Jackets’ perspective scoring chances. Five for Ovechkin by his count, three of them on the shift he scored his first on.

From the Caps Degenerate clip:
The Caps that we all know, love, and hate are officially back.
Yes, those Washington Capitals that give no indication whatsoever that they give a flying fuck about the game until the 3rd period. Those Washington Capitals who put together one 5 to 10 minute stretch of disgustingly awesome hockey and have that stretch carry them through the game. The Caps that watch their two Russian superstar snipers light up the scoreboard. The Caps that can snatch victory from the jaws of defeat like it ain’t a ’thang.
Welcome back, Cardiac Caps.
A good explanation as to why their advance stats are bad but they still win. This team is an example of when you have highly skilled players that are “on” you don’t need to count on a total 60 minute dominance.

Ehh, not really. It’s good shooting at this point, probably luck. The Caps during Ovechkin’s three best years pumped a ton of rubber on net. During the first two the advanced stats were top-four, during the third slightly above average score tied but elite when leading or trailing with a very strong goaltending performance (three goalies north of 920 at even strength) and a shooting performance that ranks among the best ever, considering era. Don’t think that’ll be replicated. At any rate, it looks like they’re better trailing, which is a step in the right direction.

Yeah, I am not so crazy about the write-up either. First, although I have been frequently criticized for bitching about certain contracts and team efforts, I have never – never – “hated” the Caps. Just the opposite. I have been one of their biggest fans for over 25 years; it doesn’t mean, though, we can’t get angry when they don’t play up to their abilities or display sufficient effort. Second, just because Ovi and Sasha are getting back on track again does not mean we can rest. We might be dependent on them but we also have to get some additional secondary scoring…fast. Finally, when you look at the various up-to-date team statistics, the Caps are a middle-of-the-road team still. I continue to think we still should be a top, say, 6 or 7 team and we need to start putting it all together.
I have never – never – "hated" the Caps. Just the opposite. I have been one of their biggest fans for over 25 years; it doesn’t mean, though, we can’t get angry when they don’t play up to their abilities or display sufficient effort.
Maybe it is just me then. But, for example, during the 2nd intermission of Game 4 vs. the Rangers last April, I certainly felt like I hated the Caps. I didn’t leave the bar, but I thought the game was over. And when they came back and won the game I went bananas. But, I also still hated them and thought to myself “Why couldn’t they have just won 5-0 and played a full 60?”
I felt eerily similar on Saturday night vs. Columbus……..
by CapsDegenerate on Jan 2, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions
Interesting. I actually have similar feelings; I just wouldn’t call it ‘hate.’ I think these are just minor semantic interpretations. Clearly, we both have a lot of affection for the team. Perhaps it has more to do with how important ‘winning’ is, then. That is, are our feelings totally engaged with the team just when they are winning? I don’t know you but I suspect the answer is ‘no’ since you have been a fan for a long time as I have. Speaking for me, I always ‘liked’ them even when they were losing because they had good guys – eg. Oates, Langway, Johannson, Gartner, Iafrate, etc. – AND they hustled and tried. What has gotten to me lately have been the Tampa crap-out in the playoffs last year, and the Dallas, Toronto, earlier Buffalo games, for example this year, when they just seemed to lay down. I wish Ovi or Knuble or someone would have gone up and down the bench and kicked some butt or exhibited some emotion. In the Columbus game, by contrast, they didn’t lay down…Ovi played great and, by his example, the team picked up its efforts and energy in the 3rd. While the victory was great; the point was they seemed to be finally having some spirit.
In the Dallas game the Dallas team elevated their game after the Caps scored. The Caps elevated theirs in the third period of the Columbus game. The push back by the Caps was great. But what also helped was separating Ovi and Nicky, making it harder for Columbus to defend. Twas a small but effective adjustment.

I try to factor in performance, effort, and result into how I feel about the team. Obviously, like many, I’m probably guilty of some “revisionist history” based on the result of a game. But, if they have a hard-fought loss I’ll support them and if they pull a win out their rears I try to call them out on it as I simultaneously cheer.
I don’t want to be “that guy” who has a hard line “Cup or bust” mentality, but that’s how I feel. This team is capable of doing it and it is time they meet expectations.
Now, what happens if they make it to the ECF or lose in the SCF? I’d probably be thrilled it wasn’t another 1st or 2nd round crash out.
But, in the end, there’s only one thing this franchise hasn’t done and I’d like to see it happen……
As for the 80’s teams, I have very fond memories of them with the painful * that they never got “it” done either……..I don’t really recall effort being an issue though…..and I agree that there are very likable players from that era…..
As for me, I’m not going anywhere. I watch the Caps on TV win or lose. It’s what I do……….it’s what i know. I really am too old to take up other hobbies…….

