What are the odds that today, as Esa Tikkanen is serving guests birthday cake, he cuts off a piece, picks up a plate, goes to place the slice of cake on the plate…
…and misses?

Corvo in the house last night, Tik’s birthday today. A Jagr away from a JP hate-trick.

Good call by you (though swap in Cookie on Sunday for Jagr and we’re there).

I actually had no problem with Cooke during his time here. Anyone who can make Vinny cry is ok with me. Jagr, however, is front and center on my Caps Mt. Douchemore.

Yeah I was looking for a highlight of the hit, but just settled on Coach’s Corner about Cooke. That was toward the back of at least 10 different incidents, most involving knees. Hideous stuff.

If I recall, it was what commonly gets called “finishing your check”, which is code for “hitting them after the puck is gone”?

And I get the exasperation, but that would have given the Caps, what, 6 goals in that game? If the Caps had 6, the Wings just would have scored 7.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Especially given that the Wings won the series 4-0… Never really understood why Esa seems to shoulder the entire blame for a series we didn’t ever really have a chance in.
But then, I was only 7 at the time, so what do I know?

Yeah, it would have. But the Wings had the Caps completely outclassed in that series. I just don’t see Tik’s goal as the GWG if it goes in.

Heh. My memory sucks, but here goes…
Olie and Bonzai would be long shots. Oates was on that team, wasn’t he?
The Wings had, what, Feds, Larionov, Yzerman, Murphy, Lidstrom…I’m missing a couple I think.
Anyway, yes, the Wings were truly stacked and the Caps had gotten a bit hot and a bit lucky and were cannon fodder. The run to the Cup was glorious, though. Other than Riggo’s TD run, defintely the happiest sports moments I’ve had.

Shanny, wow, forgot about him.
Also Hunter for the Caps, duh. Another long shot.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
Very good for a long time but only dominant for 2-3 years.
Hunter even more so on the first part, never a dominant force.
I have to confess I’m unsure of how hockey handles the HOF. The NFL lets in basically everyone who had a good career; MLB has much tougher standards.
Under the NFL approach, Olie, Bondra and Hunter get in. Under the MLB approach, they don’t.
I consider Oates a lock and the other three to be marginal candidates.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
With Bondra it is a simple case for me: How many 500 goal scorers are not in the HoF (or won’t be as soon as they are eligible, Teemu)?
Please, call me F&B.
How many is it?
And I had forgotten that Bondra got to 500. Wasn’t it something like 502?
Patron saint of quality footwear.
503 for him. It looks like there is a handful of guys that aren’t in the HoF and aren’t locks (Turgeon, Verbeek, Andreychuk). I assume Roenick and Sundin get in but maybe not.
Please, call me F&B.
Yeah, I googled it. Andreychuk I would have to think gets in. 600+ has gotta be good for something. Same with Tkachuk, imagine he makes it.
The other two I’m thinking are longer shots.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
And he scored it as a Blackhawk. Remember those great Bondra Blackhawk years. Almost as exciting as his Thrashers era.
by Rather Bengt on Jan 25, 2012 12:53 PM EST up reply actions
If you adjust for era, it is close to 550.
10 guys are above Bondra on that list and not in the HoF, but you have to think that almost all (if not all) of those 10 will end in the hall of fame. Tkatchuk is the one who I am most wishy-washy on, but he had the same dead puck era issues that bondra had I think
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a (select) start
Oh, and Recchi. I’m not convinced he is HoF worthy either, but I can definitely be educated otherwise
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a (select) start
? Adam Oates and his 1420 points say hello. (yes, 1420<1500) and his points per game stat say hello, too.
Yes, Recchi has his name on the SC.
Those 10, btw, are Jagr, Selanne, Shanahan, Sakic, Andreychuck, Sundin, Recchi, Tkachuk, Modano, and Iginla.
The next 5 non HoF on that list after Bondra are Turgeon, Roenick, Fedorov, Verbeek, and Mogilny.
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a (select) start
Yeah, just went to look. Of that group, gotta figure Selanne, Sakic, Shanahan and Modano are locks. Guessing Jagr (vomit) might go. Thoughts on the rest?

