The Noon Number
16 - NHL All-Star Game appearances by Capitals defensemen. On Sunday, Dennis Wideman will make that 17 (and hopefully become the first Caps blueliner to score an All-Star Game goal); here are the seven Washington rearguards who have gone before him:
| Player | ASGP* | G | A | Pts |
| Rod Langway | 4 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| Sergei Gonchar | 3 | 0 | 3 | 3 |
| Kevin Hatcher | 3 | 0 | 3 | 3 |
| Scott Stevens | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| Al Iafrate | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Mike Green | 1 | 0 | 2 | 2 |
| Robert Picard | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
* Only All-Star games played as a Cap listed.

Remember...
…when Hatcher used to be considered a large player? Now he’d be above average…

Mike Green only having one ASG invite is an outrage.

if there ever was a shining (tarnished?) example of the NHL doesn’t have their shit together, it’s that.

Ehh…2010 was no ASG, 2011 he didn’t really deserve it, 2009 yeah (silly MTL voters), 2008 he only got hot under Boudreau IIRC. I view it as one snub, essentially, which is better than for, say, Backstrom.

Yeah, I was going to say one snub as well.

I had forgotten 2010 was an olympic year (whole different snub!)

True, he should have been picked for Canada, but it’s not like Canada did poorly in the Olympics without him…

Too bad you can’t take slapshots during the ASG…

There’s no rule against it. It’s just not done out of custom.

If you had told me last year, after Wideman’s injury, that he would be the next Cap D-Man to go the ASG, I would have said you were crazy. His story isn’t about to win the Masterton, but it’s still pretty good.
Alex Edler, who was the last defenseman drafted last night, also had a big recovery from a bad injury.
The Vancouver Canucks announced today that defenseman Alex Edler, who missed Wednesday’s game against the Nashville Predators due to back spasms, will undergo microdiscectomy surgery on his back and is out indefinitely.
From exactly one year ago this very day.

neither are fun, but I’ll take mircodiscetomy over compartment syndrome surgery every single time.
but congrats to both of them for not only coming back from serious injuries, but to come back and be all stars!

Everyone's a winner

So however many appearances, on avg, Caps D-men go home with something each time.
Rod Langway of course going home being ROD f’n LANGWAY
and Robert Picard going home as um, the first Caps D-man in the All-Star game…
No, I don't think I'll ever get over Macho Grande
I still remember watching the skills competition when Iafrate crushed that puck. The crowd pretty much gasped and the players all had a collective jaw drop…

How come...
… we don’t have a photoshop of this photo with the kittens that Wideman saved by beating the Penguins?

because the kitten photoshopper extraordinaire is being LAZY. He’s yet to follow through on either the Ovie saves Kittens or Knuble saves Kittens. Maybe he’ll come on tonight to defend himself.

Which DC sports team has the Most Valuable Players? That would be DC United, a team being pushed out by the city. Help Keep United in DC so they can receive a fair deal on a lease and help develop a path to build a stadium with local investment and incentives.
