In the odd coincidental close birthday department — Alex Forsythe, assistant coach of the Caps, is only 3 days old than Bruce Boudreau. As is Rowan Atkinson, MSEE, race car driver, actor and writer. Both were born on Jan 6 of that same year.

I’m really high on the Penguins, and I hate it. All that losing their players does is seem to drop their shooting% (and you can probably guess that I don’t think much of that influence)…they stay a dominant, out-shooting team regardless.

… that can’t beat anyone good. They’re not doing it this year, and, IIRC, they were abysmal against good teams last year as well.

I’m pretty sure they lost something like 75% of thier games to the top 8 teams in 2009-10.
Failure is always an option.
Sounds about right (and that might have been the year I was remembering).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I get that normally you’d dismiss shooting%, but when you see all the top 6 talent of a team on the bench don’t you think the drop in shooting% is more than just bad luck? I don’t think it’s a stretch to believe that Neil is going to convert a higher % of opportunities than Dupuis.
Please, call me F&B.
I still think they’re more talented than the least talented teams in the league.
Last year, the Oilers were at 8% and the Panthers 7.3%. I don’t think the injury-riddled Penguins should shoot worse than those teams. If they out-shoot by 7 shots per game (differential so far this season 7.2 per game), that’s in the neighborhood of half a goal per game, even if they shoot worse than the other team. Their D, goaltending, and special teams should be able to hold the other team to a reasonable total, and given the small spread teams generally have between GA and GF, they should be able to win a lot of games even without many of their top players healthy.
FWIW, last year the 5v5 shooting% range was 6.7% (NJ) to 9.2% (Philly). The year before that, it was 6.9% (Boston) to 11% (Caps) , and this year 5.6% (LA) to 10.6% (Boston).

And those are all good points regarding the raw shooting% number. But you didn’t cite that number, I still don’t know what it is. The point I was reacting to was:
All that losing their players does is seem to drop their shooting% (and you can probably guess that I don’t think much of that influence)
I think it makes perfect sense that a team’s shooting% would drop when you lose Crosby, Neal, Letang, Staal, etc.
Please, call me F&B.
Yes, but in terms of generating shots it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Losing Gomez is hurting the Habs in terms of shots because Plekanec’s job gets even harder, but for the Penguins, they keep chugging along.
Raw 5v5 shooting this year is 7.6%, but again, I think they’re more talented than anything much lower (say, 7.2%). Last year, 8.1% (tied with the Caps), and 8.9% the year before that.

So, Brad Marchand’s low bridge on Sami Salo Saturday night …suspension worthy? For just that play itself and setting aside priors for a moment, I don’t think it is—it looked to me like he used a counterhit as opposed to going for a kill shot—but I’m sure Shanny will use this teachable moment to sit him for a game. You’d think the ‘Nucks would know by heart Marchand’s duck under moves by now.
Cross check and all call.
He’s got a hearing today and I assume he will get at least a game or two.

Jack? Jack Edwards, is that you?
I’ve watched the replay multiple times, and I am convinced its suspendable. The evidence that puts it over the top for me is that Marchand completely ignores the puck right at his feet. He has to be able to take and accept a hit, if he wants to play in the NHL. He can’t claim that he hit, lest he be hit. Sorry. Doesn’t fly.
It was interference at its most brutal. Call it clipping or what you will. Play the puck and take the hit.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

Marchand said if he is suspended, he will not throw such hits in the future.
"I’ve done that a lot in the past,’’ Marchand said of his maneuver on Salo. "I’ve done it a few times this year. I did it a few times last year in the Cup Final. I’ve never been punished for it before. Just a different outcome on this one. It depends on how the league rules it. If that’s an illegal hit, then yeah, I’ll take that out of my game. From how I’ve been playing so far and different hits that have occurred, I haven’t been punished before. Nobody’s told me that’s an illegal way to protect myself. Until I’m told otherwise, I don’t really know how to react in that situation.’’

IIRC Steve Ott got nothing for this hit (though he did get suspended for the knee on Crombeen in that same game). If that hit is good, and Marchand is telling the truth that that’s how he “defends himself” then I still don’t buy the bank robbery analogy. I don’t like it, I’ve said it before, I think if you are going low you should have to be in a backwards skating approach. Skating forward and then ducking shoulder first to the legs is bush league, but as long as the league deems it legal there’s nothing we can say about it.

