And Michalek gets away scott free.

The NHLPS wants to rebrand itself? Get rid of outcomes like these, where one player gets more discipline than another for a lesser offense. It also gives more support to the (increasingly obvious) notion that the NHL prefers, ahem, certain teams over others.

Which looks worse in comparison: 0 games for Michalek, or 5 for Bourque?

by brs03 on Jan 23, 2012 6:30 PM EST reply actions

5 for Bourque – in hindsight because of the damage to Backstrom.

by STLEdge on Jan 23, 2012 6:31 PM EST up reply actions

the Michalek, in my opinion. 5 is a large amount lately – and Michalek was already hit, pissed off, and then went after a caps player. No punishment for him doesn’t sit well at all

by aaw6848 on Jan 23, 2012 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

I hope this is one of the times when a non-suspension warrants a video. My assumption was 1 game for Michalek. I’ll go for no suspension *even if a warning and a fine (neither confirmed) over a 5 game suspension if I had to choose.

by sk84fun_dc on Jan 23, 2012 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

I’d add, I’m ok with 3 games for Ovechkin if Michalek had been suspended and in the context of the previous suspensions and fines Ovechkin has received, but I’m not a fan of the inconsistency on the same day. More than 3 and I’d really not get it, but in context I understand where they are coming from, especially seeing video in the official one, I did not see before (I watched the game but didn’t look at the videos people were posting.)

Again, I hope they make a video for the Michalek non-suspension.

by sk84fun_dc on Jan 23, 2012 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

0 on Michalek. The NHL tries to claim they’re protecting players heads, Michalek goes and cooks Hendricks and gets nothing. Fuck Shanahan, he’s fucking awful at his job, just like Campbell was.

Both are bad, but Bourque. Bourque and Bourque. Not for hindsight on the injury to Backstrom. Injury should not be penalized. That’s where you get gray area that players can not adjust to. CLEAR INTENT TO INJURE should be. That’s what Bourque did. That’s what Malkin tried to do to Giroux. Giroux sitting for less than 20 games, and Malkin sitting for less than 10 is the most asinine thing I have ever seen.

We saw Sutton get 8 games for leaving his feet, but the extra games for Sutton were likely because the head was TARGETED not just hit.

Remember, these decisions, including the Bourque one are coming from a guy who has a clear hatred for this team after ’06. We should expect no protection from this guy. He was a fool when he played and is just as much a fool now.

Watch it. Highly recommended.

Key points:

1. Ovechkin launches himself into Michalek. He must control himself from that point forward.
2. Michalek makes no movement to put his head into the path of the elbow.
3. Ovechkin’s priors
4. Michalek wasn’t injured, which must be a mitigating factor.

The analysis is fair. We may not agree, but it’s fair and very, very, very clear. Kudos to Shanahan.

It just feels like if Ovie does that same hit he’s going to time it correctly 8 or 9 times out of ten and the whole thing is completely legal. But Michalek sticking his elbow into a player’s head as they reach the boards is going to cause serious injury more times than not.

Shanny is going to have some explaining to do when something like this http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/highschool-prep-rally/days-player-paralyzed-another-minnesota-hockey-teen-hospitalized-160132176.html happens in the NHL and people point out the example he set today

by icehammer97 on Jan 23, 2012 7:49 PM EST up reply actions

Quite frankly, I have no problem with Ovi’s suspension although I don’t think he deserved three games but the league is obviously using this to send a message. My issue is with the fact that Michalek got nothing even though Michalek himself admited that he elbowed Hendricks because he was mad about Ovi’s hit. Are retaliatory elbows to the head acceptable to the NHL? The league’s inconsistency is what bothers me.

I know that I made a bad play and maybe I was still a little bit mad about the hit before.
Next shift I took a penalty. It was a good call. I elbowed the guy.

I understand, but that hit was dangerous. I love Ovechkin and I love it when he lays huge hits. But he doesn’t need to leave his skates and that could have ended up a lot worse. I think we should all be thankful, even if it’s partially for Ovechkin’s sake, that Michalek wasn’t injured.

