So, would Columbia be considered part of the “Greater Washington DC metro area” for the purposes of redeeming McDonald’s coupons?

Dan Borislow wasn’t the nicest person in the world to begin with, but the fact that he was so petty enough to be willing to force WPS to suspend operations is frustrating and sad. So now the players are starting to drop dimes on just how nice of a boss Dan was.

Tasha Kai is supposedly putting something out today that discusses WPS and the National Team a little more (which might address how/why Abby Wambach swears by Borislow). We’ll see how many more folks will come out and tell the tales.

This evening I got asked to be a panelist at Mason’s College of Science career night. They figure that my young age, the fact I have worked in my field both before and after graduation, and now that I am going to grad school at Mason would provide the undergrad students with someone they could more easily relate to, than the older, deep in their career people.

Basically we just have to introduce ourselves, say what we studied, and how it has affected our career and what other types of options are around. So just that 5 minute or less introduction, then it is a Q and A period with the students there. There are supposed to be up to 200! Should be interesting. It is supposed to be 6-8, but I am ducking out early to not miss the start of the caps game. I don’t really have that much useful information aside from APPLY EVERYWHERE and get lucky.

Disgusting Fridge wars

So, we have two ‘public’ refrigerators for the students and researchers to use. Needless to say, they are frequently revolting. The one on my floor has been cleaned recently, though, because of threats of a fridge-ectomy coming from the main office. The floor above us, who claimed their fridge was FAR cleaner than ours, hasn’t done a damned thing. I had to go look at it and report back to the main office.

Oh man...R.I.P. Don Cornelius
RIP: Don Cornelius, creator and host of the legendary musical variety show Soul Train, was found dead this morning of an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound in his home in Sherman Oaks, California. He was 75.

Introducing many Americans to soul music through his hit TV show which premiered in 1971, Cornelius helped promote the careers of such musical icons as James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Michael Jackson.

He is perhaps best remembered, even among non-viewers, for his signature catchphrase, with which he would end each show: "I’m Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and soul!"

Consider again that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every “superstar”, every “supreme leader”, every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

I read a great quote from him the other day:

A book is made from a tree. It is an assemblage of flat, flexible parts (still called ‘leaves’) imprinted with dark pigmented squiggles. One glance at it and you hear the voice of another person – perhaps someone dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, the author is speaking, clearly and silently, inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people, citizens of distant epochs, who never knew one another. Books break the shackles of time, proof that humans can work magic.

From Cosmos I think.

That is a wonderful quote.

Okay, you know those little gimmick books they sell by the register? Zen garden 101, Valentine’s quotes, etc?

One year, I was waiting to buy a book, and saw Quotes for Mother’s Day. I was leafing (!) through it, and saw one quote among all the sugar and sap that made me promptly buy the thing and give it to my Mom for mom’s day.

“Dear Mother, I have arrived safely. Please stop worrying.” ~ translated from a 2000 year old papyrus document, a letter from a daughter to her mother after a journey.

Romneyism of the Day: Mitt Romney has come under fire this morning — less than 24 hours after winning the Florida primary — for telling CNN’s Soledad O’Brien that he isn’t concerned "about the very poor" because "we have a safety net there."

When pressed on this statement by O’Brien, the presidential candidate reiterated his commitment to fixing any holes in that safety net, but also took the time to repeat the phrase "I’m not concerned about the very poor," which was undoubtedly a very poor choice of words from the man who would become one of the richest presidents in US history.

Another reason I'm really glad I am kid-free.
What The Kids Are Eating of the Day: Ruled not good enough by America’s largest fast-food chains, the so-called "pink slime" — meat and meat by-products treated with ammonia — is still A-OK by U.S. Department of Agriculture standards.

In fact, the USDA will reportedly purchase over 7 million pounds of the gunk to turn into hamburgers and tacos for cafeterias feeding America’s schoolchildren.

McDonald’s, Burger King, and Taco Bell were all persuaded to stop using ammonia-treated meat after the practice of rinsing dog-grade meat with ammonia to wash away harmful bacteria was brought to the attention of consumers by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

"We’re taking a product that would be sold in its cheaper form for dogs," said Oliver on his TV show Food Revolution. "After this process, we can give it to humans."

But a USDA spokesman said there were no plans to stop using pink slime as part of the national school lunch program.

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration as well as the Food Safety and Inspection Service considers ammonium hydroxide as ‘generally recognized as safe,’" said the spokesman, Aaron Lavallee. "FSIS reviewed the suitability of Beef Products Inc.’s use of ammonium hydroxide in order to assess its effectiveness in performing the intended technical purpose of use, at lowest level necessary, and to ensure that the product is not adulterated or misleading to consumers."

However, since ammonia beef falls outside the jurisdiction of federal labeling requirements, parents have no way of knowing what exactly is being served to their kids.

Yep. It’s like sand and dirt. After you have a few kids you realize they’re going to eat dirt at the playground and sand at the beach. The trick is to regulate it…a daily limit…LOL

Dirty kids are generally healthy kids. Constantly disinfected homes raise kids with poor immune systems.

I hear that. the other day my daughters, who are 4 and 6(in 2 weeks) poured Cheerios into the "Let’s go Fishin’ " game to “feed the fish” and then proceeded to eat the Cheerios as they caught the fish. I started to protest and then said “nah fuck it, they’ll be fine and I don’t want to fight with them on this one”

by Beakers Lab on Feb 1, 2012 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

as long as the cats aren’t using the game as their litter box, there can’t be anything too terrible that might get ingested alongside the cheerios, right?

I'm...just...WHAT THE HELL????

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/01/house-republicans-order-j_n_1246971.html

WASHINGTON — In a stunning break with First Amendment policy, House Republicans directed Capitol Hill police to detain a highly regarded documentary crew that was attempting to film a Wednesday hearing on a controversial natural gas procurement practice. Initial reports from sources suggested that an ABC News camera was also prevented from taping the hearing; ABC has since denied that they sent a crew to the hearing.

Josh Fox, director of the Academy Award-nominated documentary “Gasland” was taken into custody by Capitol Hill police this morning, along with his crew, after Republicans objected to their presence, according to Democratic sources present at the hearing. The meeting of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment had been taking place in room 2318 of the Rayburn building.

Approximately 16 officers entered the hearing room and handcuffed Fox amid audible discussions of “disorderly conduct” charges, according to Democratic sources present at the arrest.

“Gasland” received strong critical acclaim and takes a critical eye toward the practice of hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” a process in which several tons of highly pressurized water and chemicals are injected into the ground, allowing valuable natural gas to escape. The practice is decried by ecological experts for destroying ecosystems and polluting groundwater. The energy industry keeps the actual content of fracking chemicals secret.

Fox had hoped to film Wednesday’s hearing for a follow-up to “Gasland.”

crazy. I’m assuming the charges will be quietly dismissed by the AG when they look at it. the Capital Hill police should be embarrassed by their actions as well.

by Beakers Lab on Feb 1, 2012 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

they’ll do something really dumb, like charge him with something that give him the option of a jury trial. He’ll opt for it. The prosecution, knowing there is absolutely no way they’re going to get a conviction because the jury is a DC jury and they’ll vote “innocent” the moment they hear “House Republicans,” will drop the charges. But it’ll get all the way to the judge before they drop.