Red Wings from 1998 who will be or are Hall of Fame players: Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, Igor Larionov, Sergei Fedorov, Nick Lidstrom, Larry Murphy, Slava Fetisov. And don’t forget hall of fame coach Scotty Bowman.
Caps from 1998 who will be or are Hall of Fame players: Adam Oates (maybe), Peter Bondra (maybe), Olie Kolzig (maybe)…
Even if the Caps win game 2, it’s likely all that would have changed was that the series result would have been 4-1 Wings.

Oates was never the best player on the team he was on, he started in Detroit (Yzerman) then St. Louis (Hull), Boston (Bourque), Washington (Bondra), Philly (Lindros), Anaheim (Kariya) and by the time he got to Edmonton, he was a 2nd/3rd line guy. He also managed to alienate himself to the management and ownership or pretty much every team he played for…

I’m looking at Holmstrom’s numbers, and man, I always thought that guy was better than he actually was. His career high in goals is only 30, and his career high in points is only 59. He’s like the Swedish Jordan Staal.
Of course, he was also a 10th round draft pick in 94. Do they even have the 10th round any more?

More like homeless man’s Andreychuk.
He only had three seasons where he DIDN’T drop 20. Two 50s, three 40s, 5 30s. Three 90+ point seasons.
Has he been up for the HOF yet? I would think that 640/698/1338 in 1639 , and the all-time leader in PPGs would be enough to get him in.

The difference is in the eras, though. Andreychuk’s best years were in the high flying late 80s/early 90s. He’s still a much better player than Holsmstrom, but if he had to play the majority of his career in the clutch and grab 90s and 00s, his numbers would be much lower.
Look, I love Dave Andreychuk. He just benefited a lot from when he played.
So did Grant Fuhr ;)
DA’s best seasons were 91-92 through 93-94. But even in the trappity-trap-trap era of the mid-90s, he was still putting up close to 30 and 60 points every year. And he was still really productive in Tampa his last three years, dropping 21/18/39 at age 40 and 14 points in 23 games in the playoffs (with one goal!). Even looking at his “adjusted” stats on Hockey Ref, 605/645/1250 should still be enough to get him in.

Not sure where this fits in to this thread, but it is related. I always thought that a win in that game (which gives the Caps at least one win in the series) would have gotten Olie the Conn Smyth. I don’t recall much of that series (I was only 15 and was really just watching as a fan of the Caps, not a fan of the game, per se), but I do recall that Olie stood on his freakin head quite a bit in the earlier rounds.
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a (select) start
Olie out-dueled Dominik Hasek at his very best. Really, that ECF series might be one of the best goalie duels.

Speaking of Corvo, that second round pick we traded for him sure went around the circuit:
The Washington Capitals’ second-round pick went to the Calgary Flames as the result of a trade on June 1, 2011 that sent Tim Erixon and a fifth-round pick in 2011 to the New York Rangers in exchange for Roman Horak, the 45th overall pick and this pick.26
New York previously acquired the pick as the result of a trade on June 26, 2010 that sent Bobby Sanguinetti to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a sixth-round pick in 2010 and this pick.35
Carolina previously acquired the pick as the result of a trade on March 3, 2010 that sent Joe Corvo to Washington in exchange for Brian Pothier, Oskar Osala and this pick.36
Calgary took Tyler Wotherspoon of the Portland Winterhawks with that pick.

He was a total pro about it, too. Some people thought Ovi was being immature or not as a captain should behave, but I don’t see anywhere in the CBA that captains can’t play practical jokes…the bench boss was quite the joker in his day as well.

I think it showed Ovi’s character that he, while suspended and forced to the press box during the game, came down to celebrate his teammate’s success with obvious joy.