If I were Shanahan I would have given Ovechkin 2 or 3 and Michalek 1.

by Laich Button on Jan 23, 2012 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

yes, leaving your feet can be dangerous. And I think things would sit a little easier if Michalek got the suspension he deserved. But it’s just impossible to decipher any kind of pattern in these suspensions. If they are looking for “head targeting” then Michalek deserves 5 games, easy. But apparently, today, unlike other days – they weren’t.

by aaw6848 on Jan 23, 2012 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

I agree. It’s definitely inconsistent and frustrating as a result. Fact of the matter is, Ovechkin earned a 3 game suspension at a really bad time – Our top 6 for the Boston game are 28, 85, 20, 21, 22, and (hopefully maybe) 90. Yuck.

by oldemystix on Jan 23, 2012 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

I think time should be taken into consideration; something along the lines of a gradient. X weight if it’s been 1 year, Y weight if it’s been 2, and Z weight if it’s been three. Obviously it’s not an exact science. But I think it should be considered.

Once you take the fisting element out, it's not romantic anymore.

by Steckel Me Elmo on Jan 23, 2012 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

I was joking, mostly. But yeah, I do think that suspensions under Campbell should receive less weight. Of course, there are a lot of players who didn’t get suspended under Campbell when they should have.

by brooksengr on Jan 23, 2012 7:33 PM EST up reply actions

I thought the same.
I think the players association should challenge if there is need to clarify that once repeat offender status is lifted for essentially ‘good behavior’, future punishment will still be based on crimes where time has already been served. At the very least a time limit for allowing previous infractions to be considered. Such a timeframe – even if such a thing already exists – wouldn’t necessarily be shorter than however long its been since his last suspension. But I’m not aware of any time restriction, and I think there should be one.

I’m actually curious how they’d play it. He’s already missing his first game after the break. Can they mandate he miss any more? My guess is they can, since he doesn’t have a health reason for skipping and it would fall within his contractual obligations.

by brs03 on Jan 23, 2012 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

I assume if he doesn’t get some form of permission they’d tack on a game. The penalty for Datsyuk and Lidstrom was 1 game each.

I’m actually of the opinion that he should not even be in the All Star Game anyway, if he’s suspended.

He should not be in the game period. Even before this incident. Skipping it makes him look like a pouty brat. What I’d do if I were Ovie and ALLOWED TO PLAY WHILE SUSPENDED is go play, and hit anything that moves on the other team as violently and LEGALLY as possible.

But it’s still not a comparable type of appearance (and, FWIW, we don’t know if the NHL will have any sort of response to Thomas yet beyond what his own GM has said).

No, no it’s not. It’s one thing for the League to name you for an ASG, it’s another when you’ve asked your GM in advance (months I think I read earlier) not going to a photo op and getting permission to.

I am looking forward to returning after the three games and helping the Capitals towards the playoffs and the Stanley Cup. If I heard a player had done something to warrant a three game suspension that crosses the all-star game, I would expect them to be barred from playing in it by the league.
1. I only saw the replay and it looked to me like a charge where the head was not the primary point of contact so I was surprised there was even a hearing.

by Alex Reed on Jan 23, 2012 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

He forfeited about double, because he’s a true repeat offender (so he lost money for every day he was off the roster, not just 5 days worth). Of course he makes about 40% of what Ovi does or whatever.

by brs03 on Jan 23, 2012 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

Really, Ovi is a “true” repeat offender too. Bourque is a repeat offender for purposes of calculating fines. Under the Shanahan regime, as in real life, the slate doesn’t get wiped clean if you behave for 18 months.

by iwearstripes on Jan 23, 2012 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

“true” as in “legally applicable for purposes of calculating lost salary.”

That “true repeat offender” has worked it’s way into the lexicon bugs me. Nothing against you, of course.

I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.

by iwearstripes on Jan 23, 2012 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

I’m pretty sure they fine the amount that the player would have made over that span. So 5 games of Bourque’s salary vs. 3 of Ovechkin’s.

by hockeyman33 on Jan 23, 2012 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

True repeat offender status (susp. in last 18 months or whatever) changes that, too. Ovi loses 3 days worth of pay. Bourque lost quite a bit more, 5 games worth plus the amount covering every day between.

by brs03 on Jan 23, 2012 6:55 PM EST up reply actions

Ovi loses his pay for the “game days” he misses. Bourque lost his pay for every “duty day” he missed. Duty days are all days, games, practices, and days off, where a player would otherwise need to fulfill obligations to the team.

