So, flukiness of the loss aside, I was not happy that after Semin’s quick strike, the Caps’ PP proceeded to get trapped in their own zone for over a minute. That was terrible looking.

The way I look at it, losing the point last night kinda evens up for getting that point in New Jersey a few monfs ago the Caps had no business getting.

He only scores with gold-plated pucks.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Actually, solid gold wouldn’t even do it. A solid gold hockey puck (~7 cubic inches) made of gold would weigh a little under 5 pounds (~78 oz). At the current spot price of gold, the puck would be worth ~$136,000. He could score ~ 57 goals worth before the value of those solid gold pucks would exceed his salary.
Was hoping to see Hendy in the shootout.

He appears to be making smart decisions when it comes to hitting. He’s also very good at avoiding (so far) being hit. Maybe he can show Green a thing or two.
I also get the sense that the kid wants to show his offensive skills but he’s disciplined enough to be a rookie defenseman first and learn the job.

I thought there were a lot more bright spots than dark ones this game. Chimera had a quality chance or two as did Ovechkin, Aucoin, and Ward. MarJo may have buried the insurance goal if he hadn’t been tripped. I felt like that non call in particular changed the pace of the game in the favor of the Jets. Not an excuse by any means, “Chance favors the prepared mind”, but I can’t help but think losing out on that chance and the resulting PPG as well as the call that could have (should have?) been ignored on Laich and this is a much different conversation. Can’t help but put a little bit of that loss on the refs, no?

I agree. For the first time under this regime, I feel like we’ve strung together some better games as far as “tilting the ice” more to our advantage. We seem to be getting pinned less often in our own zone, and our scoring chances have been coming with more consistency.
I was definitely pissed leaving the game last night because we left a much needed point on the table, however, I’m feeling a little more optimistic that we can sustain a high level of pressure and grind out wins down the stretch. The next few weeks are abviously going to be very telling as to whether that optimism continues.
And yet they still are trying to play coin flip games. Sometimes the coin just won’t oblige.

Individual game results will always be a coin flip. Good goalie work, some benevolence from the posts and a couple of crazy bounces will always allow you to take points out of a game in which you do not play well.
It’s just a matter of how heavily you’re able to weight the coin in your favor. The Caps weighted the coin to my satisfaction last night.

Exactly. You had posed the question a few weeks back (before the Carolina game we lost 3-0 I believe), and asked if we’d rather see a quality performance (ie, the graph above) and perhaps a tought loss, or two points with little pressure/dominance. At this stage, clearly points are at a premium, however, more performances like last night and I think the points will flow.
Heh. While I was figuring out how to find that graph, you went and posted it.
Anyway, that’s pretty much domination, and I highly doubt we’ll see a broken-stick penalty leading to a 6 – 3 and then a 90-foot goal in the next decade.
Also, anecdotally: the breakout was generally much crisper, there was, shockingly, an effective forecheck, and while I haven’t seen the chance data from Neil I feel sure the Caps were well in front in that metric.
I noted in the recap, but if the Caps play like this down the stretch, they will take the SED going away.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
One last thought on the broken stick penalty – my gut tells me that if Laich just flubs the puck back to the shooter with his broken twig rather than feeding a somehow perfect pass to Brouwer for what would’ve been an easy nail-in-the-coffin empty netter, it goes uncalled. But that’s neither here nor there.

Agreed, which is why the ref probably would’ve given him the benefit of the doubt if the result wasn’t as impactful. He had no choice but to call it.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
And if BL21 does realize he’s got a busted stick, it’s a relatively simple play to kick the puck over to Brouwer for the same result, or at least an easy clear. Which they’ve blown umpteen easy clears this year, but the way last night was going I tend to think Brouwer executes it.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Agreed. I’m sure it pains the ref to make that call, it’s a ticky tack a-hole kind of penalty call. When Laich made the pass to Brouwer, he put the Ref in a terrible situation. If he looks past the broken stick, he basically lets Brouwer sew up the win. If he calls it, he sets up the 6 on 3 for the Jets, but the Caps still had a safe looking 2 goal lead. In that situation, I think making the call was the right decision, even though it didn’t pan out well for our boys.
I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.