His co-host said something like “how about Ovi being a leader, coming down and dishing the pie” and May said something like “if you want to call it that”. Kypreos on Ovi not being at the ASG
Not a bad article at all. I’m struck by how he says, sort of near the end, “No one can call Ovi selfish”. I like seeing someone, besides us, say that. Especially after reading a bunch of other people calling Ovi all sorts of nasty things, including ‘selfish’.
There's always more to learn about Hockey.
Elliotte Friedman's opinion
A suspended player shouldn’t be forced to go to the All-Star Game. If Ovechkin doesn’t want to attend, he shouldn’t. Better that than being unhappy at what’s supposed to be a showcase weekend. Besides, there is no doubt in my mind someone would have ripped the NHL for allowing someone under suspension to dress.
That'll make your weagle wink!

Of course. It was a no-win decision, so he did what was right for him.
Also, Kypreos’s main point (or one of them) was my point yesterday – the League should’ve bit the bullet and taken the decision out of Ovi’s hands and uninvited him or made him ineligible to participate, which would have at least deflected the shitstorm off their “face of the League.” But no, they had to make him the bad guy.
Suspended players should not be allowed to play. As Kyper’s hypothesized, what if this was a 10-game ban (for something far worse) and Michalek was out? Would Ovi still have been given the choice? Hard to imagine he would (or should). So why now?

Bad guys sell too. With Pronger’s career on its last legs maybe they are just trying to cultivate their next villain.
Please, call me F&B.
I think that’s more media- than League-driven narrative. To wit, how many major endorsement deals does Pronger have?
Media loves villains. League loves storylines, but they’d prefer their best players be marketable in a positive light.

Failure is always an option.
There was last year. He centered Semin on his first hat trick of the season (vs. Thrashers), assisting on two of the goals. Then against the Leafs in Dec, Perry got 2 goals, and Sasha tried desperately to give him the hat trick, but to no avail; brutal because the Leafs came back from a 3-1 deficit and won in the SO. If only Sasha wasn’t so selfless.

Serious question -
Great win last night, but what was truly different about it from some of the games that preceded it (not including the turd in Carolina) other than the number of pucks going in and staying out?

It seemed to me that the effort didn’t let up. I never felt there was a lull where I felt the energy undertowing out to the horizon, sucking a potential win with it.
There's always more to learn about Hockey.
I thought they started out without much energy at all, and they did get badly outplayed once Perreault gave them the 4-3 lead. In fact, other than a bit of a spike right around that goal, I thought they struggled to generate much offensively (and were outplayed) after about the midpoint of the game.

They pulled together again after that.
For most of the first period they looked like they didn’t know how to get out of their zone or how to get past the Bruins, then slowly thinkg started coming together late in the 1st. The Boston goal didn’t look like it got them down much and they came back with more energy and drive in the 2nd. Once Eakin scored, it gave them hope that that it wouldn’t be a beat down. Then Matty scored and they gained more confidence and solidarity.
They rebounded from flubs, got more physical, and decided to put up a fight.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
Mmm… not so sure about that. First ten minutes were terrible (about what I expected from the whole game, though; pleasant surprise there). Second, beyond the goals, wasn’t too good, either. Scoring chances, per end of period summary, were 8-3 in Boston’s favor for the period.
So yeah, the difference is that they scored on 100% of their scoring chances.
Geeks of All Nations, Compile!

Further to my point, the Fenwick timeline:
Offensively: slow start, good stuff from ~10-30, then fairly flatline with one spike.
Defensively: pwnd very early and again from ~30 on.

Even with more shots/zone time I never felt that Boston had a ton of high quality chances. They did have several that Vokoun did stop, no question, but the majority of their shots were from the outside. Take away the Alzner own goal, which I don’t think Boston scores on that play if he doesn’t do that, and it’s really not that bad. Of course I’d still like for us to be getting 27-30 Shots/game but I guess the boys just want to drive up their shooting %.