I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.

I don’t think Shanahan isn’t doing any justice to himself by not explaining more why Michalek wasn’t suspended. If he would make similar video explaining why, I think it would help. We may not agree, but it’s a shame he hasn’t done that yet.

I really wish refs would take a little more notice of Orpik’s dirty stick work after the whistles. He’s sly about going for hands and wrists instead of crosschecking to the chest or facewashing like most guys do. He had a massive crosscheck to Ovi’s wrists in the last game. I think it was in the third. Semin took exception on the play.

And remember why I come here first to read. How can I be cranky. I get it all—from calm logic to rabid tinfoil hat time. And so much of the funny.

It’s picking a nit but I’d switch 83 and 50. I’d like to switch 26 and 22, but then the 3rd line is nothing and we’ve only got two lines that even remotely resemble lines. This is the best you can do, I think.

Our 4th line should be in the AHL.

Okay, that’s an exaggeration as some of the people fit the lines they’re assigned to. But many of them don’t

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3Gvfr9GUC0

it is the best clean hockey hit I have ever seen. The key word being ‘clean’. If you watch the video, Campbell’s feet do leave the ice at impact, as I have seen Ovie’s do before. This time, Ovie I think mistimed his surge, really. He had that upward surge when he hit Ruutu as well, but he didn’t surge upward until contact. On this one, he pushed too early and got airborne before contact.

What bothered me was the assertion that ‘because he left his feet, it was charging’ and because he charged, he is responsible for where the blow lands, and part of it landed on Michalek’s head. I get that. But wouldn’t the same apply on boarding? Because Michalek boarded Hendricks, shouldn’t he be responsible for driving Hendrick’s head into the boards?

That, and the fact that apparently the statute of limitations on supplementary discipline is eternal. If the reason Micchalek was not suspended and Ovie was is because of ‘repeat offender’ status, according to the CBA Ovie should be no more repeat offender than Michalek. As I understand it.

But yeah… if you run someone over when fleeing from police, it’s much worse than running someone over accidently while driving around. That was the analogy I got from Shanahan’s explanation… that because Ovie was commiting an (uncalled on-ice) infraction, and contacted the head, it is worse than contacting the head incidentally. But Michalek was commiting a (called on-ice) infraction at the time his forearm slammed Hendrick’s head into the glass. At the least, should be similar penalties.

I don't know, maybe it was the roses...

I learn a lot from the dialogue (I love it when you and Doh’boy get into it). You are a hell of a good debater. It’s a lost art in this era of the thin skin. Release the Mackan!

by Killer_Carlson on Jan 23, 2012 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

It was kind of a pick your penalty situation. If it’s not elbowing, it’s a check to the head. If the arm hits the back, maybe it’s still elbowing (but doubtful)? If the arm is completely down, it’s possibly still checking from behind or maybe charging. In game, it didn’t look that violent compared to some hits. Dirty hit, nonetheless. Calling elbowing allows ref a 2-min minor instead of an automatic major for some of the other fouls. That maybe makes sense at game speed. With benefit of review, though, should at least be a fine or 1-game suspension.

by brooksengr on Jan 23, 2012 10:34 PM EST up reply actions

Ovie’s hit was not 3-game suspension worthy. It is excessive, even with his priors which are over a season and a half ago. I can’t shake the feeling that he’s being used again as the “see we hold stars accountable too” example. Ovie is a cleaner player than several other top players who have never been held responsible the way he has. It is past time to call others on their questionable and dirty plays. People’s perception of Ovie is so skewed that I don’t feel he gets a fair shake. Look how quickly the “Ovie is dirty” faction raised their cries again and bloggers slanted their narratives.

The decision is more egregious in light of absolutely nothing for Michalek. If you aren’t called to account, then you are never going to have priors. That is unfair.

Agree completely. Letting Michalek get away with that without any discipline is BS for exactly this reason. Otherwise, the discipline system separates players into “clean” players and “dirty” players with very little ability for a player to change their status.

Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!

by kingzman264 on Jan 23, 2012 7:43 PM EST up reply actions

Appreciate the reminder to include the quotation marks in my sig. Last I checked, indifference is a synonym of apathy. The definition of apathy is (a) absence or suppression of passion, emotion, or excitement (b) lack of interest in or concern for things that others find moving or exciting.

To clarify, I’m using the word apathy in the context of how psychiatrists study apathy and it’s relationship to depression. Don’t get me wrong I’m not depressed or anything, because that is a very real condition and something to be taken seriously. But my point is psychiatrists talk about that mental state where one gets a sense that “nothing matters.”

I suppose my “mental state” as a Caps’ “fan”, at the moment given the expectations I had at the beginning of the season, can be described as having apathy. If only temporary. It’s hard to think all the whoopin’ and hollerin’ at the TV going on while playing a little bit of miniature hockey with my nephew during yesterday’s tilt would be described as indifference.

Just venting. That’s all.

I suppose my "mental state" as a Caps’ "fan", at the moment given the expectations I had at the beginning of the season, can be described as having apathy.

I feel the same way; but, im hopeful that they’ll turn it around and/or get lucky in the postseason (as many teams do. . .and seemingly always against the Caps)

We’ll go with the quotation marks for now, then, when you’re feeling more fanatic about the team, you should take them off. . .or take them off whenever you feel like cause you dont have to listen to me lol

Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!

Sounds like good fuel for a noon-number.

by brooksengr on Jan 23, 2012 8:33 PM EST up reply actions

A few thoughts

1) At first, I wasn’t sold on the suspension; but, after watching the video Ovechkin leaving his feet seems to directly result in the contact with the head. That’s definitely suspension worthy.

2) There’s a big difference between leaping into a hit and leaving your feet. Unfortunately, Ovechkin jumped a bit early and left his feet rather than leaped into Michalek. For those comparing this hit to others in the same vein, i would definitely consider that difference.

3) Just as Shanahan’s video cleared things up for me concerning the Ovechkin hit, I would hope his explanation as to why he didnt suspend Michalek would do the same. That being said, I’m pretty doubtful he could convince me that a clear hit to the head, with the elbow, while also boaring a player, is not worthy of a suspension.

4) I really hope Ovechkin doesn’t come out of this suspension the same way he came out of his suspension after hitting Campbell.

5) I would hope GMGM files a grievance over this suspension. Ovechkin is NOT a repeat offender under the rules of the CBA so factoring his prior suspensions shouldn’t be a factor in the ruling. A suspension of 1-2 games would have been much more appropriate.

Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!

Oh I don’t think he got more than he deserved, I’m saying he’s lucky to have gone so long without being suspended. The 3 game number seems fair, especially for the damage he could have done. Michalek’s hit is a completely separate issue and has no bearing on this judgement.

I know the NHL likes to pretend that all discipline reviews happen in a vacuum, but the fact is, they do not. Past precedent is incredibly important. For the NHL to say, today, that an elbow to the head is not suspendable act, and then turn around and essentially toss the book at a non-elbow charging hit is inexplicable. Next time a guy uses his elbow and forearm to shove a defenseless player into the boards, all they have to do is say “But you said it’s not illegal! Just look at your very own Michalek ruling!”

I can’t offer links as they didn’t make news. He obviously wasn’t suspended so there’s nothing to link to. I’m definitely not rewatching the past season and a half and recording questionable hits just to have a debate on the internet. It boils down to this: I believe that his his are frequently… spirited… and cross a line that could be deemed suspendable. He’s left his feet before, he’ll do it again.

Maybe I should ask some fanatic Pens fan for some links, I’m sure they could give us their usual speech.

by TheBored on Jan 23, 2012 8:14 PM EST up reply actions

Don’t need to provide links. Just examples of when he left his feet as he made a hit that are suspension worthy. I really don’t recall any. Your comment is just like anyone saying “you always do that.” Too vague to be worthwhile.

