Which DC sports team has the Most Valuable Players? That would be DC United, a team being pushed out by the city. Help Keep United in DC so they can receive a fair deal on a lease and help develop a path to build a stadium with local investment and incentives.

it’s all posturing at this point. Attendance has been trending up, they have a new TV deal and last year’s playoff set ratings records. Fehr just doesn’t want the NHLPA to get completely destroyed like they were last time around.
Yeah, I doubt there will be a lockout but the owners are definitely going to want more of the league revenue in return. I think the players will want to keep the cap floor in place, have the Olympics, some say in the Winter Classic/Heritage Classic and to be on a committee for some sort of player safety instead of having Shanahan and crew run discipline.
Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:
Leave me here, and when you want me, sound upon the bugle-horn
I’m not as confident that there will be no lockout or that it will be that simple.
I think Fehr has no fear of a work stoppage and is fully confident that he can win both the PR and the bargaining war.
He certainly won’t roll over for the League the way the players ended up doing last time ’round.
I do think Shanahan’s tenure as Czar of Punishment won’t last through the negotiations, which is humorous.

Yeah, but the thing with hockey is that there are fans like myself, who while we love watching the Caps play, would be just as content to go to their local ice rinks and play hockey themselves. The lockout lost me as a fan last time, it took me until my son started to show a love for the game for me to actually start watching again.

I found Fehr’s responses to be measured and non-confrontational. It is all posturing and positioning at this point, but the man isn’t going to negotiate against air, either. He hasn’t seen (or hasn’t revealed) a proposal from the league for the next CBA. What in his answers gives anyone pause to think next season will be a washout or delayed?

I too thought he was pretty fair, and on-the-level.
If I’m the PA, I’m approaching carefully. Hockey Related Revenues have grown so substantially, and you have to figure that’s due in part to the parity in the league. Obviously, the owners will want the Players’ share of revenues to decrease, and the Cap floor reduced to reduce the burden on lower budget teams. If I’m the PA, I might be willing to concede a reduction in the percentage of HRR, but only to the extent that the Owners adopt a revenue sharing plan where more money is going to the lower revenue clubs.
I think that could be sold to both the players and the owners. If it helps increase revenue in the mid and long term, both the Players and the Owners end up better off.
I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.

Do you have any specific rebuttals or insights? I specifically think he is playing coy when he talks about “main issues” and how it’s just a range of issues and you don’t know how it’ll play out. I’m pretty sure that in an honest moment he could peg the top 2-3 issues in the next CBA with 95% certainty. I’m not blaming him, it’s how the game works, just my interpretation of the situation. There’s also a lot of self-serving, PR-type stuff woven throughout. Again, it’s how the negotiation game works.
Please, call me F&B.
Agree. I found his responses very careful and calculated. He’s preparing the ground for his negotiation with the League. Frankly, given his skill and pedigree I would be surprised if he did anything different.
I just think he’s playing a completely different ballgame than the NHL has ever engaged in, and I see plenty of potential for it to get ugly. Bettman is going to get his lunch handed to him unless he focuses right up.
Patron saint of quality footwear.

That ASG Draft was kind of a dud, huh?
I just thought they missed with all the “tweaks”. Replacing the players up front with a bunch of screaming Ottawa yokels was not a good idea. Between the “Leafs Suck!” and the “Overrated’s” and the continued booing of Joffrey Lupul (not to mention the jokesters in the crowd who kept thinking it would be funny to yell out random names), it just became so difficult to follow and was just saturated with so much obnoxiousness that I quickly tired of the whole business.
They’re so determined to avoid another Kessel Incident (and by the way, it seems like the person who was least disturbed about the whole thing was Kessel himself, as he’s pretty much been “whatever it was fun” in every interview I’ve seen, and dude got a car, c’mon) that they turned a pretty good idea into an unwatchable mess.

Of course, he’s not the only guy to back out who is healthy enough to play…
The definition of being a Caps fan is watching the same team over and over and expecting different results.
I thought it was a smart way for Chara not to be seen picking one over the other on playing skills, making Couture’s last man status seem less inferior.

It didn’t take long, but the whole “pick-a-team” concept novelty has worn off for me. Last year, it was intriguing. This year, it just makes the “game” part of the weekend more of a joke than it is. I guess it’s fun for the players, but as a fan, I have zero interest in this game. Part of being a fan is having a rooting interest — East versus West, North America versus Europe. I’m supposed to root for Chara or Alfredsson? Or is it just a game for the “ooooooh” factor of individual offensive moves?
God, I’m getting grumpy in my old age.

