Good morning all. I was playing Words With Friends with my friend a couple weeks ago and she quit on the last turn right before I could get 500 pts. Well we just finished a rematch last night and I got 502! Justice.

There’s a brandy that originates from Peru called Pisco, although it tastes more like tequilla

Most brandy, being distilled wine, is made from grapes. In fact, it was originally called “brandywine,” which Wikipedia informs me, comes from the Dutch “brandewijn” which means “burnt wine.”

That sounds fun! I enjoyed Blackjack a lot the only time I really gambled in Vegas. If the other people at your table and the dealer are chatty, it can be fun. I’m not so much a fan of slots. That just feels like giving money away, to me. I’d prefer if slots were like arcade games, that happened to pay out every so often.
I never played craps, but it always looked like a fun, social game.
I have always wanted to play craps, but the rules are confusing having never played…I might watch a few rounds and see if I catch on. I plan to pretty much just play blackjack, since the odds aren’t awful, and there seem to be a lot of super cheap tables.
I agree about the slots, if it was a game or something, where skill was involved I would be more inclined to play…but just pulling a lever, it seems like even more dumb luck than anything else.

That was my issue. Craps just seemed really damned confusing. I tried reading descriptions of it, and just never could figure it out. I think reading the description right before going to watch would have been the way to go.
I liked roulette, because it seemed fairly easy to hedge one’s bets, but then I lost all I’d won at blackjack on the roulette wheel at the Hard Rock Casino because 00 came up twice in a row, which sunk my hedging. ;)
I know nothing about craps so it felt like I was throwing money into the trash when I was playing it. Roulette and blackjack were fun though. I played $20 on black for my dad and let it ride until it hit $160. I chickened out, took it, and it still hit black the next spin. Good luck. Get rich.

I know nothing about any kind of gambling other than slots. I’m really hopeless about remembering rules and stuff. I’ve always wanted to actually play at a casino, so if anyone’s game to teach me blackjack or poker… /ducks.
Getting over that intimidation factor can be tough. Many frequent poker players bank on getting first-timers. Although, watching an old regular get busted by some drunk dude at his bachelor party playing poker for the first time is always pretty hilarious.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
Blackjack is really easy to learn. I would suggest playing an online version or getting an app for your phone. There’s strategy and all but I think it’s more fun to find a low dollar table and have some fun with it. And if you’re in a casino you can always ask the people around you. They are usually helpful
by bathwithtoaster on Jan 20, 2012 11:18 AM EST up reply actions
I like to play blackjack, following basic strategy — I play at http://www.hitorstand.net/game_l.html both to hone my strategy abilities and just to play for fun. I think there’s a page there that explains the rules too.

oooh interesting, thanks! I’ll check that out. I’ve always felt like there’s strategy involved in gambling. I vaguely remember someone telling me that I was supposed to do something when I had 2 cards totalling lower than 10 (?). I’m sure there’s tricks to every game. What would I give to be crazy good with memorizing probabilities…
There’s one slot machine that I absolutely adore, because to me it basically is a videogame that sometimes pays out money. Unfortunately, it’s not popular and has been phased out of all the casinos I’ve visited recently. (I’m a slots hipster.)

Tell me your goals allowed were spaced out… otherwise, ick. 6 shots in a short span.
Hope you have gatorade on hand!
they weren’t, those of you who play NHL 12 know games are usually 15-20 minutes and the rules state you must take it directly after the goal, so 6 shots in about 20 minutes. by the time we got to 5 I could barely follow the puck, which led to more goals. no gatorade either, pretty much no chasers at all.

It’ll get passed this time-ish next year when it’s cheaper to buy. MPAA/RIAA aren’t churning the same profit they once were and getting rid of websites they don’t want along with upping fees to Amazon MP3/iTunes will be how it happens.

New congress — Democrats are going to take a beating and lose the senate and take some more losses in the house, congress is going to have a lot of new people that are cheap. Look at how fast Brown was bought up in Massachuessetts, and look at how fast Brown is going to lose his seat from lack of money. Granted Club for Growth isn’t the least bit interested in him (they don’t even seem to be primarying him from the right) as well as his previous bankrollers disappeared too.
In short, it’s happening. This time the lobbyists will get someone with a bit more constitutional know-how to write it instead of the wet dream SOPA/PIPA bill that got trotted out.
My guess is it gets rolled up in DHS or some other national security bill so that it’s more palatable to John and Jane Q. Public reading about the bill.
Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:
Leave me here, and when you want me, sound upon the bugle-horn
much easier to stop a stand-along bill than to try and sink a national security bill or the federal budget (I’ve tried. I failed)
SOPA and PIPA have been such a shitshow from the start. It’s like a case study in how to make sure your legislation doesn’t get passed. I can’t believe they ever thought they’d get this stuff through as stand-alones.

I don’t think the mo3/itunes prices mean much. I don’t use either service, and I know I am not the only one. Besides, from what I understand the way the bill was written, from our talking about itunes or someone posting a link to a stream on a GDT could have lead to the whole site bein shut down, which is an absolute joke.

Etta James' passing shows that I need a life...
So I am reading an article about the passing of Etta James today, and there is a mention of the doctor who was taking care of her before she passed:
Court records show the 73-year-old entertainer also suffered from dementia and kidney failure. She had been under the 24-hour care of Dr. Elaine James, who is unrelated.
All I heard in my head was Joe B. telling me they were unrelated….
Aaaaaaaa!!!

And it has been a very sad week for American Music with the passing of two legends: Etta James, and Johnny Otis, who was the bandleader who discovered Etta….

Question for the baseball fans here – semi-following the supposed wooing of Prince Fielder (who I don’t know much about except that he’s a “star”). As the stories crop up about one team after another dropping out of the race, is he destined to be the Tomas Vokoun of MLB this off-season? Or will having Boras as his agent blunt that?

It’s a good question, because the giant-market teams (Anaheim has Pujols, the Yankees have Teixiera, and the Sox have Gonzalz), don’t need him, and the other two giant-market teams (Dodgers and Mets) are imploding financially. The Fish were prepared to throw a zillion dollars at Pujols, so it wouldn’t shock me if he ends up there. But if it’s not the Nats, I honestly have no idea.
