Calm down everyone. I have no idea what’s going on with Hunter’s strategy either, but we’re only down by two and this is only one game in a long season. Saying it sucks over and over doesn’t help.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

Well, this game is over, but we can have hope for the future ones.

I’m not sure the game is over. Not optimistic, but I recall a game in Columbus recently where they looked just as bad.

I’m just becoming increasingly convinced that he’s not a good NHL coach. Unfortunately. Though I still have a certain level of hope that it’s due to the difficulty of changing systems mid-season.

No, it’s certainly difficult. But I have yet to see a very great change in defensive performance (full disclosure: don’t know the stats off the top of my head), and the offense has completely dried up. The Caps weren’t a great possession team before his tenure, but 20+ games of getting dominated territorially is not exactly something I consider inspiring. Though I haven’t completely written him off yet.

Nothing said on this message board helps anything really. That shouldn’t stop anyone from venting though.
And seriously, do you really think this is “one game” in a long season? Sure – on the surface it is – but really what it is is another game played like too many before this one with this core group of playerrs.
2011-2012...here we go again.
Yes, and that’s what’s so frustrating. I don’t see any progress. If the Caps had some pressure; some semblance of offense I wouldn’t be as irritated.
These games to get some room on top, to get the team playing cohesively, aren’t happening.
Still, one never knows what the future brings.
My old Caps could come back down 3 in Chicago and win.
Let’s Go Caps!

Because saying over and over again “this sucks this sucks this is stupid Dale sucks the team sucks” is not productive. It’s way more productive (relatively speaking, because the bar is pretty low) to remind ourselves that we’re fans and it could be worse.
Honestly, I like this place – wouldn’t contribute if I didn’t – but reading those kind of comments on repeat makes me wonder why you guys even bother typing it out. And it wears me out and makes me wonder why I even watch hockey and spend so much time/money/energy on this team if it sucks so much.
The definition of being a Caps fan is watching the same team over and over and expecting different results.
But you half-full guys seem to think that your way of thinking is the only way. Isn’t it possible that the constant viewing of this team through rose colored glass is just as annoying?
2011-2012...here we go again.
I assure you, the rose-colored thinking almost always comes out – or at least gets ramped up – in reaction to the increase in negativity.
The definition of being a Caps fan is watching the same team over and over and expecting different results.

Fair enough.
First, and foremost, I see good goaltending. That’s a start. I know that we’ve been beaten in the past by goaltenders alone. I’m hopeful.
Second, we’re missing 19 and 52. Thus, I’m not willing to give up on the season.
Third, I like the defense overall. Low GAA lately.
Fourth, I’m hoping, perhaps against hope, that they’ll figure out the offense. I’ve got nothing else to hang my hat on.
Nice guys finish first, but sometimes the season is awfully long.

And see? If the negative comments were detailed and thought-provoking like that, I wouldn’t mind them as much. Hell, if the positive comments (mine included) were as detailed and thought-provoking as that maybe others wouldn’t mind them.
The definition of being a Caps fan is watching the same team over and over and expecting different results.
Also you characterize every negative comment as categorically being useless and lacking substance. Apparently only people that agree with you can post thought provoking statements.
What kind of fool looks for deep thought provoking insight in GDT where there’s 400 posts a minute? The GDT is for in the moment reactions.

I’ve got no issue with supported optimism, as you are wont to bring, Spidey. I generally agree with your points other than 4 (and to a lesser extent 3).
I don’t like that in the d-zone the Caps have an awful tendency to get hemmed in for long periods of time and have a lot of trouble on the breakout.
And considering how long it’s been since the Caps were good offensively that I’ve long lost hope that they just need to get the bounces.

by Steckel Me Elmo on Jan 20, 2012 8:59 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t agree with your third point. The GAA is low lately because the goalies have been awesome. The D has largely looked like clownshit. They can’t clear the zone and are giving up a ton of scoring chances. For example, the Caps aren’t still in this game because the D has been good.

Anyone else notice Hunter at the timeout? They showed the bench for most of the TO and Hunts didn’t say a word to the team. He just stood there, looking out to the ice. Even though the TO was only called to get a breather, he still needs to be talking to his team every chance he gets. It’ll keep the team focused and maybe get some shots out of them!
My view, as well, but I know some people think not talking in that situation is a positive.
Of note, I was bothered a few games ago during a home game when there was a goal review for the opponent in the later part of the third period and from my viewpoint Johnson and Hunter weren’t talking to the players. I was confident it was going to be a goal from what I had seen and Caps had already used their timeout, so couldn’t figure out why they weren’t coaching/drawing up scenarios. I think it was the TBL game and the Stamkos goal.
Florida game still hasn’t started. Must be a wrench in the works there.

I had 4:06 but most of it was in little 3-6 second chunks, only twice did we have shifts that had more then 20 seconds and our PP only had 20 seconds over the two minutes.
What do I win?

Red Birdie, if you’re still around, I promise a $20 dollar donation for any remaining Caps games this year where they can win after giving up the first goal. I promise.

Which DC sports team has the Most Valuable Players? That would be DC United, a team being pushed out by the city. Help Keep United in DC so they can receive a fair deal on a lease and help develop a path to build a stadium with local investment and incentives.

Giving up a shortie as the first goal of the game on the VERY first power play is a VERY bad way to start. And then again, their track record when giving up the first goal has been very poor under Hunter. (At least they can hold onto leads when they get the lead but when they give up the first goal.

JC,
You are now officially fired from the PP unit — for the time being.
(Okay, I’m being snarky here. And, in the past, I have advocated putting Carlson on the PP at the point. But it may be time to put someone else there, until he gets his act together.)

Fooey! And is Malkin single handedly carrying the Pens on his back as usual?

Sad to say, I sometimes wonder if the Caps would have been better off had they chosen Malkin instead of Ovi. The fact that Malkin’s a center and we’ve been so hurting in centers in recent years.
But I doubt if Malkin could have energized the Caps fan base as Ovi did from 2007-2010. I don’t think he has anywhere near the charisma.