I must be the only person on earth who thinks the fantasy all star draft is far and away the best idea that has ever been dreamed up in any all star event in any sport. By contrast I always thought the NA vs the world format was possibly the worst idea in all of sports. I personally enjoy seeing weird pairings and guys goofing off during the game. Trying to somehow inject rivalry into an all star game doesn’t work.
Hockey especially needs personalities. The players seem to do everything they can to hide any personality whatsoever most of the time on camera that they need events like this. Sure it is painful watching Kessel mentally running to hide from the camera or Couture mumbling his way through a couple stock non-answers but it is great seeing things like the awe players had of Lidstrom last year or how teammates will mess with each other like Kane with Toews. This year was more boring but the event and concept is a huge winner in my book.
PS – Yeah the Ottawa fans needed to shut up when guys at the podium were about to speak but I love the booing of Lupul, it made the event memorable in a fun way. This was about fans interacting with the players which is the core of the all star celebration isn’t it?
Maybe next year they can draw names out of a hat, make it random. Have a hat for forwards, defensemen, and goalies. Make it really random: throw all names into one hat and whatever assortment the captains draw is the team they and the coaches have to work with.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
The best part of the draft was when Henrik Sedin said that last year’s All Star Game (when the Sedins were on different teams) was great because he finally got a chance to play with good players. Other than that, yeah, it was largely lame.

Maybe not. It only looked at one horse. The Caps aren’t Secretariat, by any means, but they’re also running against Mr. Ed and My Little Pony, too — Florida and Winnipeg. I would agree that only one of these three will make the playoffs, but I suspect the Caps will have to play worse than they have the last month not to be that team. They could miss out, depending on their goaltending, and whether this lack of offensive pressure is a learning curve thing or they’re just not very good (or deep). But those other two teams have been relatively healthy and have (in Florida’s case) benefitted more than one would expect from extra time points.

Winnipeg is 6-13-4 in games played east of the Mississippi this season. They have 12 more after the All Star Game break. I’m not thinking their record will improve. Only one team has played more extra time games than Florida (Los Angeles), but seven teams have more points. It’s not that Florida wins those games, it is that they get to them in the first place. Is that their formula? Play for overtime?
If you've read this far...seek help.

The Caps have been b-a-d by the fancystats for a while now. Nothing surprising here.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Here’s the team, score-tied at even-strength, under Hunter.
There’s a lot there (including a ton of unsustainable individual performances), but here’s the bottom line: their Fenwick percentage is 48% and the save percentage .939. If the SV% slips below spectacular, the possession number really isn’t there to cover up for it. The margin for error is slim right now (though would be a bit better if they could figure out their special teams on the road).
FWIW, here are the same stats, score-close at ES. Even worse possession and a lower SV% (and Sh%).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Wow, Brooks Laich has gotten boned. Conversely, Mojo is living in a great pasture.
Anyway, those numbers in aggregate are ugly. When the goaltending returns to earth, there’ll be trouble, unless we can expect an upswing in the possession numbers.
I personally don’t think we can, as Hunter seems firmly committed to the coin flip strategy.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Yeah, those two players were the biggest “due for a turnaround” candidates I could see.
When the goaltending returns to earth, there’ll be trouble, unless we can expect an upswing in the possession numbers.
I don’t see any reason to expect it. Best bet, it would seem, is getting the road special teams to look like the home special teams.
And we call it coin-flips… but right now, the coin is weighted.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
You know I agree on the last point.
Regarding the road special teams, I seem to recall the shots-for and -against rates are actually marginally better on the road, so I do expect better results there.
Bottom line is that I expect a dogfight with FLA for the division, in a ‘worst team loses’ sense of the term.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Also, it’s not just a “They miss Nicky” problem – over the last seven games he played, the score-close ES Fenwick % was 47%.

PDO = On Ice ES shooting % + On Ice ES Save %, if I remember my stats correctly.
Failure is always an option.
Yep. PDO doesn’t really have any logical basis. It’s just a quick and dirty way to see whose numbers are better than they probably should be. A guy like Crosby may be able to sustain a 1020 or higher (his on-ice shooting% is regularly over 10%) but more marginal (i.e. most) players, for obvious reasons, have a “true talent” pretty close to 1000.