Looked to me like they were simply trying to play not to lose, which I completely expected at that point. When this team tries to play keepaway, that’s when some bad turnover happens.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
The fact that they got outplayed after the goal is no shock. This is a team that is going to try to lock it down and hold on to a 1 goal lead if they ever have one in the third. I don’t like that strategy but that’s what they are doing so part of being dominated after they took the late lead was by design.
Please, call me F&B.
Agreed, but they do seem to take it to an extreme. Can’t completely go in a shell (and, if you do, it had better be a damn good shell).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Yep. You know I’m very skeptical about the new system and have serious concerns about their decision to go into that shell.
Please, call me F&B.
If it wasn’t the new system, I’d be less worried about that behavior last night. I would expect a team that is undermanned (by some definitions) to turtle a bit and try to hold a lead against a team that, on paper, should be pasting them. But when the Caps are at full(-ish) strength, there really are not many excuses for trying to barely hold on.

One long lull that I can recall, but other than that as I expected, everyone showed up, which was nice to see. In terms of execution, not much was different from most of the players.
In particular, Carlson’s play continues to be painful to watch.
I saw Semin being a bit more active. He took quite a few hits in the offensive zone trying to set plays up, and I saw him going into corners more than usual. They also had some crisp passing in the o-zone, although that wasn’t consistent.
Failure is always an option.
His work along the boards on that play was, indeed, atrocious. I’m quite interested to see if the current adversity facing the team gets #28 going. First B"s goal notwithstanding, a pretty solid start, imo.

by mechanicsville on Jan 25, 2012 11:27 AM EST up reply actions
I think the whole line was bad on that goal. MP doing an imitation of a top was ugly.
Failure is always an option.
Numbers-wise, not much. The Caps were out-shot and out-attempted badly. But…
- They did climb back almost even in shot attempts with the B’s in the first after being badly out-everything’ed in the first 8-10 minutes.
- They did create — and finish — off speed entering the offensive zone. Much of this was due to really poor defense by Boston (the first three Caps goals), but they weren’t finishing what opportunities they have been getting, and they have been too timid working through the neutral zone in recent games.
- They did not allow depth to kill them. Segun got a goal, Marchand got one, Peverley got one (he does that against Washington). But they didn’t let the bit players undo them.
Things not so good…
- All three Boston goals were scored from an aggregate distance of 33 feet (according to official play-by-play). Boston works their offense from the top down (the defense puts a lot of shots out there), and the Caps did not do a good enough job dealing with that. That is not a product of who was out of the lineup. The Caps will face a lot of that crash-bang play at the net in the playoffs (humor me); they’d better find a way to defend it better.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Boston’s top eight goal scorers have an average shot % of 16.67% – that’s about 60% better than the league average. Sick.

Pledge Drive 2011-2012: CARSON KOLZIG FOUNDATION! Season Pledge total--$1210.35!
I thought their breakouts were a lot better after the first 10 minutes of the game. They actually spent time in Boston’s zone and generated something that resembled a sustained forecheck. The shot totals and fenwick were still ugly but I thought there were noticeable improvements none the less. The possession indicators are always going to look bad under Hunter when the team is leading in the third.
One thing I noticed (at least from 10 or so mins onward when I picked up the game) was that the puck was moving more. They had more passing through the neutral zone. The passes were not always accurate, but there was far less tendency to carry it through. It seemed a bit more effective at getting the puck through the D.

So I noticed early in the game that Hendricks was wearing an ear guard on his right side; then he gets hit on the right side with the puck. For those watching on tv/saw replay, did the puck hit his ear/side of head (I thought that’s where it hit) or somewhere else? I was surprised he ended up returning to the game, especially after he missed the door to the bench when trying skate off after getting hit.
He said post-game it caught him around the ear and got a small cut (along with a broken stitch).

