Aww. Friends of ours just tried to adopt a shelter dog. It was so unruly that it flunked obdience training. Bye bye, doggie. I don’t know if they’re going to try again.

They’ve almost always had a dog; after the latest one died last year they said they weren’t going to get another, but when their son was home for winter break he had convinced them to get another. I don’t know if they’re going to try again, though.

Kind of weird if you think about it how Catholicism was considered a Liability when JFK was running for president. People don’t think twice about it now. True, but usually the GOP nomination process never lasts that long.

I can see Perry dropping out after SC, leaving basically just Romney, Paul, Santorum, and Gingrich.

Gingrich will take a few more states to give up when he runs out of money. Santorum will take about as long when he realizes Iowa was a fluke and only nicks will vote for him. And Ron paul will be Ron paul, the scab in Romney’s ass for months. But at that point Romney won’t need to campaign against him

Everyone thinks Romney is likely to lose.

I think it’s going to be REALLY close

by Brainumbc on Jan 19, 2012 10:19 AM EST up reply actions

I agree, it’s going to be really close. A lot of it is going to swing on stuff completely out of Obama and Romney’s control, like whether Europe decides to implode with their debt crisis.

An analyst said the person most important to Obama’s re-election was Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, and whether she could keep the debt crisis from spiraling out of control.

by Joran on Jan 19, 2012 10:34 AM EST up reply actions

It’ll be close, but as it stands I don’t think sheer money alone can get Romney in the WH, oddly enough. Plus Obama has the backing of most money sources, so at best Wall Street will just hedge their bet with a token amount for Romney.

Democrats lose the senate this year though — lots of seats up. They’ll end up with ~45 senators or something, not counting Lieberman.

Here’s my bigoted theory. In the future, we’ll see a lot more democrats than republicans running things.

General Welfare stance:
Repubs: Quit whining and get a job. It’s your fault your on the street.
Dems: More unemployment insurance! More welfare

The income gap is widening. More and more people are making less and less money, hence more and more people are in the need fore welfare, hence more and more people as time goes on will eventually vote Democrat.

Granted there are a lot of stupid poor people who fall for “exciting new things” like the tea party, which explains the republican takeover in 2010, but people will eventually realize that if they’re poor, republicans ain’t going to do shit for them

This isn’t a rant about being pro or anti-welfare. This is just my observation and prediction.

by Brainumbc on Jan 19, 2012 10:44 AM EST up reply actions

At some point, we need a national dialogue about how much government we want and how we’re going to pay for it.

We’ve spent too much time half-assing it by running up the national debt. Hey, fighting two wars + a gigantic tax cut + senior drug coverage + worldwide recession leads to huge deficits, imagine that!

P.S. I’d look more at the demographic shifts in race. Hispanics are a growing population and the Republicans are doing a pretty crappy job of recruiting them.

by Joran on Jan 19, 2012 10:56 AM EST up reply actions

Deficit doesn’t matter too much; especially now. For all the talk of the deficit being A Bad Thing, the dollar is stronger than ever. People are buying our debt for less than pennies on the dollar.

I agree that short-term, we have no debt issue; people are still willing to loan us money at outrageously low interest rates. The only reason S&P downgraded our debt was because they fear the Tea Party is crazy enough to have us default on our debt.

Long-term, the way we’re spending money is not sustainable, but small changes here and there should be enough; biggest issues are an aging population and health care costs skyrocketing.

by Brainumbc on Jan 19, 2012 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

Capitalism itself isn’t any more sustainable than deficit spending. Why worry about the latter when the former is just as intrinsically linked? The second we stop spending imaginary money (the vast majority of our debt is held by US institutions, money that doesn’t exist other than on a spreadsheet) then the global economy collapses. If we stop spending imaginary money, eventually capitalism can no longer find enough cheap labor to sustain continually increasing profits. Just pick your poison, one or the other will end it all as we know it.

I dunno.

Cheaper transportation methods. More efficient systems. Less waste. Ability to save enough profit to make larger purchases and receive discounts.

