I tweeted it last night, but (strictly from a persona perspective) if the Drogba who showed up for these CAF showed up in the EPL I doubt he’d nearly be as disliked. Joking around with the Zambian keeper who held the ball in one moment, after he was consoling a Zambian defender who was in tears in being subbed off. Game was fairly blah save for those, but the kicks portion was amazing to watch.

Speaking of videogames, FF XIII-2 so far has been mostly level grinding to beat over-powered bosses. The story isn’t exactly gripping either. “Yeah, we’ll just say the end to the first game was a dream and have the characters time travel to change history around!”

"Money talks. I listen."

by apk3000 on Feb 13, 2012 8:48 AM EST up reply actions

Interesting. I saw 13-2 at GameStop yesterday and was wondering how it was. I pretty much maxed out my guy in Skyrim so I picked up Resistance 2 and went on a Chimera killing spree for a few hours.

I still haven’t played Skyrim yet. I’ve spent the time since Christmas playing both Batman games, and now I’m back into NHL 12.

13-2 is pretty much 13 gameplay-wise with a time travel story and not as linear. And I think you only have two main characters.

"Money talks. I listen."

by apk3000 on Feb 13, 2012 9:01 AM EST up reply actions

the FF series lost me when it became a movie with some fighting built in. I like the old school RPG’s. Dragon Warrior, Dragon Quest and the original FF’s. DQIX: Sentinel of the Starry Skies was a great throwback game.

by Beakers Lab on Feb 13, 2012 9:05 AM EST up reply actions

It doesn’t really bother me too much (although Namco’s Xenosaga trilogy took it to ridiculous heights), I mostly hate how Square keeps coming up with a new complicated battle system each time. And because it’s so complicated, you’re just as better off not bothering with trying to figuring it out and just level grind your way through.

"Money talks. I listen."

by apk3000 on Feb 13, 2012 9:15 AM EST up reply actions

yeah having to learn a complicated system each time I play a new game is not enjoyable to me.

by Beakers Lab on Feb 13, 2012 9:19 AM EST up reply actions

What did you think of the fighting system in 12? I enjoyed it, however that was the first FF game that I had played so I wasn’t used to the turn based fighting style.

by bathwithtoaster on Feb 13, 2012 9:33 AM EST up reply actions

12 is the gambit, pseudo real time one, right? It wasn’t too bad, although I rarely did much tinkering with the gambits. I think my main problem was with the pseudo RT part.

"Money talks. I listen."

by apk3000 on Feb 13, 2012 9:37 AM EST up reply actions

Yep, that’s the one. I think that is still the longest time that I’ve spend on a game. I put ~120 hrs into killing all the marks and finishing the missions by the time I was done

by bathwithtoaster on Feb 13, 2012 9:42 AM EST up reply actions

I hated the system for 12. If you want me to use your gambit system and program AI, give me all the controls (like in Dragon Age). Don’t make me grind up AI bits.

Also, I hated the level-up grid, because I had no idea which direction I was going. I like building up characters, but they hid what each bonus was, so I couldn’t really plan out what I was building towards.

The first FF I ever played was X and I loved the Sphere Grid.

by SethB on Feb 13, 2012 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

I was intrigued by that one, let me know how it is. not that I have the time to play it but still.

by Beakers Lab on Feb 13, 2012 9:56 AM EST up reply actions

I certainly will. With these people behind it, I expect good things:

Ken Rolston acts as the game’s executive designer, R. A. Salvatore created the game universe and lore, with Todd McFarlane working on the artwork, and Grant Kirkhope creating the musical score

You’re the boss, applesauce.

by SethB on Feb 13, 2012 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

That’s the series returning to it’s roots. The first few games had no story that was gripping, and it was level grinding to beat over-powered bosses. XIII was really the first to go for story before level grinding, and you still had an element of it, but it had no exploration. Still on the final bit (Level grinding to cap my characters just to do it).

what up kids

our intramural floor hockey season got off to a flying start last night, before our first game the captain of the other team asked the refs what the mercy rule was. we didn’t take too kindly to that and beat them 17-0 (via mercy rule, ironically)
I had my first ever career shutout between the pipes, although I didn’t really need to make a lot of difficult saves, they only had a few good scoring chances, one of which I did have a nice kick save on.

the official team name is Everyday I’m Byfuglien although I guess the guys in charge are a little more lax then we thought on offensive names, one team in our division’s name is Jerry’s Kids.

that aside, the one nice thing about this semester is that we’re all seniors and we’re playing a lot of freshmen and sophomores that we’re bigger and faster than, plus we know what we can get away with, the bounces in the gym, that kind of stuff. wonderful advantage.

thanks, yeah actually this year was the first year they tried to have girls involved because there aren’t enough girls to make their own league so the men’s league is now co-ed.
other key rules: no slapshots, no sticks in the crease (may seem dumb but as a goalie I love them, I have literally no padding and have been hit in the face, chest and man area more times than necessary.)
also swearing is a two minute penalty but they’re pretty lax on that.

