Third Period Open Thread
Tampa's got a one-goal lead after two, but the Caps have a secret offensive weapon: a well-rested Joel Rechlicz. Third period ahead.

Carlson has been terrible at clearing the puck lately. It’s like the spirit of Tom Poti got restless and found a new host.

I found Schultz #55 here in St. Paul. Wearing the “A” and playing strong.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.
Follow me on Twitter.
Good Goddamn. Someone explain to me how could Schultz be worse than: 1) Hamr, 2) Carlson, 3) Erskine.
Carlson has to find his game at some point and when he does it will be a very good thing for the team so other then benching him for maybe a game just to try and get him right I don’t think we should sit him. I also think that Hammer can be the same way, he has been horrible at times this year but I think some of that is the new system and other then for a few games I think he is better then 55. However I don’t see any upside in Erskine especially if was are going to use a forward slot on a fighter anyway 55 is much better then 4 especially when you take the fighting ability out of consideration.
Eakin and Ward each had 2 shifts in the first and 2 shifts in the second. Rechlicz stayed on the bench for the second. Eakin with the most ice time of the 3: 04:08
Erskine TOI through 2: 04:22
While VLC is running our guys lefta nd right, Ersk and Recker are stapled to the bench.

As I have seen pointed out before going to the 2 ref system has really hurt the officiating because now half the refs in the league wouldn’t be good enough to make the league in the old days.

That’s not fair. The Caps were hard to play against tonight. Mistakes cost them, which is what happens, but they were playing hard. Considering all they were missing, I’m not mad at it.
He does. Just a game or 2, but he needs to get a break and get his head straight.
Failure is always an option.
Just sat 6 days not sure how much more you want him to miss.
by icehammer97 on Jan 31, 2012 10:12 PM EST up reply actions
A game or 2, not based on days. He’s a liability right now – he’s better than that.
Failure is always an option.
To me 2nd goal was not on him because Hammer’s man scored after Hammer was tripped can’t really blame Carlson. 3rd goal was scored because Hammer got beat going to the net. The 4th goal Orlov needs to either take MSL or Stamkos he didn’t cover anyone so Carlson covered MSL when he came across the net onto Carlson’s side and Orlov covered no one, some blame goes to Carlson there but Orlov is much more responsible for the game. Carlson hasn’t been great of late but tonight was not as bad as the +/- says it was for him. Caps fans should know how +/- can be a poor stat when talking about how good a defenseman is. See Jeff Schultz.
by icehammer97 on Jan 31, 2012 10:20 PM EST up reply actions
2nd goal wasn’t on Carlson at all, totally agree. Vinny and the refs created that. 1st goal was a pretty bad play by Carlson, and 4th was a total CF. I’m not just talking about this game though – Carlson being bad is a recent trend.
Failure is always an option.
Orlov has to do something to someone or else Carlson has to cover both MSL and Stamkos and he is only one man. The first goal Carlson had Stamkos but Hammer gave Dowie way too much time and it was Matty P who had Purcell and let him go as Milbury actually correctly pointed out after the game. And the 2nd and 3rd goals

Scored on by some laziness and giving too much ice to TB. Carlson just has to get it into gear soon. I think he does.

The whole situation bothers me. If I understand the timing correctly, they signed him before practice yesterday, correct? So, here’s a thought, maybe they should have Rechlicz practice with the team on Monday without a contract and then they may have decided not to sign the contract.
As to deciding not to play him, the only reason I didn’t like it was in the context that he took up a roster spot and I don’t like the short bench this coaching staff uses. As to the specific player, I’m fine I didn’t have to watch him on the ice, esp. with a road game and TBL having last change.
If Erskine was dressing for the game, why not reward a Hershey player who has earned a recall with his play on the ice? Someone the coaching staff might be willing to play for more than 2 shifts.
Is there anyone on Hershey the Caps could have called up without putting them through waivers first? I’m just trying to see what GMGM might have been thinking.
Failure is always an option.
Who exactly? I don’t know who there falls under what waiver situation, and I know you’re well-informed there.
Failure is always an option.
Very few players have to clear re-entry waivers and the waiver clock requiring a player to clear waivers to get sent back down is 10 NHL games played or 30 days on the NHL roster.
I’d have to look at my notes, it’s late/I’m tired, but almost everyone in Hershey can be recalled without re-entry waivers; other than King. I think there might be one other player in that situation.
Are they allowed to call him up without having him under contract? I just assumed the paper was a necessity.
Pretty sure he could have practiced with the team if he was willing. See Orlov practicing with the team last year while not under contract. Believe Sloan did it at one point without a contract, too.
I remember discussion about who was the “mystery” guy at practice leading up to the 2008 playoffs. It was Sloan, brought to DC just in case they needed to sign him before the series started.