Ha. I hate Jack Edwards.
You say play the puck…can’t taht apply to Salo as well? He was going for a big hit, and Marchand ducked it. Not hard to believe it was instinctual, but I agree with an interference call there. The concussion symptoms of Salo won’t help Marchand’s cause with Shanny either.

Salo might have played the puck, had he had an opportunity to get to it. We’ll never know. That’s the real answer.

It should be suspended – going for the knees is not a counter hit, it’s a dirty play no better than going knee on knee. But I have no faith that Shanahan will suspend him. Marchand is a Bruin afterall.

Actually, I think there are a lot of players in Columbus who would fit the Caps’ needs. Brassard, Vermette, and Prospal would all be pretty effective in a Caps’ uniform; all are centers who can play wing or vice versa; all three are left-handed shots, and all three are in the salary range where you wouldn’t have to dump a ton of salary to fit them under the cap.
Reporter: "What’s your Mom’s birthday?"
Tortorella: "I have no idea."
He’s interesting to me, too, but he’s 29, signed until he’s 33, and his cap hit is pretty high (3.75 mil) relative to his production over this year and last. Also, his shots/game are down this year, which is of further concern. But he’s good on the dot and has tended to put up decent possession numbers in Columbus, plus I think you’re going to see any player traded out of there getting better.
Reporter: "What’s your Mom’s birthday?"
Tortorella: "I have no idea."

From Vog’s preview:
Washington is 9-7-1 under Hunter, and the team that has scored the game’s first goal has won 15 of the 17 games since he took the reins.
Since the lockout, Caps have won 65% of the regulation games in which they scored first, 22nd in NHL. Ottawa has best mark at 76%.
Here is what really stood out for me tho:
In Hunter’s eight road games, the Capitals have owned a lead for just 30:39 of the 485 minutes of road hockey they’ve played.
NHL teams need to win playoff games on the road too, yea?

It also says something about the “new NHL” with all that scoring and “no lead is safe” stuff when 2/3 of the teams in the League still win between 2/3 and 3/4 of their games when getting on the board first.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Even the mighty Bruins are only 11-9-1 when they allow the first goal. Philly is the only other club with a better than .500 record when scored on first. The first lead in the NHL is safer than U.S. Treasury bonds.

Wonder how much that has to do with the accumulation of talent and the salary cap? Seems like the NHL would like to build itself an NFL type model where there are one or two really “good” teams, one or two really “bad” teams, and everyone else is mediocre.
Also wonder how much the charity point has changed things in terms of how teams go in the third period if the game’s tied.

Sell. CBJ has been a favored team in the stats community for years now. They’ve just been unlucky. And unlucky. And unlucky. And yet at some point it has to be more than just luck. They aren’t a good team. They’ve had coaches that have done a good job at getting them to play tight and shorten games, but their goaltending has stunk minus a half-season white-hot run by Steve Mason and they don’t have enough talent to actually put the puck in the net. The bad PP isn’t “bad luck” it’s a collection of not great players that can’t take advantage of the PP.
Please, call me F&B.
Yeah, I don’t buy, for example, a low SV% necessarily being “bad luck.” I’m much more comfortable explaining that with “Sieve Mason is simply ‘not good.’”
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
And the entire severing of the goaltender from the team? Dubious. “Well aside from their goalie they are a solid team!” Yeah, too bad that guy has to actually play every night. And 11th in Fenwick isn’t exactly gangbusters. The raw difference between 11th and 19th is probably not a huge amount, as well.
Please, call me F&B.
"Well aside from their goalie they are a solid team!"
I don’t get what’s so bad about saying something like this. It pretty nicely summed up the Caps for most of this season. I understand that a goalie is part of the team, but it doesn’t make the above point any less accurate.
I guess. But I also find it ridiculous to say that a team with 0 playoff victories (games, not series) in a decade is “just unlucky” or even worse “would be a success in any other division in the league.” CBJ isn’t a good team. End of story.
Please, call me F&B.
I can’t remember where, but someone wrote that guys would come to Columbus and just be flabbergasted by the culture of “eh” there, and it’s pervasive throughout the organization and has been for years.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Is there any reason to think Carter isn’t a hard worker? Or that he’d be happy with a culture of “eh”? He’s had success at every level he’s played, I doubt he wants to be in “eh” purgatory.
Please, call me F&B.
Isn’t there plenty of reason to believe he’s not “a character guy”? Isn’t that most of the reason PHI shipped him out?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I wouldn’t consider Pronger a character guy, but they kept him and shipped out the guys that were in conflict with him.
’course, I doubt anyone would be stupid enough to take that contract, so….
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$908.82!
I’d say Pronger isn’t a character guy in the sense that you wouldn’t necessarily want him tutoring your eight-year old on how to deliver a clean hit.
Is he a guy I’d love in the Caps locker room? Damn right (health nonwithstanding).
Pronger is absolutely a character guy by the fact that they kept him and got rid of the other two guys. Unless you think Philly traded the character guys and kept the problem guy.
Philly can’t trade Pronger. No one is stupid enough to take that contract. So that left trading the guys that were on the otherside of the locker room rift.
Look, Mike Richards and Jeff Carter aren’t exactly choir boys. But Pronger is no locker room saint, from what I’ve read.