I know lots of people seem genuinely distraught at Whitney Houston’s death, but I am not one of them and I really don’t care to hear her belting out “and I will always love YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU!” in the office. Put some fucking headphones on. Or close the fucking door to your office. Inconsiderate fucking jackass.

That’s more sad than Whitney passing, I think. I seriously did a double take, because I thought she died a long time ago. This is just the world we live in – a lot of people do terrible things to their bodies at young ages, and then die (relatively) young, and we’re surprised and saddened that they’re gone. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Whitney’s, and I’m not trying to be callous at all, because it’s sad when anyone passes away, but once they’re gone, they’re gone, and she was fortunate enough that she’ll live on through an aural means. Best of luck to Bobbi Christina, but this is another unfortunate situation where we put people into the echelon of their immortal because of their accomplishments, and then are shocked when we find out they just aren’t.

The visitation is this afternoon/evening. I am not good with funerals. I hate them and avoid them at all costs.

I will be spending most of today psyching myself up to go, because it’s absolutely the right thing. I’m dreading the open casket in particular. I’ve only been to one of those, and I could barely get myself into the room.

One of my favourite funeral stories I heard from my ex-girlfriend is as follows:

This brother and sister and their elderly father came in one day to arrange for their mother/wife’s funeral at the funeral home where my ex-gf worked. It went well. But as these things sometimes happen, the father died a month later and since the children were so impressed with the service held for their mother, they went back to the same funeral home to have a service for their father.

The children’s father was a big buyer of scratch tickets. So the brother and sister decided as part of the funeral that they would hand out scratch tickets to all attendees of the funeral at the door.

During the eulogy, the son said to the crowd, “As you will see, we have handed you all scratch tickets. We did this because as many of you know Dad loved his scratch tickets. If you win say $10 or $25 dollars, treat yourself and think of Dad. That would have made him happy. If you win a lot, please remember my sister and I are now orphans.”

Looking back, a good childhood friend of mine was killed in a car wreck back in ‘04. His mother insisted on an open casket, and they did a lot of work on him to make sure it happened. Not to gross people out, but the heat from the lamps to light up the casket did bad things to the reconstructed face. I don’t know if she would do it again.

I remember as a kid, I kinda knew what death was (My dad’s parents died when I was very young), but I didn’t really get the finality of death until I saw my great grandfather’s open casket when I was 13. They’d made me a pall bearer, and I just remember crying, bawling, for a man who the only interactions I had with were sitting and watching baseball together until someone found out I was in his room, and him handing me twenties as I left our family vacations to Illinois where he’d say to buy something for my mother on the ride home.

While they are very sad, I don’t know if I don’t approve. There’s something to the finality you get.

Looks like I’m not alone in this. Some people just function better or worse in these situations. One of my team told me that she kissed her grandmother good-bye in the casket. Just doesn’t bother her at all. Good for her, but it creeps me out.

same here. I don’t deal with death very well. my grandfather’s funeral was open casket; I wasn’t forewarned and had a complete meltdown. Couldn’t even go in the room. When Mr. B’s other great grandmother died (the one we all liked) she died at home, surrounded by everyone she loved—which is what she wanted. But, again, totally creeped me out. And in that bed she remained for 2 more hours, so everyone could say goodbye (she was to be cremated, so I get that, but, still). I stayed in a kitchen and wished desperately that there was some whiskey to get me through it. no such luck—Salvation Army christians are seriously strict teetotalers.

Heaven forbid if something like that happened to me, I don’t know what I would do. I mean, there’s a fine line between holding your baby that just passed away, and the act of physically carrying the child out of the hospital, driving it home, and bringing it to show your kids. I can understand what he was doing in the context of his and his wife’s (severe) Catholicism, but I just can’t fathom that type of thinking. And, I don’t want to say Santorum’s mentally unstable, but at the same time I’m fairly sure a person that would think that way probably shouldn’t be President.

Besides the fact that I don’t think I could ever bring home the corpse of my child and snuggle with it, it really burns me up that Santorum gets up there on his high horse and does his best to restrict options for women who are in similar situations: women whose lives are at risk to continue a pregnancy, or whose fetus has terrible defects and will have, at best, a few terribly painful hours to live. Rick Santorum can practice his religion as he sees fit for himself, but he needs to let the rest of us life our lives according to the principles we live by. And for some of us, that means making the painful decision to end a very wanted pregnancy because we wouldn’t want our child to suffer, and we do not want to run the very real risk of our own death.

If Rick Santorum wishes to practice an extremely conservative form of Catholicism, hey, go right ahead. All I ask is that I and everyone else in this country be allowed to make the decisions that we feel are best for ourselves. But that’s much too difficult a concept for ol’ Ricky to understand.

Nice. My wife is not a gamer, but she loves the Wii. That’ll never collect dust. The reason I ended up going with 360 over PS3 was because I preferred the controller. No kidding. If they made a PS3 controller that was the boat of the XBox one, I’d get a PS3.

