Phew, I thought it was my set.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Its a problem when you try to use the talent mic as both the the feed to the broadcast and the feed to the stadium … there needs to be delay on the broadcast feed or else the echos from the arena feed back into the talent mics … thus making that horrid echo. It’s sorta like pointing a video camera into a tv set …

Damn, the AHL couldn’t spring for HD?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Guys, you know this is for the NHL All-Star Game at 4, right? Obviously feel free to chatter about the AHL skills until then (my parents are there, randomly), just wanted to make sure :)

Ah, Em made an executive decision without me I see :P The intention was for NHL, I think if they’re going at the same time it’ll be a bit confusing. Maybe at 4 someone can pop open a separate thread for those who want to keep watching AHL skills.

For those who care, per Whyno, Wideman will be skating alongside Phaneuf in today’s game. Poor Dennis.

Team Chara lines: Gaborik-Datsyuk-Hossa; Perry-Malkin-Iginla; Lupul-Seguin-Kessel; Benn-Kane-Eberle
Team Chara D pairs: Chara-Campbell; Phaneuf-Wideman; Timonen-Suter
Team Chara goalies: Howard (1st), Price (2nd), Thomas (3rd). Thomas is going for his fourth straight All-Star Game victory.

The intros are actually moving at a pretty fair clip. If they weren’t accompanied by the random guy (who just STANDS there when he’s not “singing”, this is hilarious) this would be pretty good.

Hi folks. Finally, this silliness will all be over soon! :)
What number is Wideman wearing? His 6, or something else?
It’s because of that stifling trap defense they play in the ASG.

According to HNIC: Team Chara has a cumulative total of 738 points so far this season. Team Alfie has 737 points.

I like Alfie, but then I am not much of a Leafs fan. My co-worker Leafs fan always calls Ottawa “Spezza and Meatballs”.
by Rather Bengt on Jan 29, 2012 4:40 PM EST up reply actions
I think it’s less of a Senators thing as it is a Alfredsson thing. I was a huge fan of Mats, and I really did not like Alfie’s little taunt. Even if Alfie wasn’t a Senator, I’m really not enamored of the guy.
I liked both Mats and Alfie, but since I didn’t have anything invested in either of their teams it made it easier.

Just because it looks like a Team Chara runaway, remember things can change along with the goalies. I can remember games where it looked like it would be a blowout and ended up close, maybe even a shootout.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
The funny thing is, if you ask me who I liked – Lundqvist or Jimmy Howard, I say the King, every time.
Plus, I really think Team Chara is better skilled.
Tim Thomas will be in net next period, I fully expect him to get lit up.

Yeah, Timmy gets the third.

Yeah, last year Team Staal scored the first four goals and Team Lidstrom responded with the next four.

They gave Spezza that goal that looked like Girardi’s, apparently. Must have tipped it. Or it’s an Ottawa conspiracy. ;)
As a Canadian, I worry about bigger conspiracies coming out of Ottawa than ASG goal attributions ;)

Ha, for once I’m happier with the NBC mic’d up choices…Iginla and Lundqvist > Lupul and Hartnell :P

I’m not sure, but I’m thinking they’re having different guys mic’d every so often. I wouldn’t mind getting to hear Price in-game :D
I actually enjoyed hearing Tim Thomas mic’ed up during the game last year. Marty Turco was the best at being mic’ed up in game at the ASG

Yeah, clearly never gonna happen. Because letting a stand-up guy have a great home-town moment while you still get the win is un-American, or something.
those Swedes playing in Canada are infringing on the rights of Timmy….

I don’t know. I just don’t think he has a responsibility to give them a home-town moment. What about all the other fans who would prefer to see the great save? I’m okay with it.
eh, his team is up 3 goals very late in the game. the all star game, a game that doesn’t matter.

It would be interesting to see what we would do if the ASG was ever in DC. Not that we’re likely to have to deal with that for some time, if ever.
Washington is winning the SE because of a “technically” my ass. Fuck you, Washington is winning the SE because they’re the best team in the southeast. What is so fucking hard to understand?

Having more wins and the same number of points actually tells me that Florida is tied because of a technicality as opposed to Washington winning it because of a technicality…but maybe that’s just me.
The definition of being a Caps fan is watching the same team over and over and expecting different results.
I know I’ve posted this several times in the last week, so I apologize if everyone is sick of it…..but if Washington had been able to convert just half of their regulation losses into OTLs, they’d be in the same conversation as NYR, BOS, and PHI.
which tells me OTLs mean jack shit.

Just rolled back the video, and it’s DOC who said by a technicality. I thought he loved us.

he loves the Bears. but as soon as you pull on that Caps sweater…DEAD!

Keith Jones on his most influential NHL teammate:
“Dale Hunter for sure at Washington,” said Jones about the most influential person during his playing career. “He was my linemate; taught me how to play the game and prepare for the game, how to contribute in any way possible to get the team to victory, how to be a good teammate.”

Are the commentators always this down on us, or is this a new thing this year? I’ve never watched this much ancillary hockey coverage before, so I don’t have a handle on it.
they tend to be very very very bipolar about the Caps. One moment gleefully telling the world that the Caps don’t play hockey the right way, the next bemoaning the death of “fun” hockey and how clutching and holding is sucking the fun out of the game and wasn’t hockey way more fun when the Caps played high flying craziness under Boudreau? Milbury has long been very negative, notoriously calling them the “Crapitals” during a 2008 playoffs broadcast, among other things. Jones has always been pretty negative, too. On the other hand, Barry Melrose LOVED the crazy fun Caps and never apologized for it.

what a stupid thing to say. Don’t they even look at Florida’s wins and losses?

In the negative analysis department on the Caps, Neil Greenberg statistical analysis seems to concur with Keith Jones’ opinion. Greenberg gives the Caps only a 1 in 3 chance of winning the division. I presume much of it is due to the Caps low percentage of shots and poor showing in the advanced stats department.
Then again, I wonder how sustainable Florida’s own play is, given that they’ve depended so much on Bettman points for their relatively lofty position in the standings.

so if they don’t figure out how to tilt the ice in their favor they most likely will be on the outside looking in come April.
I think Neil’s projection reflects the difficulties the Caps face, but as he notes, it’s still unclear who is likely to win the Southeast division. The question is whether the pattern of being outshot and outchanced will continue, and whether the team (apart from the goaltending) is becoming more responsible defensively. This wouldn’t be the first time the Caps have adapted to a new style after the beginning of January (although this year they have a new coach to go with the new style). I think we’ll have a better sense of the Caps prospects a few weeks from now – right now, it’s hard to tell.

The lineups were interesting. Even if Hartnall started off on the Sedin lines (and Alfredsson with his Senator teammates), eventually, Alfie joined with the twins (and it seemed that that particular line was on the ice for most of the third period — a little bench shortening going on.)
And then their was the Slovakian line (with Pavel Datsyik) that had Hossa and Gaborik. In the end, Chara was on the ice with that group when he scored.
Interesting that it was Kessel and Seguin on the line together, given that Kessel was traded for the draft pick that became Seguin.