In fact from my perspective Ovi has been relatively cautious with his physicality, especially last season. He hasn’t been riding that line of recklessness that use to characterize his big hits since his last suspension, and in fact I’ve seen him pull out of a number of hits whenever he’s close to the boards. Frankly the one thing I’ve been happy to see since Hunter took over is an increase in his physicality. And I hope he continues. That line between reckless and just hard is one he should continue to ride, and hopefully stay on the side of the angels more often than not. A tame Ovi is an ineffective Ovi.

I’ve seen the same things out of Ovie, but you said it better. He has backed off from checks and thrown less thundering checks since his last suspension. Too many times he has peeled away from a player, gun shy, leaving the the player uncontested. The past two months he was starting to increase his physicality again while hitting smarter. One infraction and he gets to book thrown at him again.

Nah, if they were they would of suspended Steckel indefinitely like 5 games for the Crosby fiasco. I’m more so referencing the letters that were published a while ago now involving top league officials screaming at refs for non-calls on certain…cough…players they are related to.

Yeah, I’m saying that if the league was playing favorites they would of suspended him even though it was an accident because people were near rioting over it (and still vehemently argue otherwise)

But really I’m more PO’d about this being like the one week every 2 months I get to be home in time for Caps games and almost all of our best players are MIA for various reasons.

Shanahan is but one human, but he’s got a team of people working on these things who are missing more dangerous hits to take their time explaining other questionable hits. I’m of the mindset that because Michalek was the victim of this hit he was given a vouch of innocence for the game, which is so so much worse of an idea to put out there than Campbell’s wheel of justice ever was.

I mean, everyone hates Cookie and plays him hard. He’s on the receiving end of a questionable hit so by this logic he gets to go all…Matt Cooke SMUSH!…the rest of the game?

I’m with you. It was a bad, bad hit by AO (whom I love) and I don’t think the suspension is outrageous. I know the NHL is wildly inconsistent with this, but if they suspended every player that charges, leaves his feet, and hits a guy’s head into the boards, the league would be better for it.

And while Michalek’s hit was plenty bad, I don’t think it was worse from an intent perspective. I get suspending for that, and wish the league would do it more often.

Shanahan is actually applying a logic to his decisions and is being open with the process. Things like this clearly inform his decision-making. Whether or not he makes the “right call” in your eyes doesn’t mean he’s just blindly stabbing at things.

Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.

by SmallZ827 on Jan 23, 2012 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

Shanahan’s “good” about making videos for the suspensions but not so good when making videos of the non-suspensions. If similar hits in the future should occur with different disciplinary results, there should be a video explaining the non-suspension.

A step in the right direction from the Campbell regime but work is still needed.

by CapsFan75 on Jan 23, 2012 10:53 PM EST up reply actions

But you do have to draw the line somewhere. Otherwise, Shanny will never leave that green room. Of course Caps fans feel particularly aggrieved about the Michaelek non-suspension, but even as a Caps fan, I’m not particularly bothered by it.

by DonnieKnutts on Jan 23, 2012 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

I would prefer the old system, honestly. You expect the inequity and inconsistency. This new focus was founded on being more transparent, and now that we need answers, we get none and are back to wondering how many more light sentences we’ll get from Shanny because he still has a bug up his ass about Brashear in ’06.

by FFSEnough on Jan 24, 2012 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

Sure, Shanahan uses logic. It’s just different logic for every hit, just like Campbell.

Shanahan’s explanations for suspensions are no more logical than Campbell’s he just uses videos. Sure, that’s an improvement, but it’s not enough to suggest that he is actually going to apply standards any more consistently than Campbell did. If he’s really looking at repeat offender status logically then why did Torres and Bourque get off with light suspensions despite having been suspended earlier in the same season? If he’s applying logic consistently how does he not suspend Lucic (one does not extend their arms in the follow through the way Lucic did if they are just protecting themselves) but then suspend Tootoo for a far less egregious goalie hit just a couple weeks later?

Even Campbell never just suspended someone and said “because I say so”. He had justifications for his decisions too. The problem was that standards were inconsistently applied, just as they are being done so here. Early in the season Shanahan was very tough on hits from behind, whether there was intent or not. Hitters were responsible for being in control. But now Michalek gets off the hook for a dirty hit just because “his knees buckled” so he wasn’t in control? Sorry, but with every decision by Shanahan I lose faith in his ability to consistently apply logic to his decisions.