A reminder that they're ALL very, very young
“As soon as there was a TV timeout, it was just like during a game: You had about 2 and a half minutes to get the job done and get back to your seats and pretend like nothing happened. It was pretty funny,” said Hartnell.
The word after the Draft, however, was that Team Chara’s Joffrey Lupul used his assistant captaincy to cut the line for the bathroom, specifically in front of his old Flyers teammate Hartnell.
Hartnell denied Lupul pulled rank to get into the men’s room. Because … well …
“Let’s just say we shared the same bathroom at one time. He had to get out there quick. Everyone likes to play swords I guess,” he said, with a laugh.
“I don’t know if I can say that or not. I don’t know if he’ll be embarrassed or not.”
OK, so did the co-mingling in the facilities take place?
“That may be true,” said Lupul, a forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs. "It was a mad scramble, and I’m not exactly sure what happened. Uh … uh … it’s probably something I didn’t want people to find out.

The draft started out with Chara, Alfredsson, and host James Duthie having a quick meet-and-greet, as Senators fans in attendance made their first appearance in their role as the most annoying entity of all time. It’d be funny to boo Joffrey Lupul like once or twice and get a laugh. But, no, they had to show their disdain for Lupul every time he opened his mouth. Then they wouldn’t shut up even as they saw the captains about to announce their next pick. And to top it off, wise guys felt they had to time the silence right in order to yell out a one-liner they’ve been practicing for 2 days. Sucks.

Will be pleasantly surprised if they win any of those games. Detroit doesn’t lose at home (and boy, will they be fired up after we embarassed them earlier this season), WPG’s 7 over .500 at home, and Chicago’s good at home too. Isles are .500 and Philly’s less that impressive, but those are still really loseable games, especially how badly the Caps sucked against NYI last time they played.

probably not. I honestly think it will be a moot point though because we should win the SE so hitting that specific point total isn’t that important. I think Fla fades down the stretch and Wpg is already 5 pts back and we still have 2 games in hand. If we can win the 3 games against Fla in Feb. I think that ends it for them.

If they go 0-3 on that Chicago-Detroit-Philly gauntlet, I’m not so sure they win 6 out of the last 8.
Cross check and all call.

Not to piss in your Cheerios, but the Caps aren’t going to convert on 70% (note: mild hyperbole alert) of their scoring chances like they did on the Boston game.
It’s nice that they beat Boston, but they had a bunch of luck to do it.
The thing about luck is that eventually it runs out.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
The 92-93 point cutoff isn’t as important as it might sound. The Caps could make the playoffs with fewer points depending on how the other Southeast teams are playing. If they win the division, then the other points, while nice, aren’t as important.
Of the teams in the division:
5th – Carolina – 45 points, 10 points back, 3 fewer games remaining. The Canes are playing well, but the hole they are in is probably too deep. Plus they rely on picking up charity points (9 of them) too much. I suspect they will be selling at the trade deadline, so they’re not a factor in the division except as a spoiler.
4th – Tampa Bay – 46 points, 9 points back, same number of games remaining. The Bolts are also quite a bit far back and have quite a mountain to climb. If they come out from the break hot and put together a run, they may stand pat or add a player at the deadline. If they come out flat after the break, they’ll be sellers and a non-factor.
3rd – Winnipeg – 50 points, 5 points back, two fewer games remaining. The Jets have improved a bunch now that they have an organization willing to support them, and full crowds every night. Still, I don’t see how this team keeps up their pace with the line-up they have. A successful rebirth of hockey in the Great White North, but they’re not a contender for the division title.
2nd – Florida – 55 points, 0 points back, same number of games remaining. The Kitties have been playing well most of the year, but at the break they began to tail off a bit. The Caps have caught them and have a tremendous edge in the tie-breakers (11 charity points already for Florida!) I honestly can’t see the Panthers keeping up their present pace, although a playoff berth might not be out of the question.
1st – Washington. As long as the Caps keep pace with the Panthers, they will be in the playoffs. I have a feeling that going down the stretch with about 18 wins will be enough to win the division, assuming they pick up 4 charity points on the way, that’s 40 points, meaning 95 for the year. That’ll win the division with a final record of 44-31-7. Very do-able.

That cutoff only matters if you are an at-large team (not a division winner). All the Caps have to do to make the playoffs is beat Florida and Winnipeg.

