Whew! The black cloud/silver lining metaphor sums up my feelings today. I was offered tix to last night’s dog on Wednesday. It would have been my first Caps game live since 2004 and my first chance to see Ovi, et. al. in person. It would also have required 3 hours by auto each way. Sorta like a 6-hour round trip to view Ishtar or attend a George Jones concert.

/Now mulling over an offer to the Feb. 20 tilt-seats are 2nd row on the goal line.
/TVo deserved a better fate last night.

Have you been to the arena? Seen the Caps play in away arena? Go for the experience and the tailgating, as well as the hockey! Also, Capsroadcrew and other Caps fans will be there for that game so like usual, plenty of Caps fans should be in attendance.

by sk84fun_dc on Jan 21, 2012 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

I have been to the arena. I attended a Canes/Thrashers game a coupla years ago and also some playoff games during the Stanley Cup season. The SC games were in the spring (did you know this thing sometimes goes into June?), so some tailgating did occur. The whole experience was enjoyable, but was frankly somewhat dispassionate for me since I had no rooting interest in either team. Dynamite seats somewhat mitigated the fact that the Washingtons were not involved. I’m sure it would be fun to commiserate with some fellow Caps fans- my comments about last night referred to the team’s performance and the subsequent long way home should I have attended. I appreciate your thoughts.

by Acer Jonesy's Laughker on Jan 21, 2012 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, I recognized the context of your comments and yes, it would have been unpleasant to watch last night’s game and have a drive to and from (been there, done that, not fun.)

Glad you’ve been there and shockingly, I’ve seen NHL hockey live and in person in June, it does happen; maybe someday again it will be the Caps playing!

Anyway, wanted you to know there would be other Caps fans around and likely tailgating if you make the trek.

by sk84fun_dc on Jan 21, 2012 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

Let me know if you do come. Even after last night’s debacle, I’m planning to try to get to that game. Lots of Caps fans were there last night, though the weather precluded any tailgating. My section was about 40% caps fans.

by brooksengr on Jan 21, 2012 7:15 PM EST up reply actions

Can’t expect much from a team when 4 of their starting 6 defenseman have less than 200 games experience in the NHL, and 2 of them have less then 30. 2 centers have less then 100 games as well. No wonder they can’t get the puck out of their own end and often look lost and are inconsistent. That is how a young team plays.

by over_head on Jan 21, 2012 10:16 AM EST reply actions

That is what I was thinking as well. Sometimes you can see the gears turning in their heads as to what to do with the puck in each situation. A hesitation each time. They are obviously trying to do what they have been told. But that does not explain the veterans’ confusion. I don’t understand why they cannot carry the puck into the zone and shoot. Particularly Semin last night. Why did he hold on to the puck to get a perfect pass, only to lose the opportunity for a shot, a pass, and often the puck itself? Isn’t a hard shot on net worth more than a pass or dump that results in loss of possession?

by KSR17 on Jan 21, 2012 10:36 AM EST up reply actions

As you probably know, if a hockey player has to think much about what he must do in a particular situation odds are things will not turn out well. That is not meant as an insult to hockey players as I is one ;) I could guess that Dale has asked them to chip and dump much more often and that is not a style they are comfortable playing. But they should be able to adjust. Semin? I have no idea what is in that dudes head, I am thinking it is puppies and rainbows most of the time.

by over_head on Jan 21, 2012 7:41 PM EST up reply actions

Interesting point. I don’t think of this team as young anymore because it’s stars aren’t young anymore. However, this team still has a ton of youth right now.

How many teams have as many or more players with less than 164 games? (roughly 2 years experience). How are they playing and what does their records look like?

How did the Caps get to the point where the development pipeline is almost empty, the stars are in the middle of their careers and the team is still inexperienced in too many positions?

by HateOffSeason on Jan 21, 2012 10:41 AM EST up reply actions

I compared their d core from last night to Boston’s d core from Thursday night. The caps average games played by defenseman was around 300, Boston’s around 500. Probably doesn’t mean much as I did not take it any further, but my guess would be an average of 300 games would be toward the bottom of the league. But, as I said, I did not go back and check all teams.

Isn’t that what their D corps looked like when they were tearing up the league?