Thanks; I thought it caught him around the ear and was stating at the time, good thing he had the ear guard attached to his helmet (he didn’t have one on the left side.)
Oh, Hendy
From Vogs’ recap:
For the second consecutive game, Hendricks – a one-time member of the Boston organization – established a single-game career high in ice time.
After skating a career best 16:32 in Sunday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Penguins in Pittsburgh, Hendricks bettered that mark by more than a minute when he punched in for 17:45 in Tuesday’s triumph over the Bruins.
More impressively, Hendricks played both games with a makeshift mudflap of sorts constructed on the right earhole of his helmet. That bit of workmanship was made necessary at a Saturday practice in Pittsburgh when Hendricks was hit in the right ear by an errant Ovechkin slapshot.
A gruesome injury resulted, and Hendricks needed plastic surgery, some stitches and some serious reconstruction to be able to play against the Pens less than 24 hours later.
Hendricks left Tuesday’s game briefly after getting hit with a puck up high, an incident that opened up his Saturday wound a bit.
"I’m ready for the [All-Star] break," sighs Hendricks. "I broke a stitch and there’s a little cut underneath. I didn’t need this today."
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
The ‘mudflap’ was noticeable. Thanks, I didn’t read the recap for this one, so I missed these details.
Noticeable as in we were discussing it starting with his first shift. Not good reading about that earlier injury, but in the context of the puck he took last night, good thing he had the extra protection.
It kind of reminded me a little bit of Mike Foligno’s old “salad bowl” helmet.

Actually the greatest thing Healy ever did was the “Flats and Heals Show” which was him and Pat Flatley of the Islanders doing a 10 minute pregame show. The two of them pretty much sat there and talked about anything that they felt like. It was very much like “Wayne’s World” only this pre-dated Wayne’s World by about a decade… it was pretty damn funny.

I don’t know how we didn’t bring it up yesterday, but it appears as thought the OFB piece on how players use stats (yesterday’s clips) really only discusses the traditional stats. They don’t even mention Corsi/Fenwick or any of the other advanced stats, so I think it’s fair to question whether that article is even making the point I think the author wanted to make. I think most people around hockey know that you can’t just judge a game by the box score stats, and that’s the very purpose of the advanced stats. Without addressing those advanced stats specifically the argument falls flat, no?
Please, call me F&B.
i had the same thought. i also wondered why the author didn’t ask more pointed follow up questions about the advanced stats when the players started talking about boxcars. e.g., when wideman tells you, “sometimes you play really, really good but you had nothing to show for it that way,” the obvious follow-up has to do with advanced metrics that don’t rely on points.
Yeah, my guess is that the advanced stats aren’t exactly in OFB’s wheelhouse.
Please, call me F&B.

The Sabres had skating instructor Dawn Braid working with their players this week. If she can do for them what she’s done for Islanders forward John Tavares, they can’t pay her enough. Tavares is a willing pupil, and she’s really improved both his crossovers and stride over the past couple of years. When it comes to protecting the puck, he’s approaching “Datsyukian” class, especially down low. He gets it and you can’t get it off him.
Someday he’ll crack that top 25, but by then he might be 26.