I wrote this in the Road Ahead post a few days back and thought I’d put it up again.
The Caps currently have a .391 win percentage on the road and a .708 at home.
Your figures are very optimistic with the Caps becoming a .556 road team and .812 at home. I don’t see either happening.
JP was looking at .500 on the road as being something to shoot for.
Here’s how it breaks down:
If the Caps don’t improve on the road, the Caps can’t lose more than 3 games at home. The current road win percentage will get them 14 pts. Combined with the current record of 55 pts they need 24 pts at home to hit the threshold of 93 pts. With 16 home games left, they need to win 12 of them. And 7 of those are against current playoff teams (two against the Panthers and one each against the Bruins, Flyers, Devils, Leafs, and the Sharks). That’s a tall order.
They get a little more breathing room if the play on the road improves to .500, which means they can lose 6 games at home. If the play at home drops off, forget it.
The Caps could capture the SE from FLA, especially if they fall apart. But hoping for another team to collapse doesn’t bode well for playoff success.
by Gin and Tonic on Jan 27, 2012 11:03 AM EST up reply actions
FLA is 22-26. They don’t need to fall apart — they’re already not a very good team. Frankly, I view another SE division crown as an afterthought even if the Caps play barely above .500 hockey the rest of the way out. The division is that bad.

Not so fast...
It will be very tight down to the wire. Tiebreakers do not favor the Cats, for sure. If each contending team amasses points at the same rate/game they do now:
WAS: 34 games remaining x 1.146 points/game + 55 points = 93.96 points ~94
OTT: 94
TOR: 92
NJD: 94
FLA: 94
(The ’Peg is totally screwed I think at this point, they could get hot, but I doubt it)
Depends on who gets hot. If WAS improves their road record, they should win the SE fairly easily, I feel. But that’s a BIG if.
TOR will have the hardest time sustaining, a lot of the Canadian writers favor TOR getting in (no surprise to keep viewers). I think OTT is cooling off, having lost 3 straight.
ANy of these teams could should themselves in the foot, and yes, I mean WAS too.
One of these 5 will not make it. But who?
by S h a g g y on Jan 27, 2012 11:50 AM EST up reply actions
I don’t think FLA keeps pace. there’s no way they take another 11 games to OT down the stretch and without those points they are not even in the conversation.
by Beakers Lab on Jan 27, 2012 11:53 AM EST up reply actions
The Panthers have lost 11 of their last 15, including games taken to OT.
They are 4-11 in OT. Let that sink in. That is horrid.
One wouldnt favor them down the stretch.
by S h a g g y on Jan 27, 2012 12:00 PM EST up reply actions
I just don’t think there’s a chance that a team with 19 regulation/OT wins in 48 games has any shot at the playoffs. Things will even out.

OK, not giving them a chance is a bit extreme in a league where 8 of 15 teams go to the playoffs, but I would definitely bet the under on an 8 seed for them.
Capitals goal scored by #22, Mike...
by KNUUUUUUUUUUBLE on Jan 27, 2012 12:22 PM EST up reply actions
That’s good, because the Caps play barely above .500 already.
Even if FLA is a bad team, they are still one that gets to OT a lot. Unless the Caps are tied with them at the end, the fact that the Caps have more wins won’t matter. If FLA keeps collecting loser points they could finish ahead of the Caps – even with a losing record. Unless I’m completing reading the seeding rules wrong.
by Gin and Tonic on Jan 27, 2012 12:03 PM EST up reply actions
The Caps have 25 ROWs, which is good for 4th place in the East by a full 3 ROWs over Pittsburgh. And they’re only 1 ROW behind #2 seed Boston.
Not denying that the team has issues, but in terms of actual wins and losses, the Caps are right up there with the best and far ahead of teams like FLA.

If only ROWs were the only ones that counted. Hooray loser point!
by Gin and Tonic on Jan 27, 2012 2:07 PM EST up reply actions
The problem the Caps seem to have is that they win plenty, but when they lose, they usually lose in regulation. Part of that is winning the games in OT.

I feel like they’re aren’t even getting very many games to OT, win or lose.
but, basically, if the Caps had “just” gotten half of those regulations losses to OT, we’d be discussing them as running with NYR/Boston?Philly.

Only 9 OTs for the Caps. And they won 6 of those and only one of those was a SO win.
2 SO losses to NJ and the OTL to PIT.
The Panthers have more OT losses than the Caps have OTs total.

I fully admit I fall clearly on the optimist side of things and am unapologetic about it. the realist in me says they will probably finish right around that 19-15 they need to get the 92/93 points but l don’t think that will matter as they should win the SE handily.