My hands are fairly big too, but I have been holding a PS controller since the 90’s so I am just used to it. They do make 360 knock controllers for the PS3 now, even with the backwards d-pad and stick.

Given your background, I’m sure you know that it’s bad enough for some athletes when they retire and stop burning all the calories they were, but add in an injury resulting in retirement and it can be even more limiting and result in weight gain, etc.

Always a bit taken aback when I see Mark Tinordi these days, but then I put it in this context.

I think there were some pictures from when his son was drafted someone might be able to dig up, FYI.

Again, IIRC, he retired because of back and ankle injuries so those are going to impact one’s conditioning along with the general changes in activity due to retirement and one’s general body type.

sorry I didn’t get to answer sooner (work stuff); you’re right. It’s a huge (and I don’t mean that as a joke) problem for a lot of girls to transition from the highly restricted diet and very structured life of being a high level athlete to suddenly finding yourself turned loose in the candy aisle. Doesn’t help that frequently you go from stick thin with an unhealthy body fat percentage, so even 5 pounds looks like you’ve ballooned. You see almost as many eating disorders with the retired ones.

Oh, and I’m talking about even without eating disorders, etc., just the simple reality of the change in routine, etc., and if injury resulted in retirement even more limiting physical activity.

For those who weren’t following hockey or prospects or or other team’s players, if you go back further, his family situation has followed him throughout his career in terms of his reputation. including the time when he had his contract dispute with the Oilers, his hometown team/the team which drafted him.

Heir to a Canadian fortune gets drafted in the third round by the Oilers in 1999. Scores 33 goals in his first full season. Chooses not to re-sign with the Oilers as a restricted free agent in 2003. The Oilers opt to trade him to the Anaheim Ducks for “prospect Corey Perry and a first-round draft pick,” according to the LA Times, but GM Kevin Lowe wants Comrie to pay the Oilers $2.5 million as a condition for the trade.
Traded to the Philadelphia Flyers for a package that included a first-round pick, in a move that left everyone unhappy save for Comrie.

Amazing Videos of Earth at Night from Space

While you’re curled up comfy in your bed each night, the crew of the International Space Station is getting unrivaled views of our planet. For anyone wishing they could see what the astronauts see, here are recent videos of the Earth at night taken from space.

These spectacular videos feature city lights piercing the darkness like shining beacons announcing the extent of human habitation. But they also include incredible natural phenomena — such as ethereal auroras, shimmering lightning, and the silvery Milky Way — which surpass anything created by man.

These videos are actually compilations combining hundreds of still images in order to give a good approximation of what the ISS crew sees as they fly over the Earth. Most of them are taken in sequences of one frame per second, closely resembling the true speed of the station in orbit.

by apk3000 on Feb 13, 2012 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

Right, but vacuums still allow waves to travel through them, and if there’s something to have the wave bounce off of, wouldn’t it return to you? This crap is nearly impossible to test, though.

"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."

by Whiter Mage on Feb 13, 2012 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

Isn’t sound caused by pressure waves? There’s no medium for sound waves to propagate in space. Light is a special, weird case.

"Money talks. I listen."

by apk3000 on Feb 13, 2012 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

They need a medium since sound, well, makes sound by vibrating matter. Space is a near vacuum so there wouldn’t be an adequate amount of matter to allow sound to be heard.

Same thing goes for lasers — you can see them, sort of, on Earth depending on conditions. In space there would be absolutely no report of lasers be it light or sound.

If it start getting into stuff like the interstellar medium and solar wind though, you do have super sonic material…but all of that is due to the fact there are actual particles.

Where the “shocks” are labeled are where the materials go from supersonic to subsonic.

by RockinRed4Life on Feb 13, 2012 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

It’s still a near vacuum — the distance between matter is too great for sound to occur. It’s like hearing something underwater, then popping up above the surface and hearing it again. Except in space, you’re on the opposite end of water on the spectrum.

Didn’t Voyager or Pioneer recently cross the “boundary” without really detecting much? We’re talking something that’s really minimal here.

by RockinRed4Life on Feb 13, 2012 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, there are definitely particles out there but it only comes into play when you’re traveling at extremely fast speeds over long distances — the armoring on probes is nominal at best. It’s not until you start chasing asteroids or you’re leaving it in low Earth orbit that you need Whipple shields or other armoring. There’s just not that much floating around to be concerned about in unmanned probes. Plus radiation shielding tends to be sufficient for them anyway.

Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:

by sydtron on Feb 13, 2012 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

Also, on the note of lasers and space: the ultimate weapon in space would be sand. Assuming you’re capable of space flight, you’re capable of getting a bunch of sand up as close to near-relativistic speeds. Kind of like how anti-aircraft missiles work now — they explode just before impacting and allow for kinetic energy kills. Except in space, you’d just blow it up even earlier to create a cloud of sand that would rip apart damn near anything.

Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:
