I had tuned away from the game until I knew a 4v4 was on. Smelled a goal coming.

And given that the Pens/Toronto and Ranger/Buffalo games are in the third period and have less goals than us makes it look even worse. And BTW, Vanek’s out injured since he got hurt last game.

Neuvy has been solid aside from 1 very weak goal, and Laich had a beauty of a goal.

For the quick and dirty wrap up, no goals during Period 1. Neuvy was looking great. Panthers scored 1 early in period 2. Laich scored the Caps goal near the tail end of a 4 on 4.

How so? Pretty much bodychecked that puck in through Neuvy… thats not legal

by feeya7 on Feb 1, 2012 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

By the time he makes contact with our goalie, the puck is falling forward into the net past him. The contact, had it prevented Neuvy from having a legit save opportunity, should have gotten us the faceoff. But, it doesn’t, and the contact with the puck is not illegal.

The NHL has GOT to make goalie interference reviewable. There seems to be a wrong call on this every night in the NHL and there is no good reason why they can’t just review it and get it right which is the most important.

by icehammer97 on Feb 1, 2012 10:13 PM EST reply actions

I’m not sure why it’s not reviewable…
But that being said that call would have been the same even if they could review it.

Not so sure the rule is just that you cannot create the contact and make the goalie unable to attempt the save and while the puck was already behind Neuvy there was clearly time for him to attempt to make the save as the puck was not moving very quickly.

by icehammer97 on Feb 1, 2012 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

Right so just his position ie being in the crease doesn’t automaticly make it a no goal but being on top of the goalie should. A very similar play by Hendricks got us 2 minutes earlier.

Not in a way that would have prevented the goal, nope.

The ref cannot assume the goalie would not have been able to find the puck since it was connected to the player and having the player on top of him clearly prevented him from moving at all to attempt a save. If going through the goalie like that isn’t goalie interference I am not sure what is. If that is allowed guys should just start hitting the goalie every time the puck goes into the air in front because running over the goalie gives them a goal. You allow plays like that to be good goals you are going to get more goalies run and hurt.

by icehammer97 on Feb 1, 2012 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

If going through the goalie like that isn’t goalie interference I am not sure what is.

Last year… Winter Classic… Ovi holding Fleury behind the goal, directly resulting in him not being able to save a shot.

Neuvy didn’t have a shot at that save.

Go USA, Braves, BU Terriers, Irish, Caps, Skins, NU Cats, Wizards, DC United, Washington Freedom

by SuperNewb on Feb 1, 2012 10:34 PM EST up reply actions

If you read the rule it never actually says that the goalie has to have had an opportunity to make the save if not for the player. The rule even says “The overriding rationale of this rule is that a goalkeeper should have the ability to move freely within his goal crease without being hindered by the actions of an attacking player. If an attacking player enters the goal crease and, by his actions, impairs the goalkeeper’s ability to defend his goal, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed.” Neuvy clearly didn’t have the ability to move because of the attacking player and was impaired in his ability to defend the goal and the goal was scored. No where in the rule does it ever say anything about the goalie having to have a chance at stopping it without the player. By the rule as written this was clearly goalie interference.

by icehammer97 on Feb 1, 2012 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

All it does say is “Incidental contact with a goalkeeper will be permitted, and resulting goals allowed, when such contact is initiated outside of the goal crease, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact. The rule will be enforced exclusively in accordance with the on-ice judgment of the Referee(s), and not by means of video replay or review.” But there was never any effort by Weiss to avoid Neuvy at all.

by icehammer97 on Feb 1, 2012 10:41 PM EST up reply actions

Rules also say that a slash is a slash even if there’s only a slashing motion and no contact… but tell me how often you see a slash called on purpose because it was only a motion.

The reason even bias guys like Joe B and Craig barely mentioned goalie interference on this call is because it would have been a ridiculous call. I’m done with this.

by timmyv38 on Feb 1, 2012 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

Go back and look at that play again. The pass was to MOJO he had it, lost it then just poked it to back to no one. If Carlson had clue that MOJO was going to do that maybe but when he has the puck Carlson has to back off so that we don’t have two guys touching each other. MOJO was the one that turned the puck over and left Carlson hanging. Just because the puck was in his direction does not mean he is the one responsible for the goal. That goal was 100% caused by Hammer’s bad pass and MOJO making a horrible play after he did get the puck.

A rough loss against a team you don’t want to lose any games to if you want to go to the playoffs. Hopefully the return of the captain gives the team a little spark.

But, since you guys need some cheering up, here’s a smiling sandwich.

I bet the 6th place team in the conference will be drooling at their first round matchup. But, if things happen like they did in baseball and football, the least likely playoff team is the one who got to the big dance at the end. Cardinals as World Champs. And I think the Giants will beat the Patriots. Mark my words, they will.