Bourque’s 5 games was “light”?

by DonnieKnutts on Jan 23, 2012 11:31 PM EST up reply actions

Seeing how he had been (lightly) suspended for 2 games less than a month before, and then threw a blatant elbow to the head, yeah, I think it was light. Bourque threw two hits in less than a month, the second of which caused a serious head injury, and that’s only worth 2 more games than AO’s first suspendable hit in almost two years? Yeah, doesn’t make sense to me either.

Release the Mackan!

by Killer_Carlson on Jan 23, 2012 11:42 PM EST up reply actions   3 recs

I suppose it could’ve gone up to maybe 7, but 5 is pretty heavy relative to the other suspensions this year.

by DonnieKnutts on Jan 23, 2012 11:44 PM EST up reply actions

To some, not to others, hence the inconsistency. But Bourque was only one example, there’s been too many examples of drastically different penalties for similar acts for me to have faith in Shanahan’s consistency. Porter gets 4 games for kneeing, McQuaid gets a fine a week later. Lucic gets nothing for running Miller, Tootoo gets 2 games. Torres gets a fine for launching, then warned, then the next game does it again and he still only gets 2 games. AO gets 3 for the first offense. Shanahan has been willing to lay down the law on first time offenders like Letang, Pacioretty, Stewart and Bouchard, but not for Michalek.

by DonnieKnutts on Jan 24, 2012 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, clear intent to injure should be 20+ games. If the guy says his clear intent to injure was “Instinctual” you suspend him until he can prove it is not. Clear attempts to injure should also be suspended with as much vigor if they really want to remove them.

Probably right – even with Ovechkin not enough stars with name recognition.

I agree no-win and same level of interest, but I think there would be some fans disappointed he won’t be there. Of course, it’s a risk for any game or event that a player won’t be able to play due to injury, suspension, etc.

It’s a no-win for the NHL.

Good. The NHL is a horribly run organization and they shouldn’t have a win. Ever. If they want wins they need to stop alienating fans, and put systems in place that don’t lead to such horrible inconsistency and inability to protect its players.

Once you take the fisting element out, it's not romantic anymore.

I don’t blame Ovi one bit for not feeling comfortable about attending as a suspended player.

Yesterday, I actually posted about wondering what was the rule on whether suspended players should play in the All Star game.

Three games – meh. ASG – double meh. Emrick blows. Bring back Gary Thorne! Bring back Flyer-loving Bill Clement and his mosquito tent!

Damn Ovie. Get your head out of your ass and learn how to play the game. Stop leaving your feet, how fucking clear can it be? And when you get back, we don’t have time for any mental midgetry. The season is already on the verge of implosion.

It isn’t even anger-inducing. It does not seem to be worth that kind of emotional investment. It might not even be disappointing any more. It is expected.

Don’t know if this was mentioned elsewhere but Alan May talked about the suspension tonight at Hockey and Heels. He said the spear by Ovi this season (in his opinion it was faked by the other player) counted against Ovi with the suspension.

If Millbury is the Hockey’s Rachel Maddow, Alan May is our Bill O’Reilly. I can’t stand the guy.

Repeat Offender?

What I do not understand is why Shanahan raises that Ovechking has a history of suspended hits. If he is no longer a repeat offender (over 18 months since his last suspension) why is it even raised? It is not relevant.

Simple solution, drop the suspension down to 1 game and he can then play in the ASG. Otherwise, I am sure Ovie would prefere to spend the next week back in Russia.

Shanahan is awful at his job. That’s why it’s raised.

Just because he’s not a repeat offender based on the CBA’s rules for fining players doesn’t mean that his previous hits aren’t relevant. Sutton wasn’t a repeat offender by the CBA language when he elbowed Landeskog, but Shanahan rightfully considered his past hits. If Cooke goes 18 months without a dirty hit then delivers another flying elbow should Shanahan not consider his previous hits and just give him a clean slate?

I want to know who in the League front offices someone in the Penguins organization has pictures of. It’s the only explanation.

I need 100% of you guys to give 110% 100% of the time.
