Gormley is a piece of work.
By making Knuble a healthy scratch on Thursday night, coach Dale Hunter ran the risk of not only alienating his veteran winger, but dividing his locker room. And that could mean a quick deal is in the works for Knuble, who is on a one-year, $2 million deal.
Um, OK. It could just as easily not be the case, but whatever.
But if the Capitals packaged Knuble in a trade that included defenseman Jeff Schultz and a draft pick or a prospect, could they get what they really need – a gritty second-line forward like Tampa’s Dominic Moore or Carolina’s Tuomo Ruutu or maybe the Islanders’ P.A. Parenteau, each of whom are expected to be available as rentals?
Not even sure where to begin here. Ruutu is staying put, no? Schultz and a pick for Dom Moore, huh? And what the hell, we’ll throw in Knuble. For a rental.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
The worst part is PHT picking that up and running it with the “Mike Knuble’s days in Washington may be numbered” headline based solely off of Gormley’s article. horrible

PHT and CSN are both part of the NBC empire, so that’s why you see a lot of that linked.

He wouldn’t be a terrible acquisition, but aside from the absurdity of the proposed price of getting him, Moore is also not a good 2C.

Yeah, he’d be an upgrade on some of our depth but that’s not this team’s problem.
Please, call me F&B.
The thing about Moore is that I think he can play 2C, 3C, and 4C. Now obviously he’s mostly a 3C (and Laich is set in that situation), but he plays smart enough hockey, has been through the playoffs many times, and has been traded so many times that he can adjust to new teammates well enough.
The Caps have tried those “maybe he’s a 2C but he should be a 3C” players on the 2nd line for a while now. Moore doesn’t provide any improvement on the 2C over what they have been doing, so he doesn’t solve that problem.

Regarding the bad taste in beer comment – you realize that’s probably outside the control of the attendees at a sponsored event, right? Either the location is controlling the spirits served, or there could be a corporate sponsor involved. You’re not there for the food and drink, and every event like this I’ve ever been at, it’s been a good thing that expectations were low.

Is there a run down of the dads making the trip to NYC? I have seen or heard a mention of Ovi’s dad, Backstrom’s dad, Brooks’ dad, Aucoin’s dad, Brouwer’s father-in-law, and Ward’s brother making the trip this year. The Swedes beat the Russians 4-1 in the second match of the “Sweden Games” round of the Euro Hockey Tour.

The short version is that the guy with the fourth-line upside completely owned the the future star of the franchise. Sjöa’s line with Calle Järnkrok and Jakob Silfverberg was matched against Kuznatsov’s line a lot and they did a really good job of keeping him hemmed in the Russian D zone.
In reference to the National Hockey Card Day, does anyone know any shops in the area participating? Roenick’s article is hardly analysis. Why exactly does every team need a singular identity? That’s a stupid and antiquated notion, I think. Can anyone honestly pin an identity on every one of the 30 teams? I can think of a few…Detroit: puck possession team, Boston: hard forechecking/cycling team, the New York Rangers: consistently bailed out by great goaltending, Vancouver: good at everything, Florida: spare parts. Am I forgetting anything?
To me it’s the pundits clamoring for the run’n’gun 09-10 Caps, the same ones who slammed them for being run’n’gun.
Also, Brooks’ girlfriend…wow, go Brooks.

Agrre on the offensive depth issue as well. The addition of Richards combined with Anisimov, Stepan, and Hagelin’s play has made them tougher to defend. Scary part is how young they are.

Oh it wasn’t meant to give the Rangers less credit… it was to illustrate the point that no one team really has one defining identity or characteristic. They have always been great defensively…that said they wouldn’t be at the top of the standings without Henrik.

Definitely. The first month or so their skaters were awful. But since then, and especially since Mitchell and Hagelin got called up, they’ve been well above average in that respect, and Lundqvist makes them an elite team.

I recently came into possession of a handful of cards from 1975 and 1976. One of them is particularly odd and I’m wondering if any Hockeycard-o-philes can provide an explanation. The player is identified as Pierre Larouche and his team as the Penguins. The accompanying photo, however, seems to feature someone in a Caps uni (the name could be “Larouche” but is hard to make out) playing against what appear to be players in the blue Pens sweaters. It is a 1975 Topps card and lists his one year on the reverse as playing for Pittsburgh. Apologies if this is heading down “Save this for some other site” Street.