Please, call me F&B.

by Rob Parker on Jan 21, 2012 5:11 PM EST up reply actions   2 recs

Probably. It appears to me they are being asked to do more under DH’s system. When they get the puck now they do not have someone that has blown the zone and is already at center ice waiting for a stretch pass. Honestly, I have no idea what is going on. Lots of standing around and lots of turning the puck over trying to rim it or push it around the boards. I just noticed the lack of experience last night. It was the first time I really considered it as part of the problem. Guess I really wasn’t paying attention.

by over_head on Jan 21, 2012 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

Having more players in the zone as options for an outlet pass is generally easier on the D than forcing them to make stretch passes.

Release the Mackan!

by Killer_Carlson on Jan 21, 2012 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

True. But the wings are playing much lower in the defensive zone. Opposing teams defense does not appear to worry much about a quick break out and they hold their points. No backing off. When everyone on the ice is below the tops of the face off circles that sort of cuts down on one’s passing lanes ;). Add in players that seem to stand still and you may have a problem. An easier first pass to a wing on the boards that is being pinched by the defense and does not have an option for a chip to a moving wing or center is not going to lead to a good break out. Maybe a chip out of the zone that leads to more puck possession for the opposing team.

That is just what I am seeing, I am certainly not an expert. My non expert opinion is the Caps problem (other then a lack of experience) is an inability to quickly and cleanly get out of their own zone.

by over_head on Jan 21, 2012 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks for a clear explanation in English to a novice!

by KSR17 on Jan 21, 2012 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

Personally I think the problems aren’t really systems related. Most teams keep their wingers low and break out from there. The Caps – both the D and the wings – just don’t seem to be able to make quick decisions and accurate passes under pressure, and thus they can’t get a clean break out with possession.

Really this isn’t anything new for this team. They’ve struggled to get out of their own zone for years (it was the biggest reason for their playoff loss to PIT in 2009). The difference is that in the past they’ve had Mike “one-man breakout” Green out there so that at least for around half the game they’d have a competent breakout.

I had a dream that the Caps made a blockbuster deal. It was a three-way trade. Semin was involved.

This is how much I read Japers: In the dream, I hadn’t checked here for the entire day, so the top post was already talking about the ramifications of the deal. I was frantically scrolling down so I could read the actual details, who went where, etc.

Why would you wanna trade Semin. When Boudreau was here he didn’t hold anybody accountable for there actions so it was a free for all on the ice and the locker room, remember when Hunter benched Semin for 2 games and then he came back and played like a mad man.Hunter will turn him around if not trade him.You wanna point your finger at Semin, well let me telly you that there is 19 other guys on the team that need to step it up. This team has maybe 21/2 lines that come to skate. We have players that just aren’t ready for theNHL like Perreault,Beagle, and Eakin, sure they show signs of being good but no consistency.Ward is a huge disappointment ,Knuble’s time has passes,Halpren is good on the faceoffs but not much else,Hamrik is slow and Ovie is a lost cause!

I can’t help wondering if it’s time to send MP down to Hershey. One of the Caps needs right now is a 4th line that can be depended upon, and I still haven’t seen the consistency from MP that would suggest that he will ever be a viable NHLer. When Backstrom gets back, the 4th line should be Hendricks-Halpern-?, and I don’t think MP is suited to fill that last spot. I think it’s time to give another one of the Bears a chance.

Failure is always an option.

by timmyv38 on Jan 21, 2012 12:21 PM EST reply actions

The only problem with sending MP back down to Hershey is the fact that the Caps need to put him on waivers.

Really? Is this he first time MP is eligible?

by Yoshietree on Jan 21, 2012 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

Beagle and Perreault are both subject to waivers to be assigned to the minors this season, unlike last season. Perreault is not subject to re-entry waivers as he’s on a two-way contract so if he was put on waivers and cleared and was assigned, he could be recalled.

Of course, for those who view things the way timmyv38 does, it shouldn’t be a concern either because you view it as he won’t be claimed or you don’t care if he is claimed. As usual, it’s hard to know how things would go, just in the last week Repik cleared and Yip didn’t.

by sk84fun_dc on Jan 21, 2012 12:38 PM EST up reply actions

(a two-way contract on which he makes $105,000 or less in the AHL being the reason he wouldn’t be subject to re-entry waivers)

by sk84fun_dc on Jan 21, 2012 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

How’s that a problem? Would it really be a loss if he got claimed?

by timmyv38 on Jan 21, 2012 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

Generally, the team hates to lose an asset for no return.

