So Gabby presumably tried to give the Sharks coaching staff some inside information eh? What’s wrong coach, pissed that your old team is doing better than your new team?
Still mad he got fired, I expect,

I’m going to guess that (past player tendencies) he may not have that much to give. Maybe he’s repaying a favor McLellan did for him in the past. Shit happens.

I hope the NHLPA loses every point of contention in the CBA negotiations. Fuck Donald Fehr and the horse he rode in on. And fuck those whiny douche players that vetoed realignment. You get to play hockey for a living. You get paid millions for it. If you have a 10 day road trip, tough shit, you’ll get over it. People who get paid less have to take longer road trips to much assier locations to keep food on the table and a roof over the heads of their families. You live a pretty sweet life. You get paid millions and you don’t even have to pay for food on the road, you probably get a better per diem than anyone else out there. Suck it up and deal with it, because this realignment is better for the league, it is better for the current sport, and it is better for the future of the sport.
Also, fuck you Eric Staal. Don’t whine because you were getting taken out of a weak division and put in a very tough one.

I feel the NHLPA could have used their agreement to realignment as leverage to get more of what they wanted in the CBA talks, but instead they threw a hissy fit. Shame

I think using their agreement to realignment as leverage to get more of what they want in the CBA is exactly what the union is doing. Good on them.

I see your point, but I’m not sure how much trust is there, and the union has to feel they were railroaded on this in the first place.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The “Union” can fuck off in my view. People who bust their asses in unions their whole lives should be insulted there even exists a players union. Don’t want to play under the new re-alignment plan? Fuck off and go play in Europe.
It isn’t even anger-inducing. It does not seem to be worth that kind of emotional investment. It might not even be disappointing any more. It is expected.
-Peerless 5.6.2011
considering how much the owners took advantage of the players before a union existed, the union is a net positive. Since the NHL gets an anti-trust waiver, a union is needed to balance that. The union has been a mess in the past, but still better than nothing.

Yeah, I disagree. The owners came up with their plan, puffed their chests out and said, “This is how it ’s gonna be!”
Why should the players simply rubber stamp it?
It sucks for what it portends, but I can’t be angry at the union for (finally) sticking up for itself. You want something, you give something – that’s how collective bargaining negotiations work.
I also think your rant is way off base in a number of ways, but that’s neither here nor there.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I think the travel issue is ultimately bogus – teams aren’t going to want to over-burden the players, either, from a competitve standpoint. The playoff format is a legitimate concern though. It’s the thing I liked least in the proposal.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
I think the travel issue is ultimately bogus
Yeah, it’s a canard.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’m not against the union standing up for itself and raising its concerns. I’m surprised we hadn’t heard any discussion of players opinions and concerns sooner than now. It had almost appeared that the realignment was a “done” deal — until now.
There is both good and bad on the proposed realignment. The unequal teams in the conferences (and its implication on odds for making the playoffs) is a concern. I would love the 4 division/conference format even more if we expanded to 2 more teams. But, then again, expansion doesn’t work in today’s economic climate and the fact that we have current teams in financial trouble.
On the travel in the proposal. Yes, there is more travel out of division/conference. They were finally moving Dallas and Minnesota to a alignment that makes more sense and playing Winnipeg in its logical place. I was surprised that Columbus and Detroit didn’t get moved to one of the more easterly conferences which is what I would have recommended.

Among other things, I just assumed that when the NHL put forward the plan Gary had done his job and already consulted with the PA, and knew that this plan was going to fly (and thus the horse-trading for the CBA had already occurred). Either Gary didn’t do his job or, like the NFL tried to do with proposing an 18-game schedule, this realignment plan was the first major volley by the NHL to get its players to bargain against something the NHL isn’t necessarily firmly attached to as an idea, and thus, strengthen the NHL’s position. The only downside is that I think hockey fans (at least those of us from the SE) are generally more amenable to this realignment than football fans were to an 18 game schedule. But I doubt Gary really cares, so long as they make money.
Everything sounds smarter in Tikkanesse....