Interesting Article on Hunter at nhl.com
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=616264
That shows up in how they deal with the media, but the players also confirmed it as well. Boudreau’s heart-on-the-sleeve passion could be infectious, but there may have been times — especially during a long playoff series — where some of the Capitals might have responded better to a more even-keeled approach.
“Bruce would come into the dressing room and talk for 5-to-10 minutes to tell us what he is thinking and show us graphs and break down the stats,” Washington defenseman Karl Alzner said. “Dale’s not really that type of guy. It is pretty cut and dry. It is a simple game. He shows you what you did wrong on video and he quickly explains it. It is, ‘You should have stayed with the guy here,’ and, ‘You should have chipped the puck out,’ and, ‘There is no play here, so dump it.’ That’s all he says, and you’ve got to figure it out. He knows we should all be smart enough to figure it out and that’s what we’ve done wrong and fix it. He just says it like it is and you’ve got to figure it out, change it and (if) you don’t … he changes it for you.”
I don’t understand how “figure it out” jives with being a teacher. They seem antithetical to me. Also, J.P. has talked a lot about how BB’s emotional style tended to create panic, and I think that may be corroborated in the article.
Please, call me F&B.
It is. Corey’s perspective makes Hunter seem like my type of coach and, honestly, the way I used to coach. There are good wins and bad wins. There are good losses and bad losses. A coach has to be even keeled all the time and to hold the team responsible for their actions. A coach has to respect that these are intelligent young men who understand their job.
I like it.

I think he deserves more time for sure, you’ve been beating that drum since before Hunter was even hired and it’s hard to disagree given all the context. But the quotes from Knuble about where the shots are going to come from when they play their normal score-tied system are troubling.

That was truly my hangup about Hunter as coach — no experience coaching a professional team at any level, not even ECHL or AHL. I recall how many fans wondered if Boudreau had had the proper background to coach an NHL team being as his experience was coaching AHL teams. Hunter’s experience sounded like less.
Aside from Hunter being a former star Caps player as an attraction, I’m sure one of the things they considered was that he’s a very opposite personality of Boudreau and the management figures they need someone different than Bruce.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
If GMGM expected massive improvement off the cuff with the selection of this coach then it was definitely a very poor choice.
If he expected more accountability and more responsibility, then he would/should have expected more individual f’ups by players as the direct immediate result. With the long term result being what i think he was looking for: A more solid playoff team/consistency.
I expect continued systems/individual improvement, so to me the health of the roster is now the primary concern, regardless of the coach. IMO
I used to be a hockey player, but then I took an arrow in the knee
I should add, that if GMGM thought they had just stopped listening to Bruce,
if he thought that there were personality issues,
if he decided Bruce was just too emo (Emo Bruce.jpg?)
then he would have gotten a run-and-gun replacement.
Regardless of the individual selected/his experience/whether he pans out or not, GM went out and got the System he thought the Caps needed. Over the run-and-gun.
I’d be a fool to say this or any system is perfect tho.
I used to be a hockey player, but then I took an arrow in the knee
There are interesting quotes throughout the piece.
“I don’t think our record has been crazy since he’s been here, but it has been better,” said defenseman John Carlson, one of two Capitals to have played for Hunter in London. “The way we feel about how we’re playing sometimes is way better. We’ve had some major lapses, and some lulls, but I think everyone believes more in this system and day-by-day is getting more used to it.”
I think it’s too early to tell.
One thing that I think is under-discussed is Hunter’s learning curve. We spend plenty of time talking about whether or not the team has his system figured out, that it’s going to take some time, etc., but we very rarely mention the learning curve for a CHL coach transitioning to the NHL. I’m sure that’s part of what was underlying the trepidation about the hire, initially, but it’s not as if he got here, threw down his game plan and is done. He has to learn what works and what doesn’t, borrow from what he sees elsewhere, etc.
To compare him to Ken Hitchcock or Bruce Boudreau is unfair. Those guys have tons of recent, applicable NHL experience. Hunter has none. So you’ve got to give him time (not to mention an off-/pre-season and a chance to get “his kind of players,” whatever that means).
(On a sidenote, this is one of the reasons I was opposed to the hire initially – because I’m impatient and favored a quick fix. Given this team’s current roster and salary commitments now and on the horizon, I don’t think that was irrational.)

That brings up something I personally find interesting.
Lets pretend we’re GMGM. We know we want a system similar to the one Dale Hunter gives us.
At the time Dale Hunter was hired.
I am genuinely curious: what were his options, on the day Dale was hired?
Because I think a lot of us would have preferred a guy w/ NHL experience. And successful experience at that.