"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."

by gfcaps fan on Jan 21, 2012 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

True, but it would be worth it to lose him if the team is improved by it. He was a late round draft pick, so the team isn’t losing much value there, and he hasn’t shown the kind of skill a player his size needs to succeed in the NHL. I’d be surprised if he was claimed. Plus, the team has lost a number of assets for no return recently – mostly AHL-level players like MP.

Failure is always an option.

by timmyv38 on Jan 21, 2012 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Allowing a player to leave via free agency is not equivalent to losing (via waiver claim) a player whose rights you still own.

You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!

by EmilyB on Jan 21, 2012 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

It’s the same result though. If there was any way to get value for MP in a trade, I’d take that in a heartbeat. I just don’t see it being worth keeping him on the Caps anymore – he’s had plenty of chances and hasn’t done anything with them. He’s doing the same thing this season that he’s done in the past – 5 of his 8 points were in his first 5 games, with 3 points in the last 23. It’s time to give someone else a shot.

Failure is always an option.

by timmyv38 on Jan 21, 2012 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

You missed half my statement. “The skill a player his size needs”. The guys anywhere near his size who have been able to make it in the NHL are much more skilled – guys like MSL or Briere. If MP was bigger or more physical, it would be less of an issue – but a player that small needs more skill to compete.

I have a completely unresearched and quite possibly wrong theory that part of the damage inflicted by concussions is related to swelling and that’s why it takes a bit for the symptoms to manifest, and why a player might be cleared to keep playing after a bad hit.

I really wish they wouldn’t put freshly-concussed players into planes.

It’s as good as anything else, probably. The one thing I think we all understand at this point is that not all concussions manifest themselves immediately. So if you see a player take a headshot, you probably should sit him, regardless of what he says. Hey, isn’t that what the “quiet room” is supposed to be for? Did we forget all about that already?

Just caught the end of Boston/Rangers game. In OT, Ference nailed McDonough, got a major and ejected. Rangers win with 3.6 seconds left. I couldn’t really decide who I wanted to win the game, other than the meteor, but that hit made it go Rangers.

Not sure how I feel about that hit. I think it was more McDonagh’s awkward contact with the boards than anything else. I would have given the minor for boarding and nothing else.

I disagree, Ference was behind McDonagh the whole time and gave him a healthy hit into the boards. I’m fine with the major. It was much more deserved than Lidstrom’s major for hitting from behind.

Yes, The Team does suck if #19 and #52 are out.

Seeing a lot of crying about the state of the team, but with Backstrom and Green out, yeah, the team is terrible and wouldn’t stand a chance in the playoffs. What team would be good with just 1 #3 center and 3 #4 centers.

The team is flawed in their construction relying on wings to drive the play and not having enough centers. Doesn’t mean that Hunter is not an NHL coach as some have said.

by kovachs on Jan 21, 2012 3:49 PM EST reply actions

The offense has been about what you would expect if an AHL team came up and played in the NHL

The Defense has been at least NHL level, the offense has been terrible, and I dont think Backstrom or Green could really fix it. The Good news, we will have tons of cap space to work with this offseason, and should be good next year if GMGM pushes the right buttons

More than this year but I still say we don’t exactly have tons of cap space. I presume that Sasha and Knuble are gone which gives us between 7-8 million to work with.

The question is …. will they make Green a qualifying offer and, of course, it all depends on his health.

And will they keep Wideman or not. Do they figure they’re better off giving Wideman the raise he would desire or can they replace his productivity some other way?

Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.

by CapsFan75 on Jan 21, 2012 4:30 PM EST up reply actions

We will have about 12million if we QO Green, and keep Carlson

we could open up about 3 if we trade Schultz, as we should if we dont plan on playing him. You can also put Poti on LTIR, which brings up up to about 15 million to play with, take away Schultz your aproaching 20 million to play with. What I am really hoping happens is the Neuvirth and Holtby can restablish themselfs, so we can save a ton of cap space with goalies. I think that you have to keep Wiedman, because can we really thing that Green can stay healthy for a full season.

MOAR SEVERINO!

by jeff550 on Jan 21, 2012 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

I presume your $12million was assuming that the Caps did not keep Wideman. Since adding the salaries of Semin, Knuble, Wideman would come close to that figure.