I guess that depends on how much deference you give PHI’s front office and their other moves… no? Bryz is different because he’s a goalie, but I think it’s fair to ask whether he’s a character guy in light of the comments from his ex-PHX teammates and some of the stuff (albeit edited) on 24/7. Goalies are a different breed for sure, but I think there’s enough of a cloud of uncertainty around PHI that it’s hard to draw such firm conclusions. (They also brought in noted character guy Jaromir Jagr…)
We did a drinking game for 24/7, drink beer for every f-bomb and a shot for every “motherfucker.” I went through a six pack on my own. Only had to take one shot though.

Don’t think that tweet has to be based on his time with the org., but no surprise, not many…Nash and that may be it except for some off-ice staff. Amazing how many changes the organization has made, but nothing to show for those changes.
That’s sorta my point. Different GM, different coaches… does Carter honestly believe that treating vets like crap is a directive from ownership? And ask Nikita Filatov how much of a veteran he was treated like as a rookie. Or Johansen. Etc.
There may be some validity to Carter’s criticisms, but without spelling them out more clearly, it’s just bomb-throwing.

That, his age, and the two firsts.
He’s past his years of greatest production, he’s not a discount contract, he’s not a position of need, and it would cost the team’s two best reloading assets. Plus, even at a discount Semin is worth at least a first round pick, so you’re asking if I’d trade 3 first round picks and a promising young defenseman for Nash and Prospal (36 years old when season ends, UFA)? That seems facially absurd to me, but maybe I’m a homer. Make the case that the proposed trade would help the Caps at all.

To that first point, the fact that the injuries themselves happened on the road doesn’t mean that his groin isn’t over-worked (hey now) or weakened by playing his home games on a bad sheet and thus is more susceptible to injury anywhere. (That would be the theory, at least.)
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

What if you removed concussions and freak injuries (broken bones and whatnot)? What if you only looked at injuries that could be reasonably be attributed to ice conditions?
Impossible to say, but I don’t think any rink (unless it’s a rainy one at night /Cox’d) is any more or less likely to be the site of a concussion, while it’s not unreasonable to think that a given sheet may be more likely to cause a groin injury, no?

Hmm. Groins for sure.
It’s hard to say. Obviously, it’s easier as a theoretical exercise. Take a knee, for example – could be a rut, could be a check. Should those be included?

Groins, knees, and ankles would be where to look, but then you’d have to weed out the impact injuries to knees and ankles.

I’m guessing the Caps will make a token offer to Green at the end of the season if nothing else (can’t they get compensatory picks if he signs elsewhere?). I’m ready to cut ties myself, I don’t think it makes sense to build a defense that relies on Green playing more than 40 games a year. We’re now looking at 49 GP last season and very possibly less this season, not to mention his playoff durability.
It sucks. It really does. He’s gone from The Next Brian Leetch to the Next Tom Poti in a year and a half. I remember Peerless talked about how the Caps’ window with the current core was going to be a lot slimmer than many thought. Sorry if this has already been posted, but Dirk at OtF posted a nice look at the team-level ZS% and QoC SDs. Vancouver obviously is way high on the ZS deviation, and NYR matches hard, but a little surprising how little, relatively, the Caps are matching (maybe a result of matching only CLaW/Carlzner to top lines and not planning for much else).

