The Noon Number

WASHINGTON, DC - DECEMBER 01: Alex Ovechkin #8 of the Washington Capitals sits on the boards during a timeout in the third period against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Verizon Center on December 1, 2011 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Rob Carr/Getty Images)

25.1 - Per-game shots on goal average for the Capitals under Dale Hunter. Since the lockout, no team has averaged fewer over a full season (the 2007-08 Thrashers averaged 25.8 as the post-lockout low; three teams, including the Caps, averaged fewer in 2003-04).

If the average goaltending save percentage is .915, then the Caps will score barely two goals a game at that shot pace (2.13…LAK is currenlty 30th at 2.15/game).

If you've read this far...seek help.

That is alarming. And couldn’t be more opposite of the BB caps of ’09-10.

I suppose the drop in shots would be more palatable if the Caps had measurably decreased the number of shots by the opposition. I don’t have the numbers in front of me, but IIRC, that isn’t the case.

Mike Green would probably help that number, but he can’t really be relied upon to stay healthy. Baxter missing time is only making it worse.

The bottom line is there is a lot of wasted cap space on this team. Poti we have gone over, Joel Ward, imo could be replaced by a grinder for 1/3 the salary, Semin is giving very little for 6.7M and for all the ’Ovi’s back’ talk, he’s now 1-1-2 in the past 6 games and on a 30ish goal, 60ish point season pace.

It’s obviously on McPhee now, or on Ted to get a guy in here who can figure this out.

It isn’t even anger-inducing. It does not seem to be worth that kind of emotional investment. It might not even be disappointing any more. It is expected.

If you watch the games really close the Caps have at best 21/2 lines that come to play and the rest are either not ready for the NHL,Beagle,Eakin and Perreault, and then there’s players like Ward who looks confused and out of place,Knuble and Halpren are so so but there best years are behind them.Ovie needs to pass more and stop trying to beat the D all by himself, how many players do you see open and Ovie just ends up losing the puck because he tries to do it all by himself. Semin is playing decent hockey right now and I think he just needed a coach to put him in his place,if you get rid of Semin who on the team is going to be able to step it up and take his place. You’ve heard what Semin’s teammates say about him, that he is a raw talent and could be the best player in the NHL.The only prayer we have is the All Star break might give them time to fine tune Hunters game plan and for McPhee to get rid of some of this dead weight and get some players that are hungry. If we could get Green back at 80% health maybe that might be the emotional boost the Caps need.Anybody else have any thoughts.

Between this and Neil’s charts from this morning, it’s not such a happy time to be a Caps fan right now.