I was really happy with how they played… until the final few minutes…
The PPGs were excellent. Defense was good all game.
Semin’s line was was smoking. Imagine if that was our 2nd line where it belongs and it played like that all the time. Or at least, most of the time. Matty P as legit 2C (when paired with two good wingers)
hmmm
"By far the worst performers on the (R*dskins) are in the front office." – Sally Jenkins
I’m not quite there with you on Perreault. He was an absolute disaster in his own zone last night (and on many nights). Need a bit more defensive conscience to be a legit 2C, for my money, regardless of what he might be capable of at the other end.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
True. Let me rephrase, he’s not ideal 2C, but if they can get that kind of offensive production from the second line consistently, then 2C isn’t the massive urgent need it sometimes seems like.
The defensive liability aspect would have to be accounted for, and this plan also assumes MP continues to be hot in the offensive end… but a fellow with an irrational crush on MP can dream, can’t he?
Mostly I think the response to my observation is earth shattering:
good sasha means good 2nd line.
bad sasha means bad 2nd line.
"By far the worst performers on the (R*dskins) are in the front office." – Sally Jenkins
Perreault is a less of a liability in his own zone than Johansson in my opinion. Perreault makes much better outlet passes, but his decision making can be too slow…which led that grievously bad turnover in the 3rd. As another Perreault-homer I think most certainly has the potential to be a legit 2C, I think he needs more top-line time to determine if he’s at that point right now.

NEW YORK — Nobody is saying it, but it seems clear Mattias Ohlund will not play this season.
The Lightning defenseman has not played a regular-season game because of two bum knees, is not skating, and GM Steve Yzerman acknowÂledged Thursday there is no timetable for him to do so.
*}
Ohlund, 35, who has four years left on a seven-year, $25.25 million contract, had arthroscopic surgery on both knees over the summer to clean out what the team called “loose bodies.” He has not skated since mid November and declined to comment.
The injury sucks, and you feel bad for the guy, but holy mother of… that has to be in the running for one of the worst contracts of the last five years. Even if Ohlund was healthy, he was slow and on the wrong side of thirty. Who gives him that kind of term?
Oh, right. Brian Lawton.
Reporter: "What’s your Mom’s birthday?"
Tortorella: "I have no idea."
Yeah that sucks for Ohlund. I am guessing they were expecting him to mentor Hedman. Doesn’t excuse the outrageousness of the contract though.

Terrible deal, but it’s not a 35+, so if he retires it goes away. Or they can just stash him on LTIR for the next millennium.
It’s actually fairly cheap to buy him out:

NCAA men’s hockey on National TV tonight depending on what carrier/sports channel package you have, including 3 games with Caps prospects:
Boston College/Vermont (NBC sports 7:30 eastern) – BC: Patrick Wey #6; plus Walton calling the game (with Milbury)
Minnesota/Denver (NBC sports 7:30 mountain): Minnesota: Travis Boyd #22 (Nick Larson, injured)
North Dakota/University Minnesota Duluth (CBS 7:35 central): UMD: Caleb Herbert #21
-also one of the touted NCAA undrafted players, JT Brown plays for UMD
Michigan/Michigan State (BTN 7:05 eastern)
no love for Jim Johnson’s son? :)

Hey, I’ve mentioned him before and he doesn’t play every game (he did play 1 game last weekend in Alaska,) but yes, Derik Johnson, freshman D for UMD, #4.
Also, expected lines for UMD:
Seidel – Connolly – Basaraba
Herbert – Oleksuk – Brown
Flaherty – Hendrickson – Grun
DeLisle – Tardy – Krause
Other prospects playing tonight, too, just thought I’d note the TV games.
LOL. I read “Oleksuk” and thought you were trolling Oleksiak, who does deserve to be trolled.

I much prefer that attitude over the Bruce attitude of punching the glass behind the bench and getting all worked up over it.
This team needs a calm presence on the bench.
This is a very simple game. You pass the puck, you receive the puck, you shoot the puck. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains. Think about that for a while.