Is it really surprising? Bruce was never a line-matcher, and he’s still coached more than half of the games this team has played this season.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Well, I guess I underestimated how little Bruce did it before, if DH is indeed doing it more. It’s not like Bruce was completely oblivious, either—he got Semin, Johansson, Perreault out in the offensive zone, Ovechkin out against 3rd and 4th lines, Laich out against top lines.

2012 Mid Season Mock Draft
Yeah it’s early, but for shits and giggles I came across this page on a mid season 2012 mock draft done by one of the guys at The Hockey Writers.
For the Caps, he projects:
10th overall (own pick): Jacob Trouba (D, NTDP, USHL)
American John Carlson has been a fantastic pick for the Washington Capitals and his country-mate Jacob Trouba has the potential to be equally as good. Washington has two first round picks after trading Varlamov to Colorado and Trouba would fit perfectly on a team with good forward depth. Jacob has good size (6’2", 196 lbs) and is a player with good offensive skills who isn’t afraid to lay the body either.
14th pick (the one we got from the Avs): Martin Frk (RW, Halifax, QMJHL)
The Capitals’ second pick in the opening round allows them to take a bit of a risk and the concussion that has currently sidelined Martin Frk for most of the season is certainly risky. The Czech winger is a big gritty forward with good offensive skills. Frk was once considered by scouts as a potential first overall pick but his injury has caused him to slide. The talent is there and if Washington gambles on him here then it could pay off huge
A fun read, check out the link posted above.
I’m surprised they have Colorado finishing better than the Caps.

Hmmmm reading the opening paragraphs would have been a good idea. It’s sad that the Caps are tenth worst in the league right now. They shouldn’t be. But maybe we were mistaken and they just aren’t a very good team.

Caps also have a couple of games in hand on most teams, fwiw.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Not that I am saying this is the case, but how long would the Caps have to struggle before the consensus becomes that Boudreau was able to consistently get a middle of the pack team to overachieve? They obviously were struggling before he arrived and he was able to turn a last place team into President’s Trophy winners. Now that he’s gone, what if they continue down the path of a .500 team? What if what we are seeing now is a reflection of the true talent level of this team?
It would explain the playoff failures under Boudreau; a team that plays above its talent level for whatever reason in the regular season will struggle once the playing field is leveled in the post season. Whatever advantage Boudreau may have had in motivation or the ability to instill confidence would be neutralized when playing the top teams in the league in a setting where everybody is motivated every game.
It would also explain the mental weakness this team has had. If your game is based on confidence and motivation, it’s going to fall apart whenever something happens to shake that confidence.
So if Boudreau’s success was based on his ability to instill confidence in his players, what happened this season? Well, we’ve all said that this team seems to have lost its swagger. My guess would be by changing his systems twice in the span of a year signaled to his players that he didn’t have confidence in his own system…so why should they? So what happens to a team that was riding a wave of confidence to carry them farther then their skill level would allow once that confidence is shattered? I sincerely hope we aren’t finding out.
by HockeyGoalie29 on Jan 9, 2012 12:46 PM EST up reply actions
The first change in system last year happened because the firewagon-style of hockey wasn’t working anymore; the Caps couldn’t score enough goals to keep winning 4-3. There was that 8 game losing streak that signaled the end of the old historically dominant offensive Caps.
Maybe Montreal completely destroyed their offensive confidence. Their power play was in the doldrums for a really long time.
The first change in system last year happened because the firewagon-style of hockey wasn’t working anymore
True, but what does it say to your players when you switch to a system that you have openly criticized and are on record as despising? I was surprised the players bought into it so well last season.

I think Frk is going to plummet if he can’t get back and have a torrid end of the season. Not sure I’d want him.
I would LOVE to get Trouba for so many reasons. First, he was solid from what I saw at the WJC, I like his skill set. But on top of that, endless puns. You can go Kindergarten Cop “It’s not a Trouba!” or Jerky Boys “That’s a fuckin’ Trouba!” The only limit is how much time I can spend thinking ’em up!

