for auto theft.
Those charges will effectively slam the door on any kind of college career if he doesn’t end up behind bars.Considering his great physical promise, this is a tragic end to a string of sad tales in his public life.

After a much-hyped recruiting process, he signed with hometown Maryland. The move should’ve ensured a starting spot on the Terps’ defensive line from day one but instead he could not produce the grades and test scores to pass the NCAA clearinghouse.

So he sat for a year, attempting to get qualified but during that time he got into more trouble.
Maryland rescinded his scholarship offer in June 2006, partly due to Alaeze’s February 2006 arrest on five marijuana-related offenses. His enrollment at Maryland already had been delayed a year while he attempted to meet NCAA academic requirements.

I have two words of caution on this (with the caveat that I don’t really care) – Rich Rodriguez. He torched his way out of West Virginia, and then alienated a bunch of kids at Michigan. That team suddenly stunk, and he couldn’t right the ship, so he finally got fired. (Oh, and I don’t give a crap about Michigan, either.) Funny how that team was pretty good this year with his players and a new coach.

I agree that no one should need to be babied, but you should at least be a good boss (Spidey?).

But he said the Terps (1-2, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) are in transition from former coach Ralph Friedgen — who was dismissed in December with one year left on his contract — to a new staff with its own standards for player conduct.

“It takes time, especially if young people aren’t used to being held accountable. Or they’re not used to doing things correctly all the time,” Edsall said.

Go for it! I enjoy reading your rants.

by Joran on Feb 14, 2012 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

you’re the luck respondent!

I’ve been really hard at work to make a power point presentation for our executive director (my boss) to give to the mayor. My boss was so impressed with with what I had done, taking his somewhat scattered outline, and turning it into a clean, professional looking presentation—including figuring out how to add “clicks” for bullet points, something I’ve never done before but promised I could figure out—that he decided not to use the (very expensive) consultant he usually uses for these things. GO ME!

So today boss is going to give the presentation to the staff, to practice and also to get feedback. Trying to set up the bluetooth clicker was a disaster. No one knows how, instructions are god knows where, and people who can barely figure out how to turn on their computer (Howler Monkey, I’m looking at you) are trying to tell me what I’m doing wrong.

And then, if I may be so frank, they ruined my beautiful power point. Telling the boss he needs to add more text to each slide. Shooting down my recommendations for new slides and their placement. Saying, and I quote “It looks terrible without photos. Why would you make a power point without photos? That’s just dumb.”

ARUGH!

I kept my mouth shut, but I wanted to say “If you knew the first thing about power point, he would have asked you to do it.” (thanks, GMGM) So now I’m making these hideous “improvements” since the boss asked me to.

Frustrated frustrated frustrated. And I’ve not even touched on the Great Laptop Debacle of this afternoon.

Keep a copy of the original file for yourself as a portfolio in case you need it down the road.

I agree with others, take the positives, make the changes, but make sure you keep the original version. Might even want to show what one version of a slide looks like too crowded and the 2 slide version. I wouldn’t do that for all the places they suggested that kind of change, but show one set of information with the 2 modified versions (1 overcrowded slide and 2 slides.)

My guess is that the people in the room really thought they were helping. Also, when a boss like yours invites opinion, some people just can’t resist providing input, no matter how inane. I’d put some of the blame on him.

Also – keep in mind that if you put ten people in a room, you’ll get ten opinions on power point slides.

by RedBirdie on Feb 14, 2012 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn’t take it that he’s sending to the consultant as a bad thing either. It’s clear he trusts that person’s opinion based on past usage but the fact is he came to you first to do the work and then is having that person verify it. Nothing at all wrong with that. Hopefully the consultant has some constructive tweaks that you can use to improve yourself and you will continue to be the go to for this type of thing (assuming you want it.)

by Beakers Lab on Feb 14, 2012 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

It’s also possible that your boss is a little shaky about his own PP knowledge…that may be why he wants to send it to the consultant and asks for way too many opinions.

by Goaliemama on Feb 14, 2012 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

he can’t figure out PP to save his life, which is why he pays the consultant to do them :) She just happened to be too busy at the end of last week to do it, so it fell to me. At first I was just supposed to get the bullet points on the slides and she would take it from there.

I told him I could, if given a day to work on it, make a quality presentation for him (oh yeah, totally over-promised….and delivered!). Like I said, I think letting the consultant see it now is the best thing that could happen and she’ll strip some of these additions out. I went back over past ones she did before tackling this one, just to get an idea of what sort of design aesthetic the organization has been using.