Finite resources is a problem, but it doesn’t have much to do with capitalism. We could all be a bunch of communist anarchists killing deers in the woods. As long as we just Fuckin’… the resources are gonna’ run out.

by Brainumbc on Jan 19, 2012 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not saying the alternative can avoid it, I’m just saying capitalism is going to end and it makes the notion of sovereign debt being a problem is silly.

Transportation will never be cheaper; oil is the most efficient possible resource to be used for transportation and we’re at the point now that we’ve used over half of the total oil on Earth. Batteries, fuel cell or other storage mediums can’t match the efficiency/cost of oil. Exotic technology is too far off to even be gauged at efficiency. In short, the people alive now are on the slide down toward a post-oil existence and we’re the last batch to experience cheap, plentiful energy.

Transportation will never be cheaper;

It’s cheaper if you find a closer and closer places to build factories and hubs to decrease the distance between manufacturing and end user. It’s cheaper if you find more efficient ways to transport goods (see the new boeing 787)

Do think that even the tiniest increase in transportation or energy efficiency isn’t going to pay off? Your average supermarket runs on a 2% profit margin. Imagine how long of a ways a tiny bit of wiggle room goes.

by Brainumbc on Jan 19, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

If it was cheaper, the factories wouldn’t be in China or Mexico to provide goods to the US or EU.

Not necessarily. Oil may be going down, but natural gas and coal are still plentiful and natural gas prices are plummeting thanks to fracking. Of course, this is probably contributing to global warming and more than likely screwed with that.

Hopefully technology will improve by the time that these start running out. I’m using a cell phone with more computing power than the entire Apollo project, so maybe we’ll figure something out.

by Joran on Jan 19, 2012 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

The new boeing 787 consumes 20% less fuel than the 767.

Every 10-20 years there’s going to be some kind of breakthrough which let humans go farther, longer on the same amount of fuel which should decrease transportation costs, if not make them go down.

Eventually we’re going to find a way to use nuclear or solar power to take over

by Brainumbc on Jan 19, 2012 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

it consumes 20% less fuel than the 767, but uses quite a bit more oil to be produced now. It’s basically admitting that energy now is so much cheaper than energy will be. When it comes time to replace the 787, those sort of gains won’t be available because of the exorbitant cost to create something even more efficient.

Nuclear power isn’t the answer because we have nowhere to place the waste in America. France lucked out and has better geological features for long-term waste storage; something that doesn’t exist in America due to fault lines and aquifers.

Solar has issues because of massive space requirements; it’s generation ability is effective, but only as an “adder” rather than a primary source. Wind has issues, too, but it’s more cost effective than solar. Geothermal is the next best bet, especially in America due to the aforementioned fault lines. The absolute best is hydro, but, that comes with significant ecological harm and in a world where potable water may become a scarce resource you’d be loathe to destroy communities “downwind” of a hydro plant by locking away their water.

So you’re saying it will use more fuel to make than 40+ years of the fuel it will save flying?

by Brainumbc on Jan 19, 2012 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

I’m saying it is cheaper to use more energy to produce it now than it will if it was less efficient and burned more fuel in the future but used less energy to be built. It’s admitting that energy isn’t as expensive now as it will be.

Nuclear requires a lot of infrastructure spending too, which has dried up thanks to Fukashima along with the emphasis on renewables. Storage of nuclear waste is more a political issue than a technological one. Alternative energies are definitely having some issues in competing economically with coal/natural gas at the moment.

I’m still waiting for the fusion plants I was promised in all my sci-fi books ;)

On the plus side, the United States seems to have hit our peak oil use period, and from now on, our demand should drop. China and India are probably going to offset those drops though.

by Joran on Jan 19, 2012 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

Natural Gas and coal require oil to be usable, and more oil is used to pull those from the ground than it does to pull oil from the ground. Plus there’s very little infrastructure for NG (most of it is moved around by oil-burning methods) and coal power plants require deliveries something like every 3 days by diesel burning trains.

Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:
Leave me here, and when you want me, sound upon the bugle-horn

by sydtron on Jan 19, 2012 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

Right, but we’re not going to be running out of oil anytime soon. Oil may be getting more expensive and will keep getting more expensive, we won’t ever see $1 gas anymore, but we won’t go from LOTS O’OIL to NO OIL drastically. Expensive oil makes some non-economical oil fields actually make sense, like the oil sands in Canada.