Opponents on why Phil Kessel’s having a better season: he’s doing a much better job of getting back, which allows him to break out of the Toronto zone with speed. Before, it was easier for defencemen to close in on him. By the time he’s in proximity, he’s coming at them faster than ever. Now, teams (the Rangers especially) have adjusted, getting their forwards to muck up his timing in the Maple Leafs’ zone. It will be up to Kessel to adjust back.
I think this is an important bullet. So often we look at season aggregates because they “remove the element of luck.” But what about when luck isn’t luck? I’ve talked about the role of adjustments a lot, and I think this is a great example. Kessel has slowed down, but can you really say it’s just luck about the shots going in? Maybe to a degree, but teams are also changing the way they play him, and that’s also important. So at the end of the season you’ll see one Corsi number (e.g.) and that will represent Kessel’s season, but a closer analysis will see a series of back-and-forth adjustments between Kessel and his opponents. Understanding how these adjustments play out and their role in a players’ statistical performance is a huge step for the stats community, and I don’t think they are anywhere near figuring it out.
Please, call me F&B.
by Rob Parker on Jan 25, 2012 11:04 AM EST reply actions 3 recs
Someone could get a nice paper in the sports stats community if they could come up with the differential equation that covers that. But you would really have to be able to quantify “adjustment” somehow, and I’m not confident that it could be done.
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a (select) start
And then you have sample size issues. You’d also almost have to explicitly talk about shot quality, which they obviously don’t want to do.
Please, call me F&B.
Well, the existence of the shot quality debate is one reason why I don’t think such quantification is possible. But also, I misspoke in my original post. It is not adjustment that is difficult to define, that is simply some delta. The hard part is the actual quantification of one-on-one defense (either individually or aggregate). I’m not aware of any fancy stats that can do that, but I’m also have not looked over everything that is available.
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a (select) start
I’m not aware either. I’m also not aware of anything that tries to quantify how different systems impact different statistical outputs. Do certain styles impact Corsi one way or another? Would a shift in systems create a shift in Corsi scores that indicates a rise/drop in quality of play that may be mis-leading? How many “streaky” scorers are really just guys that are locked in a constant battle of adjustments?
Please, call me F&B.
I think your first question would be a great place to start. I know it messes with sample size, but you’d have to look at tied games at even strength to remove (some coaches) ability to adjust tactics based on the score. But with that data, and a classification of coaches by style (trap, run and gun, trap, uhhh), you could conceivably get a teamwide Corsi-type stat. Or better, a system-vs-system type of Corsi.
I’d be very hesitant to draw any conclusions on an individual player based on that analysis. Even if there was enough data to support such individual analysis, so much of the game is not played at tied-evens, I’m not sure you could say anything conclusive without considering PP situations (you usually don’t care how a player is defended when he is on the PK), close games (ignore blowouts), etc.
↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← → b a (select) start
What’s great about watching [him] is his passionate-physical play. He’s dynamic offensively, and most of all, he has his own personality. Many people find [his] style disrespectful to the game, or it seems they hide their dislike for [his] personality behind those comments.

You mean can MP score 6 points every 2 games “in the long term?” Probably not, since neither could most NHL’ers. But put him on a relatively sheltered line, with a speedy and a skilled winger and I’d think he could definitely continue to generate scoring. The only caveat is that DH needs to give them some time to develop some chemistry: Perreault likes to pass fast so knowing where his linemates are is key.
But I do agree about Knubs and Ward switching lines (and put Chimmer back on the left wing).

Definitely…25-21-22. Knubs has been a 2nd half of the season guy for quite a while. He’s stepped it up of late and was great last night…. As for Matty P… if you look back at his AHL/Jr’s history he’s always been a top 6 kind of player with great numbers. He needs ice time to produce. He’s not a Backstrom, but he’s also not a 4th line player who grinds it out… With time up top and more minutes I’m hoping his consistency improves. As you can see, I’ve always been a fan.
I was really hoping Knuble would get that empty netter last night. So close. That dude needs a break.

