Third Period Open Thread
A much better second period has the Caps tied heading into the third. The offense is still relying on the power play, but the Caps are just where they want to be: a coin flip away.

Martin and Chimera – 2 minutes each at the end of 2P.

Dirtiest player who doesn’t have the rep. I don’t understand it.

How did Malkin not get unsportsmanlike or anything for tripping Alzner headfirst into boards after the whistle?

NBC sucks donkey ********.
Unsportsmanlike can be called anytime and includes: “Any player who is guilty of unsportsmanlike conduct including, but not limited to hair-pulling, biting, grabbing hold of a face mask, etc. If warranted, and specifically when injury results, the referee may apply”

That Lidstrom/Perry commercial makes no sense. None.

I just still don’t understand where Corey Perry and Nicklas Lidstrom would be going that would require them to share a car,

Just re-watched the Brouwer-Kennedy scrap. Why does McGuire cream himself over TKennedy every time he steps on the ice?
Cross check and all call.
If that 2nd period Caps team shows up here we win this game. But if the 1st period Caps take the ice . . . .
ABSOLUTELY! (Hindsight is everything here)

Meant to post this during intermission, but found it interesting that news on twitter is that
the Penguins hired fDon Waddell as a pro scout.
Interesting. Wonder what his draft history overall was like in ATL.
I was trained to mix concrete and sign complicated insurance forms.
Pro scout not amateur scout, but his history of signings and trades isn’t the greatest from what I recall.
It’s definitely a coin flip. Unless the Caps start demonstrating some good 5 on 5 play and getting an even strength goal.

For the talk about Ovie’s hit to the head I have now seen at least 2 Pens hit Caps in the head, one just called a 2 one not called so Pens fans better not be bitching.
Here’s a bet I would have lost -

I feel like Neuvy and Vokoun have played much better of late than their GAA’s indicate. A lot to do with the guys in front of them.
Shaky, even.

By my count, that tip is the Caps’ 17th shot.

It was a great shot by Neal.

Schultz had a period of time where he was screening his goalie two seasons ago. He learned to drop to a knee at key times blocking directly in front of the goal.
Easy to get back up again and mobility not greatly hampered. Not sure if applicable in this particular case but Carlson’s been screening a little recently.
No, I don't think I'll ever get over Macho Grande

I think Pierre’s tongue just tickled Malkin’s prostate. That’s certainly what it looked and sounded like.

Really pains me to say, but that was a great play by Malkin. Honestly, I can’t say Ovechkin would have gotten up like that to go corral the puck and send it back in.
It was a great play. Crazy how he took four Caps with him.

It’s going to be hard to pull this one out before regulation. It has an OT feel to it from the Caps.
Caps down in shots, but not as bad as usual. 21-19.

Noticed Hammer was on Malkin out high then went away from him as he went back low. Three goals were in major part due to him today. His worst game under Hunter.

I’m pissed Malkin won it, but I’m not mad at the 2nd & 3rd period Caps. A point against the hot Pens on the road with no Swedish centers is something I can live with.
Kind of this, especially after the first period. Which if they had shown up for, they probably would have won this game. In regulation.

Hamrlik’s play on the GWG was atrocious. That was peewee hockey; got caught following the puck in the D zone and left Malkin alone. Sure, let’s just leave the leading scorer in the league alone around the net.
Once you take the fisting element out, it's not romantic anymore.

Channeling Carl from 5 for Howling, worth bringing up that Schultz (when matched up against him) eats Malkin for breakfast? No? OK then.

Which DC sports team has the Most Valuable Players? That would be DC United, a team being pushed out by the city. Help Keep United in DC so they can receive a fair deal on a lease and help develop a path to build a stadium with local investment and incentives.
Caps/Pens ends with a Pens goal from a weird bounce/angle, though to be fair, we’ve seen much worse.
Par for the course either way.
Let’s just hope the ‘losing in the regular season, but winning in the playoffs’ holds true for the Caps like it has for the Pens the last few years.
Just kidding. It’s the Caps.