Clearly this is probably how it should have happened. I think it shows how little regard for the union the league has.

From what I was hearing, a majority of the players FAVORED realignment. I don’t think they actually voted against it – I think this was almost entirely on Donald Fehr.
Failure is always an option.
I get the vibe that this is just posturing. It’s more of a “We’re mad at how you did it” than a “We don’t like it.”
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Exactly. I suspect the new agreement will involve the union more, but then make minimal changes. Definitely seems to be more “We will be included in decisions.” than “We hate the new structure.”

This is ultimately just a negotiating posture. The PA got hosed after the lockout – and I realize they did themselves no favors in how they handled the negotiation – and Fehr probably feels the need to regain some ground.
Realignment probably happens in a form fairly close to that proposed by the League, but it the PA will wring some concessions out of them for it.
Either that or as suggested upthread it’s a red herring from the League that they will ultimately concede on while remaining firm on other (unknown) issues that are more dear to them. I personally doubt the League is that sophisticated at negotiations, personally. But you never know.
Anyhoo, this isn’t imho anything to get your knickers in a twist about.

I found this quote interesting too. I tied it in with Johnson’s observations in one of the precaps that it’s not that Ovi had to find new tricks or weapons but rather find new areas on the ice from which to shoot—and that’s where his defense could help by moving the puck up more quickly to give him that extra half second to create that space. In general it feels as if there is more of a strategic plan to help Ovi find his game.

So, at least we can expect Backstrom to be back. While Hunter says Semin is “ready to go”, I have my doubts that he’ll play tonight. Guessing Hunter wants to give him an “extra” night off. Given the fact that players used as “fill ins” on higher lines and practice with the 4th line are generally scratched players. Well, we’ll know tonight. Or even sooner when we see who’s skating during the “scratch” skate at the end of today’s morning skate.

I don’t wonder about Ovie’s drop in scoring production. He has been coached into mediocrity. To wit:
He was told his style was reckless and he had to tone down his physical play, so he did.
He was told he was predictable and had to change his attack style, do something different, so he did
He was told to pass more, use the other players more, so he did.
He was told he needed to be rested during the regular season in preparation for the playoffs, so his ice time was reduced.
Change the style that had resulted in multiple 50+ goals/year, don’t shoot so much, and don’t play so much and now he scores less. Is it any wonder? No, it is not. It is a very predictable result. My hope is Hunter will let Ovie be Ovie, do whatever he wants, and play him a lot. The result will be more scoring production and a return of the ‘old’ Ovie.
While I agree the resting for the playoffs is kind of bogus for a guy like Ovechkin, I think some of those criticisms are valid. Just because he was a top five goal scorer in league history through his first five seasons doesn’t mean he can’t do things that will help him sustain his success. Five years of Bossy and seven of Iginla is amazing.

Too bad about Nicky; his health should be the paramount concern of course. It should be interesting to see whether – and when – Halpy gets moved up to take draws. Thornton seems virtually unbeatable; he is quite canny in that regard and always takes key draws. I assume Brooks will get most of the assignments against him, but McLellan has him out all the time so there will be mismatches. I think the Caps will do ok tonight but they need to forecheck and stay in the SJ zone so Thornton-Couture-Marleau-Pavelski-Clowe, a formidable set of offensive forwards, can’t do their work. Go Caps!
McLellan runs power against power, so he likely would want Thornton and Boyle against Ovechkin. If Hunter can avoid that match, fantastic.

Yes, McLellan does that….or, he might try to match Handzus up with Ovi, although he has been dropped to 4th line inexplicably. In any case, I think if our top 5 or 6 (minus Nicky) can offset their top 5 or 6, our bottom 6 (which is due to pop a few!) could be the difference. Even more likely, though, is the offensive potential of our defense….clearly better that SJ’s. Once you get past Boyle and Burns, they don’t have too much fire power from the back end. I haven’t heard about goaltending but I hope it isn’t Nemi…he has been hot lately. There have been some murky rumors about Nittymaki but I don’t think we would be that lucky.