That was an issue I brought up in the clips yesterday. I hope people expressing this opinion about Ovechkin expressed the same about those two players working ‘behind the scenes’ to not be selected when they were having all-star worthy seasons.
I am totally ok with Ovi bailing on the game, but I do think it is different. Ovi did not immediately say “all star? ahahahhah break time instead.” He only bailed when he got suspended.
Proud member of the Popsicle Division of the Cupcake Conference.
So it’s different because upon learning they were being considered and/or were going to be named they worked with their GMs (and I assume agents) to ensure the League did not name them to the ASG roster and then after they were not named, their GMs had to respond to questions about this topic. I’m talking about this in terms of the player’s actions and impact on League, fans, etc., since many against Ovechkin’s actions are saying it in that context. I just don’t see why one would be ok and the other not ok.
And how about when Lidstrom and Datsyuk chose not to go after being selected a few seasons ago? Yes, the NHL suspended them for a game, but from what I recall, most people did not agree with the 1 game suspension for each.
sk8, I would hate to ruin your faith in humanity or shake your worldview, but people are hypocrites.
Please, call me F&B.
by Rob Parker on Jan 25, 2012 2:27 PM EST up reply actions 2 recs
In terms of impact on the league, they are comparable. But I think because the reasons are different, people view it differently. Ovi is not bailing to rest, or at least that is not his primary reason. That was the primary reason for the other stars. I’m still totally behind all the given reasons to skip; if the NHL says it is ok to skip, no reason to wear yourself out.
Though I was actually ok with the 1 game suspension because they could have shown up and walked around, a la Crosby.
Proud member of the Popsicle Division of the Cupcake Conference.
I had and have mixed opinions about the 1 game suspension considering some other things for which players are not suspended.
I dislike the unofficial go behind the scenes withdraw name from consideration moves.
As someone suggested the other day, would be better if an age/number of previous appearances excused a player officially unless they wanted to be considered rather than this behind the scenes stuff.
I thought there was something they could have done other than a 1 game suspension, which punished the team/teammates as well as the individual players.
I knew Crosby showed but didn’t play. Lindros, IIRC, did something similar one year, although he may have dressed for skills and sat out the game.
I’m not sure there is too much they could have done besides a suspension. A $2,500 fine? Seems more ceremonial slap than any real punishment.
And I don’t think age/number of appearances should excuse a player. What is there’s another DiPietro. The All Star showing should be strongly suggested, but totally optional. It’s an honor to be named, so I don’t think too many players will skip. Maybe give some league provided extra monetary compensation if they are selected and go.
Proud member of the Popsicle Division of the Cupcake Conference.
I don’t care if there’s an all star event, but if there is one, I’d prefer it was focused on the skills event not a fake game.
I had this view, in general, about Selanne and Lidstrom before the Ovechkin suspension and decision.
Perhaps it would work, but it’s difficult to understand how it could be ‘totally optional’.

I never like hearing about these instances where players learn via the media. Trades are bad enough, but I do recognize sometimes things leak. It’s hard to understand how they couldn’t reach him to tell him something like this given there’s a deadline each day for placing a player on waivers.
As to the situation, he’s reported twice to Worcester this season on conditioning stints, the most recent time being last weekend. He played a total of 5 games for the AHL Sharks during the 2 conditioning stints.
I had read speculation and it made sense anyway that the goal was to prove he was healthy and potentially showcase him to other teams. The twitter commentary conclusion is that he won’t be picked up, but who knows. As he noted, 2M cap hit and salary (before pro-rating) could be an issue and this is the last season of the contract. Curious what happens if he isn’t claimed as reading into the comments above/what I saw on twitter, I am guessing he won’t want to report to Worcester.

Also catching up on some scuttlebutt that Niittymaki learned #sjsharks put him on waivers thru media. NOT THE CASE. Talked to agent. . .
. . .who said he got call from #sjsharks GM last night and passed the word to Niittymaki that he was about to go waiver route. . . .
Schultz
Was just over reading the trade rumors post on Puck Daddy and there was discussion about Shultz. Well, discussion that the Caps aren’t trying to trade him per Spector. Guess he has a permenant seat in the press box (if you put much/any stock in Spector).
He has to have value to be traded. He has none at the moment.

how much of that was created by the Hunter administration? During BB’s tenure, he was a reliable, slow, well positioned D man with a very long reach. That has to be wanted by someone…right?
I have to think so.
He’s got solid size and positioning, to say nothing of a first round pedigree. He’s signed to an affordable deal.
That has to be appealing to someone.

Sure, but what will they give to get him. Has to be worth more to GMGM, than having more depth in D for the playoffs.

