The Noon Number
9,556,785 - Combined paid attendance for every NHL game (regular season and playoffs) in which Alex Ovechkin has played. (So if 20,000 or so can't see him this weekend in Ottawa... big deal.)

wait wait wait, are you trying to imply Ovechkin helps the league sell tickets as much as the league helps him earn a salary? That seems like a very two sided argument and I’m not sure I like it.

Heh. I actually wasn’t even thinking of it that way. More that I just don’t get fired up about the “think about the fans!!!” part of the ASG-related argument that’s going on.

“fans.” Yeah yeah yeah, it’s Ottawa so the 20,000 corporate lackeys who got seats are more likely to be hockey fans than the corporate lackeys in Raleigh, but it’s not like some little child in Ottawa who has never seen an NHL game in person is missing out on seeing Ovie this weekend.

Calculator? What’s that?
Also, the first draft had a word in between “big” and “deal” that was subsequently removed per Becca’s suggestion.

The only people complaining about Ovi not being there don’t count as “paid attendance”.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
Sure they do. They get paid to be there.

Not all of them. And so do the players, but they don’t count either.

If you’re collecting an annual salary and you’re there to report on it, you’re being paid to be there. Now, if you’re referring to a blogger who doesn’t work for one of the big-name sites who’s paying his/her own way to be there, okay.
No, it’s not “paid attendance” as gate receipts go, but I stand by my position.

… which was the initial contention – the people complaining about Ovi not being there don’t count as “paid attendance.”
They are, however, paid attendants. Not sure why the point is being argued, though – one group pays to be there, the other is paid to be there.

From sk84fun_dc in the Clips
"The NHL All-Star Game has sold out annually with priority given to the league’s corporate sponsors, and the host city’s team sponsors, suite holders and season ticket holders. As such, it is unlikely that any individual tickets will go on sale to the general public. The best way to gain priority to access All-Star Weekend tickets is the purchase of a season ticket package by October 31, 2010. A waiting list will be compiled,…"

Essentially, if you’re into at least your second season as a STH, you can get tickets. Not particularly any different than tickets to the Winter Classic, unless I’m reading wrong.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
This is what Ted has been talking about regarding All-Star games, WInter Classics, drafts etc. It’s an NHL thing and the last people to be accomodated will be STH’s. I’m wondering how many of those new STH’s will get tickets. My guess, very few.
I remember going to the 82 ASG at the Cap Centre and sitting in the same seats we had for the Caps games. Guaranty that would never happen if the ASG came back to town.

And when that WC comes to Nationals Park in 2014 (or whenever), there will be almost no tickets available for STH’s, not in a facility that seats 20,000 fewer than the facility in Pittsburgh that a lot of Caps STH’s attended. That 20,000 comes off the garden variety fan population.
If you've read this far...seek help.
it’s going to be general public and the opposing team’s STH that really get the short end of things.
I assume Rangers STH were not assured seats for 2012 WC? Not sure how they’ll work in with Toronto next year which such a huge venue. Seems like the Caps were pretty determined to extract every concession out of the NHL for 2011 (not that I entirely blame them) because they had leverage that the other visiting teams didn’t have.
Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$1210.35!
I agree that Caps STH’s will get tickets. I feel like we already had the cost discussion, but I never saw what the prices were for Philly. I assume they’ll be higher than they were at Heinz, so that they can collect the same dollars for less seats.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
That’s a possibility, depending on how the tickets are parceled. For the 2012 WC in Philadelphia, the Flyers were allotted about 19,000 tickets. That’s not to say 19,000 tickets had to go to Flyer STH’s, but rather that is the population of tickets the Flyers had to allocated. They did have sufficient tickets to cover their full STH population and some partial holders. But if it was done here they way it was done in Philly, you will be buying the whole package — WC game, alumni game, and AHL game.
If you've read this far...seek help.
That’s a lot of coin, but I wouldn’t bitch about it.
I got the feeling there’s a lot less following of the Phantoms in Philly than of the Bears in DC, but that may only be because I hang out with people who follow the Bears.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Nah, the Phantoms had a very very strong local fanbase before the move to Adirondack. I don’t think many STHs were happy about the combo purchase, but reality is the majority of the cost was the main event anyway, given the individual ticket pricing for the other two events this year.
Peerless, like others, I think the Caps will find away to accommodate Full STHs, but there won’t be the extra presales, etc., available the way things happened with a football venue in Pittsburgh.
We went to the AHL WC, and there were a LOT more Phantoms fans than Bears fans. We were seriously outnumbered, which was a big surprise considering Hershey is not far from Philly…

Friday night, affordable pricing to go to an outdoor event and see the venue, nice weather, affordable to bring a family, etc.
Plus as noted above Flyers STHs had to buy the 3 games, some who bought the tickets may have used or given the AHL tickets to family and friends.
Phantoms had a very strong fanbase, appealed to local families, when they played at the Spectrum. I believe there were also a couple of buses of fans from Adirondack that made the trip.
Thanks didn’t make it over here before now.
It’s the way it has been for years; it’s a League event focused on sponsors. The last few years, they have done more around the event to involve fans, but while some fans can secure tickets through fan clubs and re-sellers, the best seats and first dibs go to sponsors.
For an example in a market where the season ticket holder base wasn’t as large, in Atlanta a few years ago, I was on a waitlist to buy tickets for the ASG. The only way possible through official channels was if I bought a mini-plan (I think it was a pair of tickets to 3 or 4 regular season games); IIRC, if I had done that I could have purchased ASG tickets, but it’s not a single game buy a ticket as a fan oriented event.
In fairness, to the extent you have enough tickets, you do want to give priority to the people who pay to be at the games all year long.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
If I implied it wasn’t fair, I didn’t mean to do so.
My issue about this topic as it has been for awhile and in particular the last few days – This event is a League event for corporate sponsors at the League and local level, it’s not for the fans, not even really for the fans of the host team. Yes, I do think the host team’s STHs should be given some level of priority when an event like this is held.
But…but…but Ovie hasn’t been in Ottawa since December 7, 2011. The fans have been deprived of his presence for nearly two months!!!!!

I love the color scheme they went to after the blue/white/black/bronze – such an original and unique look for the team (though the third jerseys are a little too similar – should’ve gone with a throwback like the screaming eagle logo).
Also, where the fuck did they find this coach? Did he ever play?

Oddly enough, I had posted my FB status the morning before the game as “Going back to April 2004”, in the days before we had Ovi, Schultz, and Green, our 1st round draftees, all to be sitting out that night. (Not to mention Nicky B, who was also out.)
And the fact that Semin, Halpern, and Laich were on the Caps roster then. (Or had the Caps sent Laich down to the minors immediately?)

Compare that number up there with the fact the total paid attendance in DC for every game Dennis Maruk played here was, I believe, 138.

Hey, it was at least 686 for the 343 games he played here when we had 2 STs. C’mon, man get you stats right!
It's all wrong, but it's all right.
Andy McDonald still doesn’t get it
“I think it’s disappointing for the fans,” said McDonald, when reached by the Post-Dispatch. “The all-star game is about the fans, a chance for them to see the league’s best players showcase their skills. He’s one of the premier players in the league. There will be a lot of disappointed fans not to see that at the all-star game and the skills competition.”

Average attendance
So take the total attendance divided by games played (559), and 17,096 is the average number of tickets sold per appearance. That is about 85% or so for % of arena capacity.
Even playing Southeast Division foes so frequently, w/ their lower attendance numbers, I don’t think any other team or player has played to a higher arena capacity % since he came into the league.
