Hello from silicon valley!

Normally wouldn’t be excited about this game considering the way the season and the last week or so have gone, but I can actually watch this game on TV! Caps on TV is a rarity here, no NBCSN provided by my university… my roommate (long-time Sharks fan) and I are pumped. Let’s go Caps!

Warning: I started watching hockey in 2007. So, yeah.

NEWS: #Caps Recall Braden Holtby and Joel Rechlicz from Hershey – http://wshca.ps/wb2xd0

Maybe the Vokeswagon has a little more than just a cough? and Rechlicz. Ugh. Haven’t seen him play but all the reviews around here make me hop he doesn’t play. But excited to see if Holts gets some time.

by hockeyman33 on Feb 13, 2012 6:02 PM EST reply actions

It’s just the flu. Not surprising he needs more than 24 hours, even to back up.

Rechlicz, though, I don’t get. Also, Katie said that puts too many on the roster, so hello to LTIR Nicky (finally).

According to Vogs, Katie, and Whyno on twitter, the Caps don’t need to make another move because they get an exemption from the 23-man limit because of a goaltender sickness.

Warning: I started watching hockey in 2007. So, yeah.

by Laich Button on Feb 13, 2012 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

And yeah, I don’t get Rechlicz either… is Knuble scratched again???

Warning: I started watching hockey in 2007. So, yeah.

by Laich Button on Feb 13, 2012 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

yea, didn’t like him on the bench yesterday either – that’s how the entire team gets sick…and we can’t afford that.

by aaw6848 on Feb 13, 2012 6:31 PM EST up reply actions

any chance Neuvy might be getting traded off with a defenseman?

by Capital_Ram91 on Feb 13, 2012 6:12 PM EST up reply actions

Err… Very slim, because he and Holtby are the goaltenders are the future. Why trade them?

by Joran on Feb 13, 2012 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt it. Neuvy has trade value and he is more talented than his salary suggests, but his salary is terribly low. Replacing him would be hard, cost wise. I don’t think a deal in which he is packaged with a defenseman (I assume you were referring to Schultz) brings back a player who is valuable enough to make that trade to begin with. You won’t get a really good player out of that deal – meanwhile you’re out a goalie you held in high regard.

Always a chance but uh…where did that come from?

Well I didn’t get a chance to catch any interviews today so I hadn’t heard that Vokoun was still sick. So if Vokoun was healthy recalling a goalie who is currently struggling in the AHL and a defense man whose not really known for anything but the ability to efficiently handle a fist-a-cuffs wouldn’t make much sense

by Capital_Ram91 on Feb 13, 2012 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

I can make the unthinkable bigger by pointing out while everyone gasped at Vokoun’s small salary, people say Semin’s salary is similarly large. Fair bit of talent in that tidy package

Let’s recap, #Caps Neuvy this am told us he was in, Dale told us as late as 5:30 they weren’t sure if they would recall anyone,Holtby starts

I know if BB had done something like this people would be all over him for mismanaging goalies. Anyone think like me that Hunter has no faith in Neuvy and worry what that does to him long term?

by icehammer97 on Feb 13, 2012 7:07 PM EST reply actions

If it were Varly, I’d definitely worry tons — with Neuvy, I worry somewhat less as he seems to have lots of inner resources. Saying that, this kind of stuff is Laviolettian in it’s goalie cluelessness.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

by Davethecapsfan on Feb 13, 2012 7:09 PM EST up reply actions

With Neuvy, depends. If Hunter took him aside and said he didn’t want him starting both games in a tough back-to-back, I don’t think it will bother him. But Schultz…. yeah.

Failure is always an option.

I’m a hard ass on this one, and I don’t buy the self-confidence stuff. Life is tough, boys and girls. If you aren’t in the starting line-up, skate hard in practice and be a model player to get back in. That’s how the real life works. If you don’t have self-confidence in your hockey-playing ability, then go find another job.

Zero snark here.

No problem with that, except that Sarge and Neuvy seem to me the kind of players have worked pretty hard. Do you have the same standard for our quadrillionaire captain who shows up every other game or so?

by Wilderthing on Feb 13, 2012 7:13 PM EST up reply actions

Standards are going to be different. 1) both Neuvy and Schultz have played worse this year than they have in the past 2) Captain of the team and top scorer v. the backup goalie and at best 3rd pairing D man.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

by Davethecapsfan on Feb 13, 2012 7:15 PM EST up reply actions

Nope. Life is tough, and it’s not fair. Ovechkin gets a pass, as do people like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, LeBron James, Sidney Crosby, Albert Pujols and others.

You cannot compare Schultz and Neuvirth to Ovechkin. Ovechkin will not and should not ever be scratched. I’ve been consistent on that as well.

Sorry; I didn’t mean to imply that Ovi should be scratched. I agree; I would never suggest that. My point was that while I totally agree with you on that standard, whenever some of us posters would come down hard on Ovi this year, we got creamed. No biggie, though.

by Wilderthing on Feb 13, 2012 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

I can be hard on Ovi, but I just don’t think you ever scratch him. That’s why you can’t compare.

This is a…gotta bring Holtby up, let’s see what he’s got kind of situation. Neuvy’s a big boy…he’ll be fine. Hunter has to see what he has in Holts before the trade deadline and playoffs. Everyone chill.

by caps&skins on Feb 13, 2012 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

My issue is if Hunter told Neuvy he was playing then is starting Holtby. Which is what Neuvy it looks like since Neuvy said he was starting and Hunter said at 5:30 they weren’t even sure if they were calling up anyone. Players have to trust their coach and making moves like this hurts that. If it is just once then that won’t be bad but if this becomes something
Hunter does often it will kill the locker room.

JapersRink

Not buying this as Holtby being showcased – there’s plenty of NHL tape on him already. I think DH simply think BH70 gives them best chance.

I agree with this from our leader. Also with how good his NHL numbers have been hard for him to gain value tonight.

by icehammer97 on Feb 13, 2012 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

That might be the case, but I can’t see how anyone would think that. Holtby’s been having trouble winning in the AHL this season.

They know what he can do in the NHL and 1-2 games in NHL this year isn’t going to change much of anything.

A slow start in the beginning of the season, but he’s been pretty strong of late. Some wins were tough not because of Holtby, but the Bears had a lot of changes this season…not the same D talent as in years past….

by Goaliemama on Feb 13, 2012 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

There are 2 other things I can think of. Hunter might want to see Holtby in person, or he might think that Holtby’s competitiveness might end up with him having a hot game tonight. I’m still not agreeing with Hunter, but there are some reasons I can think of that make sense.

Lots of assumptions that they’re here for the Caps. Maybe they’re checking out Sharkbait?

by creasemonkey on Feb 13, 2012 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

By my count at least 3 teams there have 0 need for a goalie (Nash, STL, and VAN). Detroit has their goalie of the future so I don’t see them going after a guy like Holtby same with the Habs and Price. So that is at least 5 teams I don’t see having much interest if any in Holtby