We’ve adjusted to $3 gas, we’ll adjust further.

by Joran on Jan 19, 2012 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

The problem with the oil sands in Canada is that there isn’t enough water to really make use of the majority of it; especially as climate change (be it man made or not) shifts farmland northward, you won’t see people clamoring for water to be wasted on oil when food and drinking water is scarce.

We’ll see what happens if/when the global economy turns around because the second it does, $4-5 gas becomes the norm. Even in the recession, oil use is still climbing and when it turns around and China/India start clamoring for more and more oil we’ll see prices skyrocket again.

It’s not just transportation, either. From the wallet in your pocket to the rebar in the building all use oil, and not just for moving it from where it is produced to where it ends up.

Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:

Republicans are doing a pretty crappy job of recruiting them.

That’s why I’m not particularly fond of Obama. I’ll vote for him, but you know by the timing that any time he does anything to “help immigrants” it’s just to win votes. He doesn’t represent CHANGE for shit. he’s just another lying sack of shit politician.

I’ll give him credit for having the balls to tackle things like health care that even Clinton backed off of.

Ron Paul is the only person that represents real change, whether or not you think its good change or bad change is a different story.

Yea but it’s funny how some denominations are still weary of other denominations.

That night I went but left after an hour because I was coming down with … wait for it.. a fever. No joke. I told my friends I’d be back at like 3am or so to pick them up. I got back and saw all the Cops and shit.

Word was back then the dude was drunk as hell, had his g/f break up with him and he freaked out and got all belligerent throughout the night that they had to kick him out. If he was on K + booze, that would make sense. Terrible combination.

I also heard his family tried to sue Fever for letting someone in a wrecked state just leave the premises

Now that the Premier League is pretty much a three-team race, I really hope Spurs stay hot. For City to drop all that cash and miss out on any hardware would be just too damn special.

so my boss has started this conversation about what is an appropriate age to let your child stay home unsupervised, or go to a friend’s house unsupervised. His son is a freshman in HS. My parents had no problem letting me do so around 13ish, and I pointed out that I and my close friends didn’t give our parents reasons not to trust us (we baked cookies. we watched movies. we gave each other manicures. God, we were boring!). Everyone else in the office seems shocked by this.

my boss is convinced that if he let’s his son be at home tomorrow without the sitter, he’s going to invite every kid from school over and have some ragging mid-day party and wild sex and drink all the alcohol, and somehow clean it all up before the sitter arrives with the younger sister at 3pm.

I’m late to the rink today, but I HAD to comment on this teenager thing. It’s amazing how some people who don’t even have kids (Birdie, WOI) have more common sense about children than some parents. It seems this might be your boss’ oldest child, ergo, hasn’t learned from their mistakes yet situation. This poor kid. A baby sitter at 14? My kids were baby sitting at 14. Responsibility is earned and learned. They should have started with smaller steps at a younger age…like 12…going to the mall with friends with very specific rules…short periods of time home alone or with a friend during the day…movie night at home with a couple friends while the parents went out for a bite. You can’t go from 0 to 60 overnight. Mistakes and bad choices are going to happen, but they can be minimized if you start early and gradually…the mistakes are smaller and hopefully the big ones can be avoided. I’ve had my share of “Oh, mom you were right, I wish I had listened to you” THAT will happen no matter what you do. I was going to say, as long as they don’t end up in jail, but that may happen, too. As long as they stay safe! I have two away at college and one left at home…I worry every day, but I have to let them go…sniff, sniff.

I imagine it has to be a bit terrifying every time you let your children take that next step: staying home alone, riding the metro alone, driving, college….absolutely terrifying, probably.

also, do you have neighbors that you trust? Will they be home during that time? Do you trust your kid(s) to call or go to the neighbor if something happens? That’s how it worked in our house. The neighbors next to us and the ones across the street knew us well and my parents always had one of them (discreetly) keeping an eye on the house while they were out, and it was drilled into our heads that if ANYTHING happened we were to go to the neighbor’s house.

get to know them, and get your kids to know them. The one time I came home from school to an unlocked house (my mom had just forgotten to lock it behind her when she took from little brothers to school before work, but I didn’t know that), I made a beeline to one of those trusted neighbors, who took charge, made sure the house was okay, and then let me stay with her and eat cookies until my mom came home.