Frk was supposed to be The One for Halifax. They traded away a lot for the right to draft him and he’s been more-or-less an injured bust. Some good games, but I’m not sure enough to draft him in the first round.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
It’s impossible to look back at a draft pick and say it was a bad one based on injuries unless they were injuries which existed at the time of the draft or there were reasons to know he’d suffer an injury.
I know, but it is possible to look at a guy who hasn’t been able to play as he should have because of injury and say maybe we don’t use a first round pick on him. Particularly when one of the injuries is a bad concussion.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Curious though, did they give up a lot to draft him? I don’t recall that specifically. I know they took a risk drafting him where they did, because they didn’t know if he’d actually come over and play for them.
Frk was a top-ranked talent for the import draft, I don’t see how one can look back and say now they shouldn’t have used a first round pick on him.
I know very little about Frk, but I do know that he’s a Walsh client and thus I am frequently annoyed by the mention of his name.

The San Jose Mercury News didn’t interpret it properly. If he was joking, this should have been conveyed in the article. Another problem is that the Mercury News article also didn’t provide context, which was that it was during a presser, for which video was available. I’m not convinced by how it assigns defensive credit/blame. The offensive side is relatively easy to do and lots of people have done it. The defensive side is still a mystery, IMO.
Please, call me F&B.
I really think that hockey is the most difficult sport (of the major US ones) to do really good statistical analysis.
There isn’t enough scoring.
There aren’t clear and distinct singular actions like in baseball.
Possession is extremely fluid.
There are too many instances where your team can be horrible yet you win or when your team is amazing and you lose (because of goaltending).
Somebody will come up with something, sure. I’m still waiting.
Does anyone have any thoughts about the Point Shares system from hockey-reference.com?
It seems to have the same shortcomings plus/minus does: favors players on the best teams, esp those who play big minutes.
Also, I am not a fan of how they use PS, esp for similar players.

Wasn’t around a lot this weekend, but pre-Green injury, was there much discussion about the decision to pair Green and Orlov together?
I only saw portions of the SJS game, but I missed most of the part when Green was playing. How did they look as a pairing before Green left the game due to injury? As I posted last week before the home game, I don’t understand the decision to pair those two together.
I know Green is injured now, but curious what others think and how they looked together.
Bob McK's Waiver Wire Report

ANA puts D Mark Fraser on waivers. NSH puts LW Brodie Dupont on waivers.
Speaking of…. unless someone on the Pens has a season ending injury, they’re kind of hosed on the trade deadline in terms of taking on salary if I read cap geek right. Not much cap space available.
It’s scary how many good teams have a boatload of available space, though.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
But if the Pens LTIR Sid, they’ve got plenty to work with, no?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
That was my implication. But they have to decide if he’s not coming back at all, right? You can expand the roster at the deadline, but not the cap. So he wouldn’t be able to come back for the playoffs, even. Like last year. I question if they’re ready to make that decision.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Why couldn’t he come back for the playoffs? It’s what a lot of us think the Caps did with Green – LTIR him for the regular season, do what you need to do, then have him for G1 of the playoffs.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
And if they LTIR Sid and he misses the rest of the season and playoffs, they’re pretty much doneski anyway.

I despised Barrasso when he played. The fact that he played for two of my least favourite teams in Buffalo and Pittsburgh was a big part of it.
And he was a major asshole.
I’ll never forgive Barrasso for pinching out Darren Puppa.

Was that during the intermission or did PIT have to use a timeout?

It’d be pretty cool if somehow Schneider ended up playing against Luongo in the Olympics.
I don't want to work, I want to hang on the blog all day.
I dunno. Luongo will be 34. They could do a lot worse than Price, Ward, and MAF, although the last two are pretty much the exact same guy.

Last year he got plenty of starts and posted better numbers. Maybe just a matter of working himself into a groove.

Neuvy did a great job in a goalie-duel 2010 Eastern Conference Final series against Manchester when Andrew Gordon got hurt and the Hershey power play machine fell apart and the team stopped scoring.
According to my notes (via Peerless), Neuvy was better in overtime three times in that series.

Paging Mr Neuvirth….

Whyno says Vokes (but I also thought immediately of that great Neuvy quote).