Are you discussing playing in a game or practicing with the team? Guess I have to research whether allowed to practice with the team; playing is a different situation.
Sloan was the player and it was the 07-08 playoffs; maybe it was because it was the playoffs? Orlov was on an ATO with Hershey. Pretty sure I’ve heard of it happening with other teams, but time for research; well tomorrow, I’m not digging around for info. tonight.

I’m gonna guess Downie doesn’t apologetically pat Perrault’s bottom after a bloody high stick if that 1:49 hadn’t happened.
Burning a contract is definitely worth a bum patting for MP85.

Now now…what would you rather have? ;)

Downie is the bum-patter whose photo is on everyone’s locker door.
Dingos are involved. Best not to ask.
Even though Dan Carcillo has the ’stache.

what sort of compromising stuff does Hunter have on GMGM that they keep calling these guys up and playing them for 2 minutes, when they have perfectly good bodies stuck in the press box?

Beagle could have done everything Recker did tonight, plus some. If Hunter played him, that is.
Failure is always an option.
I’ve jumped straight from honeymoon to “Can I get an annulment? PLEASE?”

Uh, except for have any menace about him whatsoever, or any threat that liberties would not be tolerated. That’s what Recker was here for, and I think it worked. Instead of dirty stickwork, they tripped us, interfered with us, and held us instead.
since the NHL has decided they’re not going to call tripping, holding, interference or much of anything else, the need to engage in the underhanded, dirty stick work that has marked the post-lockout years has dramatically decreased.

Erskine can do that just as much as Recker, and Hendricks is no slouch. No good reason there.
Failure is always an option.
I am simply talking about the rep Recker brings with him. We had Hendricks (and maybe Erskine?) in when Downie went after Karl Alzner for fuck’s sake! I am not saying Recker’s the answer, but Jay Beagle certainly isn’t either, and I don’t think this message they want to send on this trip, with most of our firepower out is a bad one.
I don’t really get the lamenting of the “wasted” roster spot. Does anyone think Beagle was going to do much more? What, precisely, is the issue? (Beyond burning a contract, that is.)
Knubs had good chance late. Just missed It. Needed that one.

Neil Greenberg @ngreenberg
#Caps outchance an opponent (5) for the first time since 12/31 vs CBJ (1). 11-game streak over.
Wooooo!
Not a bad game by the Caps. Couple keystone cops routines where they ran around in their own end, but overall they executed pretty well. It helps that Tampa is terrible, of course.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Caps without their top 3, playing against 9 guys on the ice……yeah, they played well. Minus John Carlson. Bloody awful.

I don’t think Carlson was anywhere near as bad as his -4 shows and Hammer was much worse today.

Ted Starkey @TedStarkey
Through 49 games, Caps have one fewer win than last year. Biggest difference is 5 less OTLs.
Caps also came on crazy strong post ASG last season. I just don’t have that same optimism for this year.

Speaking of TOI, RomHam rode the pine for the last 10 minutes of regulation and all of overtime.

He must have fallen at the bench and couldn’t get back up in time.

Are the benches painted blue? If so, you may be on to something.

Good. He was awful.

And Carlson?
I’m not a fan of playing 4 dmen; doesn’t help that they play again tomorrow night, too.
Knubs & Ward look old on the ice; hope I’m wrong.

If Hunts does nothing else before tomorrow tell the PP to shoot the damn puck. Not talented enough for tic)-tac-toe right now.