Or how about thinking outside the box and having the game played on the National Mall? Imagine the beauty of the Capitals and their yet-to-be-determined opponents skating on the Reflecting Pool, with the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial serving as backdrops.
Sometimes I think Gormley doesn’t think through his arguments. He just throws stuff out there. Sure having the WC on the mall would be gorgeous and timeless? The stuff of fantasy. But the logistics are far more complicated than just thinking out of the box, beginning with the fact that the mall isn’t under the control of DC., that the city doesn’t have the same kind of control over land usage that say Philly or New York does.
Knuble: "I am what I am. I play well with good players."
On his milestone: "It's going to be like unwrapping a birthday present. Then the day after you're kind of like [sighs]....Now you just have to keep going."
I think Gormley tends to be sensationlist, or at least his headline writer does if it’s not him. To be fair, in this instance, I think a player brought it up first (Halpern), but we’ve already been through the whole Mall idea and know it won’t fly. Even if you could get it through the Park Service, etc., I have to imagine the cost of temporary facilities would far exceed the return on investment, unless you have governments subsidizing it.
"The Caps fan doesn't say, 'is the glass half full' or 'is the glass half empty'. He wonders when the glass is going to spill."
True, and I really doubt "we the people " agreeing to subsidize a non American sport.
But my, would it be gorgeous a game in the Mall.

That blog has an important thing that is part of the reason why there isn’t much opportunity for the West teams to have many. As I have mentioned before there are not many teams in the West that are close like the east teams are. Before I was talking about fans not being able to travel but it isn’t just fans as Ted pointed out in his blog even the road games are for season ticket holders. How many Sharks season ticket holders would travel all the way to Detroit or vice versa? There are very few places in the West that could hold it not because of the weather, they did one in Vegas long before they had this technology, but because there isn’t a team that is close enough with a big enough market. Even a Ducks, LA one is not likely because it will only bring in one TV market. The issue is having 2 teams from two decent sized markets that are far enough away to be different markets but close enough that the season ticket holders from the road team can come without it being a huge issue.

Apologies for the case of the Mondays. Corrected #Caps lines, 8-21-20; 90-19-22; 25-15-42; 26-85-83. Semin isn’t on the ice for practice.

He did skate off gingerly at one point in Sat. game and it was noted by announcers. I go to practice about once a week and no other player spends as much time stretching the groin area as he does after practice. I think last season’s injury is still an issue. Speculation, yes, but it appears that way.
Are you not entertained?
I thought that was Brooks that skated off looking hurt when Ovi had his first goal (at least Locker mentioned it).

I wouldn’t put this story in the same line as the Green concussion(s) last year, mainly because she does reference a source this time. Whether her source was telling the truth, that we don’t know.

My father’s favorite player while I was growing up, and one of the first goalies I really watched trying to figure out the mechanics of the game as a young six year old. Probably explains why I was so mediocre.

Via Driving Play, presented without further comment:
Let’s take as an example my favorite team, the New Jersey Devils. They are having quite a bizarre season so far – 8-1 in shootouts, their record in regulation is a mere 10-15, but right now they’re holding on to a playoff spot. More strange is their special teams play – they’ve scored a mere 17 power play goals, while allowing a whopping total of 11 short handed goals. Yet while shorthanded, they’ve only allowed 10 goals and have scored 7 short handed goals themselves. In addition, they’ve allowed 4 empty net goals and have scored none at even strength.

On game day today, thinking back on our trip to Pittsburgh a year ago for Hockey Diaries: Winter Classic 2011 and probably our favorite made-for-radio quote about skating outdoors, from then-Penguin forward Michael Rupp.
MEDIACHAMELEON: "Can you describe to someone on the radio what it feels like to skate outside, what are the sensations that are different to you? What would you say?"
RUPP: "Did you ever go swimming in the nude? It’s kind of similar to that, I guess. It’s (laughs) it just feels, I don’t know, it feels… you just, it’s just… it’s freeing experience. Like you’re just in there, and you got the air around you, you can see it, it just… it’s a pretty cool feeling. I guess that’s a bad example, but it’s what I got."

“Oh, and when you saw that hit, from David Steckel, you wondered about Crosby. But he is back for the third period, Pierre has spoken with him.” “Sidney’s fine and I’ve also talked with assistant coach Tony Granato he said don’t worry about Sidney Crosby; one hit’s not going to put him out of the game. Crosby’s stretching out right now and he’ll be ready to go.”
Why the Penguins have been teflon on this, I will never know. Frankly, it’s the media’s fault. No one really questions this and then that idiot Farber rehashes whether the hit was accidental or not.

So Russia vs. the Czechs this evening at the World Juniors. Lets hope Mrazek’s in goal and that Kuznetsov does to him what team USA couldn’t: not allowing Mrazek to celebrate like a dickbag.
Just signing in to post the schedule here for those who didn’t know, 2 games today. I posted the rest of the tourney schedule in the fanpost.
Medal Round Schedule (eastern time)
Monday, January 2 Quarterfinals (both games scheduled to be shown on NHLN in the US; TSN in Canada)
5pm Finland vs. Slovakia
9pm Russia vs. Czech Rep. (TSN coverage starts at 8:30)
What a surprise (not!). Another Staal makes his season debut in the Winter Classic.