Btw, as I was wondering if Neuvy will ever get a start again, I glanced at Hunter’s goalie usage in London over the past handful of years. Nothing really stood out… except when he had Steve Mason in 2006-07 and Mason got 90% of the total minutes.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Well based on how the Caps have played this year that bodes well. Hunter has experience handing huge minutes to a sieve.

90% of the total minutes eh? Who does Hunter think he is, Mike Keenan?

If he was really Keenan, though, Vokoun would’ve been pulled, put back in, pulled again, and then put back in to play the last 53 seconds of a 4-3 loss.
I’m so thankful Keenan isn’t coaching this team, but I miss having him in the NHL just for the entertainment value.
Do me a solid, Columbus.

There are a lot of fans here who’d disagree with you. If I remember correctly, there were some fans who wanted Keenan to become the next coach here. They cited the fact that Ilya Kovalchuk had a good opinion of him. And the fact that he does instill discipline.

Phil Oreskovic called up to Hershey from the Stingrays. Phil is prolly filling in for Patrick Wellar, who went out with a high ankle sprain in the Outdoor Classic.
Kinda wish we could see Dustin Stevenson, but … yeah. The Bears are playing mostly on the raod the next two weeks anyway.

Awwww, that’s cute. Julien thinks the Nucks are as dirty as his Bruins:
I think it’s pretty hypocritical, everything that’s been going on. It’s unfortunate because, you know, sometimes you gotta look in your backyard. We all know that [Vigneault’s] got the same type of players on his team and they’ve all done the same thing. You just have to look at Burrows putting his blade in Thornton’s throat. It’s so hypocritical. It’s unfortunate. I guess we’re stupid, we’re idiots, they’re the smartest team in the league.
Man, the Bruins can rot in hell. Not only are they the dirtiest team in the league, they are incredibly whiny. Dealing with them is like hiring an insincere baby with amnesia to solve a crime it committed.

That’s not to say that Burrows isn’t a dirty shit, though.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
His dirty play doesn’t even come close to rivaling the Bruins. Especially when you take into account how dangerous their play is to the health of other players. They’re scumbags, yes, but they’re not nearly as dangerous as half the Bruins roster.

In fairness to the rest of the hockey world, the Nucks are whiny and dirty.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Not to the extent that the Bruins are. When a player like Marchand (or Lucic) is crying “Woe is me, I’m defending myself against the big bad Salo (or Miller)” it takes whiny bullshit to a whole new level. Those pukes can’t fail fast enough.
If you’re gonna be a dirty scumsucking asshole at least man up. You can’t be one of the dirtiest players in the league AND a whiny little pussy. I don’t remember seeing anything about Bobby Clarke ever crying that woe is me line that the Bruins love (though it wouldn’t surprise me, and feel free to prove me wrong; I wouldn’t mind more reasons to hate that dirt bag.)

Agreed. Just pointing out that the ’Nucks are also a detestable squad (more on the “whiny/divey” side of things than the “dirty” side).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Agreed wholeheartedly. I’ve had the discussion many times before, the Nucks brand of scumbaggery is more of the annoyance side of things. Which I find far less detestable. I’ll be annoyed by a Lapierre or a Burrows (though I actually like Burrows for whatever reason), but I find it hard to really hate them because they aren’t really going to injure anyone like a Steve Ott or Raffi Torres.

He’s like … not even a real person.
But there are always exceptions. Backstrom injured Goc; is he dirty? One hit does not a dangerous player make.

I’d say that Lapierre’s dangerous hit was way more intentional and dangerous than what Baxter did, and Lapierre has much more of a history. He’s dirty with the stick and then looks to draw the retaliation. Ask Nick Lidstrom if dirty stick work can hurt a guy.
Please, call me F&B.
Testicular torsion, oof. And I pretty much agree with all of that. But I still think in general Lapierre is not a very dangerous player. Players like he and Plekanec may be liberal with their stick, but they aren’t often jabbing guys in the yam bags a la Danny Briere (not that I’ve seen or remember, and I watch 80 games a year [more actually]).
(I wasn’t trying to compare the Baxter and Lapierre hits, just using that as an easy example.)

Did Marchand waive his right to an in-person hearing? Generally, I thought that in-person hearings were required when a suspension of more than 3 games is warranted.
