I know how superstitions are dumb. But I know this – last night, Locker says the Sharks power play has been bad, and boom, they score. Joe B. (I think) says Caps haven’t been giving up third period goals, and boom, Sharks score. Also, I fell asleep a couple of times while trying to watch the game, and each time I woke up, the Caps scored, so of course I tried it again in the third period. Too bad I couldn’t get that to work. ;)

Ha! I heard all of that, too, and was yelling at the TV for them to stop talking about it. Then, the hammer fell. Those two should know better!

And he would rock if one could reasonably expect him to continue on this trend for a prolonged period of time.

We can hope, but only time will tell. At least the penalties are way down in this stretch where he’s been scoring. I think the early penalty stretch got in his head and Hunter has seemed to help calm it down. Just wish we could get Green back totally and Backs to see what we can really do together. It’s been a long time.

Glad to see you stick up for Semin. He didn’t play great last night, but as you say, he is ‘trending’ and we need that now for the long haul. Instead of singling out Semin, why did no one mention Laich’s or Knuble’s invisibility? Those two, in particular, should have been picked up some of the slack in Nicky’s absence, particularly Brooks.
After he missed so many games, I was disappointed to see Mike Green in the first period taking hit after heavy hit. It was obvious that the Sharks zoned in on Green from the start and the Caps don’t seem to care to protect him. It didn’t take long for SJ to take Green right the fuck out. IDK, maybe a stint in Hershey first (if possible) would have done him some good.

Green set himself up for the hit. Tired of watching him absorb punishment instead of responding in kind. Greenie – You see someone coming – get a shoulder check ready to respond to the incoming check.

get a shoulder check ready to respond to the incoming check.
He does that a lot. It frequently results in him not being able to play the puck, and sometimes even a penalty against (Green can hit hard when he wants to) (didn’t MTL score a PPG in Game 7 due to this?).

Well, the puck ended up in front of the net after he got drilled and couldn’t recover. So…what to do? Can’t keep getting hammered game after game.
by ShootTheBullets on Jan 8, 2012 12:25 PM EST up reply actions
He hooked a forward in the Mtl game 7 after misplaying a puck (I think) near the blue line, IIRC.

I’d gladly take two minutes Green of in the penalty box every once in a while when the alternative is him getting his head blown out his ass every time he gets near the puck.

Right, I know teams target him but why is he the only D on this team who routinely gets crushed? We don’t talk about having to protect Carlson, or Alzner, or Wideman, or anyone else.
by Kolzilla on Jan 8, 2012 12:54 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I did see many players hold onto the puck long enough to get a nice target on their chests. It definitely wasn’t only Green, but since Mr. Glass can’t stay healthy, he shouldn’t try to be a hero all the time.

No, MTL scored a goal in Game 7 because Green took himself out of position to hit a player during a race for the puck (which is very different from bracing yourself for a hit and making a counterhit, which usually isn’t called). They scored a PPG in Game 7 when he took a terrible offensive zone hooking PIM.

I’ve asked this a couple times and got no response but even the homer San Jose announcers picked up on it last night….playing man-to-man defense, while effective, can be very risky especially with a team whose forwards aren’t the best back checkers. I could be wrong but on the 2 key goals last night – Vlasic’s and Marleau’s – the defense and/or offensive back checker was nowhere to be found. Plus, every since abandoning the zone, Carlzner have dropped back to mediocrity. I think we somehow need to ‘tighten-up’ in the back end somehow. I am not saying we need to get back to big bodies clogging one side of the ice (can you say Sarge)…but on some nights it doesn’t seem like a bad idea.
If I’m understanding correctly, the realignment/schedule changes have been shelved for at least next season. This should elicit a giant sigh of relief from Capsland, in light of the team’s road record lately, especially in the Pacific time zone. Once again, only 9 roadies against the mighty West, (plus 3 at Winnipeg) rather than the 16 under the new arrangement..

Looking at the Penguins current injury list, it’s nice to see that the birthday wishes of Ted Leonsis are, in fact, coming true.
Be careful and don’t tempt fate. I’m still waiting on updates on 19 and 52.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.
Follow me on Twitter.
And I think I’m far less worried about 19 than I am 52. He’s headed down Tom Poti Lane, and he’s much younger.

Neither Nicklas Backstrom (head) nor Mike Green (groin) are on the ice for #Caps practice at HP Pavilion today. Everyone else present.
But Backstrom hasn’t had a setback….

I still think Backstrom should have stayed in DC. After the Crosby situation, guys should not get on planes if they have a concusion.
MOAR SEVERINO!
I know it’s floating around that concussions are exacerbated by getting on airplanes, but I haven’t seen anyone actually cite evidence of that. I’m wondering if that’s actually the case, or if it’s a meme that got started and seemed reasonable.

The CDC website: “Some people report that flying in airplanes makes their symptoms worse shortly after a concussion.”
I’m not sure whether this applies to Nick, who practiced and said he felt fine. If he wasn’t having symptoms, I’m not sure if there was anything to exacerbate.

I’ll add that Green’s concussion may or may not have been exacerbated by flying home to Calgary for a funeral last year (which is to say I’ve heard that insinuated).

would the caps have called someone up? you can’t believe anything they say, so maybe their actions hold some clues
Just wanted to say for the record that Wideman was very clearly highsticked by Mitchell behind Vokoun immediately prior to the first Sharks goal. Comcast switched to the behind-the-net camera at the moment that Mitchell’s stick rode up to the side of Wideman’s face. Penalty called there, no Sharks opening goal. Had to post that.
the Bruins and Marchand’s defense of his actions is laughable. Completely ridiculous.

I love how Salo gets punched in the back of the head twice preceding the penalizing hit.
I have a lot of respect for Thomas, but some way or another I’m glad Mike Green won’t have to share a division with them next season.

Actually, now that I think about it, we wouldn’t share a division with them anyway. Long weekend. Forgive me.

He’s an RFA, and unless Matt Carle (or another top-pair D) makes it to UFA, I don’t think the Caps really have a choice. What this does do is (hopefully) allow the Caps to sign him for a year or two for a similar cap hit to what he has now (~$5 million). Worst case, like DiPietro, he’ll just be on LTIR most of the time, and the Caps can get another top-four D.

And if he’s on LTIR, the Caps would be unable to bank cap space for deadline trades and other player acquisitions during the season. Wait…. aren’t they in that boat anyhow.