My earlier calculation has assumed a lower salary for Knuble than $2 M since I had assumed he took a pay cut — guess not as much as I thought. Still, the only definite “goners” at UFA time by my reckoning would be Semin & Knuble for 8.7 million.

Figure Schultz (and his 3 Million) will be gone since why keep him around if they’re not going to play him. Poti will be on LTIR only if the Caps would exceed the cap but, knowing them, they likely will, unless they think it’s a rebuilding year.

Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.

by CapsFan75 on Jan 21, 2012 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

That is what we have if we dont keep any UFA's, and dont make any trades

I think that we should only Keep Wiedman of the UFA’s, and that we should try to bring in a few fowards that can score goals(y’all know I like Doan and Parise) Im hoping that GMGM can also figure out how to get some other lower end pieces too, but that would be bonus

MOAR SEVERINO!

by jeff550 on Jan 21, 2012 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

Now we know your methodology. I was going probabilistic to some degree with my calculation.

As great of a player as Parise is and as much as I admire him and consider him the kid that every parent dreams of having, would the Caps acquisition of him be the best strategy? I’m sure they would have to cough up over $7 Million a year for his services and we would be back to our age old problem of having too much salary tied up with wingers. Doan is likely to stay with Phoenix, as long as the Coyotes stay there, assuming my information is correct.

Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.

by CapsFan75 on Jan 21, 2012 5:07 PM EST up reply actions

I think that a Parise deal has to be for the right price/term

but I really see him as the only one who can replace Semin, as we already have a problem with our offense. I know that Doan is really more wishful thinking by me than realistic. I havent looked at possible trade candiates at all, and dont know the FA class enough to say who else might work. Just throwing out that we have the fexiblity to really give this team a different look

MOAR SEVERINO!

by jeff550 on Jan 21, 2012 5:23 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that Parise would probably be the only guy among UFA’s who could replace Semin.

Would he come to the Caps or be more likely to return to the Devils?

Unless management concludes that Semin is no longer a 30 goal a year scorer and figure they could find someone cheaper who scores around 20 goals a year; i.e. another Brouwer type.

On the performance of the Southeast this year, might this actually be the year where the “winner” of the Southeast ends up with a worse record than the 8th seed? It’s fairly close to that situation right now, with Toronto in 9th place having only 1 less point than the Caps.

I keep telling myself that the Caps are a better team than what they’ve shown this year but……

I’d say, time to make a few tweaks to the divisional realignment as it currently stands. Granted, it’s normally not recommended to realign only due to having too many bad teams in a division but it will probably be temporary anyhow until the next collective bargaining agreement is signed. But I would be making the same recommendations on realignment anyway, regardless of how the teams are currently doing in the standings but having one division that’s worse than the others is not really good for hockey.

My proposal: Move the Flyers to the Southeast. So, the new alignment would be: Phillie, Washington, Florida, Tampa, and Carolina.

Move Columbus out of the Central and put then in the Atlantic Division instead. And hopefully they can develop a rivalry with Pittsburgh.

For the Pacific: move Vancouver to the Pacific to replace Dallas. The other teams: SJ, LA, Anaheim, and Phoenix would remain there

Northeast (which would be a misnomer now) would contain Minnesota, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, and Colorado.

Central would contain Dallas, St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit, and Nashville.

(If there’s ever expansion and they add 2 teams in Western locations, I’d then recommend the 2 conference, 8 division approach and move Detroit to the East.)

Proud member of the Popsicle Division of the Cupcake Conference.

We know they’d bitch, as would the rest of the Atlantic Division. Which is why we got stuck with the Florida teams being with the Canadian teams.

But, why should the Atlantic Division teams always get their way and stay together no matter what? Granted, there are a lot of good and powerful teams there but what’s good for the Atlantic Division is not necessarily the best thing for hockey as a whole. And having a horrible SE that includes a team in the Central time zone is not my idea of good for hockey. There would probably be some people that would propose substituting Columbus in the SE instead of Phillie. At least Columbus would be playing other teams in the Eastern Time Zone but they’d be playing bad teams.

Not to mention that shortie that they scored. And a few other short handed scoring opportunities for Carolina.

It’s downright pathetic to be -1 in the scoring differential for OUR power plays. And the fact that they had as many goals on our PP as we had SHOTS!

I knew that the game was lost cause for us as soon as they scored that shortie. . Given that the Caps have had a horrible track record as of late when giving up the first goal