Tough, tough loss but, as discussed, it looks like the Caps have some spunk back which is great news. Perhaps a shout-out is due to the current top 6 d-corps. Penalties (and accidental puck deflections and shoves) aside, I don’t think there were any major defensive breakdowns as there have been in many recent games. Orlov’s eye-popping development , 74’s regression ‘back to’ his higher level of play, and Sarge’s stability may be rounding out what should be a decent top 6 for the playoff run.
Man I’ve enjoyed Sarge over the past few games.

Stumbled onto this pic today… Greenie with a couple members of the NOVA Cool Cats Special Hockey Team. Arlington Fire hosted the Fairfax Fire in a charity game to benefit the Cool Cats. The event raised a couple thousand dollars for the Cool Cats, which is awesome, because they pretty much embody everything that is right about hockey.

Read about how Savard is essentially crippled in day-to-day life because of concussions or Pronger’s wife saying “Chris has good days and bad days”
The NHL needs to get serious about concussions and potentially tie suspensions to the length the player is on the IR somehow.

I think we have to stop calling the injuries like Savard and Pronger’s concussions and admit what they really are: traumatic brain injuries. I’ve had concussions. I had one that knocked be out stone cold for who knows how long and still have this chunk of time missing from my memory. But I’m (largely, although sometimes that’s probably up for debate) a fully functioning adult capable of leading a normal life. These guys can’t even watch TV.

Entirely true: the Overton Window, if you will, needs to shift so that it’s not about getting your bell rung and about having a debilitating injury for the rest of your life that causes bright lights to cause nausea and to slowly lose your memory.

Since the All-Star break the Caps played 6 games. The record is 2-2-2 for 6 pts out of a possible 12. They have the same record at home as on the road.
28 games remain on the schedule. 13 home and 15 away. 56 possible points.
Caps need 32 more points to make the 93 point cutoff for the playoffs.
8 before the trade deadline. 2 home and 6 away. 16 possible points.
If current trend continues the Caps will pick up 8 pts before the deadlline. That will give them 69 pts total with 20 games remaining.
In those last 20 games the Caps need to get 24 of the 40 available points. Good news is that there are 11 home games. Bad news is 10 of those 20 are against current playoff bound teams. Half of the remaining games are against playoff teams.
The Panthers have 29 games to go, and a lighter schedule facing only 12 playoff teams and 15 games at home. But they have been very lucky this year (-16 goal differential) and have benefited greatly from the loser point. Their luck will run out, but the Caps may not catch them.
The Caps are looking up at OTT (63 pts) and TOR (62). TOR has been playing well and seems to be in good shape. OTT, not so much. They have 25 games left (3 fewer than the Caps) and 12 are against playoff teams and 12 on the road. They haven’t played well of late (3-6-1) and their goaltending is bad (combined .895 SV%/3.14 GAA). There is almost no chance that they don’t drop out of playoff contention and open up the 8th spot for the Caps.
I don’t think the Rangers should be too comfortable. Their scoring is pretty anemic – only 4 skaters are in double digits for goals. If King Henry goes down – so do the Rags. His SV% is one of the top in the league – and has actually faced more shots in fewer games than TVokoun.
We may talk about the lack of offense from the Caps, but they’re actually doing pretty well in terms of balance. The Caps have 8 players in double digits for goals (and MP is one away). More than the Bruins and Devils (7 each), more than the Pens and Sens (6 each), and the Leafs and Panthers (5 each). The only team with more is the Flyers with 9.
Nick appears to be getting better – at the game last night and going to Casino Night as well – and he needs to hurry back. The Caps miss him. It was only last night that Ovi passed him in total points.
Gormley
But if the Capitals packaged Knuble in a trade that included defenseman Jeff Schultz and a draft pick or a prospect, could they get what they really need – a gritty second-line forward like Tampa’s Dominic Moore or Carolina’s Tuomo Ruutu or maybe the Islanders’ P.A. Parenteau, each of whom are expected to be available as rentals?
How about Ducks veteran Jason Blake, another UFA-to-be? Is there any gas left in his 38-year-old tank?