Big hockey fan, was Mr. Schulz.
Schulz had a long association with ice sports, and both figure skating and ice hockey featured prominently in his cartoons. In Santa Rosa, he was the owner of the Redwood Empire Ice Arena, which opened in 1969 and featured a snack bar called “The Warm Puppy”.6 Schulz’s daughter Amy served as a model for the figure skating in the 1980 television special She’s a Good Skate, Charlie Brown.
Schulz also was very active in senior ice-hockey tournaments; in 1975, he formed Snoopy’s Senior World Hockey Tournament at his Redwood Empire Ice Arena, and in 1981, Schulz was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to the sport of hockey in the United States.

Just thinking about other ways to make the All Star Weekend more fun, as a continuation of yesterday’s discussion…
Someone in the post-game thread mentioned a shaving cream pie challenge. Another possible addition to the skills competition: goal celabration challenge. Related to that, goalie tantrums. These challenges fit the reality tv culture and could bring in non-hockey viewers who enjoy those sorts of shows.

The Caps G/G is still in the top 10 in the league at 2.81, matching their GA/G of 2.81.
But… that G/G is 2.54 under Hunter.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I happened to be in the car today and heard two talking heads on 106.7(Mike Wise and someone who is on around 12:30) dissing Ovi for not going to the All Star game. It made me so angry I feel like ranting! They seem to have no idea of the underlying back story and tone that NHL media has created regarding Ovi. There is nothing he can do at this point to earn any respect with some in the media, period. As Kyprious stated in his article, should he even be allowed to go while suspended? What if the episode had been more egregious? There should be a rule stating that suspended players can not attend. End of story. Because there is not, Ovi has to make his own decision.
No matter WHAT he decides he is screwed by a media that has already found him guilty of …..being Ovi. Remember, most already were complaining that he didn’t deserve to be there this year! If he goes and is his usual flamboyent, light-hearted self, it will be said that he doesn’t take his rebuke seriously enough. If he goes and is appropriately subdued, it will be said he is being petulant and is wasting the opportunity which could have been bestowed on a more worthy player.
So, he doesn’t go. His heart is not in it and feels he doesn’t deserve the spot since he has been suspended. In essence, giving the “more deserved player” his spot and keeping himself in the penalty box the league put him in. Both quite rational moves. But no, not the right ones. He should have to interrupt his suspension and be the face of the league and be criticized and belittled by the talking heads all weekend and resented and analyzed and called “selfish” by others who feel he took the place of a more talented player.
Which is it, is he selfish for skipping the game or selfish for going to the game and taking the place of another player who is having a banner year?
Someone let me know, but in the meantime, his true fans will look forward to him getting his game back and will hope to see him in highlight reels for years to come.

Alex Ovechkin is a selfish, undeserving lout who can’t understand why he needs to be In Ottawa as the face of the NHL instead of James Neal (who could only be picked out of a one-person lineup by his mother) in spite of his suspension, at a game he has no bizness attending because he is suspended and isn’t having the year Neal is.

Buccigross’ Top 100 NHL Players! And we’ve already got a Cap!
94. Nicklas Backstrom: Hard to quantify how Alex Ovechkin effects his numbers. Before his current concussion, he was able to escape injury. He’s a little hard to figure out because his numbers, while good, have yet to be consistent.

Vinny is #76. Green and Backstrom are below him. I am guessing Bucci has Stamkos and St Louis above Lecavalier on the list. So that’s three Bolts probably ahead of 2/3 of the Caps’ most important players. And I would even say Hedman is more important to the Bolts than Vinny these days. Typical Buccigross.

It’s the gossipy nature of all news, I think. Because the “real news” part of the news gets disseminated instantly, the 24-hour coverage has to fill the other 23.75 hours with, well, bullshit. When you actually had to wait some hours to even find out the score of the Broncos game, there was less time to gossip about Tim Tebow.

so Dan Patrick, who NEVER talks Hockey on his show, was all over TT yesterday and then today mentions Ovi in reference to a rejected poll question on which is worse – the WH snub or the ASG snub. So yeah, it’s getting people who don’t follow Hockey to talk about well, not Hockey, but hockey related issues. Of course he threw in the Alex has always been temperamental (really spellcheck there’s an extra “a” in there – who knew?) meme.
