Second Period Open Thread
Trailing 2-0, the Caps could really use some production from the Power Play right now. A man advantage could be just the thing the Caps need to get their first scoring chance of the game.

ManU 2-1 on a late goal and bad subbing by Wenger.

With all due respect to Crosby, no other player scares me more than Malkin in “Beast Mode” Caps-Pens game. Even more so if they were to square off against other in a playoff series.

With sutherland wearing the orange the caps are about as likely to get 4 more phantom calls than score a ppg
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."

by Christoph J on Jan 22, 2012 1:32 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I woke up at 12:40 to watch THIS?
I’m so tired of this defensive approach. Our intent was because we kept flaming out in the playoffs, but this team is no better and even looks worse. We simply do not have the personnel to run this style. Our best defense-men is an offensive stud for crying out loud. I wanna go back to our offensive approach that won us games and got us into great postseason position.
Long season and this may just be a bad stretch, but when we’ve had bad stretches before, it was because we weren’t getting the breaks. Now I feel like we can identify real problems, apart from the injuries. The turnovers, the timely penalties, the conservative/back on our heels play overall. It’s like this team is afraid to attack the net.
dumping and chasing works, if the guys work. They aren’t working. They dump the puck in and don’t get possession and then end up with 4 shots and a big goose egg for scoring chances in a period. I get that we don’t’ have our top 2 centers, but still, wingers can work and skate hard too.
I don’t think they have the speed for the dump and chase. But I see trouble with overall fundamentals. Our puck handling and passing in general has been dreadful, which is why we’ve been seeing so many turnovers and break away attempts by our opponents. It really is frustrating when we’ve seen this personnel be an offensive juggernaut.
That offensive style will never win in the playoffs, so if you just want exciting regular season games with no chance of ever winning a cup, by all means, keep hoping for showboat hockey to return.

In case they blow up this roster, they’ll hover around where they are now if they play this style. I don’t see us utilizing the players.
They aren’t even playing “this stye” yet. They can’t even cycle the puck. They don’t finish checks. They are not playing with gusto or effort. So if you mean they are gonna attempt a balanced hockey style and half ass it even with new players, you’re right, they’ll still suck.

There’s a problem with effort, but they’re just sloppy in general.
soooooooooooooo blow up the roster, or at least part ways with the guys that are the problem. Dare I say Semin.
How dare you! Semin? Thats going out on a limb.

looked like a hit to the head to me
"I broke my face. Ran into Brendan Shanahan. You can Google it."
-Mike Knuble
it was shoulder to shoulder but ovechkin leaving his feet changed his line of contact so he slid up the shoulder and got the head too. wasn’t “head targeting” though, in my opinion
So his defense is he left his feet and that cause him to make contact with the head? if anything leaving his feet makes it worse
"I broke my face. Ran into Brendan Shanahan. You can Google it."
-Mike Knuble
Hard to see how that’s a suspension. No head contact. Not from behind. Didn’t charge. Just left his feet – probably worth 2 minutes at most.

I always wonder about that and why it isn’t called?
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
The officials dont have the stones (or ability) to call the game as the rules require. Which is unfortunate.
They did a few years ago, but they stopped doing it come playoff season. If they had kept it up, perhaps “fun to watch” hockey would have won out over 90s era clutch and grab

I just rewound to watch the Ovechkin hit on Michalek. First contact by Ovechkin was shoulder on shoulder, then glanced up to the head. Michalek’s hit on Hendricks had more direct head contact as the first contact. I don’t know what Shanahan looks for, but I saw shoulder first.

Not so sure it’s that simple. It had more to do with Caps forwards (Laich and Semin) burying the quality scoring chances they had. Those shots were within 10ft of the goal and products of simple, fundamental play. Short crisp passes. SOG creating rebounds.

"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
Kills me how EddieO acts like a Monday morning quarterback on these plays. The Caps score because the Pens tried one more pass on their last rush. If that pass gets thru it’s 3-1 Birds. But because the Caps managed to turn it around and tie the game the blame goes to the guy who didn’t get the pass thru.