Younger S started walking home from school alone in 3rd grade. It was three blocks; the crossing guard was halfway home, and I could see him coming from there. We started with letting the kids stay home while we were grocery shopping, then moved to going out to dinner sans kids, and then to weekends. It was a gradual process, and the guys never gave us any reason for concern. In middle school we were the house that had the sleepovers (6-10 middle school boys and the hilarity and chaos that ensues). Got to know the other kids and their parents.

We never had a problem in HS. Neither kid was interested in drinking, and by and large, their friends weren’t either.

We also let neighbors know if we were going to be gone, and they’d let us know if one of their kids was home alone. We also checked in regularly by phone, and the kids did call from time to time if there were any issues. There are those who would be horrified at leaving kids home alone, but they’ve got to learn independence at some point, and better that they learn with some sort of a safety net.

We also swapped keys with neighbors — if kids came home and forgot their key, there were two or three neighbors who had a spare key, and generally at least one would be around. I had plenty of knocks on my door from neighbor kids who had locked themselves out.

I was pretty much on my own all the time when school was out. But then again, in elementary school I usually hung out with the neighbor kids, who had a stay-at-mom.

Oh yeah, I read that artcle also. I remember when I was around 9 y/o “Cum on Feel the Noize” by Quiet Riot was like the coolest song.

by Rather Bengt on Jan 19, 2012 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

I remember the song, but they flamed out before I was into music much. I am kinda thankful I missed the hair metal era. Not many bright spots in that black hole of suckitude.

Funny thing is I hated hair metal too. But the video was played constantly on a local Toronto video show. Luckiy enough my first favourite band ever was Talking Heads. I bought their Stop Making Sense LP around the same time.

RIP Johnny Otis
RIP: Johnny Otis, often referred to as the Godfather of Rhythm and Blues, passed away in his LA home yesterday after struggling with ill health for years. He was 90.

Otis, a white man born to Greek immigrants, was raised in a black neighborhood in Berkeley where he developed a strong predilection for black culture. He changed his name from John Veliotes to the more "black sounding" Johnny Otis when he was a teenage.

"As a kid, I decided that if our society dictated that one had to be black or white, I would be black," Otis was quoted as saying. His olive complexion led many to believe Otis was actually black.

The singer, songwriter, bandleader, and radio host had many hits during the 40′s and 50′s. However, his biggest chart-topper by far was "Willie and the Hand Jive" (above).

Otis wrote songs for and influenced many of R&B and rock and roll’s greatest vocalists, including Etta James, Gladys Knight, and Elvis Presley.

Later in life, Otis dabbled in other art forms and even politics, but always returned to his first love — music. He opened an organic grocery store where he would perform for customers every Friday and Saturday night.

Otis leaves behind a wife, two sons, two daughters, and a number of grandchildren.

He deserves credit if for nothing else naming his son “Shuggie”. Shuggie went on to a performing career himself , doing the original version of “Strawberry Letter 23” which was later made into a hit by the Brothers Johnson in the late 70s.

Peugeot Announces Exit from Le Mans

by What Is Narf? on Jan 19, 2012 4:42 PM EST reply actions

yeah I’m kind of shocked, Peugeot had the 908 sorted out but ACO did re-write the rules to make diesels not run the show (the ACO really was wanting to see more hybrids out there) so it makes sense. The cost of running a team, especially a factory backed, means less and less factory prototypes and more privateers on Lola/Panoz/etc chassis with drop-in engines

Can’t say I’m exactly displeased — the old GT1 class was such a snorefest when the entire race hinged on whether one of the Corvettes would crash or whether one of the Astons would break down. The new GT classes are so, so much better and seem to be cheaper — lots more small timer ALMS teams showing up.

I need to get a bit more into the race this year. The past few I’ve only caught bits and pieces. Now that I’m almost finished reading Go Like Hell I’m getting much more interested in it. There have also been some interesting developments in F1 during the off-season. Mainly with driver changes.
