The Noon Number
2,184 - Number of days since the Caps last played a game without both Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom (January 31, 2006), which they'll almost certainly do tonight when they face Boston.
Since Backstrom entered the League, the duo has combined for 820 points in 720 man-games (regular season), including 323 goals.
(And in case you're wondering, the last time the team played without Ovechkin, Backstrom or Mike Green was April 4, 2004... before any of the three was drafted, 2,851 days ago.)

I’ve got nothing, but I’m not a reporter and don’t have enough facts to say “definitely.” But definitely.

I understand a lot of you support this “moral stand”, but I think it comes off as incredibly petty and immature. Curious what your opinions are.
He most certainly would be a distraction…a suspended player in the All-Star game. All the Ovi-haters would be saying he shouldn’t be there. Plus, he’d be answering stupid questions from the media all weekend.
I say he’s doing the best thing for himself, and I’m totally fine with that. Caps need a happy Ovi, not a bitter one.

h8rs gonna h8.
OV totallly justified in skipping (even though the National H8rs League might slap him with another game): he can’t play in games that count, but they can use his OVness to boost ratings? You’ve got tot be kidding me.
Curious what your opinions are.
No you’re not – you’re trolling us.
Moreover, discussion of the topic should be in the Clips thread – this thread’s about tonight’s game.

A fitting number that encapsulates the team’s run at or near the top of the league. In January 2006 the window wasn’t open yet. In January 2012 some say it’s closed. We’ll know more in April but perhaps as elderly old folks we’ll look back on this Noon Number and shake our calcified heads mournfully and remember The Day the Red Stopped Rocking.
or something.

So Backstrom wasn’t even in the league when this last happened. Awesome.
Once you take the fisting element out, it's not romantic anymore.

Wasn’t that the season he stayed in Russia?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Semin returned home for the lockout which was 04-05.
But you’re right, Semin’s last game of the 03-04 season was April 3. That was the infamous postgame missed flight w/ LaCanfora.
"Money talks. I listen."
He also stayed home in 2005-06, the first season out of the lockout.

So you’re not counting the playoffs? Because there were some games that I swear all three of these guys weren’t in the game.
Everything sounds smarter in Tikkanesse....

Ovi out of the All Star Game
Ovechkin is officially not attending the All Star game. If Shanny is going to unfairly single him out as a repeat offender (apparently ignoring the whole 18 month rule) and make an example of him, Ovi isn’t going to play along like nothing is wrong and attend the All Star Game to boost their ratings and attendance. Good for him.

So it’s safe to say the Bs thrash us? Who’s going to score for the caps?
What say you, hockey gods???
I am fascinated to see how this team responds tonight with Ovie, Backstrom and Greener all out of the lineup. This should be a character building thing and we could use some character. To play a game without arguably the 3 most valuable players should show a lot about the rest of the guys. I expect us to work our backsides off and to keep this game close if not find a way to win. Everyone knows they can’t count on the big guys to carry the load. Every man for themselves.
Every man for themselves.
This is the opposite of how they need to play tonight.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
Ah yeah I supposed I said what I meant poorly. I meant that every man has to win the one on one battles which will be a real challenge against a hard working team like the B’s but it is required to avoid getting crushed.
Gut-check, adversity builds character, B's Beatdown time.
If the boys have gleaned ANYTHING from their six weeks under Hunter, tonight would be the time to show it.
I see this as a huge test for Hunter. Clearly hes not had the time to mold the team the way Bylsma has the Pens, but I’d like to see Hunter field a solid team over the next couple games. If the past several years and BB’s firing has proven anything, its that Ovie, Nicky and Greener aren’t the missing pieces to a Stanley Cup. A full effort, well coached, team mentality is (imo).
Back to the rebuilding team work ethic would be nice. You know, like when they were short on talent but very hard to play against.
It’s ridiculous that this team has this record.

yea. that has been a big bother for me lately. Back then we were terrible, but you knew they would never disappoint with effort.
Yeah. They would win games they had no business winning and give good teams all they could handle.
I can’t reconcile the team that beat Detroit 7-1 with this team. I just can’t wrap my head around this.

I think we’re screwed so the team might as well just beat the shit out of the entire Bruins squad. Maybe we’ll just take so many majors the first 3 minutes we’ll be disqualified for the game.
