The Noon Number
3,680.59 - Where the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed on October 30, 1993, the last time the Capitals won in San Jose.
Since then, the Caps are 0-10-1 (and that "one" is a tie - a manner in which the NHL actually was comfortable ending games back in the day), and have been outscored 41-21 overall and 19-7 in four losses since the lockout. They'll get another chance to end the streak tomorrow night.

I have to confess when I first saw this stat that I was surprised to learn that San Jose had a team in 1993. I’m also surprised that the Caps have only played 11 games there in the last 19 years, and glad that will be changing next season.
Sharks came into being in 1991.
teams in opposing conferences generally only played at each other’s home rink every other year for a while (and that’s the current set up). Immediately coming out of the lockout, Caps only played each west team 2 our of 3 years.

Sure, the Sharks came into being in 91, but Caps didn’t exist before ’04. I call Shenanigans.

I’ve always been surprised that no other NHL team chose to use Sharks as their mascot before San Jose did.

Evgeni Kuznetsov was a year old the last time the Caps won in San Jose.
Reporter: "What’s your Mom’s birthday?"
Tortorella: "I have no idea."
And, I had posted in a previous thread that Alex Ovechkin was 8 years old. MIke Green and Jay Beagle had just turned 8 that month. That was also the month that the original “Mighty Ducks” movie came out — obviously before the team was set up in Anaheim, given that the team was named as a result of the movie’s success. I wonder if Green and Beagle had lobbied their parents to take them to that movie. I recall that my 8 year old lobbied to see that movie and I, as any hockey loving parent would do, took her and took her to all the sequels as well.

I respect the trivia but I gotta say I’m not overwhelmed by this stat. Sharks have been pretty good for a majority of that streak, and the Caps don’t even play there every year.
It isn’t even anger-inducing. It does not seem to be worth that kind of emotional investment. It might not even be disappointing any more. It is expected.

True, but it’s hard to go 0-10-1 against any opponent.

I hear ya – they can’t all be " Dale Hunter has fought 14 other NHL coaches."

The Sharks looked ‘just ok’ against Columbus last night, but played two consecutive nights. They will only have today to rest before tomorrow’s game. So far, the Minny trade hasn’t worked out great. Burns is doing pretty well, but nothing spectacular. Havlat is out for a month after busting his leg coming on to ice off the bench (!); but even up to then he only had a couple goals. They have 1 and 2/3 great lines: Thornton, Marleau, Pavelski, Couture, Clowe….followed by a bunch of speedy but not-all-that productive forwards. Boyle has slowed a bit on D but is still pretty good. Murray is a tough little bugger that will probably try to knock our guys around a bit. Caps should match up with them pretty well through 4 lines but they will have to skate. They will also probably never get a face-off against Thronton; damn, he is good.
they’re on a 106 point pace, same as Chicago and Vancouver. I think they’re doing okay for themselves. They’re doing better than Minnesota, that’s for sure. SJS, Boston, and NYI have played the least number of games in the entire league. just something to keep in mind as you look at SJS point totals.

Thanks for the comment; I didn’t mean to suggest they weren’t doing well; they are. I watch all of their games. They are a good team and should go pretty far this year. If truth be told, they kind of remind me of the Caps, i.e. class organization, lots of offense, skill-oriented, no thugs, good coaching, etc. I only meant to suggest that some of their guns got off to a bit of a slow start, they have only modest secondary scoring, and, definitely, the local consensus is that Havlat, especially, and Burns could be doing a bit more for the value given up for them. I certainly think they have the capability to end up in the top 3 or 4 of the Western conference.
Since the Caps last won in San Jose
1) No one, not even Bill Clinton, had heard of Monica Lewinski
2) In fact, Clinton was still in the first year of his presidency
3) Defending Stanley Cup Champions: Montreal Canadiens
4) There were no Baltimore Ravens, and the team in Houston was the Oilers.
5) The Winnipeg Jets were in the NHL… the Original Winnipeg Jets. In fact all 4 WHA refugees were still in their original locations
And to prove how weird that season was for the Caps. Not only did they win in San Jose, they won in the first round of the playoffs beating (you won’t believe this…) Pittsburgh. They proceeded to lose in the second round in 5 games to the eventual champion NY Rangers, but not before Kevin Hatcher scored a 170 foot short-handed goal against Mike Richter in Game 5.

Absent from the lineup that night in 1993?
Dale Hunter, serving Game 13 of his 21-game suspension for that little “incident” a few months prior in the playoffs.

Just to summarize: I don’t care that we don’t play in SJ every year. 1993 was too darn long ago.

I believe my 8 year old daughter dressed as a witch for Halloween that year but I’m not sure. She did lobby for me to take her to Mighty Ducks and I did. Mike Green and Jay Beagle celebrated their 8th birthdays that month. Wonder if they tried to get their parents to take them to Mighty Ducks. Ovi was 8 years old.
